Wherever Jon May Roam, with National Corn Growers Association CEO Jon Doggett
The suicide rate among among farmers is three and a half times higher than the general population. It's a shocking statistic. We're losing good people, but we don't have to. From weather, to markets, to prices, to the issues that come with a family business, farmers face a number of stressors that are unique to their occupation. And in rural America, suicide rates increased 46% from 2000-2020, compared to 27.3% in metro areas, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. So one of the National Corn Growers Association action teams is working with partners across the industry to spread the message that saying something could mean everything. In this episode, two of those partners share their stories and their expertise. Jeff Ditzenberger is a former grower from southern Wisconsin who uses his past struggles with suicide to help other people today. He travels around the country delivering his outspoken message that, “It's okay to not be okay.” And Dr. Josie Rudolphi is an Associate Professor in the University of Illinois School of Agricultural and Biological Engineering with expertise in not only mental health, but its specific impacts in agricultural populations. If you or someone you know is struggling, please share one of these important resources we discuss in this episode: 988, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline 1-800-447-1985, The Iowa Concern Hotline, a resource serving the agricultural community nationwide FarmStress.org, a central clearinghouse for mental health and financial resources for American farmers TugsGroup.com, Jeff Ditzenberger's Wisconsin-based support group

Pearls - REDUCE-IT The Reduction of Cardiovascular Events with EPA-Intervention Trial (REDUCE-IT) trial was a large randomized controlled trial that showed a significant reduction in atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) events with use of icosapent ethyl ester in secondary prevention patients and high risk primary prevention patients with diabetes and residual elevated triglycerides between 135 to 499 mg/dL on top of maximally tolerated statin therapy1. Despite the use of high intensity statin therapy, considerable residual risk for future atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease exists in patients with ASCVD.Elevated triglycerides (TGs) are an important marker of increased residual ASCVD risk2.There are two primary types of Omega-3 fish oils: eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Omege-3 fish oils have been shown to lower triglyceride levels.Low-dose combination EPA and DHA has not exhibited incremental cardiovascular benefit in either primary prevention and secondary prevention patients on top of statin therapy3-5.REDUCE-IT showed the use of high dose EPA in patients with either ASCVD or DM and one additional risk factor, and relatively well-controlled LDL-C levels on maximally tolerated statin therapy and residual hypertriglyceridemia (TG 135-499 mg/dL) results in significant reductions in cardiovascular events over a median follow-up period of 4.9 years1. Show notes - REDUCE-IT Multiple epidemiologic and Mendelian randomization studies have established elevated triglyceride (TG) levels as an important risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular events6-8. However previous clinical trials using TG-lowering medication such as niacin, fibrates and low dose omega-3 fish oil have not shown to reduce cardiovascular events when added to statin therapy in patients with or without ASCVD,9,10.The JELIS trial first demonstrated a significant reduction in cardiovascular events when 1.8g daily of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) was added to low-intensity statin therapy in patients with ASCVD and hypercholesterolemia, However, the trial was limited due to open label design without placebo, use of low doses of background statin therapy, and geographic/demographic limitations to participants in Japan11.In a large international multicenter randomized controlled trial, the Reduction of Cardiovascular Events with Icosapent Ethyl–Intervention Trial (REDUCE-IT) randomized 8,179 patients with established atherosclerotic heart disease or diabetes and an additional risk factor, on maximally tolerated statin therapy, to 4 gm/day of icosapent ethyl (a highly purified and stable EPA ethyl ester) or miner...

