Laci and Matt kick off the Summer of Nolan with a look at Nolan's early career—his feature debut Following (1998) and then his breakout hit Memento (2001). But first, we share our big-picture thoughts on Christopher Nolan: Why is he the world's most popular director? Does he identify too much with J. Robert Oppenheimer? Is he too boring and well-adjusted to make a good subject for a podcast miniseries? Like his hero Steven Spielberg, Nolan didn't attend film school. Instead, he taught himself to make movies by making movies. He self-financed and produced Following a few hours at a time, but it already showed his gifts as a director and the writing and editing styles that would become hallmarks of all his future films. Working on a considerably larger budget, Nolan then made Memento, which became an indie sensation on the late-90s/early-2000s film festival circuit. It then became a surprise hit at the box office and an even bigger success on home video, launching Nolan's storied Hollywood career. 1-Week Rental tells the story of Memento before diving deep into a discussion and analysis of the movie itself. Watch this episode in full on YouTube: https://youtu.be/c5RuE5-Xv1A  Next week (June 19, 2026). The Summer of Nolan continues with Batman Begins (2005)! Episode 303: How Father's Day Began

Warm Thoughts

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 9, 2026 3:25

It is interesting to know that Father's Day, which this year will be celebrated on June 16th, was, ironically, inspired by a Mother's Day sermon. Mrs. John Bruce Dodd, a Spokane Washington artist, is credited with fostering Father's Day. She got the idea while listening to her minister deliver an impassioned sermon on motherhood. Mrs. Dodd's mother had died young, so her father had to raise 6 children alone. As she listened to the minister, praise mothers for the hardship they endured in raising their children and tending to all the family needs. She reflected on her father's sacrifices, and speculated that there must be other fathers whose similar sacrifices went unrecognized. In a letter to the president of the Spokane Ministerial Association, Mrs. Dodd proposed a day to honor fathers. She suggested June 5th, her father's birthday, the association approved the idea, and the Spokane YMCA publicized it. However, the suggested date didn't allow the ministers enough time to prepare sermons, so the celebrated was scheduled for the 3rd Sunday in June. Thursday on June 19th, 1910. Spokane became the 1st city to honor fathers with a special day. A strong push for the National Father's Day came from Harry C. Meek, a president of the Uptown Lions Club of Chicago. Through the lions, or though the lions crowned him the originator of Father's Day, Meek admitted that the idea 1st occurred to him in 1915. 5 years after Mrs. Dodd's suggestion. He suggested it in speeches before several Lions Clubs, and the idea caught on. The following year, President Wilson's participation in Father's Day ceremony by pressing the button in the nation's capital which unfurled the flag in Spokane. Despite this national gesture, many sections of the country did not take part. President Coolidge also showed interest in creating a national day to establish more intimate relations between fathers and their children while in office. And in 1936, the National Father's Day committee was formed in New York City to promote the celebration actively on the national level. It was in 1957 that Senator Margaret Chase Smith stated that the official recognition of Mother's Day required that Father's Day receive the same honor. She stated that, “Congress has been guilty now for 40 years of the worst possible oversight, to say the least, perpetuated against the gallant of fathers, young and old of our land,” she said in her proposal. It was in 1972, the long wait for a national recognition came to an end when President Nixon signed the congressional resolution giving Father's Day the same status as Mother's Day. And so, now we know the rest of the story about Father's Day. Celebrate Father's Day, 2002. Warm Thoughts from the Little Home on the Prairie Over a Cup of Tea Written by Dr. Luetta G Werner. Happy Mindful Monday Everyone! In this week's episode, our host Allie Brooke sits down with Katarzyna (Kasia) Dodd. She  is a European-licensed psychologist, therapist, and author who is completely shifting how we approach subconscious healing. She is the developer of the Inner Parent Theory—a powerful and necessary missing piece of the traditional Inner Child framework —which she explores deeply in her book, You Are the Dream of the Universe. As a true pioneer in somatic and energy work, Katarzyna introduced Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) to Poland and created the Inherence® Process, a dedicated method for restoring an unshakeable connection with your deepest Self. Born in Kraków, she spent 22 years in the United States before relocating to the Indian Ocean coast of Africa, bringing a highly global and expansive perspective to her practice. Her newest book, The Chameleon's Game, exposes the hidden psychological traps of covert narcissism. In this episode, she breaks down those draining dynamics and provides a clear, actionable roadmap for reclaiming your self-trust, personal clarity, and peace.   