This is an Encore Presentation of my December 2022 interview with Bruce Belland of The Four Preps, America's first boy band. Their 1958 million selling hit “26 Miles Across The Sea” made them into international pop stars. The song influenced Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys and inspired Jimmy Buffett. The Preps were featured on the Ed Sullivan Show and had a recurring role in “Ozzie And Harriet”. They even co-starred in the movie “Gidget” with Sandra Dee. In total they had 8 Gold Singles and 3 Gold Albums. Bruce talks about his fascinating life in the entertainment business including his date with Nancy Sinatra. My featured song is “Around The Horn” from the Made In New York album by my band, Project Grand Slam. Author and studio animal trainer, Sue Chipperton joined me in this episode to talk about her recently released book, A Famous Dog's Life: The Story of Gidget, America's Most Beloved Chihuahua. While Sue has trained many animals for roles in commercials, television and movies, her book mainly focuses on her life with Gidget the famous "Yo Quiero, Taco Bell" dog and the fascinating world of Hollywood animal training. Sue shared with me what it was like to train such a famous dog, how she selects animals that will be trained for roles in movies, commercials and television, and how Gidget surprised everyone by biting Antonio Banderas on the nose when he got to close. This is truly an inspiring story! More details on this episode MP3 Podcast - What Do You Know About the "Taco Bell" Dog with Tim Link
Tread Perilously's Movies On TV month continues with an episode of Gidget called "Gidget's Foreign Policy." When Gidget's father allows an associate's daughter to spend the week before classes begin at UCLA at their home, Gidget comes face-to-face with a more rigid way of life: the Swedish way! But her attempts to get the timid Inge to loosen up work too well and, soon, the exchange student is chasing the boys Gidget usually keeps on a leash. Will her boyfriend choose Inge over her? And what will happen when Inge's fiance returns from San Francisco to discover what's become of his intended? Erik and Justin immediately seize on the weirdness of Sweden as a truly foreign country. Erik accidentally stumbles on a possible Opus Dei conspiracy. Star Sally Field is discussed for her obvious presence, but lack of chops as Gidget. The character's name is also discussed. Justin tries to figure out the premise and its connection to the film. The innocence of the series throws the pair for a loop. Special guest star Walter Koenig and a member of the film's cast leads down a very specific alley. The importance of a good burger bun is emphasized. Gerd Shockley makes an unexpected appearance and Cliff Robertson is celebrated.
SEPT. 1, 1962, WAS an unusually sultry day for the north Oregon coast, and the little beachside resort town of Seaside was crammed with high-school and college kids. They had come from all over the state and beyond for a rowdy, high-spirited end-of-summer Labor Day beach-party weekend that had become almost like a tradition in the postwar years. Something was a little different this year, though. The crowd was larger than usual, for one thing. Actually, it was a lot larger. The first baby-boomers, born in 1946, were 16 years old in 1962 ... and there were a lot of them on the beach that day, and they were a bit wild. Something else that was different that year was the attitude of the Seaside cops. They were being noticeably more hard-nosed than they had been in years past. Seaside had elected a new mayor, Maurice Pysher, a 68-year-old former heating engineer who had retired to Seaside from Portland a couple years before. Pysher didn't like his new town's reputation as a place where kids could blow off steam, and he'd seen that they were getting noticeably rowdier year after year. He wanted visitors to Seaside to be quieter, more respectful, and less rambunctious. So he had fired Seaside's longtime police chief and replaced him with someone who would be more strict and firm about keeping things orderly. The crowds of college kids and high-school students who flocked to town for Labor Day had always been a little high-spirited, and the town's cops had learned to strike a balance with them. They'd be there if somebody really needed help, and they'd stop any actual vandalism or other criminal activity; but they wouldn't accost anyone on the street and hassle them for carrying an open beer, or ticket them for disorderly conduct for getting too loud around a beach bonfire. But, not any more. Today was the start of Labor Day Weekend, 1962. The crowds were enormous, the beer was flowing freely, and the cops had a new attitude. It wouldn't take long for that combination to explode into something close to a worst-case scenario for the town: the first Seaside beach-party riot. Les, Kurt, and Jason are so excited to dig into a movie for Peacock! But first, the guys breakdown the Abe Lincoln documentary Lover of men, and find out that Les is friends with the guy that portrayed Abe in the reenactments. Then, in Blac Chyna news, the story about Twin Hector getting beat up gets (as Jason predicted) more violent and weird as Tokyo Toni wants the credit for it! Then they guys dig into Peacock's A Nanny to Die for. This movie may have been released on Peacock, but it was made by the longtime Lifetime stalwarts at Hybrid, and it has many of the same Hallmarks (pun intended): multiple murders, a cold open, a psycho with a traumatic childhood, and just a hint of gaslighting! It is with great sadness that I post this episode today. James Darren was a multi-talented actor and singer. From his iconic roles as Moondoggie in the Gidget films of the 60's to his starring roles in “The Guns of Navarone" and “T.J. Hooker,” along with his recurring role as Vic Fontaine in “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” he wowed audiences around the world. Plus, with his Grammy nominated hit “Goodbye Cruel World,” he could do it all. And besides appearing on “Between the Lines” he was also a long-time friend. He passed this morning leaving millions of adoring fans with heartbreak. My wife and I are amongst them. In this episode we share so much of his kindness and talent that it should only bring back beautiful memories of this beautiful man.Support the show

