Two cousins on opposite sites of the planet raised by Star Trek discuss random episodes of their favorite franchise, as well as other science fiction. Oh, and occasionally James Bond.
A Trek of the Clones is a podcast series where we compare and contrast Star Trek to Star Wars. So why are we talking about Spectre? Well once upon a time we were a James Bond podcast around every 7th episode, and for whatever reason, Spectre shares an incredible amount of similarity to Rise of Skywalker. Call it some kind of group think or a sign of the times. Next show we discuss the Rising of the Skywalker!
A Trek of the Clones is a podcast series where we compare and contrast Star Trek to Star Wars. This week, in preparation for our discussion on the JJ Abrams directed Rise of Skywalker, we dive deep into the JJ Abrams directed Star Trek Into Darkness! Featuring the great J J Abrams quiz where I quiz Drew on various factoids about Abrams produced movies and television shows! Next episode we will do a bonus show on the (still) most recent James Bond movie, Spectre! Why? Because it strangely does a lot of the same things as Rise of Skywalker. It even opens with text that mirrors the opening text of Rise of Skywalker, which is equally puzzling since James Bond movies do not typically begin with on screen text!
Here it is... yet another podcast about Star Wars! A Trek of the Clones is a podcast series where we compare and contrast Star Trek to Star Wars. This week we get into The Last Jedi, certainly the most divisive, the most discussed Star Wars certainly in recent history. Next show we will setup our discussion of Rise of Skywalker by trying, somehow, to solve the JJ Abrams problem by diving into Star Trek Into Darkness.
A Trek of the Clones is a podcast series where we compare and contrast Star Trek to Star Wars. I admit, matching a Star Trek movie and/or episode to The Last Jedi was difficult, certainly far more difficult than any other paring we've done in this series. We settled on Star Trek Picard because of the divisive nature of the Picard series, mixed with the experience of seeing our beloved franchise icon at a later more cynical stage in life. I wish I had more positive things to say about Picard, but this series was a disappointment. We will get into it during the podcast, but I am at a loss as to how you could make a spin off of The Next Generation and aspire to suck all of the joy out of that series. Star Trek Picard is not a pleasurable viewing. Whereas The Force Awakens probably tries too hard to re-capture the feel of the original Star Wars, this show tries too hard to subvert everything we love about TNG. I hope future writers take care to not use darkness in the place of substance, or think torture porn and revenge plot lines count as superior character studies. Next podcast will cover The Last Jedi!
A Trek of the Clones is a podcast series where we compare and contrast Star Trek to Star Wars. Today, we try to make sense of The Force Awakens and... mostly succeed? Well, I'll make like Abrams and let you make your own conclusions as to whether or not we did! I think it is fair to say that trying to unravel a mystery box is hard, and that it is made harder when there is not in fact anything within said box. We give this movie it's due. Look forward to our next show where we prepare for our discussion on the controversial Last Jedi by discussing the controversial Star Trek Picard, covering the first two episodes of that series.
A Trek of the Clones is a podcast mini series where we compare and contrast Star Trek to Star Wars. This week, we tackle the debate over whether Rey is a Mary Sue, and in order to do so, we thought we'd start with an episode about Star Trek's own Mary Sue*, Wesley Crusher! This podcast episode focuses primarily on The Next Generation's season 1 episode "Where No One Has Gone Before" but we cover a couple of other notable Wesley appearances. *Fun fact that the term Mary Sue actually originated with Star Trek fan fiction, which we discuss in the episode! Next episode we will dive deep on The Force Awakens!
A Trek of the Clones is a podcast series where we compare and contrast Star Trek to Star Wars. Last week we did Trouble With Tribbles! This week we do Issues With Ewoks. (Sorry, it's the best Google synonym could do for me.) Which cuddly creatures did better at embedding themselves into our subconscious? And just how is it this movie went from our most favorite, to our most hated, to whatever it is now? Next week (-ish) we'll be starting our coverage of the Disney trilogy, and to prepare for us to talk about The Force Awakens, we decided to tackle the question of whether or not Rey is a Mary Sue by pulling Star Trek's proto example, Wesley Crusher! And yes I resent the gendered nature of this discussion but it is a part of the discourse so we're taking a careful step into the discussion without trying to be toxic. So we will be covering The Next Generation's season 1 classic, "Where No One Has Gone Before"!
