This month we're celebrating 7 years of FidelityConnects - and 7 years of Fidelity Founders Class - a core equity strategy with a large-cap, growth bias, focused on harnessing the entrepreneurial spirit of founder-led companies. And in a full circle moment, Founders Class portfolio manager Dan Kelley was our first guest on Connects! As we reflect on the past seven years, we've seen a dynamic macro environment reshape the way investors think, act and allocate. So how has the environment influenced the way founder-led companies are identified? And what continues to drive long-term conviction? Joining the show today are portfolio managers Dan Kelley and Tom Williams, for a look back - and forward - at how those shifts have impacted both the market and the fund. Recorded on April 23, 2025. At Fidelity, our mission is to build a better future for Canadian investors and help them stay ahead. A good school leader knows how to protect their staff from initiatives and fires they may need to put out on a regular basis. In many cases if you're unaware of everything your school administrator is dealing with, it means they're doing their job well. This lack of awareness of what happens behind-the-scenes may mean little appreciation for everything administrators are dealing with. While negative perceptions exist towards teachers and other school staff members as well, the public tends to be even more unforgiving towards those in leadership positions. Yet despite all the negativity, I'm optimistic. Part of that is because of the many conversations I've had with public sector leaders. When you remove the parts from the whole, and speak with the individuals who are part of the bigger system, it's easier to see past the politics and have an appreciation for the work being done. That's why I'm highlighting impactful clips from three past interviews focused on the struggles of school leaders, as well as what's possible when we put the right supports in place for students, teachers, and the people leading them. These interviews feature discussions on:✅The impact of social media on the perception of education, and shedding light on the “behind-the-scenes” challenges of principals. ✅The importance of positive adult role models in shaping kids' beliefs about what's ✅The power of K-12 education in creating life opportunities.  ✅Using meditation to decrease disciplinary write-ups and increase your own creative problem-solving.✅How to use the 85% rule to support your mental health and show up for your students. You can listen to the full interviews here along with guest bios:EP 114: Do school leaders need coaching? Today, we chat with Portfolio Manager Dan Kelley about founder-led companies and where he's seeing opportunities in areas of AI and innovation. He discusses Founders Class Fund, which focuses on companies whose founders are still deeply involved in its daily operations. Dan highlights the appeal of founder-led companies, including those in the "Mag 7," which are closely tied to secular trends. He also anticipates broader opportunities, particularly in cyclically driven companies that have been cautious until now. He adds despite concerns of an economic slowdown, he identifies opportunities in consumer cyclicals and financials, where many companies are currently undervalued and offer promising long-term growth. Dan explains his excitement for the potential of generative AI, seeing it as a transformative technology with the ability to revolutionize daily life. But he adds, the rapid growth in AI, could cause some instability in the long term. And while the fund is predominantly focused on U.S. companies, it does have some international exposure, including Canada. Recorded on August 13, 2024. It's essential to tap those we see as having leadership qualities  early and then give them small leadership opportunities.Leaders need to be very conscious of the language they are using around others so they do not discourage people from moving into the position. There is a critical need for a wider and increased range of people entering leadership roles.Successful change isn't always about “buy in”, but sometimes the readiness of those implementing the change.Grading is a transactional process that is used to control behavior rather than validate understanding. It's not our job to prepare students for bad practices happening at the next level. You need to spend extra time with veterans who have been practicing the same way for years.Work to meet teachers where they are by going to their classrooms and using different spaces than the main office.Stay in TouchWebsiteLinkedInDon't Forget to Review the Show!I appreciate you checking out the episodes. If the schools are devoting time and money to improving reading instruction, how should the rest of the day look for kids as it pertains to literacy? Should parents be working with kids at home? If so, how much? What about reading? Can we use apps to help build language skills? How about audiobooks? A common recommendation is that we should read 20 minutes a day, several times a week. I had a hard time nailing down a specific study that “proved” that this is an ideal amount, so where did this recommendation come from?I discuss answers to questions like this in episode 149 of De Facto Leaders.  