He saw coke—at a 7th-grader's birthday party. The kids were running wild and the parents were running wilder. His mind was blown, never to recover. From beautiful Malibu, California, it's Paradise Cove! Well, the film is Paradise Cove and the director Martin Guigui talks about the heavenly shooting location, the actors and finding the gray area between thriller and horror.Watch Paradise Cove now, starring Mena Suvari, Todd Grinnell and Kristin Bauer. Written by Sherry Klein and directed by Martin Guigui.
It's a full house this week on #BTLRadioShow thanks to our special guests, filmmakers STEPHEN JANIS, DEANNE FOLEY, and LATONIA HARTERY. Plus, some quick review bytes on two new films streaming everywhere right now – ME YOU MADNESS and PARADISE COVE. One of my fave films of the year already is ME YOU MADNESS, written and directed by LOUISE LINTON and starring Linton and Ed Westwick. Irreverant, politically incorrect, high octane, glamorous, breaking the fourth, rapier wit-filled darkly comedic action movie love story, ME YOU MADNESS is delicious dark decadent fun from start to finish. Linton shows good command as not only a wordsmith, but as a storyteller (much of which I believe we can credit to her trial advocacy skills as a lawyer) is well constructed and structured. Visually, Linton knocks it out of the park with polish and color thanks to cinematographers Reinhart Reschke and Boa Simon, whose lighting and lensing only serve to elevate the already sumptuous production design of Allura Johnson and Travis Zariwny, while editor Samuel Means maintains high octane energy, most notably in some over-the-top musical montages set to touchstone needle drops of the past few decades. (I want the soundtrack.) And then there's PARADISE COVE. Written by Sherry Klein and directed by Martin Guigi, PARADISE COVE stars veteran actors Todd Grinnell, Mena Suvari, and Kristin Bauer van Straten in this psychological thriller genre blend based on a true story. Van Straten stars as Bree, a once-wealthy Malibu matriarch and actress who has lost her home but refuses to leave the Paradise Cove colony, now living on the beach underneath her once home. Grinnell and Suvari are Knox and Tracey, a young married couple looking to get rich quick by flipping the Malibu beach home of Knox's recently deceased mother. Of course, that home was once Bree's and under which Knox and Tracey find her. Performances are solid with van Straten soaring as Bree. And while the script itself is unremarkable and easily fills the bill as a Lifetime TV movie versus a "theatrical" release film, elevating the film as a whole is Guigi's direction and his collaboration with DP Massimo Zeri, production designer Alessandro Marvelli (who uses color and texture to define and distinguish the character traits of our principals) and editor Eric Potter, the latter who delivers some truly shocking moments thanks to abrupt emotional cuts. Co-directors DEANNE FOLEY and LATONIA HARTERY join us live in the first half of the show talking about their charming and sweet anthology narrative about love and romance, HOPELESS ROMANTIC. Six women, six stories about love, all told within the setting of a wedding complete with the good, the bad, and the ugly cry. You laugh, you cry, you nod your head in sympathy, and by film's end you may even find yourself more of a "hopeful" romantic than not. Deanne directs one of the "segments" as well as the umbilical throughline while Latonia is not only one of the directors but a producer of the film which meant she was on hand for virtually all of the filming. Listen as Deanne and Latonia talk about the genesis of this anthology, collaboration amongst all six female directors, crafting characters and casting, diversity of characters, finding cohesive yet individually distinctive tone, using one cinematographer and one editor for the entire film and each segment, scoring, and let's not forget, the wealth of talent in the Nova Scotia area who we see on screen and behind the lens. Joining us at the midpoint of the show for a fascinating conversation about his documentary, THE FRIENDLIEST TOWN, is STEPHEN JANIS. An award-winning investigative journalist, author, musician, and now writer/co-director/editor of the documentary, Steph. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com
The thriller subgenre comes in many different forms. Back in the 1970's, the political thriller was big, in the 1980's it was the courtroom thriller, and in the 1990's it was the erotic-thriller. And yet, no matter how they come, they draw a very diverse audience since they seem to include everything interesting in a fictional story. The new thriller, PARADISE COVE (2021), was just released on February 12th, 2021, and though seeming to be another solid entry into the genre, it also has a bit of interesting subtext as well. Young couple Knox (Todd Grinnell) and Tracy (Mena Survari) inherit the home of Knox's late mother. The home has damage from a fire, but its value seems unlimited since it is beachfront property in Malibu, California. As they begin to clean up the property, they discover, Bree (Kristen Bauer van Straten) , a homeless woman, living on the residence. Unfortunately for the couple, they discover a scandalous back-story about the property that could jeopardize all their lives. The movie is directed by Martin Guigui and written by Sherry Klein. And the cast includes long time genre favorite Krista Allen. Rather than being a straight thriller, the movie also has a subtext about societal constructs such as property rights, subcastes, trophy spouses, and gentrification. Your co-hosts take a look at this interesting film and give their thoughts.