A Trek of the Clones is a podcast series where we compare and contrast Star Trek to Star Wars. This week we setup Return of the Jedi by introducing Star Trek's own cuddly annoyances, the Tribbles. We talk about things like storage compartments, the nature of cute in the world of space fiction, and figure out just what the heck the Klingins are doing on this station. (Typo is intentional.) Next week we cover Return of the Jedi in all it's glory! Stay tuned!
A Trek of the Clones is a podcast series where we compare and contrast Star Trek to Star Wars. This, this is the big one. Greatest Star Wars movie maybe? Greatest movie perhaps? No movie has quite the highs and lows. We go deep on our VHS memories of this film, as well as few puzzling ancillary memories! Following this up, we will be comparing and contrasting each series classic prolific furry creatures, covering the season 2 Original Series classic "The Trouble With Tribbles"
A bonus release timed for the US election. Meant to be seen as topical, we went off on a bunch of tangents but I think we hit some relevant points. Work on our Empire Strikes Back podcast continues and should be complete by next weekend!
A Trek of the Clones is an ongoing podcast series where we compare and contrast Star Trek to Star Wars. For this set, we are lining up iconic sequels. Iconic endings. Iconic methods by which we write important characters out of the series in a way that leaves the possibility of them coming back. We poke a lot of fun at Wrath of Khan, but it's all in good spirit. Look forward to our show covering Empire Strikes Back, coming soon!
A Trek of the Clones is a podcast series where we compare and contrast Star Trek to Star Wars. And now, the movie to end all movies. The movie formerly known as simply, Star Wars. What else could be said about Star Wars that hasn't been said in countless other podcasts? I'm guessing, not much really, but we give it our best slingshot around the sun effort! Next week we are comparing sequels to sequels, so look forward to our show covering Star Trek 2 : The Wrath of Khan!
A Trek of the Clones is a podcast mini series where we compare and contrast Star Trek to Star Wars. From one planet killer to another. This is the episode where Kirk faces off against some kind of Doomsday Machine, it's origins unknown, possibly built a long time ago in a galaxy far far away. This is a thrilling episode. If you have not been doing so already, I highly recommend watching this before listening. Did you ever wonder where the name Decker comes from? Ever wonder how you command a Starship remotely? Next week we discuss the classic movie known as Star Wars! Or, known to more modern fans as Star Wars Episode IV, A New Hope.
A Trek of the Clones is a Podcast series where we compare and contrast Star Trek to Star Wars. This week covers Rogue One. Maybe the best of the Disney Star Wars movies? Certainly emerging as one of the most well regarded! We dig deep, have a few laughs, and play music from the Star Wars Dark Forces video game, the former story of how the Death Star plans were stolen. Next week we discuss Star Trek The Original Series season 2 classic, Doomsday Machine.
A Trek of the Clones is a podcast series where we compare and contrast Star Trek to Star Wars. This week's show takes us into Yesterday's Enterprise, our pairing for Rogue One! What's the connection? Well both feature a band of heroes sacrificing their lives in order to make a more hopeful future and/or present, or more to the point to ensure canon plays out as written. Featuring war, battle stations and battle logs, this episode serves as an alternate take on a TNG that could be. We wonder aloud, could this have been a better show, or was it better left as this quick glimpse at a TNG with grittier plotlines, more dramatic lighting, crowded corridors, and a Picard Riker relationship that is antagonistic. Next week we cover Rogue One! The best Disney Star Wars film? Maybe?
A Trek of the Clones is a series dedicated to comparing and contrasting Star Trek to Star Wars. Now imagine if you will, a Star Wars movie came out and it wasn't that big a deal. That's what things were like when Solo came out. Not as great as maybe we would have liked, but not as terrible as we were led to believe it'd be. We go deep on why it works, and simultaneously why it doesn't. Also, was it just me, your humble description writer who found this movie really difficult to look at? Next show we will be covering The Next Generation's "Yesterday's Enterprise" as we compare and contrast it with Rogue One.
