Mixed Modern Family. It's a response to the ever growing disconnect between cultures and society. We focus on laughing, loving, understanding but mostly importantly knowing that's it's OK and we're doing just fine. #mmfam come be apart of the fam @mixedmodernfam
We stick a pin in the season this episode. Wrapping up a short but sweet run. Thank you to all of our guest for sharing their story. Until next time find us on IG at Mixed Modern Family
In this episode, we will speak with the mother of a transgender youth sharing some of her experiences. Her advice through any difficult parenting moment is to simply "Lean back and listen - stop getting in the way." Oftentimes, as parents, we take on the struggles of our children as our own - naturally so; however, in many cases, we make a bigger deal out of a situation than our own children do. Erin's son Cal was assigned female at birth. Erin gave Cal a female name as her first gift to her, and, as she so eloquently shared, the name simply wasn't the 'right size'. Cal's given name is no longer what he goes by, but Erin continues to love him and support him through his journey - albeit difficult, at times. The impact of society has definitely taken a toll on transgender rights and we hope that this podcast shines light on positivity and how we, as a society, can support everyone. Remember that we all have a story to tell!
Hey Fam, have you ever wondered if you’re really depressed or just feeling down. We talk about just that on this OLD episode of MMFAM. Check it out and if you’ve ever felt this way, know you’re not alone, NEVER alone and there are always people you can talk to.
Blended families aren't new, but they are definitely garnishing more attention. From fairy tales to current days, step-parenting is seen as 'evil', but shouldn't those who step in to raise another person's child be given the opportunity to show they aren't evil? Blended families exist within immediate parenting structures while grandparents and extended family are also supporting families. In this episode, we will discuss how multi-generational families, adoption, and blended families make up today's family structures. We will discuss these topics with our co-hosts, who each have their own perspective on the matter (as children of blended families and parenting within a multi-generational environment). Remember that we all have a story to tell!
We digest our sit down with Gary Ican Sparkman and share our thoughts in restorative justice.
Join us for part 2 of the Garry I Can Sparkman Episode. High Speed Chase, Drug Deal Gone Bad: Cop Got Shot - Don't Know Which Thug Pulled the Trigger Incarceration has a negative influence on families, but what happens when incarceration actually sparks positive life changes? In this episode, we have the opportunity to speak with Garry "I CAN" Sparkman, father of four who served nearly five years in prison. Since being released in 2008, Garry has founded the I CAN (Cultivate a Nation) Movement against negativity. Starting a life of drugs at the age of 13, he moved from marijuana to crack cocaine and ultimately was imprisoned for a drug deal gone bad - being falsely accused of shooting an officer. Two of his four children have Cerebral Palsy and those struggles, on top of serving time, moved him toward his faith where he learned to overcome negativity. Living through Tupac's lyrics of being the "spark that changes the nation", he has motivated many to overcome negativity and their own struggles. Listen as he shares his story and recognizes that "other people's perceptions don't have to be our reality".

Being a single parent has become something that some of us choose. In this episode, we will discuss how different parenting can look when one of the parents are absent - either by choice or not. We will discuss the importance of co-parenting whether you are still with the other parent or not. Single fathers are often revered while single mothers are simply expected to step up. Fathers who stay at home with their children are seen as 'rare' or 'baby-sitters'. Why is this double standard still prevalent in today's society? Let's chat about this topic and others while we speak to a single parent, Megan, and a wedded co-parent, QJ. Remember that we all have a story to tell!
Welcome to Mixed Modern Family! My name is QJ and I’m the host of this podcast. MMFam is a podcast about imperfect people, having imperfect conversations, about their imperfect life. This episode we introduce Megan Fuciarelli to the Mixed Modern Family. Megan will be joining us this season as a special guest host. We will explore her story and the unique work she does with bias and “isms” Check it out and as always check us out online on IG, FB, Twitter and Venmo if you’d like to contribute $$$ lol just kidding...unless you gone do it (-_-)
It's been a slow burn but we are finally ready to cook! MMFAM is BACK. With new guests, a new co host and a new energy. Mixed Modern Family is here to explore the stories of the modern family. How it can differ greatly from the 2.5 kids and white picket fence we were all sold as kids. Most importantly to highlight the value in diverse stories. Get ready because we are about some fun. On the Mixed Modern Family.
There either some exciting things going or a bunch of random noises, either way Season 3 is turning the corner and leaving the gate. Get ready for the ride.
