Send us a textIn this episode James hits us up about testing and temptation. He talks about where it comes from and challenges us to stand firm, patiently, against it. He reminds us that God is not the tempter, but instead He is the source of all good. We finish in verse 18 with James declaring to us that God chose us and we are His prize possession. Join us as we discover how to overcome temptation and receive the "crown of life."Questions:Part 1 -What is the reward that James promises will come to those who patiently endure testing and temptation? Can you give or think of some honest temptations that you face? How do you endure those? How hard is it to be patient through the process? How should the promise of the reward mentioned in vs 12 motivate us in our Christian walk?Part 2 -How quickly when things get hard do we want to blame God? It's hard to admit that we have desires in our lives that are not always good. The bible refers to it as the flesh.Name some specific or difficulties that you have experienced that led to temptations in your own life? What are some examples of where sin being allowed to grow can lead to death? Part 3 -James tells us to not be misled on where our blessings come from. What is the danger in believing that the good in our lives come from us or something else? How can that change the way we see God? James says we are God's prized possessions. So often we struggle with identity and finding our place. How does it make you feel to know that we are God's most valuable possession? So valuable that he came to earth to die. Read John 3:1-16. James is now calling him “Lord” What do you think convinced James that Jesus, his crucified brother, is now his Lord and Messiah? As Christians, we are encouraged to view trials as a source of joy because that is how endurance grows, and through endurance we become “complete, needing nothing.” Can you think of any examples where you have seen this played out in your life or the lives of others?Part 2Have you ever thought about the fact that God doesn't get frustrated with your questions? When was the last time you went to God and asked Him for wisdom on something? We talked about some ways that we can build our faith.Take some time to share areas in your life where you see that God didn't fail you. When you think about that, what does it do to your faith in this moment?Part 3Money doesn't buy everything. What does that look like in our daily lives?Vs 6-7 - It's so tempting to put ourselves out there. To prove our value to the world. How difficult is it for you to wait on God to show your value? Are you committed to making their lives better? That's not easy! How can we become people who love big and lead others to the truth?Vs 9 - An invitation to someone's home, lets us know we wanted and accepted. Send us a textIn this episode of our study of 1st Peter, Peter talks about the value of suffering. The changes it makes in our focus and priorities. Join us as we dive into this heavy, and yet life-changing topic.Link to Facing the Giants, Death Crawl:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nbW3avTBK1gQuestions:Vs 1 - The topic of suffering is not a popular one. Jesus is supposed to fix our problems, not create them. How does Peter's statement conflict with your idea of Christianity?Vs 1 - Peter says that suffering gives us victory over our sin. What are some situations in your life where pain caused you to change?Vs 2 - Suffering and pain give us a different perspective on life. We hear stories of people who hit rock bottom and then become totally different people through their pain. How does suffering help us to become people who live for a greater purpose?Vs 3 - Peter tells us that the time already past is more than enough time for living in sin and then goes on to list some examples of this. God knows that our flesh has a desire for sinful nature. Why do we find ourselves wanting to buy more time to live in sin? For example “When I get older or after ______ happens, I will stop doing______ and I will fully live for God.” Why is this so often the posture of the heart? Vs 3 - Ask yourself: “Have I had enough of sinful living? Am I willing to put those things behind me?”Vs 4 - Do you stand out as someone who lives by a different standard? If so, how do you answer your friends when they pressure you, and make fun of you for not doing what you used to?Vs 4 - Peter calls them “former friends.” Have you had to walk away from some relationships because they oppose the new life in Christ that you are seeking? How was God faithful to you in that decision? How could you encourage others in that situation to let go of bad influences in their lives?Vs 5 - There are several things to consider in this verse. First is that everyone will face God, no one will escape giving an account for how we lived the life He gave us. This is a sobering thought for all of us.Second, we must consider whose opinion matters more, God's or our friends.Third, since our friends will face God for their lives as well, what is our responsibility in reaching them with the truth?Thank you for listening to the One Loud Voice podcast. Send us a textIn this episode we are going through verses 13-22 of 1 Peter chapter 3. Join us as we discuss the wisdom Peter offers about