In this episode, they discuss; Rebuilding from the Ground Up: The vital first step to constructing a supportive, protective "Inner Parent" immediately following a relationship that shattered self-worth. Embodiment vs. Intellectualizing Healing: Why logically understanding toxic dynamics isn't enough to heal, and how the Inherence® Process bridges that gap to restore connection with the "deep Self." Real-Time Nervous System Regulation: Navigating sudden triggers, fear, or intrusive memories using immediate somatic tools (like EFT and meditation) rather than defaulting to old subconscious safety mechanisms. The Anatomy of a Grounded Boundary: The critical energetic difference between setting a boundary fueled by reactive fear and anger versus one anchored by a calm, empowered Inner Parent. Their conversation naturally broadens to the financial realities of modern college athletics, acknowledging that while educational degrees matter, market value and compensation are the true driving forces for today's athletes. Furthermore, they evaluate the Protect College Sports Act and how legislative efforts are attempting to navigate player pay in an era dominated by the transfer portal and unprecedented roster turnover. The discussion then transitions to the immense expectations placed on high-profile programs and individual players, specifically the unmatched hype surrounding Texas quarterback Arch Manning. COACH IS JOINED BY Dennis Dodd and Tony Barnhart to discuss the increasingly chaotic off-field landscape of college football, even as the on-field product remains as highly entertaining as ever. The trio dives into the current lack of formal employment and collective bargaining for athletes, noting that players are effectively playing for pay through Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) endorsements. Dodd warns that any attempts to cap or cut this compensation could spark player strikes, pointing to past athlete protests at schools like Missouri, Michigan, and Penn State as definitive proof of their leverage. The group also breaks down the proposed Protect College Sports Act, describing the legislation as potentially hostile to the powerhouses in the SEC and Big Ten, while highlighting the heavy political pushback and scheduling hurdles it currently faces in Congress. The conversation then pivots to the College Football Hall of Fame and the controversial exclusion of the late Mike Leach. Dodd criticizes the Hall's rigid requirement of a .600 career winning percentage—a strict rule allegedly championed by former Yankees owner George Steinbrenner—which Leach narrowly missed with a .594, despite his undeniable and transformative impact on the game. The guests argue that this mandate arbitrarily blocks profoundly influential figures from receiving their proper recognition. The segment concludes on a humorous and candid note when Barnhart formally recuses himself from the Mike Leach debate, revealing his active role on the committee that handles Hall of Fame decisions, before cheerfully signing off from the broadcast.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A profound exploration of the historical significance of college football stadiums, this episode delves into the remarkable stories of three iconic venues and their namesakes. Each stadium is not merely a structure of brick and mortar but rather a monument to individuals who have transcended the realm of sports to become legends in their own right. The discussion begins with Michi Stadium, named in honor of Dennis Michi, a pioneering figure who laid the groundwork for the Army football program. Michi's unwavering determination in the face of institutional skepticism regarding the sport culminated in the establishment of a program that would foster camaraderie and resilience among cadets. His untimely sacrifice during the Spanish-American War immortalized him in West Point lore, ensuring that his legacy would forever resonate within the walls of Michi Stadium. The discourse then transitions to the illustrious Nile Kinnick Stadium at the University of Iowa. Kinnick was not only a Heisman Trophy winner but also a heroic fighter pilot whose life was tragically cut short during World War II. The narrative recounts how the student body, in a heartfelt tribute to Kinnick's contributions to both football and the military, voted to honor him through the renaming of the stadium. This act of remembrance underscores the deep connection between sports and national pride, encapsulating the essence of Kinnick's legacy, which continues to inspire generations of athletes and students alike. Lastly, the episode pays homage to Bobby Dodd Stadium at Georgia Tech, a venue that serves as a testament to Dodd's revolutionary approach to coaching. Dodd's philosophy emphasized the enjoyment of the game, contrasting sharply with the militaristic training prevalent during his time. His commitment to player welfare and innovative strategies led to a remarkable record and an enduring legacy that transformed the landscape of college football. Each of these stadiums is a living tribute to the indelible impact of these remarkable individuals, whose stories continue to inspire and shape the ethos of American football. Through these narratives, we gain a deeper understanding of the rich tapestry of college football history, celebrating the men who have made it possible.

