Men leading from the front as fathers, husbands, brothers, friends. We look to discuss the disease that is mediocrity and complacency through acts and the motivations and determinations that make great men great.
Alex Cherry is a survivor. Alex is a fighter. Alex has overcome the odds. Alex was/is an addict. His journey to addiction and, ultimately, jail time is one that parents need to hear. This story is one of naivety, blind innocence and then ultimate rock bottom. Alex didn't set out on a path to end up where he did, but he ended up there anyway. He is open and brutally honest about his addiction - how he got there, the moments where he wanted to and attempted to end his own life. Why? A drug got ahold of him that slowly but surely destroyed everything around him. But I can assure you of this - this story, Alex's story, is one that shows the depths to which the human psyche and resolve can reach and come out on the other side. Not only the other side, but stronger, better and bigger than ever before. He has risen up to share his story, not just here, but directly with clients and men all over the country through his work with Default Kings, Reject Mediocrity Podcast and Newsletter and being a continued guest on multiple podcasts throughout. This episode, "Hidden Monsters - A Story of Addiction" is one I'm unbelievably proud to get to be a part of. I'm truly honored that Alex would sit down and take the time to share this with me and those of you listening to Navigating The Intentional Life. One of the most powerful episodes to date. This is the follow up. This is the encore to the original. Boyds story is not made for one part or even 2 for that matter. Yes, there is a large possibility that he and I will have to sit down for a Part 3 on the same "come-up" story. Why? Because many of you are wanting exactly what Boyd is sharing. You disagree? I think in your heart of hearts you know that's not true. You want to be free, you want to attack your life like a crazed, unlimited, unstoppable wild thing. But Boyd isn't crazy - he knows exactly what he is doing. He is calculated and dedicated in ways that the lazy and mediocre will and have always called "obsessive". What you know is that to do anything big, one has to go big. Most are not willing to cross that boundary. Most are not Boyd. We hope you enjoy this second act of the story as much as we enjoyed discussing it. Never mind my mustache, take a listen, subscribe to our channel and share with your friends and family and even that neighbor you can't stand. What does it take to push, really push, your body to its absolute limits? Growing up I was an athlete and played all of the main sports. Later in life I joined the military and met all of the physical requirements for the worlds greatest military. I was even a certified CrossFit "trainer" for a time; but did I really know what it was like to push my body past limits that defy every red flag your body gives you when the limits you've taken it to are being surpassed? Chris Boettcher is a man that knows the answer to this question. He's spent over a decade competing in one of the most grueling competitions the world has to offer. He has done this consistently for over a decade. See, Chris is an Iron Man. Multiple times through. But his podcast was not as much about being a competitor in that competition and more about being a man that stands for his morals, stands for himself, stands for his family and does so with passion, compassion, grace, humility and a quiet dogged determination unlike anything I've ever seen. Chris breaks down his journey that took him from first deciding to compete in Iron Man and how that obsession cost him. He speaks on the revelations that doing so has taught him on fatherhood, being a husband and, overall, how to stand up for his beliefs. Even with the accomplishments, he is not done. Still striding, still working to become the best version of himself for himself, but for those he is in charge of and a family he won't fail to help flourish. Tune in - this is a podcast I felt honored to be able to produce. There are few people in this world that one can meet and instantly know they are something different. The kind of people that, for some reason, you know you respect them instantly - not like - respect. Jerry Adams is one of those men. Jerry is a follower of Christ, Husband, Father, Brother, Leader, Teacher, Coach. He's a country boy - grew up in the country on a small farm, took baths in a creek, learned the value of hard work and telling the truth. Hunting, fishing, backpacking - his heart is in the wild. He's taken his experience as a steel worker, his experiences in the wild to then help shape and grow other men. Through his own walk to his personal group Men Of Grit - he's a man in the arena consistently working to be the best version of himself, consistently building his mind, body and spirit. There isn't a single thing more addictive on this planet than being near someone that is full of heart. People of this nature make those around them want to be better, work harder, love stronger, listen longer, etc. Ian Rush is one of those people. He's all heart. HIs heart is for his family. His heart is for the parents he helps work through their own parenting struggles. He gives his all to making the community around him better by making his home strong first. If you know me or have listened to the podcast long enough you know that I massively enjoy those that can cut loose, drop the f-bomb and still bring levels of thought and intellect in a way that blows my hair back. The story of Ian and how he's gone from being a slave to a company he helped build to "unschooling" his daughter and running his own life on his own terms is phenomenal. Ian is a deep dude; intrinsic and thoughtful with a good dash of bullshittery. Tune in to this one and follow Ian. Learn from him. Subscribe to our show and pass it on. Check Ian out here... One of my favorite things about the people I bring on the podcast is that most have adopted the "I don't give a fuck" mentality to their lives and how they chase it. This is the essence of Navigating The Intentional Life - to be bold, to be daring, to be courageous in ones pursuit of their own version of "quality of life". Don Hickman is no exception. Actually, he is an exception; in comparison this mans "give a damn" button is not just broken, he ripped the fucking thing off completely. He's charged up, he's passionate, he's iron that wants to consistently sharpen other iron when it comes to the men in his communities. He's unapologetic about fitness - no fatties, no dad bods, no excuses. But he's all heart; if you're overweight he wants you trying and that's all he needs from you. If you're married, love your wife - protect her, care