In June 2018, Tristan Beaudette and his brother-in-law Scott McCurdy had left their wives in Orange County to embark on a final camping trip together before Tristan and his wife Erica relocated to the Bay Area. Their home for the night …Malibu Creek State Park, near beautiful Malibu Beach. After a night by the campfire, Beaudette and McCurdy went to their respective tents and settled in for bed. Already asleep inside the separate tents were their most treasured possessions: Scott's two boys, ages 3 and 5 and Tristan's daughters, 2 and 4. Sometime after 1 in the morning on June 22, 2018, Scott was awakened by what he thought were fireworks. Then he heard Tristan's daughters crying. Scott told his boys to stay put while he went to Tristan's tent to investigate. There, he saw Tristan lying face down in the center of the tent and his daughters huddled together, crying. Tristan's face was covered in blood.  Given Malibu's reputation as a safe beach town, nobody believed Tristan's murder was a random act of violence. The community was shocked after an arrest was made and law enforcement alleged there was a monster in the Malibu Hills killing indiscriminately.  Follow Jami on Instagram & TikTok @JamiOnAir and join the Serial Streamers true crime TV club! The Agathas #1The Agathas May 3, 2022 by Delacorte PressKathleen Glasgow, Liz LawsonLast summer, Alice Ogilve's basketball-star boyfriend Steve dumped her. Then she disappeared for five days. Where she went and what happened to her is the biggest mystery in Castle Cove, because she's not talking. Or it was, at least. But now, another one of Steve's girlfriends has vanished: Brooke Donovan, Alice's ex–best friend. And it doesn't look like Brooke will be coming back. . .Enter Iris Adams, Alice's tutor. Iris has her own reasons for wanting to disappear, though unlike Alice, she doesn't have the money or the means. That could be changed by the hefty reward Brooke's grandmother is offering to anyone who can share information about her granddaughter's whereabouts. The police are convinced Steve is the culprit, but Alice isn't so sure, and with Iris on her side, she just might be able to prove her theory. In order to get the reward and prove Steve's innocence, they need to figure out who killed Brooke Donovan. And luckily Alice has exactly what they need—the complete works of Agatha Christie. If there's anyone that can teach the girls how to solve a mystery it's the master herself. But the town of Castle Cove holds many secrets, and Alice and Iris have no idea how much danger they're about to walk into. The Woman in the LibraryJune 7, 2022 by SourcebooksSulari GentillThe ornate reading room at the Boston Public Library is quiet, until the tranquility is shattered by a woman's terrified scream. For Detective Eve Ronin, it's a backdrop for murder in a riveting thriller by #1 New York Times bestselling author Lee Goldberg. For decades Malibu Creek State Park was the spectacular natural setting where Hollywood fantasies were made. But when a female camper is gunned down, it becomes a real-life killing ground. Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department homicide detectives Eve Ronin and Duncan Pavone are assigned the case…which Duncan fears is the latest in a series of sniper attacks that began long before Eve came to Lost Hills.Seven victims over fourteen months…and top officials still refuse to see a connection. Eve and Duncan are stonewalled, threatened, and ordered to keep quiet. But Eve won't back down. She's no stranger to intimidation or corruption—she's had a target on her back from day one at Lost Hills station.Despite finding no evidentiary links between the shootings, Eve and Duncan follow their instincts into the shadows of Malibu Creek, where it's not enough to expose the secrets and break the conspiracy of silence. They also have to make it out alive.

