Barry Green is active as a bass soloist, recording artist, author and teacher. He has been directing bass camps and schools for over 44 years, and is founder and director of the Ohio State Bass Camp. Green has studied with the legendary bassist François Rabbath. Barry's most recent project includes a unique exercise program called Stringersize. Barry Green served as principal bassist of the Cincinnati Symphony for 28 years, the principal bassist of the California Symphony and Sun Valley Idaho Summer Symphony. As former executive director of the International Society of Bassists, he taught at the University of California–Santa Cruz for 22 years before moving back to Cincinnati in spring 2018. Green joined the Ohio State School of Music faculty in autumn 2018. The following year Green was named International touring artist to tour all the state capitals of Australia sponsored by the Australian String Teachers Association. In summer 2021, Green was awarded the Special Merit honor from the International Society of Bassists. In autumn 2021, Barry organized the Bass Club Cincinnati, sponsoring several clinics for bassists of all levels including an international public concert series. This highly talented ensemble consists of many fine musicians from the central Ohio area. On June 20, 2009, The American School Band Directors Association, Inc., presented Mr. Swearingen with the A. Austin Harding Award. This prestigious award is presented annually by the organization and is reflective of valuable and dedicated service to the school bands of America. In 2011, he received the Hall of Fame Award presented by the Ohio Chapter (Mu) of Phi Beta Mu. The OMEA Distinguished Service Award was presented to him at the 2014 OMEA Professional Development Conference. On April 21, 2015, The Ohio State School of Music honored Mr. Swearingen with their Distinguished Alumnus Award. That's what Brian Wagner has done through BounceBack Leadership. He is the founder and CEO of "A Radical Vision." His mission is to help people embrace their own personal blindness to achieve a greater focus and drive better performance. Brian has worked with boards and organizations to clear the path for growth.  On March 4 of 2011 he woke up on the couch and wasn't able to see. For the next six months, he was blind. Only brain surgery and multiple eye surgeries have allowed a portion of his vision to return. Welcome to another exciting edition of the OSSB podcast. This month our podcast team has compiled the latest and greatest of happenings at OSSB. Our alumni focus this month is Mr. Rock Bazzle. He tells us of his time at OSSB and his current connection to our school. Rock is digitally mastering all the reel to reel recordings that were made and stored. Welcome to the September edition of the OSSB podcast. We are so happy to share with you all the exciting events at the Ohio State School for the Blind. This month we welcome back Hot Diggety Dog Day. Students in Mrs. Fitchelman's class are working hard preparing and offering hotdog combo meals to our staff. Proceeds will benefit all student activity in that class this year and students gain valuable skills for working with the community. Emmie and Larry from the podcast team will bring you some fun and interesting facts about the month of September. Jonathan will tell us the calendar events for September and October. Dr. Amanda Pickeril joins the podcast team and gives us the lowdown on Social and Emotional Learning and how we are addressing SEL at OSSB. Ms McCumber's class is back at it again this year at coding. Her class will share what they are up to in the coding process. One of our new students Allen is doing something very interesting. James Swearengen has composed over 700 published works and is one of the most recognizable names in the wind band community. He joins me to discuss not only his music but also the story his early career as a band director and some of the wisdom he has acquired over a stellar career. Links: Jager: Esprit de Corps Nestico: Boys of Wexford Swearengen: Into the Joy of Spring Biography: James Swearingen’s talents as a performer, composer/arranger and educator include a background of extensive training and experience. He has earned degrees from Bowling Green State University and The Ohio State University. In recognition of distinguished contributions, Mr. Swearingen was recently accorded the title of Professor Emeritus from Capital University located in Columbus, Ohio. Prior to his appointment at Capital in 1987, he spent eighteen years teaching instrumental music in the public schools of central Ohio. His first teaching assignment took him to the community of Sunbury, Ohio. He then spent fourteen years as Director of Instrumental Music at Grove City High School, where his marching, concert, and jazz bands all received acclaim for their high standards of performing excellence. Mr. Swearingen currently serves as a staff arranger for the famed Ohio State University Marching Band. In addition to his arranging responsibilities, Mr. Swearingen manages to be very active as a guest conductor, adjudicator and educational clinician. Appearances have included trips throughout the United States, as well as Australia, Canada, Europe, Japan, Norway, the Republic of China and Singapore. School directors, student performers and audiences worldwide have enthusiastically received Mr. Swearingen’s numerous contributions for band. With over 650 published works, he has written band compositions and arrangements that reflect a variety of musical forms and styles. Many of his pieces, including 120 commissioned works, have been chosen for contest and festival lists. He is a recipient of several ASCAP awards for published compositions and in 1992 was selected as an Accomplished Graduate of the Fine and Performing Arts from Bowling Green State University. In March of 2000, he was invited to join The American Bandmasters Association, considered to be the most prestigious bandmaster organization in the world. Mr. Swearingen received the 2002 Community Music Educator Award given annually by the Columbus Symphony Orchestra. In that same year, he became conductor of the Grove City Community Winds. This highly talented ensemble consists of many fine musicians from the central Ohio area. On June 20, 2009, The American School Band Directors Association, Inc., presented Mr. Swearingen with the A. Austin Harding Award. This prestigious award is presented annually by the organization and is reflective of valuable and dedicated service to the school bands of America. In 2011, he received the Hall of Fame Award presented by the Ohio Chapter (Mu) of Phi Beta Mu. The OMEA Distinguished Service Award was presented to him at the 2014 OMEA Professional Development Conference. Later that year, he was presented the Signature Sinfonian Award by Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. On April 21, 2015, The Ohio State School of Music honored Mr. Swearingen with their Distinguished Alumnus Award. It should be noted that he is also a member of numerous professional and honorary organizations including NAfME, ASBDA, Phi Beta Mu and Pi Kappa Lambda. Students traveled to Cincinnati to the Clovernook Center for the Blind to compete in the fourth annual Braille Challenge. Matt gives an overview of how the Polaroid Pop camera and app work. To honor black history month we join our wrestlers and cheerleaders in Little Rock, Arkansas when they visited Central High School. Matt talks with members of the student council about the valentines day dance that took place on February 13. If you are interested in how our history book project is coming along, you will hear from Mr. Schwamburger and Claudia Retter who will give us an update and let you know how you can contribute to the project. The fourth grade class will continue learning experience with coding. They share with us “if then” statements. And we conclude this month’s podcast talking with a team of individuals from Humanware who were in town and stopped by OSSB for a visit. Welcome to the September edition of the OSSB Podcast. This month we will be talking about the preparations our track team has made to get ready for track conference which will be held at the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired. We meet our new fourth grade teacher and had a podcast discussion with the fourth grade class. For the first year Ohio State School for the Blind and the Ohio State University are collaborating to help up and coming teachers at the undergraduate level be better prepared to work in the field of vision. We are very excited to have had a visit from Captain John Turnbull. He is an active duty captain in the army who lost his eye sight in a terrorist attack. His story is captivating, and motivating. Emily gives us a glimpse into the catering program as they completed one of their first events this year. Thank you as always for being great listeners and supporting what the students are doing at the Ohio State School for the Blind.

