Mitrice Richardson, a 24-year-old psychology graduate, disappeared on September 17, 2009, after being released from the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Station in Los Angeles, following her arrest for failing to pay an $89 restaurant bill and possessing a small amount of marijuana. Exhibiting erratic behavior suggestive of a mental health crisis, possibly undiagnosed bipolar disorder, Mitrice was released at 12:28 a.m. without her phone, wallet, or car, despite her mother's plea to hold her until morning. Last seen alive resting in a resident's backyard six hours later, her skeletal remains were found 11 months later in a remote canyon, with her clothing 700 feet away and no clear cause of death determined. The Los Angeles Sheriff's Department faced criticism for releasing her, mishandling her remains, and obstructing the coroner's investigation, prompting lawsuits and allegations of foul play, though her death was ruled undetermined, not a homicide. Her case led to policy changes for missing persons and mental health evaluations, but her family continues to seek justice, believing she was murdered. It's a case that has stumped generations of detectives and Internet sleuths. On Sept. 16, 2009, 24-year-old Richardson was arrested at an oceanside Malibu restaurant and taken to Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Station. With no money, no phone, and no ride, and in the midst of what was later described by law enforcement as a severe bipolar episode, Richardson was released by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Dept. just after midnight, and disappeared into the night. Her whereabouts confounded authorities for nearly a year until her skeletonized and partially mummified remains were found on Aug. 9, 2010, up rugged Dark Canyon, some six miles away from the station. There was no sign of trauma to Mitrice's remains and the coroner could not determine the cause of death. But Mitrice's death was undoubtedly suspicious. Her bra, belt, and jeans were found some distance from her body; the rest of her clothing was never found. And investigators never recovered a tiny bone called the hyoid, which often breaks when a person is strangled.A tenacious reporter and gifted storyteller, Goodyear spent the past five years on the case, leading her and her co-reporter, Hayley Fox, to the secluded tight-knit mountain community of Monte Nido where Mitrice was last seen. Driven by conversations with Richardson's grieving friends and family and undeterred by the scant clues that have been picked through by dozens of previous investigations, LOST HILLS: Dark Canyon probes where others have not, including Richardson's never-before-seen personal journals, new eyewitness interviews, and new potential forensic evidence. In 12 gripping episodes, Goodyear painstakingly builds a case that Mitrice's death involved foul play—and she identifies a potential suspect. In the summer of 2009, 24-year-old Mitrice Richardson was living in Los Angeles, California. She had recently graduated from Cal State Fullerton with a degree in psychology and was searching for the perfect doctorate program to continue her studies and pursue her dream of becoming a psychologist. On the night of September 16, she went to a restaurant in Malibu, where she began exhibiting some strange behavior. While some people thought maybe Mitrice was drunk or on some type of drug it became apparent that she was actually struggling with her mental health. Mitrice didn't pay her bill, but the workers weren't really concerned about that. They even discussed pulling their money together to help her. They were more concerned that she was obviously going through some type of crisis. So, they called the police, who then made the call that she did not need to be evaluated by a mental health professional. She was instead arrested and taken to jail. Her car was impounded, along with her cell phone and wallet. A few hours later, at 12:38 a.m., Mitrice was released without any of her belongings, no money, no phone, and no car. Almost a year later, in August 2010, Mitrice's remains were located. Since then, the cause of her death has become a major topic of debate for her loved ones, the city, and across true crime. Almost immediately, investigators said no foul play was involved in Mitrice's death. But her loved ones and even certain members of law enforcement have voiced their concerns that the evidence suggests otherwise. Mitrice's mentor, Dr. Ronda Hampton, joins us this week to discuss the case in a very candid interview. Anyone with information is asked to call the Los Angeles Police Department at (213) 486-6900. Mitrice Richardson was vivacious and full of life. She was inspiring to be a child psychologist working with children in the foster care system. On September 16th, 2009 Mitrice went to the restaurant Geoffrey's in Malibu, California but everyone she came across stated that she was acting strange. When she didn't pay her $89 bill the restaurant called police intending to get her help. The Lost Hills Sheriff's Station booked her around 10pm but released her just two hours later with no car, money, or phone. After being spotted in someone's backyard that would be the last time, she was ever seen alive.
