Back from November 2021, this episode is just bonkers: original songs, sound collages, audio easter eggs, and other inanities stacked one on top of another. We've got stamps.com jingles, a goth lament about needing a public toilet, TS Madison hollering about a good dick, a Cinderella scene that curdles into filth, and a thank-you number built entirely out of Kevin's orgasm noises. Bits by and from Jeff Barr, Soce the Elemental Wizard, Brian Babylon, David Crabb, John LaSala, Detox, Alaska, and a stray Tom Brady sample wander through too. For nearly an hour, RISK! sets the stories aside and just plays. Two classic RISK! stories about walking into a room that codes you as wrong from the second you open your mouth. Tara Clancy commuted from working-class Queens to a Manhattan college, where a classmate mocked how she said "huge" and a writing professor slipped her a bag of third-grade grammar workbooks. Susan Kent moved to segregated Fitzgerald, Georgia at age six. By high school her closest friend Walt was Black, and when Jen played a Bobby Brown dedication for her from Walt over the local radio, Susan understood he was about to ask her to prom. Fitzgerald had two proms: a whites-only one and a Black one. Kevin Allison sits down with Jeff Barr, RISK!'s longtime editor, for a farewell conversation almost two decades in the making. At its center is a story they've never told on the show: the mushroom trip Kevin took at Jeff's home in Colorado, when what began as a pleasant walk turned into hours of screaming panic, Kevin convinced he was dying and pacing with 911 half-dialed while Jeff pleaded with him not to call and phoned a nurse friend to talk him down. Around that centerpiece, Kevin and Jeff cover Jeff's earliest audio experiments, the invention of the RISK! poo flags, the scat play scene that broke Jeff for a while, and the fan email that led Jeff to an ADHD diagnosis decades into adulthood. Peppered throughout is a highlight reel of the audio silliness Jeff has made over the years. The miles have been cut back drastically, yet we are on the verge of leaving New Hampshire behind and entering Maine. It has been both glorious and difficult, a challenge I expected, yet probably underestimated. Along the way, I was able to chat with Lisa, one of the new owners of the Libby House, Evie, the caretaker at the Imp Tentsite, and Baptist, a foraging SOBO, who shares a few mushroom secrets. Host: Dan Panetti There is a lot of talk about the Good Good golf commercial where a young man shoves a young woman to the ground - is that appropriate, did the culture over-react, how should we think about the relationship of men and women, especially in today's culture where there is so much confusion and controversy about gender? Well, God's Word is a source of light and wisdom on this subject and so we'll examine what God has to say about how men should treat women. In this episode, I referenced a book by Dr. Joe McIlhaney called Hooked - and it's such a valuable and informative book, especially if you're raising a young woman. Here is a link to the book: Hooked: The Brain Science on How Casual Sex Affects Human Development by Dr. Joe McIlhaney and Freda McKissic Bush T4M guys - just a reminder that Training4Manhood is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) ministry and you can make donations either via Zelle (info@training4manhood.com) or by visiting the Training4Manhood website.