Coach is joined by Dennis Dodd to analyze the rapidly evolving and increasingly divided landscape of college athletics, specifically focusing on the financial dominance of the Big Ten and SEC. Dodd explains how recent proposals, like a 24-team playoff, have exposed deep fractures between conferences, with the Big 12 and ACC pushing for the expansion while the SEC and Big Ten resist it. The discussion also covers the severe undervaluation of college sports media rights, noting that keeping broadcasts restricted to individual conference silos drastically diminishes their potential market value compared to pooling them. This growing instability has led prominent figures like Texas Tech's Cody Campbell to heavily lobby for federal intervention to save and regulate college athletics. A major focal point of the conversation is the bipartisan Cruz-Cantwell bill, which attempts to stabilize the industry by granting the NCAA a narrow antitrust exemption, capping compensation, and strictly regulating player transfers. Despite its ambitious goals, Dodd expresses strong skepticism about the bill's viability, suggesting it is highly unlikely to pass in its current form due to upcoming Congressional recesses and widespread reluctance to intervene. To conclude, Dodd outlines five possible paths forward for the future of the sport: federal legislative codification, self-governance led by the powerhouse conferences, corporate spin-offs where schools form separate LLCs for athletics, formal collective bargaining for players, or simply maintaining a status quo defined by endless litigation.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Coach welcomes NFL game analyst Charles Davis to unpack the legal and collegiate fallout surrounding Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby and his recent gambling allegations. The duo juxtaposes the modern era of college sports—where universities and networks profit directly from gambling partnerships—against the strict bans historically placed on student-athletes. They map out Sorsby's expected legal defense strategy, which could heavily leverage the NCAA's own gambling revenue ties and a focus on mental health, while tackling the immense challenges this poses for administrators, potential court-ordered injunctions, and the way high-value NIL contracts are disrupting mid-contract transfers. The gridiron breakdown continues as college football writer Dennis Dodd joins the show to evaluate the bounce-back potential of former national championship programs. Coach and Dodd dive deep into the current trajectories of Lincoln Riley’s USC, Mike Norvell’s Florida State, and Dabo Swinney’s Clemson, weighing each program's unique recruiting triumphs and critical turn-around pressures. The conversation shifts into a rapid-fire analysis of the latest high-profile coaching carousel moves, assessing Matt Campbell’s transition to Penn State, James Franklin’s arrival at Virginia Tech, and Kyle Whittingham taking the reins at Michigan, alongside a snapshot of recent developments reshaping the Big 12. Dennis Dodd and Tony Barnhart team up with Coach on Football Saturday, opening with a reflection on Memorial Day weekend before shifting focus to the highly consequential SEC spring meetings in Destin. The panel breaks down whether these meetings will rival the historic 1991 expansion in long-term impact, especially if they chart a course toward a 24-team playoff system. Highlighting key insights on influential figures like Georgia President Jerry Morehead and SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey, they examine Morehead's comments on SEC self-governance and potential breakaway from the NCAA. The episode closes with a breakdown of Sankey's methodical data-driven approach to a nine-game conference schedule, a look at Coach Ed Orgeron’s rumored return to the LSU sidelines, and breaking news regarding an active NCAA tampering investigation into Ole Miss stemming from a complaint by Clemson's Dabo Swinney against Pete Golding.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this jam-packed episode, Coach is joined by CBS Sports national college football writer Dennis Dodd and analyst Charles Davis to deliver an insider look at the seismic operational, legislative, and coaching shifts rewriting the college sports landscape. The show kicks off with a deep dive into contrasting transfer portal philosophies—pitting Oklahoma State’s massive 80-plus player roster overhaul against Georgia’s selective, high-school-first approach—before Dodd breaks down a pending bipartisan congressional bill that could introduce strict federal oversight and a hard spending cap on athletic rosters. Coach explores how unprecedented financial investments have turned modern athletic facilities into self-contained living spaces to maximize player retention, while also addressing the normalization of coaches using non-traditional media platforms and the urgent need for comprehensive gambling education amid recent player controversies. After lamenting the loss of historic intra-conference rivalries and analyzing how all 16 SEC programs are strategically utilizing the transfer portal, the discussion shifts to a fascinating wave of high-profile coaching resets. The guys analyze Matt Campbell taking the reins at Penn State to replace James Franklin, the unique mechanics behind Michigan landing Kyle Whittingham from Utah, Alex Golesh’s explosive offensive fit at Auburn, and John Sumrall’s high-ceiling jump from Tulane to Florida. Finally, the segment wraps up with a sharp critique of the newly expanded 76-team NCAA men's basketball tournament and a definitive ranking of three powerhouse programs looking to bounce back under current leadership, detailing USC’s physical improvements in the trenches, Dabo Swinney finally embracing NIL and the portal at Clemson, and lingering skepticism surrounding Mike Norvell's Florida State squad.