Galloway is in deep with crystal meth in 2005, dodging help from his HIV doctor and dragging his family through the collateral damage. David Crabb waitered through the days after 9/11 at one of the only open restaurants in lower Manhattan, listening to strangers unburden themselves over candlelight. I've been upping the mileage this week and am back to the levels I was achieving prior to my shin splints. I know, I need to be careful, but it is clear that I don't lose my "legs" during my enforced stoppage. This week, I ran into several new faces as well as some old faces. I interviewed Dennis the shuttle driver, Paddle and Lucky Charms after their successful Four State Challenge, and Nuke, who just started his flip flop a week ago from Harper's Ferry. I'm using Polarsteps to record my AT thru-hike this year. If you'd like to follow my progress between episodes, as well as photos of my journey, please go to https://www.polarsteps.com/mightyblue and click on the follow button. Brittany Ross and Sam Feirstein are both hungry for it in this episode: the moment someone finally looks your way and says, yes, you. For Brittany, that moment arrives in the least expected form. She is in her early 20s, grinding through acting classes and princess gigs and bar shifts, desperate for anyone in Los Angeles to see her as the star she knows she could be. When a neighbor with an apparent break from reality begins accusing Brittany of following her through the apartment building, Brittany finds herself oddly reluctant to shut it down. The woman is unhinged, possibly dangerous, and giving Brittany more attention than anyone in Hollywood has managed in years. Sam's wound runs deeper. His story begins at a dressing room in a North Hollywood strip mall in 1976, where a single word from his mother sets off a decade of relentless bullying. By the time he lands at a commercial casting in the 1990s, surrounded by quarterbacks and cheerleaders, the kid who won a writing contest nobody noticed is just trying to get one person to see him as something other than a problem. While his nine-year-old son was fighting stage three cancer, Nick Stevens was driving around buying up scrap tungsten carbide just to keep food on the table. It worked well enough that one day, sitting in the hospital room, his son said to him: “Dad, why don’t you just start your own business and be your own boss?” Today Nick and his cousin Joey run JC Metals, going around the country paying cash on the spot for the carbide piling up in shops. And they refuse to sell a pound of it overseas even when buyers offer them more money to do it. Listen on your favorite podcast app using pod.link.     . Main Points While You Wait, the Price Moves Carbide tooling has gotten expensive. Between the tariffs and China restricting exports, prices have been swinging all over the place. Every machine shop has scrap carbide sitting around, worn inserts and chipped end mills that are useless for precision work but still worth real money as raw material. A lot of shops don’t realize how much. Nick says he walks into places with piles of carbide they’re practically throwing away, not knowing it’s worth $40,000 or $50,000. JC Metals buys it and sells it to a private US processor, one that recently received what Nick describes as an $11 million government grant to buy up as much domestic carbide as possible and keep it in American manufacturing. The major toolmakers all have their own buyback programs too. Kennametal, Sandvik, Seco. They work, but the model is the same: ship your material out and wait on a check for 15 to 30 days. With prices moving the way they are, the number you agreed to when you shipped is not the same number when the check clears. JC Metals shows up with their own scales, weighs everything in front of you, and pays you that day. Cash, wire, Zelle, ACH, whatever you want. The Geopolitics of Scrap China controls about 85 percent of the world’s tungsten carbide supply and has been cutting off exports. Foreign buyers have been approaching American shops directly, offering 30 to 40 percent more per pound to ship the material back overseas. Nick says he outbid one of those buyers last month, knowing he would lose money doing it, because he didn’t want the material leaving the country. Tungsten carbide is a core component of armor-piercing ammunition, from rifle rounds to tank rounds. It’s also used in nuclear weapons casing. Until this interview I knew tungsten carbide was a big deal for manufacturers. I had no idea about the national security ramifications. Changing the Scrapper Stigma My great grandfather was in the scrap metal business. One reason my grandfather went into used machinery instead was that he found the scrap business unsavory, manipulating scales, shady deals. When we had a warehouse it wasn’t uncommon for scrappers to pull up in a truck and steal from Graff-Pinkert. Nick and Joey bring their own scales so there’s no question about the weight. The company name, JC Metals, stands for Jesus Christ Metals, a nod to the faith that carried them through Jack’s illness. Jack Stevens, Nick’s son, is ten months cancer free. Question: What do you do with your scrap carbide?