Mitrice was a recent college graduate who lived with her great-grandmother in LA while working two jobs. She aspired to obtain a doctorate in child psychology and work with children in the foster system. Unfortunately, she did not get the opportunity to pursue these goals. Amid a seeming mental episode, Mitrice was arrested by the LA Sheriff's Department in September 2009. She was released with no cell phone, no wallet, and over 20 miles from her vehicle a little after midnight. While there was a sighting of Mitrice just a few hours after her release, it would be months before a more gruesome discovery would be made. On September 16th, 2009, Mitrice Richardson was in jail for acting bizarrely in a restaurant in Malibu, not being able to pay for her food, and having less than an ounce of marijuana on her. As you get to know Mitrice through the episode, all of this was so out of character for her. It's likely Mitrice was suffering with bipolar disorder but it crept up slowly through the years, barely detectable. That night, it's believed she had a mental breakdown after not sleeping for five nights. Her mother, Latice, called the station and said since her daughter would be at the jail until morning, she would come pick her up. Morning came sooner than expected. Mitrice was free to go from the station a little after 12AM on September 17th. Latice was not notified. Mitrice was in Malibu, a place she was not familiar with, 40 miles away from home. Her cellphone and purse were in her car, which they had towed off to a tow yard on the Pacific Coast Hwy.After Mitrice left the police station, she walked off into the darkness, never to be seen alive again. In regards to Mitrice's disappearance and strange death, you might start to question everything…• Mike Kessler's LA Magazine feature: https://www.lamag.com/longform/what-happened-to-mitrice-richardson• Ronda Hampton's Data Dump: https://thelocalmalibu.com/huge-data-dump-in-mitrice-richardson-case-in-solving-the-thirteen-year-cold-case/--Socials | Website | Contact | Patreon--Twitter: https://www.
The Mysterious Disappearance of Matthew Weaver. Matthew was last seen wearing a plain white or black tshirt Black dickies pants, red tennis shoes, and a red los angelous ballcap. Whats weird about this disappearance is the bizarre text messages and behavior leading up to Matthew vanishing. What makes it even more bone chilling is the location. You guessed it the Dark canyon around Malibu California…. Just like in Mitrice and Elaine's cases the Lost Hills Police Department did everything but help. Did Matthew just disappear to start a new life, or was something or someone after him like his mysterious and ominous text messages suggest…. Maybe he was a victim of a drug deal gone bad, or the new woman in his life knows more then she is letting on. Furthermore what the hell is going around Malibu, California… is it paranormal like a doorway to another dimension, a vortex, serial killer or is there a bad seed on the Lost hills Police Department. You know what they say eventually theres a trail of blood that leads back to the suspect even if it's a paranormal one. There is the possibility that there is something very, very wrong with the dark canyon.

In the early morning hours of September 17, 2009 24 year old Mitrice Richardson disappeared after being released from the Malibu/Lost Hills Los Angeles County Sheriff's station where she had been for several hours the evening before. She had been unable to pay her $89 dinner bill at Geoffrey's restaurant in Malibu. 11 months later Mitrice's remains would be found in Dark Canyon, but her family and friends would still be left with more questions than answers. How did Mitrice die? What was happening in the lead up to her disappearance? And why was she released from the Sheriff's station at 12 in the morning with no car, no phone, no money and no way to get home? On August 16 2009, Mitrice Richardson went missing after she was arrested by the LA County Sheriff's Department. Mitrice was a recent college graduate with no previous arrests or history of mental illness. But at the time of her arrest Mitrice was in the midst of a mental health crisis. She was acting strangely at an upscale restaurant in Malibu and tried to walk out without paying the bill. Mitrice's mom begged deputies not to release her daughter until she could be there to pick her up. But that is exactly what happened. Mitrice was released at midnight, alone, with no car, no phone, no wallet, and no way to find her way around in this unfamiliar area. And then, almost a year later, Mitrice was found dead.