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Episode 224: Community Health Workers Dr. Arreaza: Today we will discuss a topic that, frankly, every single person listening, whether you're a medical student, a resident, a nurse, a family doctor, or any primary care provider, needs to really understand. We're talking about community health workers (CHWs). We are joined by our stellar medical student; you may be familiar with her voice from previous episodes about insomnia. Moira, welcome, please introduce yourself.  Moira: I want to be upfront about why Community Health Workers matter to you specifically. If you've ever felt frustrated that your patient with uncontrolled diabetes keeps missing appointments because they can't get a ride, or that your heart failure patient was readmitted because nobody checked whether they could afford their medications, then you already understand the problem that CHWs are designed to solve. Dr. Arreaza: We're going to give you the definition of a CHW, the evidence behind their effectiveness, how they fit into your care team, the return on investment, and practical steps for integrating them into your practice. We have pulled information from a lot of peer-reviewed sources, and we want to share them with you. So, Moira, let's start with the basics. What exactly is a community health worker? Moira: Great question, and it's one that even literature struggles with, because there are so many titles for this role. Community Health Worker is an umbrella term that encompasses more than 20 different titles including outreach workers, promotores or promotoras de salud, community health representatives, lay health workers, peer educators, patient navigators, and many more. The American Public Health Association defines CHWs as frontline public health workers who are trusted members of or have an unusually close understanding of the communities they serve. Arreaza: And that trust is so important in health care. CHWs are not physicians. They are not nurses. They do not diagnose or prescribe. But they are like a bridge connecting the medical environment, social services, and the community to reduce gaps in healthcare delivery.  Moira: Exactly. In the United States, the role was formally recognized in the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, which includes several sections highlighting the key roles CHWs play in achieving important goals of healthcare. ________________ References:  Aguerrebere, M., Rodríguez-Cuevas, F. It reveals the continuing witness to how a story can affect us when we hear something that seems to “break through the reality of tragedy” and we find that “hope” is what we cannot escape.   We hope for something that pierces darkness, destruction, despair and death.   God's Greatness God has conquered and continues to conquer all four forces that have come against His light, creative nature, hope, and life itself.  His light pierces darkness. His creative nature steps into destruction. His unyielding presence defeats despair. His resurrection power conquers death.   The Deceiver cannot conquer God's goodness, love, power and presence in our lives.    Jesus calls us to him as the Shepherd and we the sheep who cannot live without the Good Shepherd: I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. He will come in and go out, and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy' I hve come that they may have life, and it to the full. Episode #529: Daniel Dodd is one of the two center teachers at Dhamma Patapa, a Vipassana meditation center in Georgia in the tradition of S.N. Goenka. Alongside his work as a meditation practitioner and teacher, he has built a career in community organizing, nonprofit leadership, and federal service focused on low-income communities. But it has not been an easy journey. Dodd was born in Brazil to a Colombian mother and an American father. The family later moved to the United States, and much of his childhood unfolded in rural Maine after his parents separated. His mother raised three children on a homestead without plumbing, where daily life required endurance and adaptability. His adolescence and early adulthood were marked by confusion and drift: He struggled in school, barely graduating, and began drinking and smoking marijuana, uncertain about his future, an angry and agitated young man. A period teaching English in Bogotá during Colombia's violent drug-war years broadened his outlook but did not resolve deeper internal struggles. After a painful breakup left him feeling unmoored, he took a ten-day Vipassana retreat. The experience proved transformative, and meditation gradually became the organizing center of his life. Rather than turning away from society, the practice deepened his awareness of suffering's personal and social dimensions. That perspective guided his later work organizing low-income communities and eventually serving at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. For Dodd, meditation does not remove concern about injustice; it changes how that concern is carried. As he reflects near the end of the conversation, “We're all kind of trying to figure these things out and become better people as we're sitting and living our lives.”