Host: Dan Panetti   Guys, being a dad is awesome…and an awesome responsibility. As I reflect on the journey of parenting, there are some important truths that I want to share with younger guys about some important life lessons of being a dad.   You'll hear it often - the days are long, but the years are short. Time really does fly as a parent - so don't miss it! The younger years, those developmental/formational years of your child's life are paramount - and I know your work outside the home is important, but your work inside the home is even more valuable! Men, be involved and connected to your family. My friend Ricky Chelette always says that kids need three things from their dad - affection, affirmation, and attention. Those are vital to the development of your children!   Also, I just wrote my first book about the importance of making sure that you focus your time, energy, and attention on the spiritual formation of your children. Temporary things, like sports and academics, demand so much attention and easily consume all of our focus and energy - but building your child's character and spiritual life are the most important job you have as a dad!   Anyway, hopefully some good content delivered in this one for younger dads wanting to be the best dads they can be!   T4M guys - just a reminder that Training4Manhood is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) ministry and you can make donations either via Zelle (info@training4manhood.com) or by visiting the Training4Manhood website.

The Space Show Presents Dr. Ryan Dowdy re ISS & Artemis Astronaut Food, May 15, 2026, FridayQuick Summary:The Space Show featured Dr. Ryan Dowdy, a former NASA ISS Food System Manager, discussing food in space and his commercial food company ReadyBar. Dowdy explained how NASA's 20-person team in Houston produces all space food, with 60+ signatures required for each item due to government regulations. He detailed the challenges of providing nutrition for astronauts, including the need for 500-calorie meal replacement bars and the importance of fresh food for psychological well-being. The discussion covered topics like packaging limitations, radiation effects on food, and the potential for growing food in space. Dowdy also shared information about his company ReadyBar, which makes meal-replacement bars designed to replace an entire meal with 30 grams of protein and 15 grams of fiber for $5.99, currently sold online with plans to expand to retailers and Amazon. The conversation explored how commercial space companies are developing their own food systems and the need for continued R&D investment in space food technology.Detailed Summary:Ryan discussed the challenges and innovations in providing food for astronauts, particularly focusing on NASA's ISS and Artemis missions. He explained how meal replacement bars became popular due to cost and packaging efficiency considerations, noting that 60% of food weight on the ISS was packaging that was discarded. Ryan described his work at NASA from 2016, where he helped update the food menu by adding more fish, fruits, and vegetables to address astronauts' nutritional needs for omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants. The discussion concluded with Ryan sharing how he initially became interested in space food science through a professor's suggestion to directly ask NASA about their challenges rather than proposing solutions without understanding their needs.Ryan also discussed his experience as the ISS Food System Manager at NASA's Space Food Systems Laboratory, explaining how food scientists create meals designed to last up to two years in space. He described the process of working with astronauts to taste and rank approximately 200 menu items, noting that while shrimp cocktail was a popular choice, the Russian crew preferred more soup in their meals, leading to food exchanges between the two teams. When asked about future food options for space missions, Ryan clarified that while no insects were consumed on the ISS during his tenure, there is potential for growing food in space, though current plant growth experiments like the Veggie system didn't provide sufficient daily calories. He concluded that while space food systems aren't ready for long-duration missions like Mars yet, continued research through initiatives like the Deep Space Food Challenge is necessary.Special thanks to our sponsors:American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Helix Space in Luxembourg, Celestis Memorial Spaceflights, Astrox Corporation, Dr. Haym Benaroya of Rutgers University, The Space Settlement Progress Blog by John Jossy, The Atlantis Project, and Artless EntertainmentWe use Zoom phone numbers for program participation. For real time program participation, email