In this episode I am joined by Lorna Byrne, spiritual teacher and best selling author of “Angels in my Hair”. Lorna describes her childhood in Ireland when she first began to see and interact with angels and souls of the dead, and recalls how she navigated these visionary experiences. Lorna discusses the different types of angels that she sees, as well as other beings such as souls of the deceased, land spirits, elementals and more, and how others might learn to see as she does. Lorna also reflects on feeling the energy of a place; her lifelong experience of being different to others; unusual reactions people have towards her; and the importance of love, hope, and compassion. … Video version: https://www.guruviking.com/podcast/ep301-angels-in-my-hair-lorna-byrne | Also available on Youtube, iTunes, & Spotify – search ‘Guru Viking Podcast'. … Topics include: 00:00 - Intro 00:52 - Growing up different 04:17 - Learning from angels 05:27 - Be your unique self 06:36 - Seeing angels physically 07:50 - Holding things back and confusion about mankind 09:07 - Consulted by clerics, theologians, and academics 10:04 - Is God real? 11:32 - Responses from people all over the world 13:02 - Deep interactions with strangers 15:20 - Lorna's view of human beings 16:39 - Can anyone see angels and spirits? 19:10 - Being open to new knowledge 21:39 - Intertwining of the human body and soul 23:43 - Everything is possible 25:57 - Has Lorna met others who can see angels? 28:32 - People who pretend to see spirits for money 39:37 - Feeling the energy of a place 30:35 - Local traditions, land spirits, and the range of beings Lorna encounters 35:59 - How to see spirits 37:53 - The Spirit of the Water 39:52 - Everything has energy 41:51 - Angel at the Centre of the Earth 43:25 - Detecting the influence of Satan 45:59 - A story of boy soldiers 49:06 - Cycles of abuse 50:12 - Thoughts about the future of mankind 52:50 - Love, hope, and compassion 54:43 - Lorna's retreat centre, Sanctuary

Artists and musician team up for BAU show There's plenty of cross-pollination behind the scenes at the Poetry of Place exhibit scheduled to open March 8 with a reception at the Beacon Artist Union (BAU) Gallery. Next month will be mixed-media artist and BAU member Karen Allen's turn to display in the showcase gallery visible from the street, and she invited Jenn Wiggs, who lives in Missouri, to share the space. "Jenn said that she always wanted a show in New York, so I found one," says Allen, who resides in Westchester County. Allen discovered Wiggs' work online during the pandemic, and they gelled. During regular virtual visits, they discuss approach, technique and philosophy. Another of Allen's partnerships will also be on display - with vibraphonist Chris Dingman. They met in October at an Ossining art fair after Dingman paused to study one of Allen's pieces. "I saw him ponder it for a while and then circle around it like a shark," Allen says. For their collaboration, she lends the musician a piece of her art and "I connect with it and visualize the energy," says Dingman, who lives in Nyack. He improvises tones, splices them together and drenches the mix in effects, resulting in experimental ambient sounds. Dingman will perform at the gallery during the opening reception with a hip-high vibraphone, a cross between a piano and a percussion instrument. His 4- to 6-minute compositions will be accessible through QR codes. The Dingman track responding to Allen's "Shadow Hamadryade" stacks layers of cascading notes over a propulsive rhythm. Intertwining drone tones and a prominent hum compete for attention. After the emergence of a throbbing vocal, the song builds to a crescendo. Another piece of music is inspired by Allen's "Third Eye of Hook Mountain," which augments the vaguely discernible features of the Nyack landmark with an underbelly of what could be a river of darkness or primordial layering. As Dingman's tones unfold, dynamics swell, notes seem to play at random intervals and an electronic, Morse Code-like tone chimes. Allen's artistic vision began with a realistic bent: landscapes, figuratives and still lifes. But after meeting Wiggs, she dug into her feelings and "let the spirit take control." According to her website, Allen follows "visual intuitions" and explores a "poetic vision" to convey moods, rather than objects, as she turns toward abstraction. With that approach, "it's easy to start getting into a canvas or montage," she says. "The hard part is knowing when it's done." Some abstract artists are averse to interpreting their work. Others say they want only to know how a piece makes viewers feel - ask at your peril if that cloudy figure in the corner is a bird. For Wiggs, "if someone tells me they see a squirrel and I recognize the squirrel, I'm painting it out," says Wiggs. "Everyone wants to know the meaning behind an edgy piece of art or music. The question is often the answer because sometimes words fail us, and it's just about how we respond emotionally." A joint opening reception for Poetry of Place; Translucent Hues, by Eileen Sackman; and a member group show is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. on March 8 at the BAU Gallery, 506 Main St. The exhibits continue through April 6. BAU Gallery is open Saturday and Sunday, noon to 6 p.m., and by appointment. See baugallery.org.

