If you were curating a mixtape that might be heard by aliens billions of years from now - but definitely would be seen by your fellow Earthlings - what would you put on it? In 1977, two Voyager spacecraft launched from Cape Canaveral on a journey that would take them beyond our solar system. Affixed to the side of these two planetary explorers was the Voyager Golden Record — the ultimate mixtape of humanity — containing 27 pieces of music as well as pictures and sounds of Earth. But how did these selections get made? Nearly 50 years later, we're teaming up with our friends at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum's podcast, AirSpace, to explore what's on the record, how it got made, and its legacy.Learn more about AirSpace! Welcome, Earthlings and Cybertronians alike, to another episode of Play Comics-where the only thing more confusing than the continuity is trying to fold yourself into a PS2 disc case! This time, we're rolling out (and occasionally transforming) into the wild world of the 2004 Transformers video game. Yes, the one that's based on Transformers: Armada-even though the box art was too shy to admit it, and the plot zigzags harder than a Mini-Con on a caffeine rush. Joining us for this electrifying adventure is none other than Charles Shelton from the TransMissions Podcast Network, a man who knows more about Autobots, Decepticons, and questionable voice acting than Unicron knows about planetary snacking. Together, we'll dodge Decepticlones, collect Mini-Cons like they're Pokémon, and ponder why Optimus Prime never just took a vacation in the Amazon (hint: robot allergies). So buckle up, hit that triangle button to transform, and prepare for a journey through nostalgia, PS2 graphics, and more robot drama than a Cybertronian soap opera. Let's see if we can save the universe-or at least get through the jungle level without rage-quitting. Learn such things as: Why do you need to experience things for yourself and not rely on others to decide if you'll like a thing or not? Do you really need to see all of those great Transformers characters that you've come to love so much? Wouldn't it be fine to just have a few of them? How did Soundwave get into here and mess with Charles's audio? Especially because he doesn't even show up in Armada? And so much more! You can find Charles on the TransMissions Podcast Network which includes shows looking at the toys, the media, and even an actual play Transformers themed tabletop RPG game. Strap in, Earthlings! This episode blasts off into the out-of-this-world lore of Ashtar Sheran and his Ashtar Space Command. Is he an intergalactic protector warning humanity about its nuclear no-nos, or just another celestial scammer? From George Van Tassel's first “collect call” from the cosmos to the ever-evolving mission of spiritual ascension, we explore how Ashtar's messages have taken believers to new heights—sometimes literally. We'll probe (not that kind) the strange interruptions, failed prophecies, and how the movement dodged its own apocalyptic predictions faster than a UFO escaping a radar lock. Whether you're a skeptic, a starry-eyed believer, or just here for the space gossip, this episode is a wild ride through the galaxy of human imagination.

Today I talked to Marcia Bjornerud about Turning to Stone: Discovering the Subtle Wisdom of Rocks (Flatiron Books, 2024). Rocks are the record of our creative planet reinventing itself for four billion years. Nothing is ever lost, just transformed. Marcia Bjornerud's life as a geologist has coincided with an extraordinary period of discovery. From an insular girlhood in rural Wisconsin, she found her way to an unlikely career studying mountains in remote parts of the world. As one of few women in her field, she witnessed the shift in our understanding of the Earth, from solid object to an entity in a constant state of transformation. In the most tumultous times of her own life, a deep understanding of our rocky planet imbued her life with meaning. The lives of rocks are long and complex, spanning billions of years and yet shaping our own human lives in powerful, invisible ways. Sandstone that filters out pathogens creating underground oases in aquifers of clean water. Ecologite is “the chosen rock” whose formation keeps the planet running. Earth is not just a passive backdrop, or a source of resources to be mined, extracted, and carved out. Rocks are full of wisdom, but somewhere along the way many of us have forgotten how to hear it. When we are uncertain about where to find truth, a geocentric worldview reminds us that we are Earthlings, part of a planetary community where we can wisdom in the most unlikely places. Transforming healthcare through innovations in extreme environments.Humans operating in extreme environments often conduct their operations at the edges of the limits of human performance. Sometimes, they are required to push these limits to previously unattained levels. As a result, their margins for error in execution are much smaller than that found in the general public. These same small margins for error that impact execution may also impact risk, safety, health, and even survival. Thus, humans operating in extreme environments have a need for greater refinement in their preparation, training, fitness, and medical care. (Source: Optimizing human performance in extreme environments through precision medicine: From spaceflight to high-performance operations on Earth) This session discusses the latest developments in Space & Earth medical science and research with leaders in this specialist, exciting and critically important domain of humans in space. These are times that call on a radical belief in oneself and their community. Back in October just shortly before the US Election, I interviewed Rev. Dr. Andrew Wilkes about his book Plenty Good Room, which invites the Black Church to think beyond electon cycles and go to the root of how it can be a radical force in not just American politics, but the wellbeing of all of us as Earthlings.Yeah, timely. Unfortunately, because of the recent US Election and regime change, it took me a minute to prepare this episode for you, but it's here now and ready. Plus, my beloved partner Les Henderson joins me for a moment of reflection on faith and will be joining me in our next few episodes. Here's Rev. Adopting a vegan lifestyle can do more than improve your health and the planet—it can deepen your spiritual connection and clarity. Karen Hoyos, a transformational leader, speaker, and author, has embraced veganism not just as a diet, but as a profound way to align her actions with her purpose and values. On the NHA Health Science Podcast, hosted by Dr. Frank Sabatino, Karen shared how her 20 years as a vegan have been integral to her personal healing, spiritual growth, and transformational work with others. Healing Trauma to Find Purpose Karen's journey toward clarity and purpose began with a need to heal her own trauma. Growing up in Colombia, she witnessed domestic violence within her family, a cycle that left deep emotional scars. Moving to the United States as a young mother marked a turning point. Determined to leave behind the pain of her past, Karen sought out personal development and spiritual growth. Through mentors like Tony Robbins and her meditation teacher, she began addressing the roots of her trauma. “Until we heal our past, it manifests in our relationships, health, and even financial struggles,” Karen explains. Healing, she emphasizes, is about moving from victimhood to empowerment, understanding the unconscious patterns that perpetuate pain, and choosing to grow beyond them. Veganism as a Path to Alignment Karen's introduction to veganism came through her spiritual practice. Her meditation teacher emphasized the connection between diet and consciousness, opening Karen's eyes to how food impacts energy and clarity. After watching the documentary Earthlings, Karen committed fully to a plant-based lifestyle, driven by compassion for animals, concern for the planet, and her own spiritual alignment. For Karen, veganism represents congruence—living in alignment with her values. “You cannot hurt and do good at the same time,” she explains. This alignment has become the foundation of her transformational work, where she teaches others to live authentically by harmonizing their actions with their deeper purpose. In the journal Planetary and Space Science Dr. Kevin Cannon and his two coauthors analyze the potential of asteroid mining as a source of metals for manufacturing here on Earth as well as a repository of raw materials for space colonists. These authors find there are less precious metals in iron meteorites than was previous estimated. However there are a small number of precious metals whose concentration in asteroids is higher than any ores found on Earth. In the future Earthlings may be wearing jewelry made from asteroidal metals.