Dr. Space at: drspace@thespaceshow.com for instructions and access. The Space Show is a non-profit 501C3 through its parent, One Giant Leap Foundation, Inc. The Space Show Presents Andrew Rush of Star Catcher, Friday, 6-1926Quick Summary:This Space Show program featured Andrew Rush, CEO of Star Catcher, discussing their development of an orbital energy grid using power beaming technology. Andrew explained how his network of satellites would collect solar energy and transmit it via laser beams to client satellites in low Earth orbit, enabling them to deliver significantly more power without requiring larger solar arrays or changes to the satellites' orientation. The technology aims to address power constraints in space by delivering up to 100 kilowatts per power node, with plans to provide commercial service by the end of the decade. The discussion covered potential applications including orbital data centers, lunar power distribution, and extending the operational life of existing satellites, with Andrew noting they had raised $65 million in Series A funding and were actively hiring.Andrew Rush, CEO of Star Catcher, discussed the company's efforts to create the first orbital energy grid through power beaming satellites. He explained that Star Catcher has developed a network of power beaming satellites using solar concentrators and multi-wavelength laser systems to deliver additional power to client satellites in low Earth orbit. Andrew reported significant progress, including over 40 letters of intent signed and 6-7 power purchase agreements, demonstrating strong market demand for the technology. He clarified that while each power node can deliver about 100 kilowatts of energy, the system is designed for one-to-many architecture with multiple beams, and as a U.S. company, they remain subject to ITAR regulations.Andrew explained that client satellites in the Star Catcher network don't need to change their orientation to receive power from the system's power nodes in low Earth orbit at 1500 kilometers altitude. He detailed how the power beaming uses near-infrared and visible wavelengths compatible with both silicon and gallium arsenide solar cells, with different requirements for each type of cell. Philip suggested using the infrastructure to help satellites escape the atmosphere more easily, potentially reducing launch costs, which Andrew acknowledged as a promising use case, particularly for electric propulsion systems.Special thanks to our sponsors:American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Helix Space in Luxembourg, Celestis Memorial Spaceflights, Astrox Corporation, Dr. This one originally aired in August 2013, and the fathers in it tend toward the unexpectedly generous. And heck, this episode may as well be part of our Fathers Day Stories series! Chesley Calloway grew up in Baton Rouge largely without his dad, a Gulf Coast redneck-hippie who was always in the woods. At 15, a familiar smell triggers a memory and opens an unlikely conversation that changes everything between them. The détente holds until college, ideology, and vegetarianism pull them apart again. Gretchen Menter-Felice's father ran a funeral home out of the family garage, and she grew up sitting in the corner of his embalming room in a yellow chair while he worked. By her 20s, his cancer diagnosis and a new girlfriend had made him feel far away. She finds a way back. (Content note: death of a parent) Colleen Hindsley's father was a classically trained baritone who owned an Irish pub and could work any name into a song. He raised a household that was always singing. When lung cancer took his voice, it silenced the whole family. (00:00:34) In September 2024, RISK! shared a story by Robin Gelfenbien all about Colleen Hidsley, who has since passed away, in an episode called What A Vision: risk-show.com/podcast/what-a-vision  And Dan Kennedy is 16, upside down in a totaled car on a residential street in rural Northern California, sitting at a stranger's piano and dreading his father's arrival. This is a bit of a transition episode for the podcast. I wanted to talk about going back to the trail this week, but there isn't a great deal to say about it that I haven't already said. So this week I sat down and recorded a few reflections on what I've learned in forests and on mountains over the past twelve years.                                   It's a little bit rough and ready, and I did it with the barest of notes, but I hope that several of the things I talk about resonate with one or two of you.                                                           