Welcome to Episode 44 of the Eat for Endurance Podcast, highlighting my 40th birthday trail running adventure down in Southern California with my husband, Eric. With all the major marathons happening so close together, I figured it was a perfect time to post our recent experience running 26.2 (well, technically 27+ miles, but hey, that's a trail marathon for you!).I don't know how you guys like to travel, but for me the perfect trip includes is a bit of relaxation, plenty of active adventures, and of course, good food. So, when Eric asked me how I wanted to celebrate turning 40 years old (!!!!!) in September, I immediately started to look for trail races, hikes, and whatever else sounded like an epic way to get older. Initially, I was determined to go to the Grand Canyon (never been!) and check the Rim to Rim off my bucket list, but unfortunately we weren't able to make it happen with childcare. I went back to the drawing board and saw that Sean O'Brien, a classic race down in Malibu Creek State Park, was the day after my birthday, so we signed up for the marathon! They also had a 50k that day (and 50 and 100 milers in October ), but with our less-than-ideal training, and such a difficult course with tons of elevation gain, we knew the marathon would be hard enough. This was my first marathon since running Big Sur back in April 2016, before having kids! I was super excited to get back to the long stuff, and to explore some new trails in my home state. Much like with our Big Basin trail running podcast episode, Eric and I recorded our thoughts before the race while we chilled out in Cambria, a small beach town a couple hours south of Santa Cruz. Then we gave a detailed recap hours after finishing the race, from our Air BnB in Topanga, lying in bed!  It was a very challenging but super fun day out, and I highly recommend the race. Very well organized and a beautiful course. I'm hoping it's my first of many longer trail races in the months and years to come! Thanks for listening, and if you're interested, Eric made an awesome action camera video documenting the entire thing! I'll post it on Instagram (@eatforendurance) soon. Hope everyone is enjoying the Fall racing season, and best of luck to all my friends and clients running Chicago and Boston this weekend!Other Announcements:Please show your support by leaving a rating and/or review on iTunes Music Credit: Joseph McDadeHave nutrition questions, a guest or topic request, or any other feedback? Lost Hills: "On June 22, 2018, Tristan Beaudette is brutally murdered in front of his two young daughters while camping in idyllic Malibu Creek State Park. The killing stuns the tight-knit, privileged community of Malibu. More stunning? The fact that the cops anticipated the attack, but didn't move to stop it. And the culprit they identify insists he's being framed." Aria Code: "They say you can't go home again, and Giuseppe Verdi's Aida knows it all too well. Captured from her homeland of Ethiopia and enslaved in Egypt, she falls in love with an Egyptian warrior. Aida is torn between her love for this man and her love for her home and, because it's opera, she ultimately chooses the tenor. In 'O Patria Mia,' Aida stands on the banks of the Nile and says goodbye to Ethiopia. In this episode, host Rhiannon Giddens and her guests explore what home means, and what it means to leave it behind." Play Me: "By Jordi Mand. The two share a tense exchange about school policy and Teresa's teaching style until Marion reveals the real reason for her unannounced visit." And Jimmy Rogers, victim of Near MIss #1, describes being awakened just before dawn by an explosion . . . aimed at his head. Welcome to Episode 104 of the F-Stop Collaborate and Listen podcast with Charles Zimmerman!Charles A. Zimmerman (CAZ) is a landscape photographer living in Denver, Colorado - he has been a landscape photographer for many years - he owned his own gallery for 5 years and is an avid visitor of the American Southwest. He is a former lawyer and often finds himself playing devil's advocate on issues relating to landscape photography - something we took full advantage of on the podcast! In this episode of the podcast, we sit down with Charles to talk about some of the most important topics of our time as photographers, and Charles offers some different perspectives than what you are used to hearing here on the podcast, so I highly recommend you listen! We talked about: Location overcrowding (and how it may be a positive thing) How to find "secret" places Photographing icons and comp stomping Workshops - how to find a good one and what to expect Advice for photographers To celebrate the launch of episode 100, we have collaborated with some of our guests to offer discounts of their tutorials and products to new and existing Patrons of the podcast over on Patreon. From March 20 through April 30, 2019, new and existing patrons will receive the following discounts: 1. 20% off Alex Noriega processing tutorial videos (only good for videos released prior to March, 2019) 2. 20% off Michael Shainblum processing tutorial videos 3. 20% off Eric Bennett instructional videos 4. 20% off Joshua Cripps Photography tutorials 5. 20% off Sarah Marino & Ron Coscorossa Nature Photo Guides e-books 6. 20% off Colleen Miniuk-Sperry’s books and eBooks To get these discounts, simply sign up as a Patron of the podcast at the $5/mo or higher level before April 30, 2019. Your discount codes will revealed after you sign up.  