Welcome to season 5 of Arkansas A.W.A.R.E.!This podcast segment discusses the Motivational Interviewing training offered by the Arkansas AWARE project. Motivational interviewing is a collaborative communication style used to help individuals find their own internal motivation for change, rather than giving them directives. The presenters demonstrate an example roleplay using Motivational Interviewing techniques with a teenager experiencing difficulties with friendships. The key aspects highlighted are:  allowing the individual to lead the conversation and identify their own solutions, reflecting back what is heard to show understanding, and guiding the individual towards action steps they feel ready to take. The presenters emphasize that Motivational Interviewing is a useful skill for educators, counselors, and others working with youth to help build their independence and autonomy.Join Betsy Kindall and Nicole Fairchild as they discuss issues related to mental health in education. Their conversations are witty and relate-able, simultaneously shedding light on issues that can sometimes be hard to confront or understand. Submission guidelines can be found at http://www.TallTaleTV.com   ---- About Tall Tale TV ---- Hi there! My name is Chris Herron and I'm an audiobook narrator. In 2015, I suffered from poor Type 1 diabetes control which lead me to become legally blind for almost a year. The doctors didn't give me much hope, predicting an 80% chance that I would never see again. But I refused to give up and changed my lifestyle drastically. Through sheer willpower (and an amazing eye surgeon) I beat the odds and regained my vision. During that difficult time, I couldn't read or write, which was devastating as they had always been a source of comfort for me since childhood. However, my wife took me to the local library where she read out the titles of audiobooks to me. I selected some of my favorite books, such as the Disc World series, Name of the Wind, Harry Potter, and more, and the audiobooks brought these stories to life in a way I had never experienced before. They helped me through the darkest period of my life and I fell in love with audiobooks. Once I regained my vision, I decided to pursue a career as an audiobook narrator instead of a writer. That's why I created Tall Tale TV, to support aspiring authors in the writing communities that I had grown to love before my ordeal. My goal was to help them promote their work by providing a promotional audio short story that showcases their writing skills to readers. They say the strongest form of advertising is word of mouth, so I offer a platform for readers to share these videos and help spread the word about these talented writers. Please consider sharing these stories with your friends and family to support these amazing authors. We never expect—much less want—to find ourselves caught up in abusive relationships or toxic dynamics such as trauma bonding or gaslighting. In fact, traumatic bonding, which involves abusive power and control coupled with cycles of intermittent reward and punishment, can create or worsen serious mental health issues including anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder. Sadly, many of those affected—largely women—become stuck in abusive relationships due to low self-worth, shame, and deep fears of stigmatization. Today, we're joined by trauma expert and former wife of The Wolf of Wall Street, Dr. Nadine Macaluso, who will be sharing her vast expertise on destructive relationships, narcissistic abuse, coercive control, and other emotionally manipulative behaviors. As Dr. Nadine notes, "In abusive relationships, we often forfeit the self for the sake of the relationship identity." Listener discretion is advised as this episode contains sensitive information related to trauma, abusive relationships, and abusive dynamics. Note: If you or someone you know needs immediate support, please call your emergency services. With only a few more weeks to go until Election Day, former President Trump made a campaign stop in New York, making his case to voters in the historically blue state. The Vice President Kamala Harris made an appearance in Michigan, being interviewed by Oprah Winfrey, and drew criticism for deflecting on questions about the economy and border security. Both campaigns continue visits to key swing states such as Pennsylvania, Arizona and North Carolina, as recent polling shows that the 2024 race may come down to the wire. Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY) joins the Rundown to discuss the President's recent visit to her home state, what she made of Vice President Harris' sit down with Oprah, and her take on the final months of the Biden administration. September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. In recent years, there has been an increased effort to destigmatize mental health issues and help those who are suffering. The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline was launched just over two years ago to assist those in need of professional assistance and who feel they could cause harm to themselves. Dr. Anita Everett is the Director of the Center for Mental Health Services within the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, or SAMSA.