The Space Show Presents Leonard David, Sunday, 8-30-26 4583This was a space show discussion hosted by David Livingston with veteran space journalist Leonard David as the main guest, along with several space community members including Marshall Martin, Manuel Cuba, Bill Gowen, John Hunt, Dr. Charles Lurio, Phil Swan, Dr. A.J. Kothari, and Dr. Doug Plata. The conversation centered on the recent launch of NASA's Roman telescope, with Leonard describing it as a significant moment in astronomy that will complement existing observatories like Hubble and James Webb. The discussion also covered Leonard's skepticism about NASA's Artemis program, particularly regarding the transition from Artemis III's lunar orbit mission to a human landing on the moon, with Leonard expressing concerns about technical readiness and the need for proper testing before committing human missions. The conversation touched on China's lunar program delays, SpaceX's Starship development challenges, and broader space policy issues, with participants discussing the gap between scientific discoveries and their incorporation into educational materials for students.David hosted this program with Leonard David as the main guest, discussing recent space developments including the Roman telescope launch. Barbara reported watching the launch early in the morning and praised SpaceX's success, comparing it to the James Webb telescope deployment. The discussion touched on how new astronomical data from instruments like the Roman telescope and James Webb might be more quickly accessible to the public and citizen science groups compared to previous missions, potentially addressing the delay in updating science textbooks with current findings.Leonard expressed skepticism about the current status of NASA's Artemis program, citing concerns about the technical readiness to transition from Earth orbit operations to human lunar landings. She noted that while Artemis II was inspiring, there are missing technical links similar to those proven during Apollo missions, and she emphasized the need to avoid early human fatalities in the program. Leonard also discussed the growing space competition with China and the importance of communicating space exploration to the public in accessible ways beyond technical jargon. The group discussed China's postponement of the Chang'e 7 mission to 2027, with Barbara explaining that timing issues around lunar illumination at the South Pole were the main factor, as the mission required specific lighting conditions for the landing area. Charles clarified that the 18.3-year lunar cycle affects illumination at the South Pole more significantly than at equatorial regions, requiring precise timing rather than simply waiting for the next identical opportunity. The discussion also touched on technical challenges with the relay satellite and landing site conditions, with comparisons made to similar challenges faced by NASA's Artemis program.Leonard also expressed skepticism about current space programs, particularly regarding SpaceX's promises and Elon Musk's leadership style, comparing it to past experiences with the space shuttle program. He shared her concerns about the challenges facing private space companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin, noting that the current space program is significantly different from the Apollo program. Our guest reflected on the past involvement in promoting student payloads for the space shuttle program, where she and colleagues testified before Congress about getting students involved in NASA missions. The group discussed challenges related to lunar exploration, including the complex illumination conditions at the South Pole due to the 18.6-year lunar nodal cycle and the need for continuous computer simulations to map polar sunlight. Leonard highlighted concerns about moonquakes and the importance of gathering more data through additional seismometers before committing to a moon base. The conversation shifted to broader political and financial topics, with David expressing skepticism about government fiscal responsibility and noting that both major political parties contribute to growing national debt, which he believes will have significant impacts on future generations. The group discussed the Artemis program, particularly focusing on the need for unmanned lunar landings before human missions as part of the Artemis IV planning. Leonard expressed skepticism about claims of a cislunar economy, noting that while there are studies and interest from multiple countries including India and China, the sustainability and economic viability of lunar exploration remain uncertain. The discussion also touched on historical space missions, including challenges during Apollo 10 and 11, before being interrupted by David who mentioned a recent Deloitte report on space and the moon.David shared information about a new Deloitte report on the lunar economy, which estimates a potential economic value of $343 billion to $566 billion through 2050. He plans to review the report's assumptions and potentially invite the authors to discuss it on his space show. The group discussed the importance of reviewing economic projections and assumptions in space exploration, with Barbara emphasizing the need for sustained human presence on the moon before considering Mars missions. The group discussed the development status of Starship, particularly focusing on the differences between flights 13 and 14. Charles explained that flight 14 would attempt to catch both the booster and Starship, with the upper stage catch feature being removed recently. The discussion highlighted ongoing challenges with propellant transfer testing and concerns about space debris, with Leonard expressing worry about potential explosions during refueling operations in orbit. Our guest expressed support for the idea of a Space Academy similar to Annapolis or West Point, noting her work on rewriting a Space Career book and conducting interviews with space startups. He highlighted challenges in the space startup industry, including frequent changes in leadership and funding issues, while acknowledging the presence of successful companies in Colorado like Advanced Space and Blue Canyon. The discussion touched on SpaceX's dominance in the industry and its role in launching numerous payloads, including CubeSats, though its future plans with Falcon 9 remain uncertain.Leonard and David discussed public skepticism about UAPs (Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena), noting that recent Pentagon releases and media coverage have increased public interest. Leonard expressed concerns about missing data in Pentagon files and highlighted credible reports from military pilots, while also considering alternative explanations including military testing programs. The conversation touched on historical perspectives on UFOs, including experiences from the 1950s, and mentioned ongoing congressional efforts to protect whistleblowers who come forward with UAP information. The group discussed various topics related to space exploration and UAPs. Barbara shared insights about Mike Gold's work on NASA's UAP study and Bigelow Aerospace's involvement. The conversation then shifted to potential new propulsion technologies, with Leonard mentioning a company called Exodus that is developing innovative space travel solutions. David referred to a podcast interview with Eric Weinstein, who discussed how conventional scientific constraints may limit our understanding of space travel, propulsion, and extraterrestrial life. The conversation ended with a discussion about a new book by Steve Benner that critiques how science handled the Viking data on Mars. The group discussed Eric Weinstein, with Bill describing him as intelligent but having a persecution complex as an outsider to physics, while John Jossy mentioned Weinstein's technical paper on unified field theory. Leonard shared her experience filming with Buzz Aldrin for a new documentary and mentioned an upcoming story about a potentially significant finding on Venus. The conversation concluded with Leonard describing her childhood experience witnessing a black triangle-shaped object, which she believes was a classified U.S. aircraft based on information from Bill Scott, though John Hunt expressed skepticism about the alien origin theory.Special thanks to our sponsors:American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Helix Space in Luxembourg, Celestis Memorial Spaceflights, Astrox Corporation, Dr. Haym Benaroya of Rutgers University, The Space Settlement Progress Blog by John Jossy, The Atlantis Project, and Artless EntertainmentWe use Zoom phone numbers for program participation. For real time program participation, email Dr. Space at: drspace@thespaceshow.com for instructions and access. The Space Show is a non-profit 501C3 through its parent, One Giant Leap Foundation, Inc. Back in May of 2014, RISK! hit Pittsburgh for the first time, and this classic episode brings the whole strange, sharp-edged night home. (Content note: sexual assault) As a counselor at a Pittsburgh women's clinic, Stacy Keene believes she's found her calling, until a frightened teenage patient and an openly hostile doctor put her in the middle of a confrontation she hadn't expected. Then Matt Bower answers a late-night Kmart call from a man who just needs one doorknob delivered to a dark house in the woods, and drives out to meet him. (Content note: child sexual abuse) And Jordan Sargent spends a summer under the spell of a friend's churchgoing father, until the man's stepdaughter's accusation sends Jordan reaching for a jar of coins and a plan he can barely admit to. Gear-up landings are often dismissed as embarrassing pilot mistakes, but landing gear mishaps are far more common, complicated, and expensive than many pilots realize. In this episode, Max talks with Tom Turner of the American Bonanza Society Air Safety Foundation about why gear-up landings and landing gear collapses continue to happen—and the operating habits and maintenance practices that can prevent them. Turner says the Beechcraft Bonanza, Baron, Debonair, and Travel Air fleet averages about one reported landing gear mishap every week. Those events represent roughly 40 percent of the mishaps reported to the American Bonanza Society. And because many landing gear events do not meet NTSB reporting thresholds, Turner says contacts in the insurance, aircraft rebuilding, and salvage industries believe the actual number may be two to three times higher. The problem is not unique to Beechcraft. Turner previously tracked landing gear events across piston retractable-gear aircraft and found comparable or even higher rates in some other types. Landing gear mishaps also have an outsized impact on aircraft insurance because a seemingly survivable gear-up landing can result in propeller damage, an engine teardown, belly damage, and repair costs high enough for an insurer to total the airplane. Much of the conversation focuses on developing habits that make forgetting the landing gear less likely. Turner teaches the concept "gear down to go down." Rather than beginning the final descent simply by reducing power, landing gear extension becomes the event that initiates the descent from traffic pattern altitude or onto the final portion of an instrument approach. He also teaches Gear Extension Altitude, or GEA. On a straight-in or other nonstandard arrival, the pilot selects an altitude below which the airplane will not descend until the landing gear has been extended and confirmed. Max relates two occasions during his flying career when normal landing gear cues broke down. In one, while training in a Diamond DA42, he reached the flare before his instructor revealed that the gear was still up. In another, while flying a Vision Jet instrument approach, the normal glidepath cue used for gear extension never appeared. The airplane's warning system ultimately caught the omission. That leads to one of Turner's strongest recommendations: regardless of when you normally extend the landing gear, establish a deliberate final gear confirmation on short final, around 400 to 500 feet AGL. If distraction, a changed traffic pattern, a go-around, or some other interruption causes you to miss your normal extension cue, that final check provides one more opportunity to catch the error. Warning systems alone are not enough. Turner describes pilots who continued toward landing while gear warning horns sounded and bright warning lights flashed. During high workload, pilots may simply stop processing repetitive warnings. In multi-engine training, the problem can become particularly insidious because pilots may listen to a landing gear warning horn throughout a simulated engine-out exercise and effectively tune it out before landing. Turner recommends using more than cockpit lights to verify the gear. Listen to the gear motor and notice whether it sounds normal. Feel and observe the expected change