In this edition of the EcoPreneur's Edge series, Mikee and I welcome Kevin Long, founder of Intertwined in Harrisburg, PA to talk about sustainabile spiritual journeys and eco-justice. Kevin went from a successful cybersecurity career to founding Intertwined, a community where faith and ecological justice meet. Kevin's spiritual journey began at Lancaster Theological Seminary, where he redefined how Christianity interacts with the environment, seeking to inspire a narrative of inclusivity and healing through Jesus' teachings.  Our conversation with Kevin uncovers the struggles and triumphs of engaging with one's community to foster a sense of belonging and purpose. Kevin reveals his mission with Intertwined FC is to create a safe and inclusive space for systemic change, focusing on climate action and advocacy for marginalized populations. Drawing from his experiences within the Presbyterian Church, Kevin dispels misconceptions about its rigidity, highlighting the vibrant support he received for his faith-based endeavors. We discuss how Intertwined was born from these experiences, offering a flexible spiritual engagement that emphasizes eco-justice and community gatherings, inviting newcomers to explore spirituality in a nurturing environment and outside of a building. Before the pandemic, Peter Kiesewalter didn't think much of moths. Like a lot of people, he'd thought of them mostly as pests. But when his brother Tobi, an interpretive naturalist for Ontario Parks and moth enthusiast, showed him macro photos he'd taken of them, he was blown away. “[They were] absolutely stunning,” Peter says. “The amount of colors and hair were just extraordinary.”Peter is a Grammy-nominated musician based in New York City. He's composed music for ABC News, Monday Night Football, and even a “Winnie The Pooh” show. As COVID-19 spread in 2020, work for him and his partner Whitney La Grange, a professional violinist, dried up. So they hunkered down at the family cottage in Ottawa, Canada, along with Tobi's family. Peter was looking for a new show idea, and when his brother opened up the world of moths to him, he was hooked. “I had to find a way to interpret moths artistically,” he said. “And I started to find connections between them and us.”That led to “The Moth Project,” a concept album and stage show that combines moth science and visuals with a whole ecosystem of musical genres: 80s pop, funk, classical, covers, even spoken word. Each song ties a stage of a moth's life (emergence, flight, migration) to a universal human experience. But for Peter, a lot of these songs turned out to be far more personal than he initially thought.SciFri producer and host of our Universe of Art podcast D Peterschmidt sat down with Peter and Tobi Kiesewalter and Whitney La Grange to find out how this album came together and how understanding moths could better help us understand ourselves. If you want to see “The Moth Project” live, you can find out about upcoming shows here.Universe of Art is hosted and produced by D Peterschmidt, who also wrote the music. How Metaphor Shapes Science | Intertwining The Lives Of Moths And Humans Through Music

Metaphors can help us understand complicated scientific concepts. But they can also have a downside. And, a pair of musicians wrote a concept album inspired by moths—and found that humans have more in common with the insects than they expected. How Metaphor Has Shaped Science, For Better Or WorseHere at Science Friday, we're big fans of metaphors. They can make complicated scientific concepts easier to understand, for both non-experts and scientists themselves. For example, “the big bang” helps us visualize the beginning of the universe. Or we can understand DNA's role better as a “building block of life.”But some of these scientific metaphors also have a downside, and can even set research back.Sam Harnett and Chris Hoff are the hosts of the podcast series “The World According to Sound,” and they sat down with Science Friday's Director of News and Audio, John Dankosky, to talk about their new project, “An Inexact Science.” They discuss a special two-hour episode that explores how language and metaphor have shaped science, for better or worse.Intertwining The Lives Of Moths And Humans Through MusicBefore the pandemic, Peter Kiesewalter didn't think much of moths. But for Peter, a lot of these songs turned out to be far more personal than he initially thought.SciFri producer and host of our Universe of Art podcast D Peterschmidt sat down with Peter and Tobi Kiesewalter and Whitney La Grange to find out how this album came together and how understanding moths could better help us understand ourselves.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com. 10 Sleeping Positions and Their Real Meanings

Even in the happiest couples, a lot of things are often left unsaid. However, when we fall asleep, our subconscious wakes up and spills all the beans. Watch the video to find out what you and your partner's sleeping position reveals about your relationship! For example, sleeping at a certain distance while still holding hands or staying connected through any other minimal touch shows that both of you are confident in the relationship. You don't need any over-the-top gestures to know that your partner is head-over-heels in love with you. Hilary Thompson, a wellness consultant with SleepTrain, says that minimal touch is just a little reminder of your presence and the affection you give to each other. So you can sigh with relief; your subconscious confirms that your relationship is on top of its game! TIMESTAMPS: Spooning 0:44 Head on the chest 1:38 Back-to-back 