You remember them, and can recall life together if you ever meet again.   You have friends if you are available in heart to have them.   Ultimately, a friend is a person who desires your good. Collaboration, whether it's between young people in a classroom or between institutions across an educational ecosystem, is often seen as an unquestioned virtue. An assumed aspect of people simply working together on a shared purpose, but without much thought given to how it happens in meaningful and deep ways to generate genuinely expanded possibilities for everyone. Rose A. Dodd and her team at The Education Collaborative have been showing how this is done at a massive scale across Africa, for the last decade. Rose joined me this week to share what she and her network have been learning about how deep radical collaboration can really shift and transform systems across a whole continent. Rose is a strategic leader mobilizing Africa's higher education sector at a critical moment, when the continent's youth population is rapidly growing, yet tertiary enrolment remains the lowest in the world. As Executive Director of The Education Collaborative, a pan-African initiative launched by Ashesi University in 2017, Rose leads a peer-driven network that has engaged over 400 institutions across the continent. Under her leadership, the Collaborative is driving transformation in teaching, institutional practices, and graduate outcomes—impacting hundreds of thousands of students, with a goal to reach one million by 2030.With deep expertise in strategy and stakeholder alignment, she develops scalable models for institutional collaboration and system-wide improvement. Rose is driven by a commitment to social innovation and is shaping the future of African higher education by building the systems, networks, and models that enable institutions to lead transformative change at scale.About The Education Collaborative: The Education Collaborative spearheads a collective engagement model that promises to transform higher education outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa. This initiative uses a network approach to build trust and foster collective commitments among higher education leaders and stakeholders to generate sustainable results within the systems they govern and influence. Central to this pioneering movement is a membership model that promotes open engagement, sharing, and community accountability among participating institutions.Website: https://educationcollab.ashesi.edu.ghGiving Voice to Values Africa: https://educationcollab.ashesi.edu.gh/ehub/ecourse/giving-voice-to-values-africaRead our latest Impact Stories Publication: https://educationcollab.ashesi.edu.gh/impact-stories-publication-issue-2LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/the-education-collaborative-networkYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@theeducationcollaborativeReach us via email: education.collaborative@ashesi.edu.gh

We are born to “look for who is looking for us.”    In the Voice of the Heart, which came out years before neuroscience research validated Dr Dodd's work, he writes that we are created by God to seek life to the full, but we can only find that fulfillment in relationship with ourselves (head and heart connected), with other, and with God.    Relational fulfillment is a dictate of our emotional and spiritual genetics. This genetic makeup is so powerful that we will seek a sense of connection that relationship brings in legitimate forms or in illegitimate ways as other episodes have explained, like the recent Addiction Series, Episodes 97-110.   So much of life is about the benefits of relational fulfillment that even the word share means that you receive from others initially, so that you can offer the gifts you have to others—whether that be the flowers you have grown; the experiences you have had; or the love you have received.   We cannot give what we do not have; therefore, we must be open to all that relational fulfillment can offer us, so that we have much to offer others.    Research has shown that gratitude for receiving allows a person to increase their sense of gratitude by giving.   There exists a “child-like” willingness that a person must have to live fully, because relational fulfillment with another person requires that we be: Truthful enough to be trustworthy. Teachable enough to learn how to care well. Humble enough to be open to being relational. Brave enough to face our needs.   Click here to continue reading the episode highlights.