how we should live our lives as disciples of Jesus.Questions:Vs 14 - How do we handle being mistreated when we are in the right? Can we hold our tongue and let truth outlive a lie?Vs 15 - What is the story of your walk with the Lord? Are you prepared, are you willing, to share it if someone asks?Vs 16 - Humility and respect for others are the key in how people accept you and the words you speak. What are some examples of this?Vs 17-18 - Are you willing to identify with Jesus in suffering rejection and accusations for doing the right thing? What are some examples of this?Vs 19-20 - Some of us struggle with the violence and judgement we see in the Old Testament. How can a God of love act like this? These verses show us a picture of God's heart. That even in His judgement, His love remains. How do these verses reshape our image of God?Vs 21 - Peter uses the previous verses to explain baptism. What is the power of you and I seeing ourselves “dead” to sin, but “alive” to Christ?Vs 22 - Peter reminds us of the final score. Jesus faced many challenges in His earthly life. He pushed through those challenges to remain true to God and complete His purpose. How does His example encourage us to do the same?Self Refllect: How do I represent Jesus? Am I ready to share my faithwith others? Do the words that I speak, and the way that I livereflect a good picture of Jesus to the world around me?Thank you for listening to the One Loud Voice podcast. Send us a textIn this episode we are discussing Peter's challenge to take the high road in how we treat each other, especially other believers. Peter doesn't avoid the problems we face in relationships, he addresses them, and then gives us Godly wisdom for how we should respond. Join us as we discover how to "search for peace".Questions:Vs 8 - be united, care about what others are going through, love each other like family, don't be hardhearted, stay humbleWe all want to belong, to be valued, and to be loved. What values must our community have to make people feel wanted and safe? What should they experience? What shouldn't they?vs 9 - Peter says, don't treat people the way they treat you. Don't crush them with your words. Instead, do something to bless them. This is life in God's upside-down Kingdom. Treating people the way you want to be treated, not repaying them for the way they treated you. What are some examples of how we can return a blessing for evil?Vs 10-12 - Peter quotes Psalm 34:12-16To sum it up, Peter says - take the high road in how you choose to treat people because God is watching.Psalm 34:10 tells us that avoiding lies and speaking evil will cause us to live a happy life. How can speaking truth and kindness make a difference in your relationships and future?vs 11 tells us to “search for peace” What are some ways that you could search for a peaceful solution to a conflict with your parent, friend, or someone else?vs 12 - We all want God to hear and answer our prayers. How we treat others affects God's willingness to listen. This is a great time for you to reflect individually on how you treat the people closest to you. Take a few minutes to sit with your thoughts. Do you honor them? Are you honest? Are you quick with paybacks? Do you want what's best for them, or for you?Let the Holy Spirit lead you in how you need to respond.Thank you for listening to the One Loud Voice podcast. Send us a textIn this study of 1 Peter 3:1-7 Peter is discussing the way that husbands and wives should treat each others. Our discussion includes a lot of conversation about how single people can learn from these verses how to prepare to be the kind of husband or wife that will foster a strong, healthy marriage. We also discuss how the principals Peter describes apply to all of our relationships. Join us as we discover Godly wisdom for our most intimate relationships.Questions:Girls:vs 1-2 - Peter doesn't describe the perfect husband. He just got done talking about honoring bad leaders.Peter says showing your husband respect and living out God's commands is the same way Jesus changed the world.Whether you're a wife now, or you want to be, what are some concerns or challenges you have in showing respect to your husband?vs 3-6 - There is so much pressure on girls and women to look beautiful. Peter isn't saying don't put effort into your looks, he's saying - make your inward beauty your priority. What are some ways your character and inward beauty can reflect Jesus? What benefits are there in letting your life and example be the motivation for your husband/future husband to change rather than your words?Guys:Peter starts his words to us with “In the same way”, again pointing to the example of Jesusvs 7 - Peter describes the relationship we have with our wife/future wife as one of honor. Our culture likes to dehumanize women, making them a prize or a trophy. What are some examples of this in our culture? How should we treat women differently, with honor?Peter tells men to treat your wife with understanding. Not to bulldog our way with them.Again, what are some examples of this? Has this been modeled for you? How can we be intentional to change this in our lives?Peter describes wives as “equal partners in life”. You have the responsibility to lead, but not to dominate. How can we lead