I'm using Polarsteps to record my AT thru-hike this year. The audio is being archived here and on The Space Show website for this date, www.thespaceshow.com.The Space Show Present Manuel Cuba with The Space Show Team for a general discussion, Sunday, 6-14-26Meeting Summary:The meeting was a space show discussion hosted by David Livingston, with participants including Manuel, Philip, GuySchumann, Marshall, John Jossy, and Sherry. The main guest Cesar from Peru was expected to join but experienced technical difficulties connecting from the airport, so the group decided to reschedule his full interview. The participants discussed various space-related topics including SpaceX's recent IPO, the government's UAP document release, ISDC conference experiences, and NASA's Artemis III crew selection. GuySchumann provided updates on his work in drought mitigation using space-based predictive analytics, while the group also shared insights about recent space conferences and debated whether crew weight and mass considerations might factor into lunar mission planning.Detailed SummaryManuel shared his positive experience attending AIAA in Washington D.C., describing it as worth every penny despite the high cost. The group discussed the potential duration of an upcoming show, with Manuel indicating it should be between 60 and 90 minutes and mentioning that Caesar would have significant content to share. The conversation briefly touched on SpaceX's recent IPO and the mixed opinions from the financial community regarding its economic prospects and future quarterly reporting requirements. The group discussed David's having seen the Spielberg movie, “Disclosure Day,” which explores the concept of “Disclosure Day” regarding extraterrestrials. David reviewed the movie positively, noting it features good acting and innovative storytelling, though he personally doesn't share Spielberg's precise views on extraterrestrials nor how disclosure day will take place, assuming it ever does take place. .Guy Schumann discussed a follow-up conversation with Chris Bures from his last program appearance with us when a listener from Las Vegas, Chris, engaged him and his company about water supply and drought issues in Nevada and the west, where Chris had offered to connect him with municipal and state contacts but the response status remained unclear. Guy explained that while they don't currently have direct municipal contacts in Las Vegas, they partner with a Florida-based company to provide flood modeling and risk assessments for counties in the US, though this partnership is currently focused on Florida rather than the Western states. Marshall raised concerns about weather pattern challenges in Oklahoma, specifically the need to manage both drought and sudden heavy rainfall during harvest season, which Guy acknowledged as a widespread issue affecting both European and US agriculture. The group discussed challenges in predicting and preparing for extreme weather events, with GuySchumann highlighting the difficulty of predicting short-acting events and staying within community budgets. Marshall shared that his brother-in-law could significantly increase crop output with just four months of weather prediction, leading to a discussion about seasonal forecasting improvements enabled by AI and space data. GuySchumann described the rapid technological development in extreme weather prediction over the past five years, noting that progress has accelerated to the point where conferences are overwhelming due to the pace of innovation. The Wisdom Team discussed SpaceX's recent IPO, with Philip noting that many retail investors are making long-term bets on space exploration rather than seeking immediate returns. Marshall expressed caution about buying shares until next week, while David mentioned plans to purchase shares for his trust to benefit his children. Manuel recommended reading Robert Zimmerman's blog post about the IPO, though David thought Zimmerman was overly optimistic. John Jossy observed that space stocks were down on Friday, with some speculation that investors were selling other space companies to buy SpaceX shares. We talked at length about SpaceX's IPO and Elon Musk's public approach to his companies. GuySchumann shared his perspective on Musk's vision for space exploration and how it could inspire public investment, comparing it to the excitement around early personal computers. The discussion touched on how Musk's public persona and rhetoric might change due to SEC oversight, with GuySchumann suggesting he would be more careful out of a sense of responsibility to shareholders. The conversation also covered the regulatory challenges Musk would face as a public company CEO and the potential for litigation, while Marshall noted that Shotwell appears to be the next person in line for leadership at SpaceX.Phil reported that his presentation about moon-based data centers went well at ISDC, with good audience engagement and