Welcome back to the OSSB Podcast September 2022 edition. We are excited to introduce our new podcast crew this year. We will also meet two of our new teachers, catch up with events at the school and much more.

Thank you for tuning in to the end of the year extravaganza. We will listen to how our year ended up with many fun activities for the students and staff at the Ohio State School for the Blind. Our senior showcase is back and we will hear form all of our seniors this year. The run time for this episode is 1 hour and 35 minutes. The April edition of the OSSB podcast is packed with all kinds of exciting events that have happened at the Ohio State SChool for the Blind. We talk with a lot of our elementary students about the annual beeping egg hunt. Our staff student goalball game took place. The results from the 2022 Ohio Braille Challenge are in and we covered our awards ceremony that happened on April 28. We also look at what is coming up in May for our upper seniors and more. Our alumni focus this month is Mr. Rock Bazzle. He tells us of his time at OSSB and his current connection to our school. Rock is digitally mastering all the reel to reel recordings that were made and stored. In the February edition of the OSSB podcast, we continue to celebrate the importance of Braille. Humanware comes to town. We celebrate World Read Aloud day. This month we speak with Bret Frazy, graduate 1986. We finish off the podcast with a flourish as we honor black history month with a radio theater court room drama of Harriet Tubman on trial.

Students in Mrs. Fitchelman's class are working hard preparing and offering hotdog combo meals to our staff. Proceeds will benefit all student activity in that class this year and students gain valuable skills for working with the community. Emmie and Larry from the podcast team will bring you some fun and interesting facts about the month of September. Jonathan will tell us the calendar events for September and October. Dr. Amanda Pickeril joins the podcast team and gives us the lowdown on Social and Emotional Learning and how we are addressing SEL at OSSB. Ms McCumber's class is back at it again this year at coding. Her class will share what they are up to in the coding process. One of our new students Allen is doing something very interesting. Students traveled to Cincinnati to the Clovernook Center for the Blind to compete in the fourth annual Braille Challenge. Matt gives an overview of how the Polaroid Pop camera and app work. To honor black history month we join our wrestlers and cheerleaders in Little Rock, Arkansas when they visited Central High School. Matt talks with members of the student council about the valentines day dance that took place on February 13. The fourth grade class will continue learning experience with coding. They share with us “if then” statements. The November edition of the OSSB podcast is packed full of fun. We meet 2 new members of the OSSB family, our librarian and our transition coordinator. OSSB hosted the first ever Delta Gamma day on November 19 so we will meet them and hear from students at all grade levels about their experience on DG day. Want to eat better, especially when you need to be in a hurry, we join MS Honse and the ILS department on a field trip to Clean Eats where they tell us about cleaner alternatives and using a budget. President Edward Swilt of the OSSB alumni association talks with Mr. Kelley via phone and discusses the upcoming alumni holiday party on December 6-8. Our students in fourth grade under the instruction of MS McCumber are preparing for the future. They are learning to code. Jobs in coding are on the rise according to Fast Company. Mrs. Bardon takes us on a field trip to the Ohio Historical Connection so our students can realize different ways of presenting historical information. We are working on creating the history project of OSSB. Emily talks with MS. Salvagna and the catering department about pumpkin rolls and other delicious holiday treats. We are excited to bring you the October 2019 Edition of the OSSB Podcast. In this episode we will travel down to the Kentucky School for the Blind with the Elementary for the Bill Roby games that happened on October 3rd. Students in our ILS department bring us to Links Lemonade and talk about what they had to eat and how to use a budget to plan a meal. This month our health classes did some research on health organizations which have significant impact on our community. We will learn about Women’s International Center - Honoring, Encouraging, and Educating Women Around the World (WIC), the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and the World Health Organization. Each month we introduce a new staff member in our OSSB family and this month we meet our IEP coordinator Mrs. Welch. Our goalball team invited us to a practice and we catch up with some alumni from our championship team: Donald and Brandon. This month we will be talking about the preparations our track team has made to get ready for track conference which will be held at the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired. We meet our new fourth grade teacher and had a podcast discussion with the fourth grade class. This special edition of the OSSB podcast is all about our first summer camp. The Expanded Core Curriculum camp. Participants focus on 3 areas, independent living skills, technology and social skills. We will meet the campers, the staff, and follow the camp throughout the week.

