In this episode we welcome the excellent Gary Kemp to RBP's Hammersmith HQ and invite him to talk about Spandau Ballet, the New Romantics and Pink Floyd. After describing the pop baptism that was watching David Bowie sing 'Starman' on Top of the Pops, Gary recalls seeing the Sex Pistols at the Screen on the Green; the Bowie nights at Billy's; Steve Strange and the Blitz kids; and the formation of the band that became Spandau Ballet. With special reference to Betty Page's Sounds pieces on Spandau, we discuss the New Romantics and their complex relationship with the music press. From Spandau to Floyd is not a segue anyone would have made back in 1979, but Gary explains how he saw the half-century-old Dark Side of the Moon played live at Wembley's Empire Pool in 1974 and how he later joined forces with Floyd drummer Nick Mason in Saucerful of Secrets. In the course of a conversation about Dark Side, we hear clips from Jim Sullivan's 1997 phone interview with the late Rick Wright, who reflects on the state of Syd Barrett and his own (temporary) firing from Floyd. With a nod to Rockonteurs — Gary's own great podcast with Saucerful of Secrets bassist Guy Pratt — we pay tribute to the late David Crosby, who was the duo's guest in early 2020. Mark then talks us out with quotes from pieces about the Beatles (1966), the New York Dolls (1973) and Joni Mitchell at the Troubadour (1968 and 1973), after which Jasper concludes the episode with quotes from reviews of Björk's Homogenic (1997) and a Manchester "Gods of Rap" show starring Wu Tang Clan, De La Soul and Public Enemy... Many thanks to special guest Gary Kemp. Visit his website at garykemp.com and find the Rockonteurs at rockonteurs.com. Pieces discussed: A Manifesto for the Eighties, Spandau Ballet, the New Romantics, Rick Wright audio, Pink Floyd, Dark Side of the Moon, Nick Mason, The Byrds' David Crosby, A Hippy out of Hell, A Long Strange Trip, The New York Dolls, The Beatles, Joni Mitchell at the Troubadour in 1968 and then in 1973, Björk and Gods of Rap.

We lead off this edition of the BFG podcast with a discussion of Nobel Prize laureate Bob Dylan. That's the Literature Prize to you. Dylan has written a new book called Philosophy of Song, about songs he likes, and it's as inscrutable as the rest of his body of work. Book and Film Globe contributor Jim Sullivan joins host Neal Pollack to talk about his review of The Philosophy of Modern Song. And they make fun of rock critics as well as Dylan's somewhat purplish prose style. This might just be a joke that Dylan is playing on all of us.Halloween may be in the past, but vampire shows are still on TV. Scott Gold joins Neal Pollack to talk about Interview with the Vampire, a new adaptation of the classic Anne Rice novel. Scott admires the new setting in Jazz Age New Orleans, and finds the lead vampires dynamic and magnetic, but a bad casting decision of the orphan vampire Claudia brings the proceedings down a little.Just as biting is the Showtime adaptation of the classic Swedish vampire movie Let The Right One In. The setting is now America, and the girl vampire's caretaker is now her aging father. But the basic premise remains the same. Scott has good things to say about the show but is critical of some somewhat convenient plot choices. In non-vampire news, it's the Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions. Neal and Daniel Cohen go deep into the weeds of the TOC, talk about why some players are favored over others, and discuss efficacy of using flash cards to study for trivia competitions. If you're not ready, you're not going to win. Also, Neal laments the fact that they never ask any questions about Park Chan-Wook on the show.Enjoy our podcast, this week and every week!

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day
assiduous

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 5, 2022 1:53 Very Popular

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for September 5, 2022 is: assiduous • uh-SIJ-uh-wus • adjective Assiduous is a formal word that means “showing great care, attention, and effort.” // Thanks to the assiduous efforts of the local land trust over many years, a substantial amount of whip-poor-will habitat is now protected from economic development. See the entry > Examples: “No entombed Egyptian pharaoh has had the stunning and star-studded afterlife of King Tut…. It's all due to a stroke of good luck. Which would include an amazing dearth of tomb-pillaging, an intrepid archeologist and his team, plus meticulous documentation from National Geographic. Also, an assiduous PR campaign for various touring exhibits celebrating the life and possessions of the ‘boy king.'” — Jim Sullivan, WBUR.org (Boston, Massachusetts), 13 July 2022 Did you know? While assiduous means “showing great care, attention, and effort,” and in some situations may be an appropriate substitute for careful, it's got a bit more oomph than careful in that it suggests a dogged or tireless persistence. If you are assiduous in your efforts (or work, research, analysis, training, preparations, etc.) for example, it's implied that you're in it for the long haul, or that you have the ability to “sit with” a task or challenge for a considerable amount of time. This makes sense given that assiduous comes from the Latin verb assidēre, meaning “to sit beside.”