in drag and pitch. Compare airspeed, power, descent rate, and aircraft performance with what you normally expect. Then verify the cockpit indications. ABS even recommends holding the gear handle until this entire confirmation process is complete. Go-arounds introduce another human-factors trap. Pilots may vividly remember extending the gear—but the memory may be from the previous trip around the pattern. Turner favors making a go-around resemble a normal takeoff, then using the same normal extension cue on the next approach. Whatever technique a pilot chooses, the key is consistency and making sure the cue will still occur following a go-around. The discussion then turns to touch-and-go landings, which both Max and Tom strongly discourage in retractable-gear airplanes. A pilot reaching to retract the flaps can inadvertently select the landing gear instead. They similarly recommend not reconfiguring the airplane during the landing roll. Wait until the airplane is clear of the runway and preferably stopped on the taxiway before moving flap or similar controls. And pilots should not assume squat switches will save them. Turner describes observations showing that systems tied to weight-on-wheels switches may not recognize the airplane as firmly on the ground until surprisingly late in the landing roll—and may switch to flight mode early during takeoff. Bumps and unloading of the landing gear can further reduce their effectiveness. Gear collapses also have a significant maintenance component. At American Bonanza Society maintenance evaluation events, aircraft are placed on jacks and their landing gear rigging and downlock tensions are carefully inspected. Turner says it is not unusual for roughly two airplanes out of a 24-aircraft event to have gear tensions so far out of tolerance that the owners are advised not to fly until adjustments are made. ABS considers improper rigging serious enough that it developed a 38-step landing gear inspection checklist to supplement normal Beechcraft inspection procedures. Finally, Turner discusses what to do when the gear itself malfunctions. If the gear begins to extend and then jams, perhaps popping the motor circuit breaker, repeatedly cycling it may turn a damaged push rod or rod end into a complete failure. Instead, Turner recommends following the airplane's approved manual landing gear extension procedure, which can place less stress on a compromised system and may give the pilot the best chance of getting all the gear down. The episode highlights the American Bonanza Society's Put Your Gear Down campaign, which makes decades of landing gear operating and maintenance information available to pilots of all retractable-gear airplanes. Its goal is simple: replace the familiar saying that there are "those who have and those who will" have a gear mishap with a third category—pilots who use disciplined operating and maintenance practices to make sure it never happens to them. Two New York men take the long way through heartbreak. Brad Lawrence arrives in the city to become an actor while his girlfriend starts Columbia Law School, and their seven-year relationship goes cold almost on contact. Working two jobs and desperately lonely, he builds a nightly ritual of drinking far across town and riding the subway home drunk in the small hours, until one 3 a.m. ride lands him across the car from a woman he's sure he recognizes. Christopher Moncayo-Torres cannot stop walking past his ex's Bushwick duplex after a broken engagement. When he finds a stranger's wallet holding four hundred dollars, returning it becomes a project, and the restaurant where the owner works becomes the setting for a fresh-start fantasy that a pushy stranger at the bar keeps complicating. Philippians 4:10-19 | YOUR Needs Are Not Bigger Than God's SUPPLYYOU have been measuring YOUR need — and it keeps looking bigger than anything that could meet it.That is where the fear lives. YOU add it up. YOU look at what YOU have against what YOU owe, what YOU need against what is coming in, and the gap looks impossible. And the longer YOU stare at the size of the need, the more convinced YOU become that this is the one thing too big for God to cover. But this passage says YOU have been measuring the wrong thing.Philippians 4 ends with one of the most quoted promises in the entire Bible — and one of the most misunderstood.Because most people hear it as a nice sentiment: God will take care of you. But look at what the promise is actually measured against. It does not say God will supply according to the size of YOUR need. It does not say according to what is realistic, or what is left over, or what makes sense on paper. It says according to a completely different measure — a source so vast that the size of YOUR need becomes almost irrelevant next to it.The supply was never tied to the size of YOUR problem. It is tied to the size of His riches. Here is what most people miss. Before that promise is ever given, the person writing it shares a secret he had to learn — a way of living that most people never discover — that allowed him to be completely steady whether he had everything or almost nothing. He was not writing this from a place of abundance. He was writing it having known real lack. And the secret he learned in those seasons is the exact thing that unlocks the promise for YOU.But there is something else — a specific condition surrounding this promise that most people skip right over. This famous promise of supply was not spoken into a vacuum. It was attached to something specific these people had done — a way they had partnered, participated, and given into the mission of God when no one else would. The promise of "all your needs supplied" came directly on the heels of their willingness to be part of what God was doing. And that connection is the key that most people miss entirely when they claim this verse. There is a link in this passage between what YOU pour out and what God pours back — and between the secret of contentment and the promise of supply — that will completely change the way YOU look at both the need in front of YOU and the riches behind it.What was the secret he learned? What is the supply actually measured against? And what is the condition attached to the promise most people quote but never fully receive?Press play — because YOUR needs are not bigger than God's supply. This message will show YOU what the promise is really measured against, and why the source behind it makes YOUR biggest need look small.