Malibu, California. September 16, 2009. Mitrice Richardson had not been herself for a while. One day in mid-September, 24-year-old Mitrice was arrested for being unable to pay her bill at an exclusive Malibu restaurant. She was taken to the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Station. Her mother, Latice, was assured by a sheriff's deputy that she would be kept in custody over night. But this was not to be; Mitrice ended up being released in the middle of the night with no purse, phone, or any personal belongings. No one truly knows what happened to Mitrice that night.Eleven months later, her partially-mummified remains were discovered at the bottom of a canyon. Mitrice's devastated family and friends were desperate for answers. The LA County Sheriff's Department, on the other hand, had no interest in finding out what happened. Time and time again, they failed Mitrice's family. To this day, her cause of death remains unknown.Instagram: @talkmurderwithmeFacebook: @talkmurrderwithmeSources:Latice's book on Mitrice (Amazon link)LA Magazine article by Mike Kessler: What Happened To Mitrice Richardson?Malibu-area search fails to find missing woman, 24Long search for Mitrice Richardson comes to tragic endSix Years Later Mitrice Richardson's Death Still An Unsolved MysteryMissing woman's mother sues Los Angeles County and Sheriff's DepartmentFriends and relatives remember Mitrice RichardsonLie and Deny: Secrecy and Suspicion Surround the Los Angeles County Sheriff's DepartmentHopes for a new investigation into Mitrice Richardson case end in disappointmentAgain, no sign of Mitrice RichardsonCoroner's official criticizes Sheriff's Department for moving Mitrice Richardson's remainsAttorney general's probe finds no evidence of wrongdoing by deputies in death of Mitrice Richardson The California Attorney General's Office Finally Agrees to Look Into the Mitrice Richardson CaseCoroner's official criticizes Sheriff's Department for moving Mitrice Richardson's remainsMore bones found in ravine where Mitrice Richardson was discoveredTentative Settlement Approved in Mitrice Richardson CaseLos Angeles County authorities exhume woman's remainsMusic from Purple Planet MusicSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/talk-murder-with-me/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
Hi Friends! I wanted to talk about Mitrice Richardson, I feel like her story is pretty important. Her case got completely dismissed and not taken seriously, WHY?! WHY would they let her leave at 12:30 am without any car, phone, wallet, nothing?!?! Why was she arrested in the first place? Why why why why why. So many why's and not enough answers here. There is also a LOT more to this story but I just couldn't fit it in to one video, this one turned out way longer than expected. I hope for nothing but love, peace, closure and forgiveness for everyone involved. Mitrice was so young, so beautiful and had so much ahead of her. I pray for healing and love for the family. I also hope one day they can get some kind of closure. I know that doesnt mean much but , every family deserves closure. Have a wonderful day today and I will be seeing you guys very soon. What were the causes of the events that led to the death of Mitrice Richardson in the mountains above Calabasas and Monte Nido? On September 16th, 2009, Mitrice Richardson was in the middle of what seemed to be a psychotic break or major bipolar episode, and was arrested at Geoffrey's, a famous restaurant in Malibu, for not paying her bill. After being booked and released in Calabasas at the Lost Hills Sheriff Station shortly after midnight, Mitrice disappeared. She was later spotted wandering around nearby Monte Nido, several miles away, but thereafter disappeared into the hills, never to be seen alive again. Despite a massive search by authorities and volunteers, it wasn't until almost a year later that the authorities stumbled on her mummified body while searching for another case. Please Subscribe to our YouTube channel to make sure you don't miss new episodes of the Solvable Mysteries Podcast, we upload on a weekly basis.
On September 16, 2009, Mitrice Richardson was arrested outside a restaurant in Malibu for refusing to pay her bill. She was released from jail later that same night, but never made it back home. For 11 months, there was no sign of Mitrice and the sheriff’s department wasn’t cooperating with her family. Mitrice’s remains would be found in a ravine, decapitated and partially mummified. Her death was ruled an accident, but family members don’t believe that to be the case. What happened to Mitrice after she left the sheriff’s department, and is there more to this story than police are telling us?