in ways that make it easy for our wife/future wife to follow? Finally, Peter tells us that being a jerk will hinder our prayers.Thank you for listening to the One Loud Voice podcast. Send us a textIn this episode we are covering 1 Peter 2:13-25. In these verses Peter describes to us how we should treat people in authority and why. This is both a challenging conversation and an empowering one as well, as we look into the impact we can make on others through our honor of the Lord.Link to Bible Project video: The Royal Priesthood, episode 6https://bibleproject.com/explore/vide...Link to Bible Project series on The Royal Priesthoodhttps://bibleproject.com/explore/cate...Questions for verses 13-17vs 13-14 - “For the Lord's sake, submit to all human authority”Submitting to people who treat us bad, is hard. Sometimes, however, we just don't want to do what we're told. Peter says - do it to honor the Lord. How do you handle authority figures, good or bad?vs 15 - God's desire is that we live with such honor that the things people say about us fall flat because there is no truth in them. When we hear that someone is talking about us, our minds race, thinking about the things we've said and done that could come out. Peter says - find freedom, live above that, live with honor.vs 16 - You're free and yet you're a slave? God's love set us free from our sin; but if our love for Him is sincere, then our commitment will be to live in honor to Himvs 17 - Respect, love, fear (used in the sense of honor & respect) These are things that build healthy relationships. In a culture that wants these things from others, but doesn't value these virtues for themselves, Peter calls us to set the example. What challenges do these verses present to you?Questions for verses 18-25Vs 18-19 - The word “slaves” in their culture would include “boss” in ours. How do you handle a bad boss, a bad professor, or coach?God is pleased when we endure unjust treatment. What are some situations that could apply to you?vs 20 - It's easy to justify our own mistakes. To want others to treat us according to our intentions, instead of our actions. There's no room to be upset with the results of our actions. What are some examples: late homework, forgot to call, lied about something, didn't show up for work or class, ect…How do you handle those situations? Do you own it?vs 21-25 - God is not asking us to do something He wouldn't, didn't do. Jesus is our example for all of this. Most of us are just trying to not get caught for what we're doing wrong. Are you willing to do good even if you have to suffer for it?What does Jesus' example inspire you to do?Thank you for listening to the One Loud Voice podcast. Peter tells us as followers of Jesus that we should be real. Love people the way we want to be loved! Can you think of someone who made a huge impact on you because their love was real? What can we learn from their example?vs 23-25 - Peter compares our temporary life on this earth, to our new life with God, that is eternal. How do you value things in your life that are temporary vs things that can't be replaced?Peter tells us that it was through “the living and enduring Word of God” that we were given this new life. What value should we place on God's Word?Questions part 2:Chapter 2 vs 1 - Peter tells us to get rid of all the wrong ways that we have lived and treated people. Be done with them! What are some new ways to act and treat people?vs 2 & 3 - Peter tells us to crave more of God's word because we've only tasted His kindness! We all know what it's like to taste something good when we are really hungry. It makes us want more! God wants to reveal more to us, He wants us to taste more of His goodness. Are you willing to spend time in His word to “grow into the full experience of your salvation”? (vs 2)Questions part 3:vs 4-5 - Peter paints a word picture of the temple, the place where God's presence dwells. But we are the stones that make the temple and inhabit God's presence. He also calls us priests, representatives of God to the world. This is a great time to watch the Bible Project video…What new ways of thinking about your purpose does this open up to you? How could God use you to share His goodness and presence with the world?vs 6-8 - Peter explains the role of Jesus as the cornerstone and foundation of our faith. He also explains how the Jewish leaders rejected Jesus and became offended.People in our day reject Jesus and are offended as well. Jesus is full of grace and love, but He is also full of truth. Not everyone wants the truth.vs 9-10 - God has called us out of darkness into light, and He shows us mercy. When the light comes on, we see things we didn't see. Show NotesMatthew 7:7-12 NASBJesus is saying that we need to put our trust and reliance in God for our lives and the things we need. This is a root issue. If we don't trust God, then we will take control to gain what we want and need by our own efforts. This is where things go south. Selfishness, greed, comparison, self preservation, desperation, fear, extreme need - all cause us to treat others wrongJesus references the law and the prophets: He reminds them of their history. This has all been spelled out and repeated, and broken, and forgotten before. This is an old problem. We