A long time ago in a film studio somewhere in the LA area, someone tried to create a Han Solo rogue like figure for the Star Trek universe. The result was, well, this, a man with a similar vest to Han Solo, and a propensity for wisecracks of an almost funny style. Along the way, Data tries to learn comedy, asking the holodeck to give us the 20th Century's best comic, then deciding to consult Joe Piscopo instead. Set your phasers for Pun!
A sith, podcast?! A Trek of the Clones is a series where we compare and contrast Star Trek to Star Wars. And say it isn't so! We've reached the end of our first trilogy! Generally considered to be the least bad Star Wars prequel, we go deep on the hows and whys of Anakin's turn to the dark side, and of those precious few minutes where Darth Vader was just some regular looking guy not walking around in a full body suit and mask. Our series continues on with the anthology films as follows; Part 7 : The Outrageous Okana (TNG) Part 8 : Solo (Star Wars) Part 9 : Yesterday's Enterprise (TNG) Part 10 : Rogue One (Star Wars)
With the start of the baseball season (finally) underway, we thought we'd do a little bonus episode about the Deep Space Nine season 7 classic Take Me Out To The Holosuite. As mentioned off the top, this was recorded before any of this Covid stuff went down and so we don't make any of the obvious jokes about empty stands. Just grab a cold one and enjoy!
Walk long enough you will eventually live to see yourself. Picard discovers that in the near future, something terrible will happen and proceeds to, well, talk about it for about 20 minutes of run time before picking up the action again. Paired with Revenge of the Sith which features Anakin Skywalker seeing a similar vision of a grim future, (and probably a better act 2) we continue to compare and contrast Star Trek to Star Wars! Next week it's a volcano of a show, as we go deep on Revenge of the Sith, known widely as the least bad Star Wars prequel!
In case that title was confusing, YES, this is a podcast about Star Wars episode 2, Attack of the Clones! At best we are trying to compare and contrast it to Star Trek. At worst, we're just trying to avoid making fun of it too much. Yes, it's an easy movie to dump on, but let's try to be nice to this innocent little movie okay? Next week we tackle an episode from the second season of The Next Generation, Time Squared, dealing with premonition of terrible things to come, which was a significant part of Anakin's turn to the dark side even if it was never brought up again in Star Wars!
For Attack of the Clones, we've paired it with the TOS season 1 classic (at least according to this otherwise impartial notes writer) Charlie X! Hope you enjoy! Attack of the Clones is next week!
Here it is! Finally, a podcast about Star Wars! We go deep on the how, the why, the what George Lucas was thinking... what we were thinking! What we were expecting! Everyone's got a take on Phantom Menace, now here's ours! Next episode will discuss Star Trek The Original Series episode entitled Charlie X
Here it is at last, our first part in our 22 part series where we compare and contrast Star Trek to Star Wars! Beginning with this, where we compare prequel to prequel! Enterprise's 2 hour premiere Broken Bow! Future episodes will be as follows; Part 2 : The Phantom Menace Part 3 : Charlie X (TOS) Part 4 : Attack of the Clones Part 5 : Time Square (TNG) Part 6 : Revenge of the Sith
Since we're all cooped up watching Star Trek and playing countless video games, why not watch along with us as we lovingly make fun of TNG's The Game! Just sync up your DVD or Blu Ray or Netflix copy and listen along! Sorry about the audio quality... we kind of threw these together on the fly shortly before everything got locked up!