Mitrice Richardson was a beautiful 24 year old woman who had just graduated from Cal State, Fullerton with a Bachelor's degree in psychology and a 4.0 gpa, with plans to become a child psychologist. She was also beginning to exhibit odd behavior and wasn't herself. On the evening of September 16, 2009, Mitrice was driving in Malibu, California, which was 40 miles from her home in Los Angeles, when she made a spur of the moment decision to stop at a restaurant for dinner, a decision which would have a lasting impact on Mitrice and her loved ones. After acting odd all throughout dinner and then attempting to leave the restaurant without paying, the police are called and Mitrice is arrested and taken into custody. When her mother calls the following morning with plans to come pick up Mitrice, she's distressed to learn that Mitrice had been released several hours prior in the dead of night. Her car had been impounded, and she had no phone, no money, no way of getting home, and was in an area she was completely unfamiliar with. Aside from a bizarre sighting later that morning, no trace of Mitrice Richardson was found for nearly a year, until on August 9, 2010, her remains were found in a canyon. Police concluded she had been in a manic state when she entered the canyon and died from exposure, but the family continues to fight for answers. How could someone in a state such as Mitrice was that night have just been allowed to leave in an area she was unfamiliar with, with no reliable way of finding her way home? Mitrice Richardson was an intelligent, well spoken, beautiful young woman. She was well educated and was looking forward to what would have been a very fulfilling life ahead of her. Unfortunately Mitrice would never get to experience all that life would have to offer her, for after a series of out of character behavior, and misunderstandings, Mitrice goes missing only to later be found dead. Mitrice was a young, educated, bubbly young woman from Los Angeles who excelled at everything she did. She was the first member of her family to go to and finish college. However, after graduation, signs of a mental illness began to show. She slowly became worse but refused to seek professional help. Everything came to a head the night she was arrested for being unable to pay her bill at an upscale Malibu restaurant. Though she exhibited strange mannerisms and seemed to be generally confused, and though her mother warned the sheriff's office she had been behaving oddly, deputies released this young woman to the streets 40 miles from her home at midnight with no money, no car, and no cell phone. Her mother was not alerted until 5:30 am police refused to accept a missing persons report until that afternoon. Sadly, Mitrice was never seen alive again. What caused the sheriff's office to release Mitrice at such an odd hour and with nothing more than her driver's license? Why did the sheriff's office hide evidence, alert reports and video records, and generally stonewall Mitrice's family from learning anything about her arrest. Why did law enforcement move her body over the objection of the coroner when she was finally found? And what cause Mitrice to meet her untimely death?Listen to this episode as we try to puzzle these questions out.SHOW NOTES:https://www.lamag.com/longform/what-happened-to-mitrice-richardson/https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2019-09-17/mitrice-richardson-reward-malibuhttps://laist.com/2019/09/17/mitrice-richardson-disappearance-10-year-anniversary.phphttps://medium.com/true-crime-by-cat-leigh/woman-found-dead-after-being-released-from-jail-55e6b0fb34c1https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Mitrice_Richardson

Even picturesque and lavish towns like Malibu have their share of hidden tragedies. What happened to Mitrice Richardson is one such mystery. The 24-year-old Californian beauty queen and recent college graduate went missing soon after dining at a popular celebrity-soaked Malibu restaurant. Her questionable mental state and subsequent arrest, in one of America's wealthiest communities, kicked off a set of unimaginable tragedies.
On the evening of September 16, 2009, 24-year-old Mitrice Richardson drove to the beach in Malibu, CA alone to enjoy watching the sunset, after which she stopped at a local restaurant to have a nice dinner. But while there, Mitrice's behavior went from curious to inexplicable, and she soon found herself taken to jail for failure to pay the check. Even though it was apparent to the staff she was suffering from some type of mental health issue, deputies at the scene processed her as being of sound mind. And this would have tragic consequences. Hours later, Mitrice was released from jail, and walked off into the darkness of night through some difficult and dangerous terrain. That was the last anybody saw of her ... until August of 2010, nearly a year later, when park rangers discovered her remains at the base of a steep canyon. But despite locating Mitrice, the body didn't afford the definitive answers everyone was hoping to get regarding her fate. In the aftermath, one looming question remains... Was it a tragic accident, or did Mitrice Richardson fall victim to a vicious predator lurking in the shadows? Join host Ryan Kraus for a journey into the mind of madness in an effort to unearth the secrets to the mystery surrounding her death.

