Drawing from more than 20 years of comprehensive cosmetic dentistry, Dr. Eshom reveals why extraoral photography—not intraoral cameras, not radiographs—is the single most effective tool for building trust and helping patients clearly see the value of comprehensive care. Together, they break down a step-by-step new patient workflow that seamlessly blends diagnostics with psychology, showing how simple point-and-shoot photography placed at the beginning of the exam can elevate patient engagement, differentiate your practice, and eliminate the pressure-based communication styles that leave patients feeling skeptical or overwhelmed. Dr. Eshom explains how co-diagnosis—rooted in permission-based dialogue and visual storytelling—helps patients recognize their own conditions, understand consequences, and ask for solutions rather than being sold to. This episode dives into: The most overlooked use of photography in dentistry: real-time conversation with the patient How to structure a new patient visit that fosters trust, clarity, and long-term case acceptance Why facially generated treatment planning is so effective—especially for patients who "never knew" what their smile looked like Communication strategies that shift patients from an "insurance model" to a value-driven mindset How simplifying photography (yes, even with an iPhone or point-and-shoot) makes comprehensive exams dramatically more effective What to say—and not say—when presenting conditions to avoid making patients feel judged or pressured How this method empowered Dr. Eshom to build a fully fee-for-service practice and drop every insurance plan This conversation is practical, strategic, and deeply grounded in human psychology. If you want a proven communication system that elevates your new patient experience, improves case acceptance, and builds lifelong patient trust—all without feeling salesy—this episode will reshape how you practice.

1/4. The Genesis of the Asteroid Hunter Mission and Early Rejections — Dante Lauretta — Lauretta, hired by mentor Mike Drake at the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory (LPL), initiated the asteroid sample return mission concept in 2004 following a pivotal meeting with Lockheed Martin's Steve Price. The team submitted its initial proposal to NASA in July 2004, which received the agency's lowest competitive ranking, designated Category 4. A subsequent refined mission proposal targeting asteroid 1999 RQ36 was formally rejected in December 2007 due to prohibitively high estimated costs relative to the NASA planetary science program budget allocation. 1930
6/8. The Great Slaughter: Audubon's Regret and the Lewis and Clark Grizzly Massacre — Dan Flores — The opening of the American West initiated an unprecedented destruction of animal populations. Flores documents that John James Audubon, while initially killing wildlife subjects for his ornithological artwork, eventually expressed profound regret regarding the systematic destruction of mammals including buffalo herds. Flores notes that the Lewis and Clark Expedition mirrored prevailing colonial attitudes; Meriwether Lewis permitted subordinates to transform grizzly bearhunting into recreational sport, resulting in at least half of the 37 encountered bears being killed without apparent practical justification, representing callous wastage of irreplaceable fauna.

Robin Nelson, Chair of the Together for School Meals, is in studio on Afternoons Live with Tyler Axness to tell us why she thinks now is the time for this ballot measure in North Dakota.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Robin Nelson, a member of the Fargo School Board who is chairing a ballot measure committee aimed at universal school lunches, says her group tried to get their goal accomplished through the legislative process. It didn't work, so now they're taking their case to the voters. "We went through two legislative sessions, and we're thankful. There was some movement, but that is not what our goal was," she said on this episode of Plain Talk, referring to expansions to the lunch program made by lawmakers. "We respectfully followed that process, and due to the overwhelming support through polls in the state of North Dakota that support this concept of universal school meals, the next logical step was to take it to the voters in an initiated measure." Nelson took questions on how the measure will work, including how it will cover school lunches served through the existing program in private and tribal schools, as well as what it will cost. When a bill similar to what Nelson and her group are looking to put on the ballot was considered by lawmakers earlier this year, the Department of Public Instruction estimated the cost at $140 million. "I think it's a fair estimate" of what this new measure would cost if implemented, Nelson said, though she also pointed out that a new fiscal note will be created through the ballot measure process. If the measure passes, it would shift the cost of paying for the school lunch program away from just parents, who foot the bill through user fees, and to the broader tax base. Nelson said it will also cut out some red tape at the schools which must currently levy and collect lunch fees. "We won't have to worry about collection efforts," she said. "It will save a lot of time on the back end. Also on this episode, my co-host Chad Oban and I discuss Sen. Kevin Cramer's tough trip to Halifax, and we respond to some reader messages. Crew Dragon and Commercial Human Spaceflight. Eric Berger discusses NASA's Commercial Crew Program, initiated after the Space Shuttle retired. Boeing's entry legitimized the program, securing crucial congressional funding for competitors like SpaceX. SpaceX adapted the Dragon design for crew, involving extensive parachute testing by the "Shoot Show" team in the desert and ultimately agreeing to water landings for astronaut safety. Crew Dragon launched atop the Falcon 9 Block 5, the modern rocket iteration optimized for rapid reuse, emphasizing that reusability remained the central focus, even for human spaceflight. Guest: Eric Berger.