Rounding out our series of shows where we just focus on episodes that are just fun, we come to Tinker Tenor Doctor Spy! This was a gem, and I hope it was a gem of a podcast! We also manage to sneak in a discussion on serialized vs episodic television. Following this, we embark upon the big one. Our massive Star Wars retrospective, where we discuss each Star Wars movie, going in chronological order, paired with one Star Trek. Our schedule is still being worked out but our next four shows should be as follows. 1. Broken Bow (ENT) 2. Star Wars Episode 1 : The Phantom Menace 3. Charlie X (TOS) 4. Star Wars Episode 2 : Attack of the Clones
Hey guys! We had a show for Take Me Out to the Holosuite prepared, even had it in the can but due to the delay in the MLB season, we thought we'd hold it back until baseballs triumphant return (along with the rest of day to day life) and so for those bored in self quarantine, this is for you! Just load up Rascals on Netflix or wherever you find Trek and listen along as we make fun of this highly underrated episode that might finally be properly rated!
There's a conspiracy afoot, and it's up to Picard to stop it. In an episode that should have tons to say about the world we live in today, we instead get a story of paranoia that gets validated by the existence of space parasites. Next week in honour of the return of baseball (we hope) we cover Deep Space Nine's season 7 classic, Take Me Out to the Holosuite!
In an episode that crosses The Matrix with Dogville and whatever movies feature Doc Holliday, Spectre of the Gun is a rare season 3 TOS gem where the limits of budget and production inspire something great. We will continue to run a cycle through the various Trek series and cover TNG's Conspiracy next, followed by DS9's Take Me Out to the Holosuite.
Finishing our comprehensive Borg retrospective, this prequel to the Original Series, yet sequel to First Contact, maybe more of a inter-quel to all of Star Trek? Whatever it is, this show we dive deep into Enterprise, it's re-centering of the Borg as a menace to be feared, then veer off into all sorts of topics that I thought were equally interesting. Give it a listen! Following this we shall be doing a cycle of one off shows where we discuss an episode of each Star Trek in order. Running order for now is follows; TOS - Spectre of the Gun TNG - Conspiracy DS9 - Take Me Out To The Holosuite
Managing to be relatively Avengers joke free, we complete our Voyager Borg coverage but not our Borg coverage with Voyager's finale, Endgame. Surprisingly, not as much a Borg heavy show as the others, it's here mainly because it caps the Borg storyline at least for the foreseeable future, not counting the Enterprise prequel. Speaking of which, our next show will cover that Enterprise episode, Regeneration.
Not to be confused with The Matrix from 1999, although the similarities are rather striking, (Isn't the name a little obvious guys?) this episode takes us deep into a computer reality where Borg droves from around the universe can meet and interact as individuals while 7 of 9 falls in love! Out of all of Voyager's cliffhangers, this is definitely one of them.
We are back to covering the Borg! Also back is the Borg queen, albeit in a slightly different skin and we mean that literally, and figuratively. Unimatrix Zero part 1 and 2 is the next show we will be covering!
This never happened to the other podcast... Out of all the George Lazenby starring Bond movies, this is definitely the only one. It's a movie I alternate between loving and not loving, and this time it surprised me if only because I finally did it after (slowly) reading the original novel. We do the quiz again where I ask Drew about scenes or clips in the movie and ask if he thinks they happened in the book! Next week we go back to Star Trek and discuss the Voyager season 5 classic "Dark Frontier".
As promised, just in time for your Christmas commutes, our coverage on the holiday classic (at least in our eyes) Arthur Christmas! We had to scramble to save this podcast (and in the process, Christmas itself) so we have to do a rare live to edit recording, so this one is hot off the press. Apology to the younglings, there may be one swear word still in there. Next show will be covering James Bond's classic 1969 (now 50 years old) On Her Majesty's Secret Service!
Continuing our Borg retrospective, we cover the Voyager 2 parter "Scorpion". Next week we will do our inaugural Christmas themed episode, covering the Christmas classic Arthur Christmas. After that it'll be James Bond time again as we cover "On Her Majesty's Secret Service".
What's this? A non TNG episode? Yes, our Borg retrospective has moved on to Voyager! As Borg shows go, this one was a huge surprise, forgoeing big action and suspense and instead focusing on a community trying to re-gain something they've lost. We also, sigh, yes, make fun of Chakotay again. Our next show will cover the Voyager two parter Scorpion, and then we move onto a Christmas themed episode, covering the classic animated tale of "Arthur Christmas', followed by another James Bond retrospective, covering On Her Majesty's Secret Service!