struggle to treat people like we should - because we care more about our own needs, our own wants, and our own feelings.Micah 6:8 AMPSo how do we fulfill this commandment to treat others the way we want to be treated?Develop your relationship and trust in God a. This is best accomplished by developing a daily habit of study and prayerIdentify repeated habits of failure a. Show Notes:Matthew 5:14-16 NIVCity on a hill - a place of refuge and safetyLight in the room - helps you see what you are doingQ1: How important is it to have people in your life that help you make good decisions? Do you have an example of someone that has been a light to you? We often think of good works as things like: feeding the hungry or helping the homeless. We should do those things, but Jesus speaks of our day to day actions and character as good works.Matthew 5:17-44 Summary:Resolve your anger - work for restorationKeep your motives pure. Don't lust over people or thingsHonor your commitments and covenantsLet your yes be yes, and your no be no. Don't spin things to your advantageDon't bow up or take revenge, instead, be generous, go beyondLove your enemiesQ2: Based on verses 17-44, what are some examples you can think of to let your light shine? He ends his teaching with this: vs. 45that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.Jesus' teaching was radicalJesus flips the script - The religious leaders did good works to look good in front of others, and to earn God's approval. Jesus says: don't do good works to look good or earn God's approval (you already have His approval), do good works to lead others into a relationship w me.Q3: What is the difference between doing something to please someone, and doing something to earn their approval?Psalm 119:105 NLT - Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.2 things that keep us from being a lightSelfishness:Gen 3 - Adam and Eve chose what they wanted, they didn't consider how it would impact the world, their children, their futureMatthew 16:25 NLT - If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it.What does it look like to lay your life down - Jesus had compassion on the crowd even though he was hurting. Matthew 14:13-23Q4: Why is it important to have margin in your life?Pride:Matthew 10:32-33 NLT - “Everyone who acknowledges me publicly here on earth, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. 33But everyone who denies me here on earth, I will also deny before my Father in heaven.Q5: What are some ways that you can acknowledge Jesus in your life?Challenge: Read Matthew 5:14-45 every day and ask God to show you how to live these verses out in your day to day life.Additional study verses:John 15:81 Peter 2:12Proverbs 4:18Isaiah 58:8Isaiah 60:1-3Thank you for listening to the One Loud Voice podcast. Humility in our society is often viewed as a negative characteristic. We all like being around someone who is truly humble, but it isn't a New Year's resolution item that most of us make.Q1: What are some reasons you can think of that make people resist the idea of being humble?Q2: What does false humility look like?Q3: What does Biblical humility look like? Matthew 23:1-12 NLTVs 3: “So practice and obey whatever they tell you, but don't follow their example. For they don't practice what they teach.”We all like to be back seat drivers & stadium coaches - but we're not in the game. We're not sweating, getting hit, under pressure, trying but still making mistakes - but we think we could do it better. According to Jesus, that's pride. If you spend your time and energy, and focus your attention on “doing” what God has called you to do, it's going to be hard to get prideful. You won't have time or energy to worry about what others are/are not doingIf what you are “telling” others they need/should do is good advice for them, then it's GOOD advice for you!Thought: Why is it so much easier to point out how others should live, instead of living it ourselves?Q4: What actions can you/we make that could inspire others to pursue God or live a better life?Vs 4: “They crush people with unbearable religious demands and never lift a finger to ease the burden.”The children's rhyme: “Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” is a lie! Words are very powerful. Proverbs 18:21 NLT says: The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences. Our words carry weight. The things we say can hurt or help people. They can give someone the strength to pursue their dreams, or crush them and make them feel like they have nothing to offer.Thought: Have you ever been motivated to change by someone pointing out all your faults and making you feel like a loser? Why do we feel the need to do that?Q5: How can we redirect our words to inspire and encourage people instead of breaking them down?Final thought: The example we set for others through our actions, the motives of our heart, and the words we choose to speak, are the revealing truth of our humility or pride.Thank you for listening to the One Loud Voice podcast. Welcome to the One Loud Voice podcast. We are in a series on the 12 main teachings of Jesus. This week we are talking about Jesus' command of "Don't Worry". Join us as we talk about this important topic, discussing how to better navigate the temptation