Please consider supporting the podcast on Patreon! There's a ton of bonus content over there for subscribers! Your support is critical - it helps with production costs and to improve the podcast over time. Thanks! Even $1 / mo helps a lot! We are growing closer to our goal of getting to $1,000/mo in support, at which point I will create an award to be given to a photographer that is a champion of conservation. Help us get there! This week on Patreon, Charles and I talk about his experience setting up a small business, mistakes he made in running his own gallery (and how you can learn from them), and a lot more. Last week I announced that we are doing a weekly photo theme for patrons of the podcast. The idea is simple - patrons submit their photographs based on the theme of the week and I pick my favorite submission and talk about it on the podcast and on Patreon. We'll try this out and see if people like it! Last week's theme was "Trees in Spring" - there were several really great submissions from Mark Clafshenkel, James Bokovoy, William Nurse, Ryan Shanahan, Joseph Doherty, Jackson Frishman, and Bruce Couch. This week, my favorite submission was from Joseph Doherty. Here is what he said: "I shot it this morning at Malibu Creek State Park in California. My previous, nearly identical, image of this was shot in 2016. This tree was in the path of the Woolsey Fire last year, and three weeks ago, when I last visited, I was unsure whether it survived. But today I saw new growth all over the tree, and so I thought that was worth revisiting the photo I shot a few years ago." Thanks Joe! I really loved that this was taken during the week of the theme and there's just something about the photo that evokes a lot of power that I really appreciate. Let's keep the submissions coming! This week's theme is "Mystery." So get out there and create some art and share it with the group on Patreon! Here are the photographers that Charles recommended for the podcast: 1. Robert Hitchman. 2. Laurent Martres. 3. Tony Sweet. 4. Adam Schallau. I love hearing from the podcast listeners! Reach out to me via Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter if you'd like to be on the podcast or if you have an idea of a topic we can talk about. You can also join the conversation on our Facebook Group! We've also started an Instagram page and a Facebook page for the podcast, where we'll be sharing updates as we go! As Zaius once said, don’t look for it, you may not like what you find. To balance out Burton’s Apes film with the classic Apes, we recorded this episode from the actual Planet of the Apes film and TV shooting locations at Malibu Creek State Park. After our recording, we ventured out and visited the spots where many iconic scenes took place. Fortunately the fires that took place just weeks before didn’t destroy these landmarks.   Look for the location hunt video on the Skywalking Through Neverland Youtube channel. Now Go Ape!

The Case of Michella Welch On March 26, 1986, 12-year old Michella Welch took her siblings to Puget Park in Tacoma, Washington at around 10 AM. About an hour later, she left them there to go home and make sandwiches for lunch, and after that headed back to the park. Once there, she placed their lunch on a park table and went looking for her siblings. By 1:15 the brothers and sisters had found the brown paper bag lunches waiting for them, but their older sister was nowhere to be found. 4. Malibu State Park Shooter Thirty-five-year-old, Irvine, California native, Tristan Beaudette, was inside his tent at Malibu Creek State Park when he was fatally shot and killed in his sleep. A veteran outdoorsman, he went on the camping trip to allow his wife, an obstetrician, some quiet time to study for an exam. Beaudette was with his two young daughters who were 4 and 2 years old and they were inside the tent with him when he was killed. They were left unharmed. His brother-in-law was also camping with them but he was staying in a different tent. 3. British Model Kidnapping Saga It was supposed to be another photoshoot For British model, Chloe Ayling. Her agent confirmed the booking and afterwards made the arrangements. However, after arriving on July 11 in Milan, Italy, she was accosted by two men. According to her statement, a man with black gloves put a hand on the back of her neck and the other on her mouth. Then another man injected her with something in her arm. Ayling lost consciousness and woke up in a pink bodysuit and socks. She was placed inside the trunk of a car, with her wrists and ankles bound. 2. Nicole Lovell When 13-year old Nicole Lovell snuck out of her Blacksburg, Virginia home on January 27, 2016, she thought she was heading out for a “secret date.” But it turned out, she wouldn’t be returning home ever again. Nicole was seventh grader who had befriended 18-year old, Virginia Tech student and cross-country athlete, David Eisenhauer, online. On January 27, it’s believed Eisenhauer and another Virginia-tech student named Natalie Keepers, lured Lovell out of her home under the pretense of a secret meeting. 1. Suspect in The Doodler Case The Doodler, was a serial killer who rampaged through the San Francisco area between the years 1974 and 75, targeting gay men. His MO was to strike up conversations with potential victims and then lure the men into sexual encounters. Once alone, he would stab them and leave them to die on beaches or in parks. The reason why he was dubbed as the “doodler” was because he was said to have drawn sketches of the men right before assaulting or killing them.