Identity Politics: Who Are You? 7/8 Rev. Dr. Katie Hays Who is the Spirit? Paul presents an unsettling (to us) duality between “flesh” and “Spirit” – a somewhat anachronistic, Hellenistic understanding of personhood. Maybe for us, his contrast would be better understood as “impulsive appetites” vs. “considered choices”? Or perhaps “self-pleasing” vs. “other-considering”? In any case, the “fruit of the Spirit” in 5:22-23 deserves our full attention. To tell us your thoughts on this sermon, click through to the web posting and leave us a comment. Host: Dan Panetti Maturing and aging are NOT the same thing. What is the difference? Well, again I found a terrific word picture in Spurgeon's book Flowers from a Puritan's Garden and he explained the difference between distance and duration - and that hit me as a perfect analogy for maturing vs. aging. In maturity, we want to grow in specific measurables…not just get a year older, but grow in wisdom and stature and in favor with God and with man (Luke 2:52). What does maturity really mean and how can we mature as men - that's our conversation for this episode! T4M guys - just a reminder that Training4Manhood is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) ministry and you can make donations either via Zelle (info@training4manhood.com) or by visiting the Training4Manhood website.
Luke 8:1-3 | God Didn't Bring YOU This Far Just to WATCHYOU have been on the receiving end for a long time. God is about to move YOU to the other side of it.YOU know what it is to be helped. YOU have been carried, healed, provided for, rescued more times than YOU can count. And somewhere along the way, without meaning to, YOU settled into the role of the one who receives — watching what God does, grateful for it, but standing on the sidelines of the mission itself. As if YOUR job was to be blessed, and someone else's job was to build. But God did not bring YOU this far just to watch.Luke 8 reveals something about how God works that most people have completely overlooked. There is a detail in this passage that quietly corrects a belief a lot of people hold without ever questioning it. The most powerful ministry that ever walked the earth — one that healed the sick, multiplied food out of nothing, and had the very Son of God at the center of it — was sustained in an ordinary, surprising way. Not by miracles falling from the sky every morning. By people. By ordinary people who had been touched, choosing to give from what they had. Here is what most people miss.God could have provided for that mission any way He wanted. He could have made money appear, made provision fall like rain, removed every need supernaturally. But that is not the pattern He chose. Instead, He moved on the hearts of people whose lives had been changed — and invited them to become part of what He was doing. The very ones who had been healed became the ones who carried the mission forward. What they had received turned them from spectators into partners. And here is the part that will surprise YOU: it was not only about money. Some gave financially. But others gave something else entirely — a home, a meal, a place to stay, an act of service, something practical they already possessed. Across these passages, ordinary people used the ordinary things in their lives — their resources, their homes, their hands, their time — to sustain a move of God. Not one of them did something flashy. But without them, the mission would not have gone forward the way it did. Their part mattered more than they ever knew. That is the truth God wants to settle in YOU. There is a role only YOU can fill in what He is doing right now — and it is built out of exactly what is already in YOUR hands. YOU were not just meant to benefit from the move of God. YOU were meant to be part of it.What was the surprising way the greatest ministry was sustained? What did ordinary people give? And what has God placed in YOUR hands that He is inviting YOU to use for something bigger than YOURSELF?Press play — because God did not bring YOU this far just to watch. This message will show YOU why YOUR part matters, and how the very things already in YOUR life are exactly what God wants to partner with.