2:16 Face-to-face 3:08 Sleeping on your stomachs 4:01 Hand touching 4:46 Leg hugging 5:27 Tangling 6:18 One of the partners dominates the bed 7:04 Sleeping in separate beds 8:03 Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ SUMMARY: - Spooning indicates intimacy and deep understanding between partners. This position also shows your roles in the relationship. If you're the big spoon, you're protective of your partner and can even be a bit possessive at times. - According to Patti Wood, a body language expert and the author of Success Signals: A Guide to Reading Body Language, the partner who puts their head on the other's chest shows their dependence, while the one who sleeps on their back demonstrates their power and desire to protect their other half. - Sleeping back-to-back can have completely different meanings depending on the space between you two. If your backs are touching, it shows that you're an established couple that values their space but manages to keep that connection with one another. - Sleeping with your faces and bodies turned towards each other is a position that signifies emotional connection. If you and your partner are touching during face-to-face sleeping, it means that you want the same things and understand each other perfectly. - If both you and your partner are big fans of sleeping on your stomach, this could be a sign of a little trouble in your personal paradise. - Sleeping at a certain distance while still holding hands or staying connected through any other minimal touch shows that both of you are confident in the relationship. - Intertwining your legs together while sleeping is another great sign for your relationship. Even if you don't really sleep that close to one another, this “leg hugging” shows your bond with your partner and your desire for deeper emotional and physical connection. - Tangling is a popular sleeping position among couples who just started dating. This is that stage of any new relationship when you just can't get enough of each other. And that's exactly what this position signifies. - If you or your partner prefer a starfish position and take up a whole lotta space while sleeping, it's not really a good sign. It basically indicates a selfish person who wants to be in charge at all times. Another important factor is whether your heads are at the same level. - The reasons behind a couple sleeping in different beds can vary from comfort issues and snoring to really serious problems in the relationship. In the lead-up to every election cycle, pundits predict that Latino Americans will overwhelmingly vote in favor of the Democratic candidate. And it's true—Latino voters do tilt Democratic. Hillary Clinton won the Latino vote in a “landslide,” Barack Obama “crushed” Mitt Romney among Latino voters in his reelection, and, four years earlier, the Democratic ticket beat the McCain-Palin ticket by a margin of more than two to one. But those numbers belie a more complicated picture. Because of decades of investment and political courtship, as well as a nuanced and varied cultural identity, the Republican party has had a much longer and stronger bond with Hispanics. How is this possible for a party so associated with draconian immigration and racial policies? In The Hispanic Republican: The Shaping of an American Political Identity, from Nixon to Trump (Ecco, 2020), historian and political commentator Geraldo Cadava illuminates the history of the millions of Hispanic Republicans who, since the 1960s, have had a significant impact on national politics. Intertwining the little understood history of Hispanic Americans with a cultural study of how post–World War II Republican politicians actively courted the Hispanic vote during the Cold War (especially Cuban émigrés) and during periods of major strife in Central America (especially during Iran-Contra), Cadava offers insight into the complicated dynamic between Latino liberalism and conservatism, which, when studied together, shine a crucial light on a rapidly changing demographic that will impact American elections for years to come. Throughout US history, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people have been pathologized, victimized, and criminalized. Reports of lynching, burning, or murdering of LGBTQ people have been documented for centuries. Prior to the 1970s, LGBTQ people were deemed as having psychological disorders and subsequently subject to electroshock therapy and other ineffective and cruel treatments. LGBTQ people have historically been arrested or imprisoned for crimes like sodomy, cross-dressing, and gathering in public spaces. And while there have been many strides to advocate for LGBTQ rights in contemporary times, there are still many ways that the criminal justice system works against LGBTQ and their lives, liberties, and freedoms. Queering Law and Order: LGBTQ Communities and the Criminal Justice System (Lexington Books, 2020) examines the state of LGBTQ people within the criminal justice system. Intertwining legal cases, academic research, and popular media, Nadal reviews a wide range of issues—ranging from historical heterosexist and transphobic legislation to police brutality to the prison industrial complex to family law. Grounded in Queer Theory and intersectional lenses, each chapter provides recommendations for queering and disrupting the justice system. This book serves as both an academic resource and a call to action for readers who are interested in advocating for LGBTQ rights. In this dynamic episode, Robert and Kyle, along with other veteran hosts, discuss the often overlooked topic of conventional forces versus