Now, as we approach the 10 year anniversary of her disappearance, there is still no official cause of death and her family believes she was murdered.... the big question: how did Mitrice end up in a remote area and how did she die? This episode sheds new light on the case with new information and new interviews. In 2009 Mitrice Richardson, a young and beautiful twentysomething taking a year off between her graduate and postgraduate studies, showed up one night far from home at a ritzy Malibu, California restaurant - behaving weirdly. When she told the wait staff she couldn't pay the bill, the LA County Sheriff's Department was called and Richardson was hauled away to jail What happened next is the stuff of countless mothers' nightmares. Released from custody just after midnight, with no car, no money and no direction as to where to go next, Mitrice disappeared into the night - and into foreverville. Her remains were found months later, but to date clues as to how she died, or whether she was murdered, continue to run dry. Listen as Melissa is joined by clinical Psychologist Ronda Hampton, Ph.D., a mentor and friend to Mitrice, who has led a dedicated army of the young woman's friends and family in an unrelenting search for clues amid a story of - at best - some of the worst bungling ever committed by law enforcement. Tell us: Do you think you might have a tip that will turn this case around?
Twenty-four year old Mitrice Richardson wasn't making sense. She was sending cryptic text messages and indecipherable social media posts. Her mother was concerned, and on September 16th, 2009, she received a call explaining that Mitrice had been arrested in Malibu. After speaking with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Mitrice's mother was told her daughter wouldn't be released until the morning. With plans of picking her up the next day, her mother went to sleep. When she awoke, she was startled to discover Mitrice had been released and now, no one knew where she was.Over the course of the next year the anger between the family and Sheriff's department continued to grow as lies were uncovered and Mitrice's family felt the Sheriff's department was conducting a coverup. On August 9th, 2010, eleven months after she disappeared, Mitrice's body was recovered down a remote Canyon some six miles from the Sheriff's station. The discovery sadly confirmed that Mitrice had died, but the question of how would become the center of a firestorm of controversy.Join host Steven Pacheco as he examines the details of this deeply tragic and confusing case. For more information please visit: https://www.trace-evidence.comhttps://www.patreon.com/traceevidence Social Media:https://twitter.com/TraceEvPodhttps://www.instagram.com/traceevidencepod/https://www.facebook.com/groups/traceevidencepodMusic Courtesy of: "Lost Time" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/Sources: http://www.malibutimes.com/news/article_23018506-3381-5c16-a12b-c716085a9265.html | http://www.lamag.com/citythinkblog/what-happened-to-mitrice-richardson/ | https://www.dailynews.com/2017/02/01/mitrice-richardsons-family-speaks-out-as-state-says-deputies-shouldnt-be-prosecuted-in-her-death/ | https://www.dailynews.com/2015/11/28/5-years-after-mitrice-richardsons-remains-were-found-in-malibu-her-death-still-raises-questions/ | https://foxync.com/1778841/mitrice-richardsons-mom-wants-remains-examined/ | https://www.lipstickalley.com/threads/mitrice-richardson-discussion.204531/ | http://www.blackgirltragic.com/home/2016/5/19/the-mysterious-disappearance-death-of-mitrice-richardson | https://losangeles.cbslocal.com/tag/mitrice-richardson/
Following her release from the Lost Hills Sheriff's Station in Malibu, California at nearly one am, Mitrice Richardson went missing for months. This was a circumstance the Sheriff's Department found of little concern, and not worth much effort. Ten months later, when park rangers discovered her partially mummified remains on the hillside of Dark Canyon, the Sheriff's Department went against coroner's directives, and California Penal Code, and airlifted the remains to their station without doing any due diligence to document or preserve the scene and remains. Today, we discuss these events, the events that followed, and talk to a member of the Search and Rescue team for Mitrice, who had firsthand experience with the LASD. You're listening to Creep It Real, and today we bring you part two of our coverage on the murder of Mitrice Richardson. Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/creepitrealpod)
Ronda L. Hampton, Ph.D.:Mitrice Richardson Documentary "Lost Compassion"In the early morning of Sept. 17, Mitrice was reportedly seen on the front lawn of a nearby residence. That would be the last time she was seen alive.Eleven months later, Richardson's remains were found in Malibu Canyon, yards from her clothing. An autopsy and investigation has not proven how she died or whether there was any foul play involved, though her family insists she would not have willingly gone into the canyon alone.More questions and allegations still swirl around the investigation, including when and how the remains were moved and whether or not there is a videotape of Richardson's time in jail.In addition, filmmakers Croft and Hampton contend that sheriff's deputies today are not participating and taking possible leads seriously. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/1198501/advertisement