In this edition of the OSSB podcast we welcome you back to school by meeting a few groups of students and hearing from our new principal Michelle Wagner. We meet the new podcast crew for the 2019-20 school year. We welcome Mr. Schwamburger, our new social studies teacher. In the coming months we will speak with all of our new staff. We speak with James from operations. A former student Selvin Linder shares memories of his time OSSB and what he is doing now. Kevin Maynus, Dr. Lou’s brother-in-law stops in for a visit and we had a great conversation. New school initiatives and projects are on the way as well. Mr. Jeff Schneider discusses what he does at OSSB and gives us many memories about the Ohio State School for the Blind Marching Panthers.

The month of December is a fabulous fun filled time at the Ohio State School for the Blind. On this episode of the podcast we will share many of these activities. Our ILS department prepared many tasty treats to exchange with one another. Our art classes visited an art museum to check out the work of Queen Brooks. Some of our students sang Christmas carols at Wesley Glen retirement home, and the Columbus Northern Lions club returns to host its 60th holiday party for elementary students. Andre composed and produced a holiday story about how the Evil Mr. Kelley tries to steal Christmas. Principal Ransey talks about the representation of OSSB at the state house. Can Andre devour the Thurmanater? We will see. Our alumni focus this month is the group Innervision. We meet another hard working OSSB staff member who works at the front desk and all over campus. And who doesn’t love a good pancake breakfast? We hope you enjoy this month’s edition of the OSSB podcast.