What if the most dangerous season in your ministry is when everything looks like it's going well? Jimmy Dodd talks about the quiet drift that can happen beneath the surface and how to respond before it leads somewhere you never intended. In this episode of FrontStage BackStage, Jason Daye sits down with Jimmy Dodd, founder of PastorServe, to explore a reality many pastors experience but rarely name. There are seasons in ministry when things appear to be working. The church is moving forward. People are engaged. From the outside, it looks like health.Yet beneath the surface, something can begin to shift.Jimmy shares from years of walking closely with pastors, along with his own story, to talk about how drift does not usually happen all at once. It forms slowly, often hidden beneath effectiveness and reinforced by responsibility, affirmation, and the steady demands of ministry life. Because things still seem to be working, the deeper questions often go unasked. This conversation invites a different kind of awareness. It is an invitation to pay attention to what is happening within, not just what is visible around you. It also reframes those moments when something feels off. Rather than ignoring them, they can become meaningful points of reflection and realignment. They discussed:How ministry success can quietly cover over personal driftWhy pastors often miss what is happening beneath the surfaceThe subtle signs that something deeper may be shiftingHow responsibility and affirmation can reinforce unhealthy patternsWhy moments of awareness can lead to realignment and renewed healthThis episode will resonate with pastors and ministry leaders who sense that something is not quite right beneath the surface. It offers space to reflect, to be honest, and to take a step toward greater alignment, health, and dependence on Christ.Looking to dig more deeply into this topic and conversation? FrontStage BackStage is much more than another church leadership show, it is a complete resource to help you and your ministry leaders grow. Every week we go the extra mile and create a free toolkit so you and your ministry team can dive deeper into the topic that is discussed.Visit http://PastorServe.org/network to find the Weekly Toolkit, including the Ministry Leaders Growth Guide. Forklift Systems Football Saturday with Coach Doug Mathews

CBS Sports senior writer Dennis Dodd joins Coach to discuss the tectonic shifts in college football, specifically focusing on the financial and structural future of the NCAA. Dodd highlights the significant impact of the House v. NCAA settlement, noting that the association is facing billions in back-pay damages, which could potentially bankrupt the organization and lead to a model where schools directly pay athletes. The conversation explores the increasing influence of the Big Ten and SEC, with Dodd suggesting that these "super-conferences" are moving toward a private equity-backed model or a separate "super league" to consolidate power and revenue. Matthews and Dodd also touch upon the challenges of the transfer portal and NIL, mentioning how players like Mendoza (who moved from Cal to Indiana) exemplify the new era of player mobility. Finally, the segment reflects on the pressure facing coaches to adapt to this "pay-for-play" reality, where traditional amateurism has been replaced by a professionalized system requiring sophisticated financial management at the university level.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

THE AGENCY BRIEF Agency Update THE HOOK (COLD OPEN) “If you've ever wondered when the federal government decided your constitutional rights needed a permission slip and a background check, welcome to the Gun Control Act of 1968.” THE INTEL (THE STORY) Why?: The 1960s were a mess of race riots, civil unrest, and high-profile assassinations (JFK, MLK, RFK). The political elite used the national panic to ram through a wishlist of federal gun control they had wanted for decades, convincing the public that the legal supply chain was the enemy, rather than the radicals pulling the triggers. The Play-by-Play: What it did: Backroom Deals: Domestic gun manufacturers essentially sold out the people. They backed the bill because it banned the import of cheap, foreign-made handguns—effectively wiping out their competition. The Media Lie: The press sold the GCA as a “targeted” bill to stop assassins. They completely ignored that it effectively criminalized the interstate market, invented the “prohibited persons” list, and choked off the legal supply chain for everyday citizens. The Reality Check (Hidden Incentives): Rumors: Rumor (Highly Credible): Senator Thomas Dodd explicitly modeled the 1968 GCA after Nazi Germany's 1938 Weapons Law. Dodd was a prosecutor at the Nuremberg Trials and public records confirm he had the Library of Congress translate the Nazi law. The structural parallels involving dealer licensing, tracking, and “sporting” clauses are nearly identical. Rumor: LBJ's push for the law was heavily influenced by elite, backroom fears of armed Black Panther patrols in California, rather than just the high-profile assassinations. Gun control is in fact rooted in racism. THE 2A ANGLE (LEGAL & IMPACT) The Threat: The GCA is the mother-ship of modern federal gun control. It created the Federal Firearms License (FFL) system, age restrictions, and the “prohibited persons” list. The ATF's current “zero tolerance” strategy of revoking licenses for misspelled words is entirely dependent on the FFL chokepoint created right here in '68. Bruen Test: Regulatory Creep: Pattern 1: Regulate the seller instead of banning the buyer (creating the FFL dependency). Pattern 2: Exploit intentionally vague language (like “engaged in the business”) so unelected bureaucrats can expand the law later without a Congressional vote. Pattern 3: Frame rights restrictions as “regulating interstate commerce” to bypass the Constitution. Pattern 4: Build the architecture of a registry quietly through compliance paperwork (Form 4473). THE TALKING POINTS (ON-AIR READY) WLS IS LIFESTYLE GFEN's Gun Maker's Match GMM is an annual