This week at Myrtle House Community Church, we were blessed to hear from guest speaker Stuart Watkins, who brought a heartfelt and stirring word on one of the most central, yet often misunderstood, callings in the Christian life: we are made to worship. Not just on Sunday mornings. Not only in the songs we sing. But in the whole of our being, in every corner of our daily lives, in every ordinary moment where God is present and working. Transformation Begins Within Stuart opened by reminding us that God's desire for us is transformation—the kind that starts deep inside and works its way outward. He gave this beautiful definition: “Transformation is a profound internal change of one's heart, mind and spirit, leading to new thoughts, attitudes and actions. Initiated by a relationship with God through Jesus Christ, aligning a person's core being with divine purposes.” You could almost feel the room lean in as we were reminded that transformation doesn't begin with striving… it begins with being. Worship: Not Something We Do, But Something We Are One of the most powerful themes of the morning was this truth: Worship is not an activity. Worship is an identity. Romans 12:1 calls us to “offer your bodies as a living sacrifice… this is your true and proper worship.” Worship isn't an event on a Sunday schedule. Worship is the whole orientation of our lives. Stuart said it simply: “We aren't human doers, we're human beings.” And when our being is turned toward Jesus, everything we do becomes infused with His presence. Worship is a lifestyle. It flows from the heart, shapes the atmosphere, and brings us into places of intimacy where God can transform us. Even our honesty—our raw, unfiltered prayers—become worship when they come from a heart turned toward Him. Two Kinds of People Jesus Seeks From Scripture, Stuart reminded us that Jesus is actively looking for two groups: The Lost (Luke 19:10) We were all lost once. Jesus came to seek and save us, to meet us where we were, just like Zacchaeus in the tree. Worshippers (John 4:23) Jesus told the Samaritan woman that the Father seeks true worshippers—those who worship in Spirit and in Truth. The moment we move from lost to found, we step into our new identity as worshippers. You Become What You Worship This is why worship matters so deeply. It shapes your heart, your thinking, your identity, your actions. Worship transforms us into the very image of the One we lift our eyes to. Worship in Every Season—Even the Hard Ones Stuart brought us to Acts 16, where Paul and Silas sang hymns in a prison cell. Their worship wasn't dependent on circumstance—it was anchored in identity. Even at midnight, in chains, they chose to worship. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 calls us to “give thanks in all circumstances.” Worship isn't pretending everything is perfect; it's acknowledging that God is present. Sometimes worship is loud and joyful. Sometimes worship is a silent gaze upon God's goodness, like Psalm 27 describes. Sometimes worship is sacrificial and costly, like Mary pouring perfume on Jesus' feet. But always—always—worship transforms. We Are Created to Reflect Him Stuart closed with a powerful reminder: We are created—shaped from the very beginning—to reflect the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Our ministry isn't defined by roles or departments. Our first and greatest ministry is to worship Him. When worship becomes our lifestyle… Transformation becomes our story. If you missed this Sunday, take some time this week to re-centre your heart. Invite His presence in. Worship Him in the everyday moments. Let Him reshape you from the inside out. Because you were made—truly made—to worship.
China's Censorship Campaign Against Pessimism and Social Discontent. Charles Burton discusses how China initiated a two-month campaign against "pessimism," targeting citizens who criticize the state due to economic failure, unfair housing, or joblessness. The regime ignores serious societal issues, relying on propaganda while profound discontent exists privately. Censorship is counterproductive, leading to false reporting and increasing internal cynicism toward the leadership. With official news censored, people rely on fast-running rumors, which the government attempts to deal with by arresting activists and rumor-mongers.