This presentation will help to clear up common misconceptions about marijuana, particularly among young people. As marijuana becomes legal in more states, it is easy for families to misinterpret this to mean that it is safe for their teens. This is not the case. Marijuana is more harmful to teens than adults, can increase the risk for progression to a more severe substance use problem, and can lead to withdrawal when stopped. This information is not getting conveyed enough to our youth in this era of growing cultural acceptance. Learning Objectives: Understand that marijuana is particularly harmful to the developing brain of a teen Learn why teens are more susceptible to a progression in their use by using marijuana Understand that withdrawal can be part of stopping marijuana use, contrary to popular belief Presenters: Matthew Quinn, MA, LCPC, CADC Matthew Quinn provides community relations for Rosecrance Health Network in the western suburbs of Chicago in Cook, DuPage, Kane, and Kendall counties. Suchi Reddy is a poet of space. Long before I met Suchi, I fell in love with her work when I experienced the Connective Project in Prospect Park, Brooklyn, an installation of 7,000 glorious, yellow, flower-like pinwheels that filled me with happy. Years later when I met Suchi through our mutual friend, Stacy Fass, Suchi dropped the phrase form follows feeling into the conversation and right then and there I asked Suchi to be on the podcast. I needed to explore this idea and share it with you. Form follows feeling - a design ethos informed by neuroaesthetics (the study of how the brain responds to the design of our surroundings) - is the guiding design principle for Suchi and her firm, Reddymade Architecture and Design. This strong belief that good design, calibrated carefully to the human, positively influences wellbeing, creativity, and productivity informs all of Suchi's projects from conception to details. She believes in the power of joy and whimsy and making the invisible, visible. Suchi really made me think about my home space and my work space, and how important it is to ask myself how I want to feel in those places; that they are living and breathing, in order to support me every day. Suchi's curiosity and sense of possibility are inspiring as is her diverse range of work from the aforementioned Connective Project to Me + You, Suchi's interactive installation blending emotional AI, sculpture, physics, neuroscience and data technology at the Smithsonian, to the Google store in Manhattan to beautiful, serene residential spaces which I love to follow on her instagram. Suchi was appointed the Plym Distinguished Professor at the University of Illinois School of Architecture, Champaign–Urbana for the Fall 2019 semester, where her work focused on contemporary architectural experience through the lens of neuroaesthetics, neurophenomenology, and sensory design. She sits on the board of the Design Trust for Public Space, Storefront for Art and Architecture, and Madame Architect; and she is a member of the Dean's Board of Advisors at Detroit Mercy School of Architecture. We're a little late this week, but it's worth it, as we are able to report on a lengthy conversation that our (returning) guest, Dean Vik Amar of the University of Illinois School of Law, had with the Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Illinois Senator Dick Durbin, just hours before our podcast taping. He offered Vik and his students a truly inside look at the Supreme Court Confirmation Hearings just conducted, as well as his perspective on confirmations in general, and some truly surprising perspectives and possible ideas for reform - and now, our listeners have this early access to them.
Have you ever wondered how your attending on rounds or clinic preceptor reached their position in academia? Or perhaps you've pondered about what goes on behind the scenes of your simulated patient encounters? Maybe you've tutored medical students or led a dissection group before and are interested in exploring the deeper world of medical education. In this episode of the UnsCripted podcast, Mason sits down with the University of Cincinnati's very own Dr. Kelleher to expound upon the vast world of medical education and advise students about how they can further explore their interests in Med Ed. Dr. Matthew Kelleher is an internal medicine-pediatrics hospitalist at Cincinnati Children's Hospital and Medical Center and at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. Dr. Kelleher received his MD from the University of Illinois School of Medicine in 2010, where he graduated with AOA and Gold Humanism Honor Society distinction. He completed his Internal Medicine-Pediatrics residency training at the University of Cincinnati in 2014, where he also completed a chief year and earned a Master's in Medical Education in 2017. In addition to his roles as a hospitalist, he also serves as an Associate Program Director for the Internal Medicine residency program at the University of Cincinnati and as one of the Clinical Skills course directors for 1st and 2nd year medical students at the UC College of Medicine. In this episode, Dr. Kelleher elaborates on what the world of Med Ed looks like, describes the different roles of clinician educators/clerkship directors/program directors, and what his day-to-day life as a hospitalist and clinician educator entails. He also offers helpful advice to medical students who may want to explore their interests in medical education and how these students can continue this pursuit in residency and beyond.