special operations forces (SOF). They offer an internal perspective, sharing their unique experiences and the critical role SOF plays in global events. They challenge preconceptions, affirming that anyone can aspire to join the SOF with sufficient determination and guidance. They also underscore the importance of fluidity of roles within the military and the potential organizational consequences of leadership unwilling to yield talent. The discourse then shifts to the importance of internal cohesion and communication. The intriguing discussion probes the diverse cultures within the military and why both are essential to maintain a balanced force. Intertwining expert opinions, veteran experiences, and actionable advice, this episode promises a deeper understanding of the military world through first-hand accounts. We proceed to examine the relationship and communication between conventional army and SOF. We stress the importance of regular dialogues, breaking down barriers, and creating mutual understanding. We question the inherent power bias favoring special operations and emphasize recognizing the journey and contributions of conventional army members. Delving deeper, we scrutinize the competitiveness within these forces, the effect of transitions on a team, and the contrasting dynamic of the corporate-like conventional army against the closely-knit SOF. The episode concludes with a challenging query on the potential parity of conventional forces with SOF given the same resources. Lastly, we explore the selection and training processes, highlighting the 75th Ranger Regiment. Through the lens of former Regiment member, we reveal the grit and determination needed to join this elite organization. We then shift to examine the interplay and mutual relevance of both conventional and special operation units, emphasizing the importance of unity amidst competition. This episode does not only appeal to military enthusiasts but to anyone interested in personal growth, unity, and purposeful rivalry. _____________ Please leave us a review on Apple/Spotify Podcasts: Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/mentors-for-military-podcast/id1072421783 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/3w4RiZBxBS8EDy6cuOlbUl #mentors4mil  #mentorsformilitary Mentors4mil Links: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/Mentors4mil Patreon Support: https://www.patreon.com/join/Mentors4mil  Intro music "Long Way Down" by Silence & Light is used with permission. Rasul Mowatt and Too Black join Breht to discuss their new book Laundering Black Rage: The Washing of Black Death, People, Property, and Profits. The book is a spatial and historical critique of the capitalist State that examines how Black Rage—conceived as a constructive and logical response to the conquest of resources, land, and human beings racialized as Black—is cleaned for the unyielding means of White capital. Interlacing political theory with international histories of Black rebellion, it presents a thoughtful challenge to the counterinsurgent tactics of the State that consistently convert Black Rage into a commodity to be bought, sold, and repressed. Laundering Black Rage investigates how the Rage directed at the police murder of George Floyd could be marshalled to funnel the Black Lives Matter movement into corporate advertising and questionable leadership, while increasing the police budgets inside the laundry cities of capital - largely with our consent. Essayist/Performer Too Black and Geographer Rasul A. Mowatt assert Black Rage as a threat to the flow of capital and the established order of things, which must therefore be managed by the process of laundering. Intertwining stories of Black resistance throughout the African diaspora, State building under capitalism, cities as sites of laundering, and the world making of empire, Laundering Black Rage also lays the groundwork for upending the laundering process through an anti-colonial struggle of reverse-laundering conquest. Relevant to studies of race and culture, history, politics, and the built environment, this pathbreaking work is essential reading for scholars and organizers enraged at capitalism and White supremacy laundering their work for nefarious means. For decades now, we've all heard the refrain – we are in a war against obesity, with perhaps the most important battle being fought over the health of our children. What better place could there be to defeat the enemy of obesity than our schools, where children are fed and educated and educated about being fed on a daily basis? But how did we come to see health promotion in schools as the key solution to solving the problem of obesity? And is obesity really at the root of our problems to begin with?  Intertwining policy analysis and ethnography, José Tenorio's School Food Politics in Mexico: The Corporatization of Obesity and Healthy Eating Policies (Routledge, 2023) examines how, and why now, the promotion of healthy lifestyles has been positioned as an ideal ‘solution' to obesity and how this shapes the preparation, sale and consumption of food in schools in Mexico. This book situates obesity as a structural problem enabled by market-driven policy change, problematizing the focus on individual behavior change which underpins current obesity policy. Expanding the conversation on the politics of food in schools, obesity policy and dominant perspectives on the relation between food and health, this book is a must-read for scholars of food and nutrition, public health and education, as well as those with an interest in development studies and policy enactment and outcomes.
