Today, many children have issues with speech that may be associated with dental development.Issues that may associate with lisps include high narrow palates, open bites, and tongue ties.So what should parents and professionals know and understand? To help us understand the issues is Linda D'Onofrio who is a CCC-SLP specialized speech-language pathologist with a focus on the link between crooked dental arches and orofacial muscle dysfunction.Linda has lectured globally on the connection between speech issues and childhood dental development, which is a powerful tool that anyone with children should be aware of.

This episode is all about the Lisp family of programming languages! Ever looked at Lisp and wondered why so many programmers gush about such a weird looking programming language style? What's with all those parentheses? Surely there must be something you get out of them for so many programming nerds to gush about the language! We do a light dive into Lisp's history, talk about what makes Lisp so powerful, and nerd out about the many, many kinds of Lisps out there!Announcement: Christine is gonna give an intro-to-Scheme tutorial at our next Hack & Craft! Saturday July 2nd, 2022 at 20:00-22:00 ET! Come and learn some Scheme with us!Links:Various histories of Lisp:History of Lisp by John McCarthyThe Evolution of Lisp by Guy L. Steele and Richard P. GabrielHistory of LISP by Paul McJonesWilliam Byrd's The Most Beautiful Program Ever Written demonstrates just how easy it is to write lisp in lisp, showing off the kernel of evaluation living at every modern programming language!M-expressions (the original math-notation-vision for users to operate on) vs S-expressions (the structure Lisp evaluators actually operate at, in direct representational mirror of the typically, but not necessarily, parenthesized representation of the same).Lisp-1 vs Lisp-2... well, rather than give a simple link and analysis, have a thorough one.Lisp machinesMIT's CADR was the second iteration of the lisp machine, and the most influential on everything to come. Then everything split when two separate companies implemented it...Lisp Machines, Incorporated (LMI), founded by famous hacker Richard Greenblatt, who aimed to keep the MIT AI Lab hacker culture alive by only hiring programmers part-time.Symbolics was the other rival company. Took venture capital money, was a commercial success for quite a while. These systems were very interesting, there's more to them than just the rivalry. But regarding that, the book Hackers (despite its issues) captures quite a bit about the AI lab before this and then its split, including a ton of Lisp history. Some interesting things happening over at lisp-machine.orgThe GNU manifestio mentions Lisp quite a bit, including that the plan was for the system to be mostly C and Lisp.Worse is Better, including the original (but the first of those two links provides a lot of context)The AI winter. Neat stuff, though not a great license choice (even if technically FOSS) in our opinion and Rich Hickey kinda blew up his community so maybe use something else these days.Hy, always hy-lariousFennel, cutest lil' Lua Lisp you've ever seenWebassembly's text syntax isn't technically a Lisp, but let's be honest... is it technically not a Lisp either?!Typed Racket and HackettEmacs... Are you tearing your hair out over a persistent lisp? Do you have a client with a lateral lisp that resists correction? If so, then this podcast can help you understand what to look at in order to correct that lisp once and for all.
Common Lisp was written in the 80s as a kind of an amalgam of the existing Lisps at the time. To make sure the Common Lisp would stay relevant, it was made backward compatible so that existing legacy systems could run on it. One thing in common to these big old systems like Lisp is a lot more mutation, and the cool thing about this legacy is that it has a baked experience – it learns and it has learned. Today we talk to Eric Normand, an experienced functional programmer, trainer, speaker, and consultant on all things functional programming. He started writing Lisp in 2000 and is now a Clojure expert, producing the most comprehensive suite of Clojure training material at purelyfunctional.tv. He also consults with companies to use functional programming to better serve business objectives. We talk about problems in legacy code basis utilizing functional programming, the abstract nature of programs, the wisdom of Lisp, and more. When you’re done listening to the episode, make sure to check out Eric’s Clojure training and his podcast, as well as connect with him on LinkedIn. Back at it again talkin about life and things
When kids start to talk it can be exciting and endearing. The cute ways they get words wrong, their way of pronouncing certain letters. Emily Mackie is a speech pathologist and founder of Speak about Speech. She says that some of these quirks can be developmentally appropriate, and some can be a sign of something more.
Lisps have traditionally been highly interactive. This allowed AI researchers and language developers to iterate quickly and learn about what works and what doesn’t. How can you tap into this in your workflow?

Conrad speaks clearly about his love of LISP and how that evolved into Clojure. His projects have been inspired by teaching and remaining true to the spirit of LISPs as a toolkit for building languages and now we see that being brought to the blockchain. It never grows old ! Juan Pedro Bolívar Puente, Independent Consultant, Sinusoidal Engineering, Germany, gives the first talk in the first panel, Low-level and Systems Programming, on the 2nd day of the ICFP conference. Relaxed Radix Balanced Trees (RRB-Trees) is one of the latest members in a family of persistent tree based data-structures that combine wide branching factors with simple and relatively flat structures. Like the battle-tested immutable sequences of Clojure and Scala, they have ffectively constant lookup and updates, good cache utilization, but also logarithmic concatenation and slicing. Our goal is to bring the benefits of persistent data structures to the discipline of systems programming via generic yet efficient immutable vectors supporting transient batch updates. We describe a C++ implementation that can be integrated in the runtime of higher level languages with a C core (Lisps like Guile or Racket, but also Python or Ruby), thus widening the access to these persistent data structures.
In this episode I talk with Federico Carrone. We talk his Erlang, MLs, Lisps, various other languages, his "This is not a Monad Tutorial" interviews, and much, much more.

Hi! We’re back with the second episode of Let Me Ascertain You: Sex Variants 1941 recorded live here in NYC at Joe’s Pub. This series takes its inspiration from a 1941 medical book by Dr. George W. Henry. Subtitled "A Study of Homosexual Pattern," Dr. Henry classified these case studies as homosexuals, bi-sexuals, or narcissists. A little something for everyone. In this episode we’ll start off with the case study of Irene K., played at our live show by Kate Buddeke. The evening’s MC Trey Lyford will first give us a little intro to Irene K., and his words are taken verbatim from Dr. Henry’s "general impressions" of the variant in question. Then you’ll hear "That Crazy Business" a song written by Andrea Grody about the case study Nora M. performed by Jessie Shelton and Nathan Dame. The last two performances are based on the same patient, Donald H. First actor Dan Domingues performs Donald’s own words from his personal history and we’ll follow that with a song, "The Future Looks Very Fine," written by Cesar Alvarez, and performed here by Cesar and the rest of his band The Lisps which are Sammy Tunis, Eric Farber, and Lorenzo Wolff.