Episode 7: As you may have noticed, the show intro makes a few content promises. Well, my husband Thomas recently pointed out that I have gone off script and haven't delivered on those promises. In an attempt to impose order and make sense of this chaotic world in which we're living, I have gone back to the original plans. Don't worry, I'll definitely go off script again, it's unavoidable. In this episode, I will first explore the living in Colorado promise from the perspective of a values-driven business owner (myself) with Jordan Pryczynski, director of membership at a wonderful organization where I am proud to be a member, Good Business Colorado. Bonus, Jordan is a Colorado native and he has many Casa Bonita memories to dive into. Speaking of diving… did you hear that Casa Bonita is being sued by a professional diver for age discrimination? (See what I did there? Pun.) Casa Bonita cliff diving seems to be pretty heavily inspired by La Quebrada Cliff Divers in Acapulco, Mexico. Fun fact- cliff diving, especially cliff diving in Acapulco is totally, like, a thing in Mexican popular culture. The 1963 Elvis Presley film, Fun in Acapulco, is credited with bringing Mexican cliff diving to the world's attention. I don't know if that's actually true, it might have been on the scene before Elvis came along, he might be totally Columbusing the whole thing, I don't know. But, just in case, I watched the movie to prepare for this episode and I can't wait to tell you all about it. Anyway, ironically, the guy suing Casa Bonita for age discrimination is a champion diver and placed first in the 1970s in the Acapulco World Cliff Diving Championships. (Geez, Casa Bonita. Awkward.) So, Diving might actually come to have a significant presence here in Colorado. According to September 2019 headlines, USA Diving, the national governing body for the sport of diving, announced last year that they would be relocating their headquarters to Colorado Springs to be closer to the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee. There hasn't been a lot of post-move news about how USA Diving is liking their new Colorado digs, and it's not clear if they ever made the move! I can't find any news on it. I creeped on their Linked in profile and they only have one employee listed as living in CO Springs and their official location is “United States of America.” So, that clears things up. If you know what the deal is with USA Diving's planned move to Colorado Springs, leave a voicemail message on our shiny new website, www.casabonitapod.com! Later, we'll check out the available real estate close to the top-ranked cliff diving location in Colorado and we'll explore the cost, feasibility, and affect on your property value if you install a pool with a high dive in your backyard. Oh, if you want to take a look at the

What about the guy who’s been on a show for years and you know his face but what’shisnameagain? Or that actress who is now a freakin’ showrunner???? How’d THEY do it, right? How did they transition from relative obscurity, bartending and bottle service, to buying that house in Brentwood? We’re producing “Kahnversations,” a podcast that provides access to THOSE people -- your immediate predecessors -- so that you can learn from them while their battle scars are still fresh. In “Kahnversations,” our own Ryan Bailey interviews some of Lesly Kahn & Company’s working actors, directors, and writers in order to learn how they got started in Hollywood, the challenges and hurdles they faced, and how they overcame the odds.