WHAT WE COVERProverbs 14 Part 2 begins at verses 15-24 and continues the chapter's central truth:What is inside eventually becomes visible. In this lesson, we examine:How wisdom tests what it hearsWhy confidence is not proof of wisdomHow anger exposes what is governing the spiritHow wisdom treats the poor and the neighborWhy mercy and truth reveal righteous intentionHow labor proves what talk cannotHow fear of Yahuah produces true confidenceHow truth, patience, and righteousness preserve lifeHow personal character eventually affects an entire peopleWHY THIS MESSAGE MATTERSPart 1 showed that wisdom builds and foolishness destroys.Part 2 shows what that looks like in practice.Wisdom governs belief, reaction, relationships, mercy, labor, testimony, leadership, and the inner man.The question is not simply whether we know what is right. The question is whether wisdom governs us deeply enough to become visible in what we do.SCRIPTURE REFERENCESProverbs 14:15-35Proverbs 16:32Proverbs 19:23Proverbs 27:4Deuteronomy 4:5-8Deuteronomy 15:7-11Proverbs 29:2ABOUT AHAVA ~ LOVE ASSEMBLYWe teach the pure Word of Yahuah. No religion. COMFORT WITH A PURPOSE In 2 Corinthians 1:3–4, Paul reminds us that God is the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort—the One who meets us in our pain, strengthens us in our struggles, and carries us through seasons we never thought we would survive. But there is a greater purpose behind that comfort: God comforts us so that we can become a source of comfort to someone else. offering : Zelle: offering@safehousechurchgso Cash app: @safehousechurchgso Paypal: paypal.me/ministryaid

An episode from May 2014 with more comedy than the alliterative title would suggest. Dave Hill wanted to frighten himself on purpose, so he flew to northern Mexico to stay with an old college friend who had become the chaplain of a prison the cartels were running themselves. There is a pizza party, a borrowed guitar, and a man with a machete. (Content note: suicidal ideation, suicide) CJ Hostetter graduated into the 2009 economy, moved back in with their divorcing parents, and stopped feeling anything at all. Then a gunshot went off across the street. Tyler Phillips took a pizza order from a caller who volunteered his full name and street address. The street turned out to be real. In Episode 425 of Aviation News Talk, Max talks with retired Air Force General David Brubaker about STEM Flights, a nonprofit organization that pairs middle- and high-school students with volunteer pilot mentors for free, one-on-one aviation experiences designed to introduce them to careers in aviation, aerospace, engineering, and other STEM fields. STEM Flights grew out of Brubaker's own experience after retiring from the Air Force in 2005. During his military career, he flew aircraft including the F-4 and F-16 and finished his career with an assignment at the Pentagon. After retiring, he became active in general aviation and began taking young people flying. But Brubaker didn't simply give them airplane rides. He expected them to participate. They helped with navigation, looked at the instrumentation, worked with the radios, and often took the controls themselves. Years later, he began hearing back from some of those young people. Several had gone on to study aviation, aerospace, engineering, and other technical subjects. One young woman eventually earned her ratings, joined the West Virginia Air National Guard, and became a C-130 pilot. Those experiences helped Brubaker recognize that pilots could have an enormous influence on the career choices of young people simply by sharing aviation with them in a meaningful way. His children encouraged him to turn what he was doing informally into a nonprofit, and STEM Flights was launched in 2018. Today, STEM Flights connects students with volunteer pilot mentors around the country. Students don't simply show up at an airport for a free ride. They apply to the program, receive a recommendation, select a mission based on their interests, and complete homework before being paired with a pilot. That preparation is part of what makes STEM Flights different. Brubaker describes the program as a more intensive, personal experience than a typical introductory airplane ride. A student is paired one-on-one with a pilot mentor, and the pilot learns about the student's interests before the flight. On the day of the mission, they discuss safety and learning objectives, preflight the airplane, and then head into the air. Once they reach a safe altitude, the student usually gets the controls. They may learn about navigation, aircraft instrumentation and communications, and Brubaker says he likes to have each student make at least one radio call. But the most powerful moment often comes when the student realizes that he or she is actually flying