I don't think Opportunity will hit five percent this election. It's fun to flirt, people are frustrated, but I was there when Colin Craig got close and failed, saw Gareth Morgan then Geoff Simmons have a crack and fail. I encourage anyone listening to have a look at their policies, do the maths and figure out for themselves how much worse, or better off, you'll be. Their new leader is a great communicator. Her main job was an environmental/carbon advisor to businesses. I don't really know what that means, but she's really lovely. The problem with getting to five percent is timing. The closer we get to election, this flirt, this fascination, this honeymoon, if you will, will have worn off. Voters go into the booth trying to keep one side in, or one side out. There's little room for flights of fancy in the polling booth. The other thing people do in the polling booth is take out insurance. By election week it's pretty clear, if you're listening, who is doing well and who is not. So, voters take out insurance, it's why I've said consistently since last year that Winston will do well this year. Labour voters, not National, will slide into his DMs. He's offering them everything Hipkins is short of a Labour government on everything to from stopping asset sales to nationalising industry. One of TOP's charms is that you don't know which way they'll go, It's also their biggest weakness. They're unlikely to get the vast majority of their policies into a coalition agreement, so you're basically voting for who gets the keys to the kingdom. The Chinese economy grew by five percent year on year in the first quarter of 2026. Retail sales of consumer goods, a key indicator of consumption, rose 2.4 percent during the same period.

In 1970, a woman named Vera Rubin pointed a spectrograph at the Andromeda galaxy and found that it was wrong. Not the galaxy. The galaxy was doing what galaxies do. What was wrong was every prediction about how the galaxy should behave. The stars at the outer edge of Andromeda were moving too fast. Not slightly too fast. Not within the margin of error. They were moving as though something enormous was holding them in place, something with gravitational mass far exceeding everything visible in the galaxy combined. The stars were orbiting matter that no telescope on Earth, or in orbit, or conceivable within the laws of electromagnetic radiation, could detect. Rubin published her findings. The physics community did what physics communities do when a woman presents evidence that the standard model is incomplete. They told her to check her equipment. She checked it. She observed more galaxies. She found the same result in all of them. Every galaxy she pointed her instrument at was embedded in a halo of invisible mass that outweighed the visible matter by roughly six to one.

Consumer expects power prices to increase by about five percent this year and has said it is lines charges that are to blame. Stats NZ figures show electricity went up 12.1 percent last year. This week's episode is a case study in what AI looks like when it's doing real work. Juan Garcia runs an insurance company in Spain. Industry average profit margin is 5%. He's at 15%, headed for 18%. The difference? Five AI agents in production doing real work. Not pilot projects. Not demos for the board. His claims adjusters went from 10 cases a day to 50 because the AI does everything except the stuff that actually needs a human. Here's the thing. Juan started this in mid-2023 with GPT-3.5. His team built 75 subagents to control quality on that first chatbot. That's the kind of smart engineering that makes AI work in production. He'll tell you exactly when to let the AI decide, when to kick it to a human, and why confidence thresholds matter more than anyone talks about. He'll also tell you where they won't use AI. An Australian mining company is predicting a West Coast mining town could be sitting on a huge supply of a valuable mineral used in everything from mobile phones to solar panels and electric vehicles. Buller Mayor Jamie Cleine spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.

The Council of Trade Unions is criticising the government's efforts to lower inflation, saying it is driving people into poverty. Economists say unemployment will hit five percent by the end of the year, but the Employers and Manufacturers Association says the hike is not a surprise.