It's Popzara's Movie Time! Podcast, where our in-house movie nerds Ethan Brehm and Nate Evans take you on an unscripted journey yakking and chatting about some of their favorite movie moments and cinematic scenes, from past and present, presented without snark and snobbery for your listening pleasure. On deck for this episode are two mid-century movies that would define not just the “surfer movie” genre, but would dramatically influence the American culture landscape. First up is 1959's Gidget, Paul Wendkos' classic starring Sandra Dee in her most iconic role as the lovable, irrepressible title character. Long credited as jump-starting both the summer beach movie genre and helping turn the sport of surfing into a national craze, beneath its bubbly exterior hides a deeper, more complex examination of a post-WW2 generational shift that would change America – and how young Americans saw themselves – forever. Next is 1966's The Endless Summer, Bruce Brown's groundbreaking documentary showcasing a preternatural love not just for the sport of surfing, but those who dedicate their lives searching for the elusive perfect wave. Brown's film, using only footage and his colorful commentary, manages to capture both the spirit of the 1960s while maintaining an optimistic outlook for humanity, despite the enormous cultural upheaval happening across the world.
This week we catch big waves and psycho killers as we review the film adaption of the hit play Gidget goes psychotic. " Psycho Beach Party" from the year 2000s
In the late 50s and early 60s a lot of you watched the very popular “Gidget” movies. Television, film actor, and TV director James Darren was the star of these films, along with co-star Sandra Dee. He played the part of Moondoggie. James was also in “The Guns of Navarone” and “Because They're Young.” And on TV, he was in “The Time Tunnel” and the police drama “T.J. Hooker.” On WOKY, in the 60s, we were playing his hits “Goodbye Cruel World” and “Her Royal Majesty.”
On this week's Keepin It Real, Cam is having a harder and harder time walking his dog due to his neighbor's dog that won't go away. ----- “Am I my brother's keeper?” Cain asked this of God after his brother Abel went missing and God asked Cain, “Hey. Where's Abel?” Cain claimed he didn't know. Cain had killed Abel, by the way, and was trying to hide it. How about this question – “Am I my brother's dog's keeper?” I remember growing up in a neighborhood where everyone let their dogs run. There were few fenced in yards. No such things as invisible dog fences and fancy dog collars. The dog I got for Christmas as a teenager, a black lab we named Holly, mostly stayed in the yard, on the front porch, or by the back door. She had a small piece of left over carpet that she could sit and sleep on when she was allowed inside. It stayed next to the back door and Holly was not allowed to go anywhere else in the house. Outside she roamed a bit when she got older. She was one of many. There was Gumpy and Gidget and Daisy and Elizabeth and more all on our street. Holly was known by the neighbors and, well, tolerated, just like their dogs were by us and tolerated. Holly never caused problems – at least that's the way I remember her. The rules have changed. Today we fence dogs in. Or we put them behind invisible dog fences with collars that give dogs a series of warning beeps when they approach their boundaries. We don't let them outside unsupervised. We only walk them on leashes, and we pick up their droppings with special poop bags and carry their poop in our pockets before we throw it away, which shocks me. We humans have created artificial intelligence, we regularly go to and from outer space, we have created the pyramids of Giza, a flawless sculpture of David, and radars that can see underground from outer space but we regularly carry dog poop in our pockets. We're not as advanced as we think. But I digress. So, back to the question, am I my brother's dog's keeper? My neighbor's dog wanders the neighborhood. The owner says the same thing – Oh. I'm sorry. She got out again. And again. And again. And again. The windowsills in the front of my house are destroyed. My dog goes nuts when she sees the other dog in our yard. And when the other dog comes up to our window our dog barks violently and claws at the window which has destroyed our sills. Their dog gets into our curbside recycling, spreading it all over the yard. Their dog follows us when we go on walks and we have to abandon our walks for fear of their dog getting into traffic. The dog, of course, is just being a dog. It's doing what dogs do. We've returned the dog to the owner many times but, I don't know, the owner doesn't seem to care about the hassles the dog causes. So, am I my brother's dog's keeper? And if yes, for how much longer? And can I put the dog's owners in a poop bag and throw them away? I'm Cam Marston just trying to Keep It Real.