In this week's astonishing edition of the BFG podcast, editor Neal Pollack destroys passers-by and celebrates what looks to be a legendary summer of pop culture. First it's the Old Punks segment as Neal welcomes Jim Sullivan to talk about ‘Pistol,' Danny Boyle's terrific miniseries about the rise and fall of The Sex Pistols. Jim assures Neal that Malcolm McLaren, who he met in person, really was like that. And Johnny Rotten in the show may not look much like Johnny Rotten, but he sounds and acts like him, and that's good enough. Sod off, you wankers. Then it's Old Nerds on parade, as Rob Kutner and Scott Gold join Neal for a legendary ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi‘ round table. “It's a Chewie, not a chubby,” Rob says, establishing the high level of discourse right away. Everyone loves sad middle-aged Obi-Wan and everyone agrees that this iteration of Darth Vader is freaking terrifying. The men of BFG also manage to criticize Moses Ingram's portrayal of Reva, ‘The Third Sister,' without being racist, which is nice. And Scott closes with a joke about the bounty hunter Bossk that you must hear to believe. Finally, it's ‘Stranger Things' time. Neal is planning to write a ‘Stranger Things' article, but this season of Stranger Things is twice as long as The Ring Cycle, so it's taking him a while to get through. He and Chris Lites both like the goings-on in Hawkins, Indiana, with the monster fighting, and find all the side plots distracting and annoying.SMASH CUT TO AN EGG IN A FRYING PAN.No, that's just something that ‘Stranger Things' does for no reason…every scene. Jim Sullivan has had a fascinating career starting with the smallest, and quite possibly the mightiest, organism in the sea, phytoplankton. From doing ground-breaking scientific research, including anti-submarine warfare research, to inventing new oceanographic equipment to leading an oceanographic institute, Jim has had quite the diverse career. In this episode, Jim shares some amazing insights into marine science and the world in general, and he shares how he affected legislative changes that had some pretty big trickle down effects. We also chat about what true science really means, and why sometimes it can be really challenging to do. Jim also has one of the craziest sea stories I've ever heard, so stay tuned for that. This episode is brought to you by Florida Atlantic University's Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute. 2021 marks the 50th Anniversary of FAU Harbor Branch's relentless pursuit of Ocean Science for a Better World®. Located in Fort Pierce, Florida, FAU Harbor Branch's cutting-edge research focuses on five major areas: marine ecosystem conservation, aquaculture, the connection between ocean and human health, technological innovation and national defense. During my time at HB as part of the undergraduate Semester By the Sea program, I learned so much about the ocean and what it takes to become a good scientist. The programs and opportunities offered at FAU Harbor Branch have continued to swell since! Let's go ! Ultime)

On this week's episode, we talk to Jim Sullivan. Professor Sullivan is the Gilbert F. Schaefer College Professor of Economics at Notre Dame. He has been a visiting scholar at the National Poverty Center and a visiting professor at the University of Chicago, Harris School. His research examines the consumption, saving, and borrowing behavior of poor households, and how welfare and tax policy affects the well-being of the poor. In 2012, with fellow Notre Dame Professor William Evans, Professor Sullivan founded the Wilson Sheehan Lab for Economic Opportunities (LEO). LEO is a research center that works with service providers to identify effective and replicable solutions to reduce poverty in America. Our conversation discusses economics as a social engineering tool and we try to understand where does economics go right, where is it doing okay, and where can economics do better. It's reported that nearly 600,000 people are reported missing every year. That's over 1,600 a day. While many of those reports end up cancelled, too many don't and in some cases those loved ones are never heard from again.  Curator #135 was reminded of a missing person's case in his hometown of Livonia, MI in 1994 involving a 4-year-old boy named D'Wan Sims. The case has never been solved and the boy, never found. This inspired him to look into cases where someone known, in the public eye, goes missing. Listen to the stories of Barbara Newhall Follett, Jim Sullivan and John Brisker. Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/curator135)