1. When Politicians Panicked: The New Coronavirus, Expert Opinion, and a Tragic Lapse of Reason. John Tamny discusses the severe economic contraction initiated by mandated lockdowns, such as Governor Cuomo's March 20, 2020, order in New York. Tamny argues that politicians caused the crisis by forcing successful businesses to cease operations. These sudden actions by major economies forced global investors to fundamentally rethink the future value of businesses. Although early market signals from China suggested the virus was not highly lethal, pivotal political decisions, like the cancellation of South by Southwest, triggered panic, leading markets to realize that political action, not reality, was the primary threat. Markets digested these fears and corrected before rebounding. 1918
The Somers Trial: Mackenzie's Defense, Dana's Support, and the Presidential Intervention. Richard Snow discusses how after the execution, the Navy initiated an inquiry. Richard Henry Dana fully supported Mackenzie, describing him as saintly and honorable. The court of inquiry agreed that Mackenzie had behaved honorably. However, Mackenzie surprisingly sought a formal court-martial because John Spencer and Seaman Small's wife were pressuring for a civil murder trial. The court-martial ran from February 2 to March 31 and initially concluded that Mackenzie was honorably acquitted and heroic. However, President Tyler intervened, refusing to endorse the verdict and believing Mackenzie should have been hanged as a murderer. Mackenzie was acquitted and avoided a murder trial, but his honor was tarnished. Snow recommends readers act as the jury to decide Mackenzie's actions. Retry

The Origins of Tariff Wars: China's Predatory Trade Practices Gordon Chang and Alan Tonelson Gordon Chang and Alan Tonelson agree that China initiated the trade conflict through decades of predatory and criminal trade practices. They assert that China's admission into the World Trade Organization in 2001 foolishly granted them substantial immunity from US laws designed to protect domestic industries from foreign competition. The hosts trace China's systematic violations dating to the late twentieth century, establishing a pattern of intellectual property theft and market manipulation. President Trump's tariff actions represent a long-overdue response to this entrenched aggression and economic warfare. 1890 SHANGHAI

Host Anne Thompson explores the diverse and innovative methods being employed in Australia to build and retain the technical workforce in the mining industry. From attracting new talent, to supporting early career geoscientists, to training professionals from other industries - this episode might just change your perspective on what is possible.First up, Brendan Howard, General Manager for Technical Capability at Rio Tinto and a founder of the MiEX (Minerals Industry Experience) Program, addresses the mining sector's shrinking and less diverse talent pipeline. The success of MiEX, a collaborative industry-led program, highlights the value of early engagement with undergraduate students. The pilot in January 2025 drew over 500 applicants for 69 places with 90% of participants expressing intent to pursue mining careers. New conversations are underway in North America to bring this exciting opportunity to more students.Richard Lilly, the University of Adelaide presents NExUS (National Exploration Undercover School) based in South Australia, which provides hands-on experience and essential training to geoscience students, bridging the gap between academic knowledge and industry requirements. NExUS combines technical learning with professional networking, using the South Australian Drill Core Library and nearby field sites to expose students to geophysics, core logging, and exploration through cover. Lilly is now stepping down after 10 years as Director, with the hope that this successful model will continue and be expanded to other jurisdictions to better prepare geoscientists for evolving exploration challenges.Lastly, Deng Ngang Deng, from Target Mining Resources, shares his inspiring journey from South Sudan to professional geoscientist in Western Australia. Deng was involved in establishing the Pan Africa Resource Reporting Code (PARC) and an invited plenary speaker at SEG 2024 in Namibia. Chief nursing officer Rhonda Collins discusses her article "Nurse-initiated protocols for sepsis: a strategic imperative for patient care and hospital operations." Rhonda explains why sepsis, the leading cause of death in U.S. hospitals and a $62 billion annual burden, demands the same urgency as stroke and STEMI. She highlights the power of nurse-initiated standing orders to speed recognition and treatment, reduce ED congestion, improve outcomes and cut costs. Drawing on real-world results from Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Health System, she shows how standardized sepsis protocols supported by FDA-cleared technology reduced mortality by 39 percent, shortened length of stay and saved thousands per patient. Rhonda emphasizes that national standardization, objective tools and empowering nurses to practice at the top of their license are essential to making sepsis the "third S" in emergency care. Book Title: Wild Ride: A Short History of the Opening and Closing of the Chinese Economy Author: Anne Stevenson Yang Headline: Deng Xiaoping's Reforms and the Rise of Red Capitalism Following Mao Zedong's death, Deng Xiaoping initiated economic reforms in 1979, driven by the need for hard currency for international travel. His solution was to create hermetically sealed export zones, like Shenzhen, to attract foreign companies and currency. This "red capitalism" led to an elite class, where Deng Xiaoping's daughter and Jiang Zemin's son, Jiang Mianheng (Mr. 10%), secured money and political power, often by taking equity in new companies. 1954