As Outkast once said, " Even the sun goes down...", In that same line of thought, it’s now time for us to take a long pause here at #MMFAM. We need to to create new and exciting material. To do so we must first take a good look at where we are and determine where we want to be. This season has been nothing less than amazing. Thank you for being apart of the Mixed Modern Family. The saga continues at www.mixedmodernfamily.com. You can catch us there all summer long. Until then just know that you are liked, you are loved but most importantly, know you are OK... Can't wait for season 3!
Filling the wire with good stories; that’s the goal of Ben from The Urban Dads. Tired of the negative images portrayed of Black fathers online and in social media, Ben set out to change the conversation and uplift Black fathers, highlighting and celebrating Black fatherhood through The Urban Dads movement. As a dad himself, Ben also has a son on the autistic spectrum. We talk about the cultural differences of dealing with conditions like Autism in the Black Community. Sometimes in deep denial, but in efforts to advise, we say silly things, “He’ll grow out of it”, or “I peed on the floor till I was 18, and look at me now!” These are well meaning things, but not always the most useful things…Ben and I just get honest and break it all down. All that AND what conversation would be complete about black fatherhood without discussing some of the greatest black TV fathers of all time...along with some of the not so great. Settle in for a good episode! Enjoy.
Autism; what is it? That's what we learn on this week’s episode as #MMFAM originals Matt & Beth, join Mrs K and I to walk us through their family's journey with Autism. With two incredible, autistic children, Matt and Beth know all the layers, the true trials and real triumphs of Autism. From seeing their children's brilliant minds, to embracing the way the world impacts them, Matt and Beth help to educate us on the understanding that no two experiences on the Spectrum are the same and show us just how grateful a family can be to have gotten this diagnosis. It's a jam packed episode, with laughs and love and wisdom and perspective from these two, so join us for the ride. And stick around till the end as we have some first time, special guests to close out the episode.
After a brief recharge, this week we sit down with one of my dearest friends and chop it up. Mark Staton is a pastor and a social worker but more importantly, a dad. This week we talk about the experience of the black dad, how to deal with the challenges unique to us and how people cope. Some conversations on this show are more natural than others. This week's was Fantastic! It was as real as it gets. Thanks again to Mark for opening up and sharing his story.
This week we get ready for spring break by connecting some thoughts. Thinking back on some conversations, I have a revelation of sorts. The importance of how your career should be just like your wife. Randomly I manage to bring Trump and firemen into the conversation but don’t worry there’s not too much controversy this week. Enjoy.
Spring is here, just remember spring cleaning doesn’t just apply to getting rid of excess stuff you can also take this chance to get rid of those people in your life that bring you down. Have a great week and just know that you are liked, you are loved but most importantly, you’re OK. Mrs K stops by to keep me on track. Until Mixed Modern Family takes off, we still have regular 9 to 5 J-O-B’s. Mrs K, gently reminds me that we do these recordings sometimes far past the bewitching hour. That’s sends us down this week’s rabbit hole of goodness. We also talk about some our favorite hair care products for the girls in the Mixed Chicks hair care line. These products have been more than amazing for our kids. From the detanglers, to the brush. Mrs K and I dive into what works well for us and what we think you might like Thank again to Mrs K from riding shotgun and being my partner... Love you turtle
Amber Anderson stops by the studio to continue our talk about relationships. We love hearing origin stories of how people met, and Amber tells us about how she fell in love with her husband’s lightning bolt hair, his quirks and his chivalry (AND the legit swagger move that reeled her in). How do you know when it’s time to get married? Is fate a thing? Just how and when do we talk to our kids about race? And what's for dinner?? No, seriously. Aren’t you making dinner? All that and more as Amber breaks down life as a working mother of four, maintaining her creative side, keeping up with @OliveJuiceBlog, keeping up with that husband energy, and all while keeping it real for the Mixed Modern Family.