questions. He also mentioned other notable speakers including David Dillon from Electromagnetic Launch who discussed quench gun technology, and presentations about Venus colonization and biological methods for making structural components in space. David expressed frustration about Blue Origin's reluctance to participate in his show, noting that the company prefers controlled environments where they can restrict discussion topics rather than facing an unpredictable audience. The group discussed keynotes from a recent space conference, including presentations by Harrison Schmidt, Lindy Tompkins, and Bill Diamond of SETI. Manuel shared insights from his attendance at the conference, where he met with Space Tango and a South Korean pharmaceutical company to explore low Earth orbit life sciences facilities and potential research opportunities with the Department of War. The participants also briefly discussed the recent U.S. government's UAP document release, noting that while it generated some media attention, it didn't receive widespread public focus. The group discussed the upcoming Spacecom conference in January in Florida, which Manuel found interesting due to its focus on satellite communication and launch systems. They also discussed the timing of the next SpaceX Starship test flight, which is targeted for July 2026, with speculation about whether it might coincide with the July 4th holiday. The conversation then shifted to discussing Keith Cowling, who received a Pioneer Award from NSS despite controversy, and the upcoming NSS elections where several space show personalities are running for positions. The team mentioned NASA's selection of an all-male crew for the Artemis III mission, with Phil proposing a theory that the heavier male astronauts were chosen for this low-orbit mission to maximize payload capacity, while future missions might favor lighter crew members including women. The discussion included technical considerations about weight, oxygen consumption, and space requirements for astronauts, with David sharing insights from his scuba diving experience about how weight and gender can affect mission planning. The conversation ended with plans to reschedule Cesar's interview.Special thanks to our sponsors:American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Helix Space in Luxembourg, Celestis Memorial Spaceflights, Astrox Corporation, Dr. We took up four questions: (1) What are the parameters of philosophical/ethical bribery? (2) How do you navigate having friends who could potentially have a bad influence on you, and how might you have a good influence on them? (3) What would you say to a person who is unaware that the Torah cares about our inner life? (4) How does one explain our yeshiva when asked about it? (I was actually asked another question about my thoughts on the role of Israel in our Jewish life, but I declined to answer - not only because I keep all my Zionism articles behind a paywall, but because I'm considering writing another one this summer and I don't want to make any statements until I've written it.)This was my last YBT shiur of 2025-2026, and what a great year it's been.   Guest: Kelly Cassels   What should you be doing today to be able to celebrate a meaningful Father's Day in the future? I had an awesome conversation with my brother-in-law Kelly about how to move past the anger and hurt from the past to a place of experiencing the joy of being a dad with a family that loves and appreciates you!   Kelly and I both agree that the most important thing you can do is to get your life right with the Lord - to accept the free gift of forgiveness and salvation made available through His only and only Son Jesus Christ! Once that relationship has been forged, then prayerfully ask God to help you be the man that He has created and designed for you to be - and be ready to see God at work!   And Scripture tells you how valuable a meaningful relationship of an older man with a younger man is to the wellbeing of both! Titus 2 tells us that an older man should be teaching younger men. If you're an older guy, look to discipline a younger man. If you're a younger guy, find an older man walking with the Lord and glean wisdom from him.   And finally, just a word of encouragement to that older guy who looks back over his shoulder and sees a wake of disappointment left behind - today is the day of salvation and transformation - God isn't done with you yet! Surrender your life to the Lord and ask God to restore the years the locust has eaten - and see what He will do!   T4M guys - just a reminder that Training4Manhood is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) ministry and you can make donations either via Zelle (info@training4manhood.com) or by visiting the Training4Manhood website.