DIY gun competition event that is the first official shooting competition exclusively for individuals who make their own guns. Multiple stage events are conducted for both Kit Built and 3D Printed guns in Pistol, PCC, and Rifle Divisions, with a special side match for .22lr 3D Printed Firearms. These are designed for 3D printing with some watertight and parametric features, but no detailed mechanical specs beyond compatibility are provided. GOING BALLISTIC National Rifle Association v. NRA Foundation Lawsuit (Washington, D.C.) The NRA Foundation faces ongoing transparency issues in a lawsuit filed by the National Rifle Association alleging illegal trademark use and failure to distribute funds. The Washington, D.C. Attorney General's office mediated the dispute but efforts failed, leading to a FOIA request (R005465-030626) for leadership details. The Foundation provided its 2024 Form 990 but refuses to disclose current trustees, officers, or salaries until the 2025 filing on November 15, 2026. New York Proposed Bills Reclassify BB Guns and Air Guns as Imitation Firearms (Savage) New York lawmakers have introduced bills in both the Assembly and Senate to reclassify airguns, BB rifles, and pellet guns as imitation firearms, requiring barrel plugs and toy-like coloration that would render them non-functional for firing projectiles. This aims to prevent police shootings involving realistic-looking airguns mistaken for real firearms. Paintball guns are exempted but face a raised purchase age from 16 to 18, while manufacturers would be deemed firearms industry members subject to public nuisance lawsuits. Colorado SB 26-043: Firearm Barrel Background Checks (Savage) Colorado Senate Bill 26-043 requires background checks, dealer transfers, and five-year recordkeeping for sales or transfers of firearm barrels, treating them like complete firearms. Non-serialized barrels must be serialized, with penalties including up to 30 days in jail and $500 fine for first-offense violations. The bill targets ghost guns but imposes compliance on all law-abiding gun owners in Colorado. Virginia HB40: Spanberger Signs Ghost Gun Ban (Savage) Virginia Governor Spanberger signed HB40, banning the manufacture, transfer, sale, importation, and eventual possession of unserialized firearms and unfinished frames or receivers in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The law establishes a serialization process for federal firearms licensees but includes no grandfather clause. Most provisions take effect January 1, 2027, with the possession ban effective July 1, 2027.0 OCC and FDIC Final Rule Prohibiting Discrimination Against Firearm Companies (Savage) The OCC and FDIC have issued a new Final Rule that prohibits banking regulators from using ‘reputational risk' as a basis for supervisory actions against institutions serving the firearm and ammunition industry. This rule ends the practice of debanking lawful gun businesses by barring adverse actions based on political, social, or constitutionally protected activities. The National Shooting Sports Foundation praised it as a significant victory under the Trump administration. FPC Statement on Trump Administration's Decision to Support Biden ATF ‘Frame or Receiver' Rule (Savage) Firearms Policy Coalition (FPC) issued a statement criticizing the Trump Administration for maintaining the Biden-era ATF ‘Frame or Receiver' rule after the U.S. Supreme Court upheld it in March 2025. Despite FPC providing a proposed alternative rule in May 2025 and numerous other recommendations, the Administration informed FPC it would preserve the existing definition of firearm ‘frame' and ‘receiver'. FPC accuses the Administration of actively working against Second Amendment rights rather than protecting them. OCC and FDIC Final Rule Prohibiting Reputational Risk-Based Debanking of Firearm Industry The OCC and FDIC issued a final rule that eliminates ‘reputational risk' as a basis for supervisory actions against banks, directly addressing debanking of lawful firearm and ammunition businesses. This change prohibits regulators from encouraging account closures based on political or social views, promoting objective banking supervision. The rule responds to prior findings of inappropriate distinctions against gun-related companies by FDIC-insured institutions. Virginia Proposed Assault Weapons Ban: Gun Store Sales Surge in Henrico County Gun sales in Virginia have surged dramatically as residents rush to purchase firearms ahead of a proposed state ‘assault weapons' ban set to prohibit AR-15 possession after July 1, 2026, unless owned prior. Background checks rose from 47,069 in March 2025 to 79,

Who do I love, and how vulnerably do I love? Am I emotionally and spiritually genuine with God and a few others? Do I use my mind to articulate the truths of my own heart? Can I seek forgiveness, offer mercy, and forgive?   Christianity is truly a religion of growth. Jesus said, “The thief come only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” (John 10:10, NIV)   Christianity is a religion of living fully. This is unlike other religions in the world: Jesus refers to Himself as a “Good Shepherd” in John 10.  Jesus will lead us and grow us into becoming shepherds, ourselves.  Through Jesus we give our hands, heads, and hearts to a “mission” that is worth whatever is required to live fully.  Through the Spirit of God that indwells Christians, we can live fully through loving fully and leading well. This life leaves plenty of fruit behind.   Relationship with one's self refers to the connection between the “heart” and “head.”    Sadly, many of us are taught to defend ourselves rather than become ourselves.    We use our thinking and reactions to hide the truth of our feelings, needs, desire, longings, and hope, rather than use the development of our minds to identify, explore, and express “truth in the inner parts . . . wisdom in the inmost place,” (Psalm 51:6, NIV)   We are created to live fully, but to do so, we must feed the roots, so that the fruits can grow in abundance.  Click here to continue reading the episode highlights.