the airplane. Brubaker tells the story of one reluctant young man whose mother encouraged him to participate. On the ground, the student appeared completely uninterested, and Brubaker wondered whether the flight would accomplish anything. Then they took off. Within minutes of taking the controls, the boy came alive. He started participating, asking questions, and enthusiastically flying the airplane. A couple of weeks later, Brubaker received a letter from the boy's mother. She explained that her son had approached life believing it was better not to try than to try and fail. Flying an airplane—something he never imagined he could possibly do—changed his perception of what he might be capable of accomplishing. That experience illustrates why STEM Flights is about more than simply recruiting future pilots. Students have gone on to pursue aircraft maintenance, avionics, aerospace engineering, military aviation, and other technical fields. Brubaker says dozens have attended universities with aviation or engineering programs, and STEM Flights continues supporting students after their flights through a program called Flight Following. Flight Following connects participants with information about scholarships, flight schools, grants, Civil Air Patrol, and other organizations and programs that can help them continue toward aviation and STEM careers. For pilots listening to Aviation News Talk, one of the most important parts of the conversation is how they can participate. STEM Flights calls its volunteers "pilot mentors," and you don't need to be a flight instructor. Brubaker says pilots generally need a private pilot certificate, at least 250 hours of flight time, appropriate medical and aircraft qualifications, and a background check. You don't necessarily need to own an airplane either. Some pilot mentors rent aircraft or belong to flying clubs, and in some areas STEM Flights has arrangements with local flight schools. The organization has pilot mentors in 49 states, but matching students with available pilots remains a constant challenge. At the time of the interview, Brubaker said roughly 115 young people were waiting to be paired with pilots. After a career that included fighter jets, simulated air combat and pulling nine Gs, Brubaker says mentoring young people offers a different kind of satisfaction. Military flying was intensely focused on accomplishing a mission. STEM Flights provides an opportunity to give something back. And for a general aviation pilot wondering how to help strengthen the future of aviation, the concept is remarkably simple. Share your airplane. Share your experience. Put a young person at the controls. And you may help launch an aviation career that otherwise never would have begun. We're not only pushing through New Hampshire, but we've reached the spot where the rubber meets the road; namely, Mt Moosilauke, the first of the 4000-footers that we climb. It was an exhilarating climb, yet one well within my capabilities. Along the way, I chatted with Nuke, my hiking partner who I first interviewed just after Caledonia State Park, in Pennsylvania. I wanted him to give his impressions of Moosilauke and how his flip flop had gone so far. I'm using Polarsteps to record my AT thru-hike this year. Two comedians with two very different things to stop hiding, expose themselves in turn: Calvin S. Cato is queer, twenty pounds lighter than he used to be, and willing to do almost anything to perform for more than three people and a sad disco ball. When a friend suggests the Naked Comedy Show, Calvin signs up on the strength of two words: "sells out." He does not ask a follow-up question. By the time he learns what "naked" actually means, he has already invited his entire art gallery. Uriah Wesman moves to LA to be a one-liner comedian and bottoms out performing in the back of an ice cream shop, where his jokes are so bad they ruin the ice cream. A comedy club GM asks him one simple question about himself, and Uriah casually mentions his parents were in a doomsday cult. Then corrects himself: three cults. Then mentions the kidnapping. Then the sword. Uriah spent years hiding behind a character on stage because if the audience rejected the character, it wouldn't hurt. Putting the real childhood on stage is the risk that actually connects. Be Part of RISK!

We're at last in New Hampshire, and the drama is ramping up, with longer, higher, and more intense climbs. From previous experience, I know that I've only done the easiest section of New Hampshire so far, but I'm ready to embrace Moosilauke by the time we meet next time. one morning, in a shelter on a rainy day, I managed to speak with a young couple out on a thru-hike, Moss Man and Chapstick, while also engaging in conversation with Neighbor and Bellows, a mother and son duo on a section hike.