This week, we look at another side of the mixed modern family experience as we talk with Sam Anderson. Father of four, husband, and Pastor, Sam walks with me through the sucky parts of marriage, diversity in the church, and filling out that Nissan Envy. Sam is a truth preaching, dad life loving, down to earth dude, keepin it 100. And this episode is jam packed with #mmfam topics including loving our kids, marriage and timing, racial divides AND Sam schools us on our ‘soul care’ habits. We also dig in on the current relevance, or arguable irrelevanceof the church and how it plays out in the new political climate, wading through polarization, empathy and healthy disagreement. I also poke a little to find out if everyone really is welcome at church, like the sign says. In the end, Sam shares his perspective (brought to you by thee JC) that the goal is unity and the way is grace and forgiveness and caring for each other more than we care for ourselves. Food for thought. I’ll bite. Tell us what you think. @mixedmodernfamily on Twitter @mixedmodernfamily on Instagram and www.mixedmodernfamily.com
Check out this week’s episode as we sit down with one of L.A.P.D.’s finest, former Officer Anthony Escobar. This is a guy I’ve come to gain tremendous respect for in a short period of time. In this episode, Anthony and I are able to have an honest and open conversation, diving into Black Lives Matter and Blue Lives Matter. This week’s conversation is very important to me because the topic is the reason Mixed Modern Family exists. I set out to shine light on the back stories and the understanding that seem to get lost in oversimplification these days. There’s not really a right or wrong conclusion. We simply wanted to share different perspectives. Today I think we do just that. Once you’ve checked out today’s episode, I encourage you to have a healthy conversation with your friends or acquaintances with different points of view. And reach out to your local law enforcement officers. Let's talk to each other. Let's listen to each other. So, thanks for this listen. Have a great week and know that you are liked, you are loved and most importantly, you're okay. Big thanks to Anthony Escobar Want to support law enforcement and future law enforcement? Have you ever wondered what the cultural experience is like for those who are biracial or multicultural? This week we talk with multicultural film maker Eli Steele about his latest creation, “I am or How Jack Became Black”. This film is a wonderful exploration into the reality multicultural people deal with in identifying with the different cultures that make up their ancestral background. Sometimes forced to check a box, Eli takes on a journey of exploration into the various experience of being multicultural Eli has been a filmmaker for quite sometime now. With pilot projects for MTV as well as other previous work. What I find interesting about his film making it that he is partially deaf. While this is not a topic of his latest film, it intrigue me to know how it impacts his filmmaking style...BUT please, do not take that as a criticism. It’s more of an acknowledgement of how being deaf could add another awesome dimension to the filmmaking process. So enjoy this week's episode. Hey fam, this week’s conversation is dedicated to all that struggle with suicidal thoughts and depression. Depression can feel very lonely and unforgiving. You feel as though no one can relate but we disagree. In today’s discussion we talk about the realities of dealing with depression and real steps you can take to address it. This was just one sincere conversation about depression and suicide. There’s a lot we covered, but there’s so much more that we didn’t even get to. So please, keep talking. Say more. I want to take a minute to really drive home the idea that feeling suicidal is not always a place or a space that a person can think their way out of on their own. Its very existence requires that ideas that seem “more rational”, in the very least, are difficult to access or act on. And fighting depression, it’s relentless. It’s hard to realize that you are even in the clenches before you are deep in the hole with the darkness closing in. And fighting a battle so unforgiving and so personal and that damn stealthy… well, these are some of the strongest people among us humans. And we don’t give them enough credit. QJ asks, if I only had one minute to help a person who is thinking of ending their life, what would I say… and during the conversation, I struggled with this question because I know so deeply that the response to a person feeling this low cannot be just some pocket line of supposed sunshine. Because they have likely been through a different pain than I could ever even begin to comprehend or imagine or think up. If you feel this way, please know that you are not alone, you DO have choices. Find community, like a church. Make a new friend for which you can tell all your faults. Finally, please call The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline @ 800.273.8255 if all else fails. Just know that you...YES YOU are liked, your are loved but most importantly, you are OK. S2 E5 - The Seth Anderson aka Syblyng Episode | Assemble Sound, Detroit Music History in the Making & Signs This week, we have the distinct privilege of sitting down with one of the founding members of Assemble Sound, ridiculously talented music producer and dad, Seth Anderson. Knee deep in the middle of the latest Flint Eastwood project, Seth allows us into the studio to see the vision of Assemble Sound and what brings it to life. More than a recording studio, Assemble Sound is at ground zero of the rebirth of Detroit. Historically rooted in the middle of Detroit’s Corktown, and just past the site of the old Tiger Stadium, Assemble Sound is rebuilding the pipeline of talent by supporting authentic artistry and collaboration to put Detroit’s musical relevance back in the forefront. It’s a real human experience. And behind it all you’ll find Seth Anderson. A more subtle person, Seth is not one to seek the spotlight. He’s a show up, show out and go home type of guy. And he embodies the creative culture and hard working spirit of the near to me, dear to me, Detroit City. So enjoy this week’s episode! “Why do people always question my child’s identity and why are they questioning me being her mother, when it's obvious looking at the embrace between the two of us, that she is my child?” Mother of two, Diedre Anthony searched for thoughts, ideas, and resources to help her navigate parenting in a multiracial family. Despite her efforts, she was surprised to come up short. So she created her own and intentionally titled it, “Are those Your kids?”