Recovery is not a quick fix  >  Recovery is a lifestyle, lived one day at a time.   Recovery allows us to live with a “new set of glasses.”   People in recovery no longer see life through the “tinted glasses” that denial gives them, but they begin to live in clear reality.   A person no longer sees life through the “foggy” glasses of denial, but a person begins to live in reality.   While recovery has thousands upon thousands of personal benefits, the personal benefits do not mean that you're the loved ones will change along with you, join you, or even be willing to participate with you. This reality is called resistance to change.   Resistant to change can be in the “main person” who has a clear and primary addiction, or it can be in the “co-addict,” or the one who has enabled, adjusted to, joined in, or “put up with” the primary addiction.    The condition of a “co-addict” is addressed in the Codependency Episodes, 32-44.   The question becomes, “How do I do relationship with someone who doesn't want to join me in this new way of living?”    Recovery From addiction processes and recovery OF who I am created to be is a genuine form of authentic life, without running from one's own heart.    Resistance to change, then, is a heart problem.   Addiction in and of itself is rooted in denial, which requires that the status quo becomes the primary focus in relational life, not the capacity to adjust to change.   Acceptance of and willingness to change requires the ability to “deny” denial. Addiction is founded in denial. Change is founded on “denying” denial.

This clear reality contains a new hope that is the soil out of which the ability to live will fully grow.    Recovery provides so much more than abstinence FROM what was harmful. It allows a person to get recovery OF.   Not only does admission of powerlessness (The First Step, episode #106) open the door to recovery, it “admits” a person onto the path of healing and liberation. Admission is an entrance. The healing is in the “connection rupture” from childhood development that blocks the empowerment of dependency resilience. The liberation is in reclaiming the Six Freedoms (Free Resource at chipdodd.com).   There are three steps to begin recovery. The first three steps, however, are just the beginning.  We admit we were powerless over __________ (addiction) and that our lives have become unmanageable. We came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity. We make a decision to turn our lives and will over to the care of God as we understand Him. These three steps are from the 12-Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous, and yet they apply to all addiction and recovery. The primary addiction of all people addicted is control addiction.   Basically, a person who lives in recovery recommits to these three steps every morning for the rest of his/her life.    Here are the first three steps in a nutshell: I can't He can I will let Him.   Click here to continue reading episode highlights.

Are we trying to carry responsibilities God never asked us to hold?In this conversation with Jimmy Dodd, we explore the tension many of us live with every day—the pull between urgency and surrender, responsibility and trust. We talk honestly about the hidden gap between our “front stage” and “backstage” lives, why isolation quietly destroys leaders and families, and the six relationships every person needs to thrive.Together, we unpack what it looks like to build real friendships that include truth-tellers, why spiritual intimacy matters more than simple accountability, and how God often guides our days through interruptions we didn't plan. We also wrestle with a practical question many of us face: how do we stay faithful to what's in front of us without carrying the weight of outcomes that only God controls? This conversation is a refreshing reminder that we were never meant to do life alone—and that the path to lasting faithfulness is found in humility, trusted relationships, and daily dependence on the Spirit.Support the show