Our October OSSB podcast is packed with all kinds of exciting news and events that have taken place in and around the Ohio State School for the Blind. Our elementary students traveled to the Kentucky school for the blind for the Bill Roby track and field day. Nick and Perseus will share their memories of that day. October 7 OSSB students and staff participated in the 9th annual orthopedic spirit Sprint 5k to raise money to support student activities at ossb. Special thanks to Mrs. Parrish for all of her work making this event a huge success. https://runsignup.com/Race/OH/Columbus/SpiritSprint5K WE take a look at blind soccer with Katie Atkinson. This sport has been around since 1996 and debuted as a Paralympic game in Athens in 2004. https://www.usaba.org/sports/soccer-5-a-side/ We will meet more of our OSSB students this month. White cane day was filled with all kinds of excitement. We will meet Doug Payne. He works for Microsoft and is visually impaired himself. Our alumni focus this month is Alex Crawford. Alex graduated in 2017 and straight out of the gate of OSSB he will give us his prospective as a full-time student who also has a part-time job. Our goalball team is gearing up on the court for the ncasb championship in November. We cap off the month with some halloweenish activities. It is always fun to get a little candy and it is fun to retell a ghost story or 2.

Congratulations on making it to the end of another school year! The end of the year episode features Leah Bandman, a young teacher in Northern Virginia who just finished up her first year and agreed to talk about her experiences so far. Topics: Leah’s background growing up in Northern Virginia and going to school at Ohio State and the nature of her current teaching position. Unexpected challenges that Leah faced as a first year teacher. A look into the daily life of a first year music teacher including questions about unexpected challenges, materials, schedules, and classroom management. The importance of continuing to perform and play in ensembles as a teacher. Links: Bernstein: Overture to Candide Ohio State Flute Workshop Biography: Leah Bandman is a native of Springfield, Virginia. She attended Ohio State University where she received her Bachelors of Music Education degree in the spring of 2017. During her time at OSU, Leah was involved heavily in the flute studio and Sigma Alpha Iota, both of which she held leadership roles in and helped carry out major events on campus. These events included the Central Ohio Flute Association annual convention, OSU Flute Workshop, OSU High School Honor Band, and OSU Middle School Honor Band. For several years while at Ohio State University, Leah volunteered at the Ohio State School for the Blind giving private lessons and assisting with the only blind marching band in the world. At the end of her music education program, Leah student taught with Aaron Given in the Olentangy Local School District. Leah is currently a first year elementary school band director in Fairfax County Public Schools. Sharing time between three elementary schools, she is responsible for two of the programs, ranging from 70 to 110 students. She helps run elementary area honor bands, assists the middle school and high school programs by giving sectionals, and continues her playing while performing in local symphony orchestras and community bands.

Welcome to the End of the School Year Podcast at the Ohio State School for the Blind. Students really wanted to amp it up a little and do some exciting end of the year things for you, the listener. We talk with a few of our graduating seniors, We interview some new students who started OSSB during the 2017-18 school year. Mr. Kelley’s fifth period class will present their individual podcast articles complete with music and sound effects. We’ll hear about the catering programs at the school for the blind and the school for the deaf combine to put on a great lunch for Ohio educators. Andre and Latrell interviewed Mr. Kelley. And Principal Mr. Ransey, as you will hear, turned the tables on the podcast team when they wanted to interview him. The students who take ILS and Braille had a picnic and the podcast team was there to cover that event. Mr. Kelley presents alumni focus “360” and talks with Ryan Chandler, a recent grad of OSSB. We go behind the scenes at John Glen airport with the O&M staff and juniors and seniors. Stay tuned to the very end where the podcast team, including Mr. Kelley, does a little wrap, to wrap up the end of the year. You will hear all of the music we used this year we used in each podcast.