. Today we hear about her family, her blog, and we hash out racial stigma and identity assumptions as we talk through Diedre’s internal journey and experiences in motherhood. This episode has great advice for giving multiracial kids a solid foundation of heritage, plus keyboard bully management AND we dig in about that curly hair! So, with that, I hope you enjoy this week's episode as much as I enjoyed recording it. Big thanks to Diedre Anthony! There are times in your life where you just need a sanity check, you need to get with friends you trust to see if you’re crazy. With the current political climate and the state of our country, I do just that and that’s why I choose to sit down with Chris. A pastor at Central Church, Chris and I both grew up in Baptist Churches. The thing is, my version of Baptist and his are totally different. We talk about it. Then talk about the things we’re seeing going on in the world today. Chris has a more conservative background than I . Given the conversation, I thought it may come in handy. I knew he’d be a great person to discuss some of my thoughts and feelings I’ve been battling with since the election. For me it comes down to the hypocrisy of it all. Makes me want to sing a little MJ, Man in the mirror. The thing I love most about our conversation is that we can talk from different perspectives. It doesn’t feel confrontational, it doesn’t feel uncomfortable, and it doesn’t feel fake. It as real as it gets. In this conversation we talk about some hot button topics. We talk about politics, the conservative perspective, along with a more liberal view. The conversation get’s so real, we just go there and discuss Pro Life and Pro Choice scenarios. I love these types of conversations because they create a space for seeing things differently. It’s gets a little goofy at the end as I realize that old people are ruining the internet. Thanks to Chris Johnson for the conversation. MIXED MODERN FAMILY - S2 E2 | MEGHAN JOY & SEBORN YANCY | Marriage, Mixed, & Minivans In this week’s episode we sit down with Meghan Joy & Seborn Yancy. Meghan and Seborn are parents of five beautiful children in addition to being in an interracial relationship. We talk to them about their journey as a family. Meghan is an Author and blogger. We learn all about her website and the inspiration that brought it to life. I love this week’s podcast because it showcases the the challenges and triumphs they face as an interracial family. We get to learn about life dealing with five kids. With three of my own, I could only imagine the challenges that come with 2 additional people to be responsible for. I always laugh when people that say it get’s easier the more you have. It always makes me wonder what the “it” is they refer to? Because it’s certainly not maintaining your sanity...or anything else I can think of for that matter. Hahaha This episode we also talk about home schooling. It’s a subject i’m very interested in having children of my own. As someone that went to public school, the idea of home school is very foreign to me. And by foreign, I mean outer space alien foreign. Which is makes me incredibly judgemental and a ridiculously ignorant way. So I look forward to learning more about homeschooling and all the good that comes with it. I hope you enjoy. Here’s where to find today’s guest. MIXED MODERN FAMILY -SEASON 2 INTRO Happy New Year Everyone and welcome to 2017! We took some time to recharge the batteries and reconnect with our loved ones. If your holiday season was like ours, you had good intentions on limiting the gifts for the kids but quickly got carried away. Now we’re all trying to figure out where all the extra STUFF is going to go. If you’ve already fallen short on your news resolution for 2017, just know that it’s never too late to start over. You don’t need to wait to 2018. No need to get down on yourself. We all fall down to get back up. This episode, we look back at the inception of Mixed Modern Family and it’s origin story. Mixed Modern Family was a response to the ever growing disconnect in society. It’s my story. It’s a response. It’s my attempt to share perspectives. We are here to illuminate stories of human beings. So help us. Laugh with us. Learn with us as we kick off Season 2. Thank you to: Lisa of www.ohsheblogs.com. - Thank you for helping to make the website what it is. MIXED MODERN FAMILY S1 E9 | Season Finale - Be You. Thank You’s. Get To Know Your Police. Be Happy Well. It’s not time to say goodbye but it is time to says let’s see other people...j/k We wrap this thing up and get ready for the reload. Thank you so much for listening. You make this show happen. This podcast started as a response to the chaos I saw going on in the world. We wanted to bring light to the situations that caused young black men to be shot. Everyone has a purpose. Everyone has a meaning. Life matters. To marginalize a person is to dehumanize them. This season was built to be a galvanizing force for good. While we never wanted to change any opinions, we did want to show a different perspective. There are tough topics out there and they are just not being approached head on. This season we wanted to take on those topics to hopefully start some conversations. Reach out to an old friend and say Hi, I miss you. We talk about succeeding at being you. Being a survivor. I give my opinion on why viewership is down in the NFL ***SPOILER ALERT*** it’s the commercials. We also talk a little basketball and protest. There’s also an honorable mention of pagers. The conversations gets meaty as we discuss forgiveness for others. It then ventures to how we have forgiveness for those that agree with us yet can’t forgive those who we oppose. Coach T educates us on restorative justice. I then admit to low EMOTIONAL intelligence. We then discuss why it’s important. This episode is meaty folks but such a good listen.
