Sorti en 1998 alors que la chanteuse n'avait que 16 ans, le morceau, écrit et produit par le génie suédois Max Martin, a eu l'effet d'un véritable raz-de-marée. Il a non seulement propulsé Britney Spears au rang de superstar internationale, mais a également marqué le grand retour de la pop adolescente à la fin des années 90, après une période dominée par le grunge et le rock alternatif. Ce succès phénoménal a logiquement inspiré de nombreux artistes, donnant lieu à des relectures dans des styles radicalement différents. Dès 1999, le groupe pop-rock écossais Travis en proposait une version live acoustique, suivi en 2005 par les New-Yorkais de Fountains of Wayne.