In San Francisco, 2014, four great storytellers took the RISK! stage at SF Sketch Fest: Stephen Tobolowsky was directing the New York premiere of The Miss Firecracker Contest with Holly Hunter in the lead and a stalker with a ticket for opening night. The question of whether to go on becomes a different question entirely when Holly disappears into the basement holding what looks like a butcher knife. Dana Gould spent years as pen pal and friend to Maila Nurmi, the actress who invented Vampira, destitute and barely known, living in a converted garage. He reads from the last letter he wrote her. (Content note: child sexual abuse) Nato Green landed a yard-work job at 16, took about fifteen years to figure out what his employer actually wanted, and has some thoughts on what actually protects kids. Brendon Walsh got his hat ruined, his face rearranged, his brass knuckles confiscated, and his name put on a court docket, in that order. Mighty Blue On The Appalachian Trail: The Ultimate Mid-Life Crisis

Today, Greg Fisher takes us back to the Appalachian Trail in the 1960s, when he and two other 16-year-olds took a 17-day hike on the trail in New Hampshire, taking in the awesome Franconia Ridge along the way.                                                                   For Greg, that led to a more than 50 year love of the trail that continues to this day. He shares his stories with Steve as he looks back on that long history, returning to it earlier this year when he reunited with his hiking buddy, Doc, for the first time in over 20 years.                                       Also today, Steve catches up with Elizabeth Thompson from the Hike the Good Hike cohort, as she gives her definition of hiking success that resonates with Steve. I'm using Polarsteps to record my AT thru-hike this year. If you'd like to follow my progress between episodes, as well as photos of my journey, please go to https://www.polarsteps.com/mightyblue and click on the follow button. I used my hike in 2024 on the South West Coast Path in the UK to help raise money for my absolute favorite charity, Parenting Matters, on whose board I've been privileged to serve for over a decade. You can learn more about the hike and the organization–and donate–by visiting Hike with Steve - Empowering Parents, One Step at a Time | Parenting Matters %. I hope you want to support this critical mission. Don't forget. Our entire series of videos from our Woods Hole Weekend in 2022 is now FREE and available at my YouTube page at Woods Hole Weekend - Trailer There, you'll find all sorts of tips and tricks that our guests took away from the weekend that helped them with their own hikes this year. Check it out. I often ask listeners for ideas on who to interview, and I'm sure several of you say, "I could do that. I've got an awesome story to tell." You're the person we need to hear from. If you'd like to be interviewed on the podcast, just register as a guest on the link below, and I'll be in touch. Come on the show! If you like what we're doing on the Hiking Radio Network, and want to see our shows continue, please consider supporting us with either a one-off or monthly donation. You'll find the donate button on each Hiking Radio Network page at Hiking Radio Network . Additionally, you can join our membership at Steve (Mighty Blue) Adams. It's worth checking out what is on offer for you there. If you prefer NOT to use PayPal, you can now support us via check by mailing it to Mighty Blue Publishing, 3821 Milflores Drive, Sun City Center, FL 33573. Any support is gratefully received. Additionally, you can "Zelle" me a donation to steve@hikingradionetwork.com. Or "Venmo" me at @‌Steve-Adams-105. They both work! If you'd like to take advantage of my book offer (all three of my printed hiking books–with a personal message and signed by me–for $31, including postage to the United States) send a check payable to Mighty Blue Publishing at the address just above.

Two stories from people who found themselves in situations they didn't choose and had to figure out what to do from inside them. Guest-hosted by the captivating Cyndi Freeman. (Content note: references to torture) Sofia Javed is a Pakistani-American interpreter hired to work in Uzbek and Russian at Guantanamo Bay, where she is ordered not to sympathize with detainees and then immediately put to the test. What starts as a potential crisis in a cellblock turns on a single, surprisingly mundane demand. (Content note: physical abuse, domestic violence) Heather Minter grew up in an evangelical fundamentalist family that uprooted itself for the mission field in Papua New Guinea, leaving her and her brother in a boarding school dorm run by a cruel and volatile house father. The faith that held her together through childhood eventually came apart in college, and what filled the void turned out to be its own kind of trap. One chilly Seattle night in February 2014, four storytellers on the RISK! stage said some things they probably wouldn't have otherwise said out loud. Dan Savage told the story of his early days writing Savage Love in Seattle, doing drag to hide his identity, and one late-night encounter that left him genuinely bewildered by his own desire. (Content note: murder, sexual assault) Kelleen Conway Blanchard grew up carrying fragments of a story no child should know: her cousin Pam was murdered in her apartment, and the man everyone suspected walked free. Twenty years later, a phone call changed what Kelleen knew, though not necessarily how it felt. Summer Waldron was freshly divorced, newly medicated for depression, and committed to a long-planned threesome. Then the night itself unraveled, pulled apart by side effects, a panicked call from her mother, and a body that had simply stopped cooperating. Emmett Montgomery nearly died of hypothermia on a high school survival trip in the Utah desert, hallucinating through every bad decision on the way there.