Resource Labs Network founding member, Lisa Ann Pinkerton of Earthlings 2.0 podcast, hosts a discussion with the DOE's Becca Jones-Albertus, Director of the DOE Solar Energy Technologies Office during the annual RE+ tradeshow to introduce the latest round of winners to our audience! Thank you, Lisa Ann, for leading this discussion on our live stage! Every year at RE+ (since 2019!) we have been honored to receive the newly-crowned winners of the Solar Prize, so Lisa Ann and Becca helped commemorate the 7th year of this competition from the Department of Energy which accelerates solar innovation, offering startups critical resources to bring their ideas to market. And the winners are…Fram Energy, a winner focused on expanding solar access to rental properties, presented a software solution that addresses the "split incentive" issue between landlords and tenants. Their platform allows landlords or third-party developers to install solar panels on rental buildings and sell the generated power to tenants, tapping into a vast, underserved market in clean energy.Gritt Robotics, the other Grand Prize winner, aims to streamline solar construction with robotics. Their approach automates labor-intensive tasks, like moving and installing solar panels, making solar deployments faster and more efficient. Using AI-powered robots, they enhance productivity and allow the human workforce to focus on complex tasks.Competitions like the American-Made Solar Prize are essential for the solar industry, helping innovative startups enter the market faster by providing vital resources, expert connections, and support through the American-Made Network. To learn more about Resource Labs and check out Lisa Ann's podcast at www.resourcelabs.co If you want to connect with today's guest, you'll find links to his contact info in the show notes on the blog at https://mysuncast.com/suncast-episodes/.Our Platinum Presenting Sponsor for SunCast is CPS America!SunCast is proudly supported by Trina Solar. You can learn more about all the sponsors who help make this show free for you at www.mysuncast.com/sponsors.Remember, you can always find resources, learn more about today's guest and explore recommendations, book links, and more than 730 other founder stories and startup advice at www.mysuncast.com.Subscribe to Valence, our weekly LinkedIn Newsletter, and learn the elements of compelling storytelling: https://www.linkedin.com/newsletters/valence-content-that-connects-7145928995363049472/You can connect with me, Nico Johnson, on:Twitter - https://www.twitter.com/nicomeoLinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/nickalusMentioned in this episode:CPS July 2024 V2

We did: wrasslin' animals and eating' bears, recalling Fords and Fords and DEIs and Toyotas and Fords and GMs and pickups and some junk in the trunk, as well as recalling a run from El Paso to Wisco in one of BFGoodrich's fleet of jacked-up Suburbans, and revisiting the Garage Hour rule that if you dig two holes in England (or Europe) there will be a skeleton or a bomb in at least one of them. There's also a Dude Food shout-out to liverwurst, a warning tear for DeWalt (what's trying to pull a Bud Light), and a serious discussion about how artificial reinsertion of apex predators into environments from which they've absconded (ie: Colorado's wolves, which are being eaten by cougars, and Italian bears, which are eating liberals). More goodies: cheap akiya homes in Japan, awesome actors in "Copland" and "Demolition Man", terrible flame throwing pinko battery deaths from scooters and other electric deathtraps worldwide, essential electronics repair and the necessity of having a wiring and circuitry guy in your stable, plus Sinister, Fishbone, Cheap Dates, Alien Faktor, U2 (really), Earthlings?, Desert Sessions, Butthole Surfers, L.S.G., Sausage, The Dead Elvi and Incubus.

As an incubator of life, Earth has a lot going for it, something we often fail to appreciate fully from within its nurturing bounds. Merely sending probes and rovers to the moon and Mars won't do. For various reasons — adventure! apocalypse! commerce! — we insist upon taking our corporeal selves off-world too. Multiple private companies have announced plans to put hotels in space soon. NASA is aiming to 3-D-print lunar neighborhoods within a couple of decades. And while it will probably take longer than that to build and populate an outpost on Mars, preparations are being made: This summer, four NASA crew members began a 378-day stay in simulated Martian housing at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. Here's some of what we know about how Earthlings fare beyond the safety of our home world. This story was recorded by Audm.