to worry.Show Notes:Matthew 6:25-34Worrying about our future or things going on in our lives is the result of not trusting God. In vs. 30 Jesus asks the question: "Why do you have so little faith?"How do we change that? How do we grow our faith to the point that it overpowers our temptations to worry?1. Pray - Philippians 4:6-72. Praise - Isaiah 61:33. Trust - Proverbs 3:5Read the book of Ruth. What are some things we can learn from this story about trusting God and overcoming worry?Questions to ask yourself or discuss in your group:1. What are some issues that we worry about?2. What are some circumstances that cause you to worry?3. Looking back at these issues and circumstances, what are some key reasons that worry overrides our faith? From the three things listed above (pray, praise, trust) ask yourself or discuss in your group:1. Do you identify worry in your life? What are some negative impacts that worry has on you?2. What are you listening to? What are you saying about your situation?3. What are some things you can do to help you trust God more?Isaiah 55:10-11There is power in the Word of God to help us overcome our greatest worries!1. Pray scripture2. Praise speaking out the Word3. Mark 11:22-24 NIVReading this scripture it would be easy to think that Jesus is offering us a ticket to Easy Street. We can send all of our problems into the sea; everything we want, we just ask and we get it. Q1: Does that idea line up with everything else that Jesus tells His disciples? What are some things he tells his disciples that don't agree with the Easy Street concept?Having faith is not about getting what you want, it's about following God and trusting Him to provide, to lead, to open doors, to fulfill His plan and purpose for your life. That doesn't mean we can't pray and ask God for things we need and want. Jesus tells us to pray for these things.Q2: What does it mean to “have faith”? What are some other things in life that we put faith in?Faith requires us to believe in someone outside of our 5 senses.Hebrews 11:1 NIVHebrews 11:3 NIVThe people listed in Hebrews 11 did just that, they believed in things they couldn't see.Hebrews 11:6 NIVQ3: Why is faith is essential to our relationship with God? Think about other relationships in your life, do they require faith as well?Jesus demonstrated faith, and pointed faith out, much more than He taught about it.Mark 11 - The fig treeMark 5 - Centurion/Woman w issueQ4: Does having faith mean that we don't deal with fear?Nehemiah 2:2-3 NIVNehemiah had to believe God:For the courage to approach the KingFor the confidence that he could rally the people to do the workFor protection against the people coming against themFor wisdom to see through the deception of his enemiesFor strength to complete the visionQ5: What things in your life do you need faith in God to overcome?Challenge:Pick 1 thing you struggle trusting God with and each day give it to God and ask him to give you strength to believe Him for the outcome.Thank you for listening to the One Loud Voice podcast. Episode 45 - Discussion NotesMatthew 22:37-40 NIVJesus declared, “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'e 38This is the first and greatest commandment. 39And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.'f 40All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” Q1: What are some obstacles or challenges you face in making God a priority?Foundation scripture: Matthew 6:33 NLT - Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. Q2: What is the Kingdom of God? Can you describe it?In any kingdom there is a culture/society: laws of the land, expected ways of conducting life, rights and privileges of citizens, be loyal to the king and kingdom or government.Discuss these 4 things:To seek the Kingdom above all else and to put God first means...You need to know what the Bible teaches. Q3: How well do you understand the Bible? You should conduct yourself in line with kingdom expectations. Q4: Do you know how God expects you to live? You should know your rights and privileges. Q5: Can you state one right or privilege you have as a believer besides salvation? You should be loyal to God. Q6: What does it mean to you to be loyal?**None of this is possible if you don't know what the Bible says and how to read it.We are strongly encouraging you to read/study the book: 30 Days to Understanding the Bible, by Max AndersYour group leaders have a copy of the bookThere is a link on our website to the Amazon bookstoreYou can also find the digital version on iBooks, or other book sitesThere's more: Jesus said: “love the Lord your God…” that requires relationship.Growing closer to God is just as much about relationship as it is being obedient to His commands.“Without relationship, you'll just have rules. Without obedience, you'll just have chaos and no real relationship at all.”Discuss:So putting God first means that we need to know Him and love Him. This includes:Understanding and learning about Him through the BibleSpending time with Him, getting to know His heart and allowing Him to craft oursLiving our lives in honor of Him and doing our best to represent Him well to the worldChallenge:This week set your alarm 10 minutes early for 3 days and read Matthew chapters 5,6 & 7, One chapter each day.