This week Elsa Devienne drops in to talk about Gidget and the history and transformation of the California beach. We get into the fascination with the US and the environment, as well as the influence of Hawaii on California beach culture. We also jump into issues of body image, gender dynamics, and queer representation in beach movies and the global trasnformation of surf culture post Gidget. This is a fun talk.About our guest: Elsa Devienne joined Northumbria University in 2019, having previously taught at Princeton University, Université Paris Nanterre, and the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales. At age 14, Kathy Zuckerman discovered the surfer culture in Malibu, CA. Soon, this wave-catching teen had earned the nickname “Gidget.” The Hollywood versions of Gidget, played by such stars as Sandra Dee, Sally Field, and Karen Valentine, were loosely based on Zuckerman's life. But how did that happen? And what brought her to the White Stallion Ranch in Tucson, Arizona years later? The real Gidget chats with Russell about how it all went down.

Today I am speaking with the divine Dana Stephensen. Dana grew up in Brisbane learning tap, jazz and singing, and never dreamed of being a ballerina. But ballet had a way of finding her. And strangely enough, it was a rejection letter from the Australian Ballet School and the disappointment that followed that awakened her passion and changed the trajectory of her life. In this beautifully courageous and candid interview, Dana speaks about her career with the Australian Ballet, managing her thyroid condition and the affect that had on her body image, and being promoted to senior artist after becoming a mum. But more than that, Dana opens up about the birth of her twin girls, navigating the loneliness of motherhood in a pandemic, the pressures of parenting with a public figure, and wondrously re-emerging and returning to the stage.Dana continues to perform as a senior artist with the Australian Ballet, all the while juggling life with her son Jasper, her fiancé Lachlan Gillespie, and their twin girls Lulu and Lottie. To continue to follow all of Dana's adventures, you can find her on Instagram @dana_stephensenFor support for peri and postpartum depression in Australia, you can find support through the Gidget foundation or PANDA's support line, their details are in the show notes, or for further aboard, please contact your local services.Dana and I recorded remotely, with Dana dialling in from Sydney on the land of the Gadigal People of the Eora Nation, to which we pay our greatest respects. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Founding Member of The Four Preps, Bruce Belland About Harvey's guests: Today's guest, Bruce Belland, is a founding member of one of America's most popular and beloved vocal groups, commonly referred to as America's First Boy Band, The Four Preps. As young teenage students at Hollywood High in 1954, our guest, along with singing partners Glen Larson, Ed Cobb and Marv Ingram, entered a high school talent show, and they kept on performing at high schools until that fateful day in 1956, when they were signed to a recording contract at Capitol Records, making them the youngest vocal group in history to ever sign with a major record label. They recorded dozens of classic songs and produced 8 gold singles and 3 gold albums featuring their signature tunes, “Dreamy Eyes”, "26 Miles (Santa Catalina)," "Big Man," "Lazy Summer Night," “Down By the Station”, “More Money for You and Me”, and many more. In 1957, Cashbox Magazine named The Four Preps the Most Promising Newcomer of the Year. They made numerous appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show, American Bandstand and many other TV variety shows, in addition to singing backup for Ricky Nelson for 4 years on “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet”. And of course, they appeared with Sandra Dee in the 1959 movie, “Gidget”. And they sang the theme song from the 1957 Clark Gable movie, “Band of Angels”. The Four Preps headlined at nightclubs, concert halls and college campuses across the country, and toured with everyone from Tennessee Ernie Ford, George Burns and Carol Channing to Henry Mancini, Johnny Mathis, Buddy Rich and Glen Campbell. They received an official commendation from the Air Force for their extraordinary contribution to National Guard Recruitment. And in 2007, they were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. And now, our guest has released a