Project 2025 has emerged as one of the most ambitious and controversial blueprints for American governance in recent memory. Initiated by the Heritage Foundation and backed by a coalition of over 100 conservative organizations, the project's stated mission is to radically restructure the federal government and centralize executive power, promising what supporters call a return to accountability and efficiency. Critics, meanwhile, warn of its sweeping threats to democratic norms, federal checks and balances, and the livelihoods of millions.Unveiled in the form of a 900-page manifesto titled “Mandate for Leadership,” Project 2025 provides granular directions, agency by agency, for an incoming administration determined to overhaul how Washington operates. According to the Heritage Foundation, the “heart of the project” is dismantling what they label as an unaccountable bureaucracy that has “drifted too far from the people's will.” Kevin Roberts, Heritage's president, bluntly declared, “All federal employees should answer to the president.” This vision is animated by an expansive concept known as the unitary executive theory, essentially arguing that the president should have direct control over all executive branch agencies, shedding their current independence. For listeners wondering about concrete changes, consider the plan for the Department of State. Project 2025 advocates for the wholesale removal of agency leadership officials before Inauguration Day, replacing them with individuals hand-picked for strict ideological alignment. Kiron Skinner, who penned the State Department chapter, envisioned a department led exclusively by loyalists, aiming to “remove those not aligned with the president's priorities.” This move is designed not just to hasten the implementation of foreign policy goals, but to prevent bureaucratic resistance—a key grievance among the plan's authors.Just as striking is Project 2025's approach to the federal workforce. Its architects call for the resurrection and expansion of “Schedule F,” a controversial employment status for federal employees. Schedule F would classify hundreds of thousands—if not more—career civil servants as political appointees, stripping them of longstanding job protections. The stated goal is a government “purged of entrenched opposition” so that “key decisions reflect the president's will on day one.” Critics like the National Federation of Federal Employees describe this as a “scheme to purge career professionals,” warning it would turn public administration into a partisan machine vulnerable to corruption. The plan doesn't stop at restructuring government jobs. Project 2025 lays out a 180-day playbook, which includes ready-to-sign executive orders to immediately strip environmental regulations, curb civil rights protections, and overhaul social welfare programs. According to the Center for Progressive Reform, executive actions under this strategy have already targeted the rollback of climate rules, weakened worker safety standards, and eliminated agencies altogether. The swift elimination of the Consumer Financial Protection Board and US Agency for International Development, as documented by Government Executive, was meant to signal a new era of “government efficiency” but resulted in “widespread layoffs and institutional chaos.”Project 2025's policy ambitions also extend to social issues. In its blueprint, it calls for curtailing access to abortion, undoing LGBTQ protections, and limiting federal action on racial equity. The ACLU describes these proposals as “an unprecedented rollback of civil rights and liberties,” comparing their scope to a rewriting of American society's basic fabric.Proponents lay claim to a mandate from voters frustrated by government gridlock and what they see as bureaucratic overreach. Opponents counter that this is not reform but a consolidation of power. Legal experts from across the spectrum worry that such an agenda could collapse the traditional American barrier between politics and administration, risking both the appearance and the reality of authoritarian rule.Several milestones now lie ahead. With ongoing lawsuits from labor unions and scrutiny by watchdog groups, the coming months promise court battles and congressional hearings over Project 2025's legality and impact. Congressional Republicans and administration officials are preparing for rapid implementation, while a coalition of civil rights organizations and some lawmakers are vowing organized resistance. The stakes for American governance have rarely been higher. Whether Project 2025 becomes a historical footnote or a defining blueprint for the future will depend on political will, legal battles, and the choices made in the next critical year. Thanks for tuning in to this week's deep dive. Part of the Festival of Sacred