In this episode, I share:✅Is listening to an audiobook the same as reading it in print, and will it make you a better reader? ✅If we can't agree on whether or not homework is beneficial, how can we figure out what kids should be doing outside the school day?✅Why do teachers often recommend reading 20 minutes a day, and why did this become the magic number? ✅Will encouraging a struggling reader to sit down with a book make them hate reading even more? In this episode, I mention Language Therapy Advance Foundations, my program that teaches language and literacy professionals a framework for language therapy that builds the skills kids need to benefit from core reading instruction. I also mentioned the following episodes of De Facto Leaders for discussions on project-based learning and improving the connection between home and school:Do school leaders need coaching (with Dan Kelley): https://drkarendudekbrannan.com/ep-114-do-school-leaders-need-coaching-with-dan-kelley/Cell phones, 1:1 device initiatives, and homework policies in K-12 Education (with Dr. John Burkey): https://drkarendudekbrannan.com/ep-139-cell-phones-11-device-initiatives-and-homework-policies-in-k-12-education-with-dr-john-burkey/Becoming a school founder and empowering students through project-based learning (with Tanya Sheckley): https://drkarendudekbrannan.com/ep-144-becoming-a-school-founder-and-empowering-students-through-project-based-learning-with-tanya-sheckley/

On today's show, we chat with Portfolio Manager Dan Kelley as he provides an overview of founder-led companies, outlining their differences, risks, and his own predictions for their growing evolution. Dan explains that a successful founder must have a long-term focus on the firm they are growing, be able to see beyond just the market numbers, and provide a unique service or product to customers to stand out. In the last couple of years, Dan says, we have been able to see founder-led companies get a full economic cycle, which included a secular low in interest rates and lots of fluid aspects and dispersion in returns. Dan particularly has invested in many founder-led sectors within the Russell 3000, with some of the biggest drivers in these sectors being healthcare and biotech. He mainly invests in public equities that are later in their development, and many of those relationships stem from his professional or personal circles. Not all of these companies are American in his portfolio, as 10% come from Canada or Europe. Dan believes that founder-led companies need to be adaptable and keep up with their ever-changing environment in order to maintain a consistent level of growth. He also discusses the process for selling the companies, what happens when a founder moves on from the company or passes away, and the role of AI for acquiring market share. A lot of professional development is still delivered in the lecture or workshop format, even though there's evidence that this model doesn't have a significant impact on student outcomes. So what do people working in K-12 education need to support students and have fulfilling careers? I started asking myself that question when I was working in the schools, and I stumbled upon the coaching industry. This led me to discover design-thinking, a process for solving problems and innovating; something I'd never heard of in my preservice training. Nowadays, people are more skeptical than ever about the scientific community. Many feel that the heavy focus on evidence-based practice ignores the human component that school professionals bring to the table. I see design-thinking as a way we can be evidence-based, innovative, and empathetic at the same time. That's why I invited Dan Kelley from DPK Solutions to episode 114 to share how he uses design-thinking to coach school leaders.Daniel P. Kelley is the veteran principal of Smithfield High School in Smithfield, RI. He is an educator, instructional leader, and innovator. Dan served as president of the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) during the 2017-2018 school year and was a member of the NASSP Board of Directors for five years. He has served as a high school assistant principal; a high school and middle school special education teacher; and a middle school math and science teacher. He was named the Rhode Island Secondary Principal of the Year in 2012.As a leader in education, Dan believes in challenging current instructional practices to provide creative and effective opportunities for students to learn, grow, and succeed. He is passionate about educational leadership that builds strong relationships with faculty and the community, utilizing social media to foster connections between educators, and establishing Personal Learning Networks for collaboration and professional development. In this episode Dan shares:✅Why your boss isn't always the best person to coach you, and where you can go to get the support you need.  ✅How to use design-thinking to keep students engaged and provide real-life, project-based experiences that prepare them for adulthood.