There are many layers to how LGBT folks may have experienced loneliness or isolation through several factors. A few can be not being able to come out safely or not having a community to share similar experiences. Queer loneliness is still an ongoing experience for some of us and we try to expand our understanding to open ourselves to vulnerability and provide some light to those who need/want guidance.

For LGBT+ folx, being in the closet becomes our safe space. We get to choose to spread the flames of acceptance to achieve “normalcy,” or remain in the closet due to fear of various circumstances, such as violence and/or not being accepted. Coming out, as the spectrum is evolving, is an ongoing journey, even for those who have been out for years. And while we navigate both out-of-the-closet and in-the-closet relationships, one must realize that being out is a privilege and find ways to respect others, even in the case where love and relationships are maintained in secret. No one gets to choose the narrative of when or how someone chooses to come out, except that particular person. However, we can can choose to love one another and create safe spaces beyond the closet.