The OSSB end of the year podcast is packed with tons of exciting events and activities. We talk with Mrs. Z’s class and catch up with hot diggety dog. Our principal Mr. Ransey stops in and recaps this school year. Emily shares her end of the year project. WE hear from students and staff about swimming and forensics conference. We visit our annual art festival put on by the elementary department. Girls on the Run was a huge success and Jana shares her story. Mr. Rheinhard, former principal, joins us during teacher appreciation week. Spanish students go shopping using shopping lists written in Spanish and eat a yummy Mexican lunch. We’ll hear about our first ever adult blind sports clinic held at OSSB. There were plenty of end of the year activities, the braille picnic, the ILS picnic, Bowling, a baseball game, track and field day and much more. Most importantly on this podcast, we talk with every senior who is graduating. Also alumni Chris Harington graduated from Ohio Dominican and he had the honor of being the senior speaker and we will share it here. Mr. Wagner shares the many successes of after school programming this year. WE conclude this month’s podcast with the end of the year rap. This rap has some special guests, so stay tuned. Corey grandstaff from the Washington School for the Blind, an alumnist of OSSB, talks to Mr. Kelley’s fifth period career class. Julia brings us the activities calendar for April and May. We begin our senior showcase by having seniors reflect on their time at OSSB and discuss their future plans. And it is prom season, so Emily sits down with Mrs. Parish to discuss plans for this years prom on May 9. We conclude this months podcast with coverage of the Walkathon where OSSB is helping to raise money for Partners in Conservation at the Columbus Zoo to provide aid for people and animals in Rwanda. This month on the podcast we travel to the CloverNook Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired in Cincinnati, Ohio to hear about the Braille Challenge. We listen to excerpts from the Little NC pep rally held on March 7. Our little NC squad traveled to the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired to compete in wrestling, cheerleading, swimming and goalball. We hear from Jeff Ransey who works in the Conservation department at the Columbus Zoo. And why does OSSB have a chocolate fair every year? Stay tuned and find out. You will hear information about the alumni reunion taking place on the OSSB campus the first weekend in June. We catch up with some alumni and see what they are up to these days and we talk about bell Camp happening here on campus in July put on by the Ohio Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind. Andre and Mrs. Smith visit the OSU College of Optometry and conduct an informative reach and teach activity. We look at some new technology coming on the market for the blind and visually impaired with a visit from Jim Sullivan from Humanware. He discusses the features of the new BrailleNote Touch Plus. 3d printing is becoming ever so much more popular and OSSB is using 3d-printing in the model club with help from experts from see3d. See3D is designed to connect people who enjoy 3D printing with their visually impaired neighbors. Low vision and blind individuals can request models to give new meaning to words that some students have never been able to understand. We conclude this month’s podcast with another listen-in on a reach and teach activity with our students and the O&M department. In the February 2019 edition of the OSSB podcast, we honor our own, Mr. Phil Northrop. He has dedicated 35 years to teaching students with visual impairments as an orientation and mobility instructor. Mr. Northrop retires February 28. We talk to some of OSSB student council representatives at our Valentine’s day dance. Mr. Lee brings us up to speed with Little NC wrestling and goalball. Mr. Sam Seabay, the main screen talent of the Blind Life on Youtube visits us. He is very interested in the models of historical monuments and places we have at OSSB. Welcome to the January edition of the OSSB Podcast. In this episode we will talk about new year’s resolutions, Mr. Kelley’s 8th period class shares their winter break. Andre will talk about Martin Luther King Jr. Students are working hard to get ready for the Braille Challenge at Clovernook on March 1. We celebrate Louis Braille’s birthday and World Braille Day. Cheerleaders and wrestlers travel to The Illinois School for the Visually Impaired in Jackson, Illinois for the NCASB championship. Noah Beckman joins us on the Alumni focus. Miss Honse is working with a class on planning and budgeting, so we will hear about their trip to Bob Evans. The after school programs has a lot to offer our students in fun and creative ways.