for her and make love to her the way a man should. Being a father, well, this is where Don injects speed, steroids, motor oil, kerosene, rocket booster and fucking grenade launchers into his foundation of what makes a father a father. He does "Dads Day" Fridays with other men from his community. They give their wives a night out or just free from kids and the dads play like they're children again as well. Building forts, racing little carts, having nerf gun and water ballon fights and anything else one could imagine through the mind of a child as what FUN would be... Don makes it happen. Take a listen, hear Don out, the man has so much value to provide. He has so much vigor for life, it was an absolute privilege to sit with him and listen to his view on this crazy crazy world. "If I had to punish every blasphemy, I would have no followers...." There are a lot of sayings about unique individuals - those that truly find a way of mastering the art of "not giving a damn". Whilst the reality is, THEY DO, they've mastered the ability to not allow that "people pleasing" mechanism to overrun their wants, needs, desires and ambitions. They, "march to the beat of their own drum...", they are an "odd duck", a "blue diamond"... I could go on. Jayson Duckett took the drum, the duck and the diamond and set them all on fire! There's not another human being that is more, "take it or leave it" than this man. It was these characteristics and the message he's attempting to divulge to the masses that I HAD to have him on NIL. His story is unique. His ideas are brash and can potentially offend, more often than not, offend. HOWEVER, if you were to really listen and also HEAR what he is saying - you'll find a heart that is pure, a mind that is genuine and a spirit that is wild for others to be the best versions of themselves. Jayson, like the Argonauts, is fearless and ready to live life in a capacity that's only for him to answer to. His message is clear. Do not miss what he has to say. Most of us that follow along with this podcast have NO clue what it is to grow up or to live in a 3rd World Country. We can't imagine living in a country where the unemployment rate is at 30%. Murder and crime are expected. But in all of this, the turmoil, apartheid and violence, stands the most breath taking country side, wild life, culture and life style the planet could possibly know. This is where, my dear friend, Redmond Louw has spent almost the entirety of his life. This is where he raises his beautiful family with his two boys and lovely wife, Daniella. Redmond presents his story with a touch that only he can provide; a father that choose substance abuse over his children and was merely a birthday card when it came to presence, to his years traveling through London and the UK where he began his own addiction with substance. His story is that of loss but then founded directly in grace through faith. An awakening that saved his life along with that of his wife's and now his son's that have a father ever so present and consistently challenging himself to push his message and his calling. Listen to Redmond's story. We hope you enjoy. Every man has a calling. Every man has a purpose. Not every man answers that calling and fulfills that purpose. Zac Small is a man that not only has answered the call on multiple levels, he is calling out. Demanding change and to be heard through a voice that fights for family first mentalities, better fathers to their children through peaceful parenting, stronger husbands to their wives through self-growth and accountability and men that will LEAD other men. He does this through his group Fraternity of Excellence, 365 Days to Sobriety and his participation in groups, like mine, The Cigar Room. From the Navy to leading his son's baseball team - Zac has continued to place himself in a position of ever evolving service. These lines of service continue to shift and change in scope and shape, but none-the-less a service necessary that he does not shy away from. Listen, as I have Zac on for the second time, for the second consecutive 4th of July with him on the Navigating The Intentional Life podcast. There are few times we get to engage/work with/call friends people that are LARGER than life! On this episode I've been fortunate enough to share Boyd Myers and his ridiculously, phenomenal story. Boyd is THAT person - living life without boundaries, without policies and utilizing his full agencies to saturate himself with all life has to offer. From powerlifter, body-building gym owner to over weight with a drinking problem - Boyd's story is that of crossroads. It's one of awakening that shook him to the core, as life has a way of doing. Most of us get the call and we don't answer; this is not that story. Boyd is not that story. Often it's heard of people "rising to the occasion" This is also, NOT Boyd's story; instead of rising, Boyd took the occasion by the scruff of it's neck and fucking curb stomped it, flipped it over and gave it a DDT. He not only rose - he reestablished the very expectations of his occasion itself. He will tell you his most important roles are of father and husband - this episode deconstructs how societies “no score” leagues are ripping the fundamental fabric of our societies and with our children. There's nothing like family…. But what if the family is nothing? Life does not guarantee us that “blood is thicker than water” will always hold true. In this latest episode of NIL - Jeremy discusses the value and importance of creating and nurturing the “nucleus family”. From the examples of his father, The Father and the family built where; the last name and blood line have nothing to do with the bond created. Before you listen to this episode we challenge you to do this - next you're out at a restaurant; take a look around and count how many families have their heads into their electronics. Count them. Take note of them. The importance and value of the foundational family to platonic family are broken down in this podcast in ways I couldn't have thought until I spoke with Jeremy Cooley.
There are years in our lives that just stick out more than others for a myriad of reasons. 2021 has been a year of that nature for us here at NIL. Why? For one, this is our birth year - 2021 saw the founding of Navigating The Intentional Life and the rollercoaster of amazing that it's been in its inception. But this isn't about looking back, it's about what this year has done for the next. The intentional actions taken that have already made ‘22 a bigger and brighter year for the boys and me. Listen along - I hope you enjoy this jog back through this past year of massive change for us and grab some inspiration to close out this year strong. This is our first ever New Years Eve podcast…. Enjoy!