Music Series at The New School at Commonweal Join us for the third in a series of sacred music celebrations at Commonweal, an afternoon duet of sarod and tabla with Manik Khan and Nilan Chaudhuri. Part of the Festival of Sacred Music Series These concerts are presented in collaboration with long-time Commonweal friend Toby Symington, executive director of the Lloyd Symington Foundation and transpersonal astrologer. Held at the solstice and equinox, the concerts—and gatherings afterward—are designed to bring people together in a convivial setting around music which delights, inspires, and elevates the soul. From Toby: Manik Khan has been steeped in the ancient melodies of North Indian classical music since birth. The youngest son of the legendary Sarod maestro, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, he grew up listening to his father in countless concerts and attending his classes at the esteemed Ali Akbar College of Music in San Rafael, California. He initially studied tabla under the guidance of Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri, but the greater call to follow in the footsteps of his family brought Manik, at the age of 13, to formally train on the Sarod with his father. He spent his formative years accompanying his father on stage, touring for the last decade of his father's extensive and iconic performance career. Manik's own solo career has brought him throughout India, South America, and the United States. Nilan Chaudhuri is a Bay Area based percussionist, educator, and performer. Initiated into the tradition of Indian Classical Music at the age of five by his father, Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri, Nilan has been performing as a tabla soloist and accompanist for nearly two decades. Drawing inspiration from his father's innovative approach to classical tabla solo, Nilan was determined from a young age to be a soloist. In addition to maintaining a rigorous performing schedule, Nilan teaches Tabla throughout the Bay Area as a faculty member at the Ali Akbar College of Music, in San Rafael, and as the Director of Percussion at Chitresh Das Institute, in San Mateo. He also serves as an archivist at the Ali Akbar College of Music, where the construction of a musical archive spanning 40 years of his Father's work, is underway. It's his lifelong mission to contribute to the preservation and enrichment of Indian Classical percussion. *** The New School is Commonweal's learning community and podcast — we offer conversations, workshops, and other events in areas that Commonweal champions: finding meaning, growing health and resilience, advocating for justice, and stewarding the natural world. The Knesset Constitution Committee is slated this week to discuss a controversial immigration bill being advanced by committee chair Religious Zionism party MK Simcha Rothman. Initiated against the backdrop of debate over asylum seekers, the proposed Basic Law: Entry, Immigration and Status in Israel, passed a preliminary reading earlier this year and aims to establish a legal framework for immigration and residency in Israel for those who are not eligible to immigrate under the Law of Return. It proposes sweeping immigration restrictions that have caused alarm among potentially affected population groups. These include international couples comprising Israelis and their non-citizen partners. KAN reporter Naomi Segal heard more about the concerns of the community from Gareth Williams. Today returning on Sense of Soul we have Padma Aon Prakasha he is an evolutionary catalyst and wisdom author bringing together ancient wisdom and modern science. Padma's books, music and multimedia are drawn from the traditions he has been initiated into. His books include: The Power of Shakti, Womb Wisdom, Sacred Relationships (Inner Traditions), The Christ Blueprint, The Nine Eyes of Light: Ascension Keys from Egypt (NAB/Random House), Dimensions of Love, Shiva's Hologram: The Maheshwara Sutra and The Science of Sound (O Books). Since 1997 he has presented, lectured and taught in 20 countries worldwide. After being initiated into the Brahmin lineage at age 4, he read the Bhagavad Gita followed by the Bible at age 7 and a whole host of spiritual teachings by age 11. When he was 21 he had an experience of the AUM and God Consciousness that changed his life forever, followed by a direct and unexpected meeting with Christ Yeshua. Shortly after this, Padma was initiated in India through a Near Death Experience in Badrinath by Master Babaji, and into the Saivite Lineage in Kedarnath. Further Initiations into Saivite Tantra and the RK Veda through the Arunachala Sampradaya and Ganesha followed. Padma was also Initiated into Tibetan Tantras through female teachers Prem Prabhuta and Margot Anand, and is an Initiate in the Order of Melchizedek. Padma's most powerful ‘formal' Initiations came through Sri Om, an Awakened teacher in London from the Lineage of Buddha Maitreya, associated with the enlightened wisdom of many traditions. After this, Padma sat in Samadhi, the highest form of bliss meditation, for two months, 16 hours a day. Samadhi activates the pineal gland and many dormant gifts within us, which Padma then demonstrated through his numerous books, workshops and transmissions over the ensuing years. https://padmaaon.com Visit www.senseofsoulpodcast.com