fascinating and highly entertaining memoir entitled, “Icons, Idols and Idiots of Hollywood: My Adventures in America's First Boy Band.” This delightful book details our guest's remarkable show business journey, full of great anecdotes, many colourful adventures, and poignant memories of pop culture history. And let me tell you, the chapter about his hilarious experience filming a TV commercial with Annette Funicello at Disneyland is easily worth ten times the price of the book. Bruce Belland's new book is called Icons, Idols and Idiots of Hollywood: My Adventures in America's First Boy Band and boy, did he have adventures! Bruce founded The Four Preps while still in Hollywood High School. They became Ricky Nelson's backup band, co-starred in Gidget and The Adventures of Ozzy & Harriet and went on to score massive hits with 26 Miles Across The Sea, Big Man, and Down By The Station. In his book and on this episode, Bruce's storytelling is engaging and enlightening. He shares teen idol road stories, his Disneyland dream date with Annette Funicello (that devolved into a nauseous nightmare) his day on the set of a TV special with Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Rosemary Clooney and Louis Armstrong, exactly why a wholesome boy singer would include in his book a chapter titled, One Dead Junkie and a Masturbating Monkey, how the love and wisdom of his minister father and sharp witted mother fortified his remarkable journey, and the powerfully poignant night of President Kennedy's assassination when The Preps gave voice to heartbreak at Ohio State University. Through it all, Bruce remains a student. He confides what he learned from Gene Kelly, Ozzy Nelson and George Burns and just how he embraces the blessing of encountering someone who knows more than you and opening yourself up to new lessons.Plus, Fritz and Weezy are recommending Killers of the Flower Moon, in theaters and Desperately Seeking Soulmate: Escaping Twin Flames Universe, a doc series on Prime.Path Points of Interest:Bruce BellandIcons, Idols, and Idiots of Hollywood: My Adventures in America's First Boy Band by Bruce BellandThe Edsel ShowThe Four Preps on WikipediaKillers of the Flower Moon - In TheatersDesperately Seeking Soulmate: Escaping Twin Flames Universe

Ever since I first saw 1959's Gidget rerun on TV, I thought surfing and beach culture looked like the most fun you could have all summer. I might be an outsider still but my surf crush continues with every surfing movie or documentary that comes along, and the crazy-sexy fictional or real-life characters who make riding multi-story ocean waves look like a beach picnic. How could you not fall in love?https://www.confessionsofaclosetromantic.comMoviesThe one and only Gidget, the story of the "beach generation." Moondoggie's right: there is no next best thing to love! For many, Point Break (1991) with Keanu Reeves is the ultimate rush — and surfing movie. I prefer the technically impressive 2015 remake: it's an irresistible band of brothers story with romance and a bunch of gorgeous, knuckleheaded, uber-talented adrenaline junkies who have you rooting for them from word go. The trailer alone gives me a stomachache!"This is more than about surfing — it's about the choices you make in life." Chasing Mavericks is a feel-good story about found family, the roles we're sometimes given, and the passions that make all of us tick.Supposedly, it's a "teen drama" set in a surfing town in Australia, which is why I even started watching Surviving Summer, but I got sucked right into the clever script, acting, editing and gorgeous production values.Blue Crush is the ultimate summer surf-and-sand romantic drama.DocumentariesThe Endless Summer (1966) is the granddaddy of surfing documentaries, and it's totally groovy. The "girl gang" in the new 4-part documentary Surf Girls: Hawaii are barely into their 20s and yet so impressive, wildly talented and completely awesome. The sound design, pacing and incredible surfing skills and photography on display in the multi-part documentary 100 Foot Wave keep you on the edge of your seat. One version of the Ozaki Eight based on the Point Break remake. It's definitely one way to "honor the power of the ocean." But I'll need to celebrate the ocean from the shore, on a beach blanket.Find surfing oral histories, podcasts, virtual tours and more at the Surfing Heritage and Cultural Center online.Support the showIf you enjoyed this episode, please click share in your podcast app and tell your friends!