✅What school staff need in a coach (and why it's different depending on your role and your career goals). You can connect with Dan on LinkedIn here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dpk933/ on Twitter here: https://twitter.com/danielpkelley and on his website here: https://twitter.com/danielpkelleyIn this episode, I mentioned my free online training for K-12 therapists who want to offer social and academic support that's evidence-based and neurodiversity-affirming. Episode 86: In both sports and politics, we have winners and we have losers. What we don't always have are gracious winners and losers. There were two recent examples. There was much debate about the interaction between star basketball players Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark during the NCAA women's championship. And after he lost by 11 points in the most expensive state supreme court race in U.S. history, Dan Kelley called his opponent a "serial liar" and her campaign "beneath contempt.” Hosts Richard Kyte and Scott Rada discuss the importance of good sportsmanship and why, unlike in politics, sports almost always rewards the people with the most skill. Last week the Biden Administration authorized airstrikes on reported Iranian strongholds in eastern Syria in retaliation for an earlier drone attack that left one American contractor and several others — including U.S. servicemembers — wounded. There have been at least 80 attacks on U.S. military personnel there since 2021 and they don't seem to be stopping. We talk to (Ret.) Army Lt. Col. Daniel Davis, who has been raising the same alarms and questions for several years now: why are we keeping our troops in harm's way in Syria? What is the strategy? On landing in Lisbon, they were enamored by everything: the history, the architecture, the people, the kindness, the international population. It was heaven for them. After a week in Lisbon, they traveled to Porto for a week - and although both fell in love with it, the climate was just too close to what they left behind in Portland. Dan shares how founder-led companies have excelled in the past couple of years, why their eccentric nature works, and how innovative companies have gotten us through the pandemic; they have rolled out new vaccines in a matter of months, improved our cloud and software technology to adapt to the home office life and more. He reflects on founders' personality types, tending to be eccentric risk-takers. With the right underlying skillset and vision, Dan believes embracing the founders' unique nature brings their companies to new heights and scales. He also discusses ESG and its growth potential, recognizing that more and more companies are becoming committed to reducing their carbon footprint. He believes that going forward, we will witness a huge shift in emissions, as energy sectors can be both powerful and committed to ESG. Recorded on November 9, 2021. With extensive research and support from the quantitative research team, Dan discovered that founder-led companies tended to be highly correlated with outperformance. Founders are large investors and owners of a business, so their interests are very aligned with shareholders.  He tries to find companies he believes can be the next large-cap or mega-cap when they are at the early stages of growth. He embraces more cyclical sectors and has shifted a little more to higher quality names from the higher beta names.  Recorded on June 22, 2021

There are around 700 companies in the U.S. that can be described as “founder-led” – over three times more than in any other country in the world – but Dan continues to look at increasing the international allocation of the Class, which is currently around 12–13%. He notes that founder-led companies are often incredibly innovative, flexible in adapting to different environments and typically “digital first.” A digital-first approach has helped as online business has accelerated, and founder-led companies also tend to be newer, so they don’t typically have a legacy bureaucracy and are able to pivot easily. There are about 300 companies in the S&P 500 Index that meet the criteria for being founder-led. Dan is less worried about growth vs. value, or about particular sectors, and is focusing instead on where the best options are to establish the direction of the Fund. Dan notes that Fidelity’s strength in research has allowed him to find opportunities all around the world, and being colleagues with portfolio managers Will Danoff and Joel Tillinghast has helped him get in on many founder-led companies early in their life cycle.  Recorded on July 29, 2020.

In this podcast, Dan Kelley, portfolio manager, Fidelity Investments, discusses how the opportunity of investing in founder-led companies has historically translated in higher returns. As a high school student, one of Dan Kelley's first jobs was working in a supermarket. At a young age he was interested in how businesses worked, how they were run. In high school he was inspired by legendary investor, Peter Lynch, after reading "One Up On Wall Street." Dan went on to work for two Wall Street powerhouses, as an analyst, until the opportunity to work at Fidelity Investments came along, in 2007, which fulfilled his long-time desire to work on the buy-side for one of the great investment management firms. Prior to joining Fidelity, Dan never imagined that he would one day be mentored by, and earn a place alongside investing greats Will Danoff and Joel Tillinghast, nor that he would have regular conversations with Peter Lynch. Dan Kelley manages Fidelity Founders Class Fund for Canadian investors. He also manages the Fidelity Trend Fund and the Fidelity Advisor Diversified Stock Fund for U.S. investors. TRANSCRIPT