Here it is! The podcast you have all been waiting for! That's First Contact the movie! Our Borg retrospective will continue with Voyager's Unity, and then the cliffhanger two parter, Scorpion, done as a single podcast show. We will then proceed to do our Christmas themed show based on the all time Christmas classic (or at least we hope it to some day become), Arthur Christmas! Then it's time for another James Bond series entry as we tackle the ever divisive On Her Majesty's Secret Service!
A two parter about the Borg that rather suddenly starts becoming about Data's evil twin brother and maybe isn't about the Borg at all anymore. A weird two parter with a lot of padding but the good news is, we've condensed our recap and discussion into a single podcast episode. Enjoy! Our Borg retrospective will continue with the feature film Star Trek First Contact, than we will move away from TNG (finally) and discuss Voyager's "Unity".
Following up the whizz bang two part cliffhanger of Best of Both Worlds with this, a low key but effective morality play depicted by one the greatests casts on TV. This episode is a personal favorite of mine and I'm also rather proud of this podcast. Next week we cover The Next Generation's Descent Parts 1 and 2 together.
I know I promised I, Borg this time last week, but hey, if James Bond can promise a specific movie than deliver another, than I can do so with the podcast! It's a number divisible by 7, and that means it's time for James Bond, covering the slightly underrated Living Daylights! Most definitely the most James Bond-ish of Timothy Dalton movies, maybe one of the least James Bond-ish of Bond movies nonetheless.
Sorry for the delay, but I hope it was worth it! Covering the first two Terminator movies, the only ones that count (except for maybe Dark Fate?) Following this we finally resume our Star Trek coverage, returning to our Borg retrospective starting with I, Borg from TNG's season 5, and then we will cover parts 1 and 2 of the Descent season cliffhanger as a single podcast.
This was a fun show! Coming in just in the nick of time for Halloween, is our podcast about the movie Alien and you know what, we enjoyed it so much we may just go ahead and do the whole series, which may or may not include the Predator movies. Next week we'll be doing another non Trek, (and another non Trek after that as it's the 7th show again and time for James Bond) and covering Terminator and Terminator 2, trying (futily) to sort out the time travel minutia.
It's nearly Halloween and what self respecting podcast couldn't resist the urge to do one or two horror themed shows? For this, we've found what is a deep dive into the nature of fear and find some, well, interesting conclusions being made. We're not sure we agree with what the show is saying, but that's okay. Note : This was recorded while Drew was still in Taiwan and we had some issues hearing each other, so please forgive some of the instances of us talking over each other. This editor did his best to unravel a lot of it but sometimes it still sounds a bit odd.
And now the conclusion! Will planet earth be saved? (Of course it will.) Will Picard be saved from the Borg collective? (Of course he will.) Will we see a massive shift from the status quo? (Of course we won't.) Will Mark and Drew take the piss out of it? (Of course!) Following this, our Borg retrospective will take a short break as we cover some good old fashioned Hallowe'en horror. Next week we get into Voyager's "The Thaw", followed by the original Ridley Scott Alien. Then, just in time for the release of Terminator Dark Fate, we spend nearly two hours discussing the first two Terminator movies!
Considered by many to be one the greatest Star Trek TNG shows! We will be covering part 2 next week and then our Borg retrospective will take a little break as we dive into some horror and Terminator stuff. Schedule moving forward is as follows. October 14 : The Best of Both Worlds Part 2 October 21 : Horror Trek! The Thaw (VOY) October 28 : Horror Film! Alien (Movies) November 4 : Terminator and Terminator 2! Timed for release at the same time as Terminator Dark Fate.
Here it is, as promised! Q Who! The very (not) aptly named debut episode of the Borg! Look forward to next week where we continue our deep dive into the Borg with the first part, and only the first part of The Best of Both Worlds!
It's been 7 shows and that means it's time to pick apart a Bond film! Chosen semi randomly (and by that I mean not at all), we point our cross hairs on The Man With The Golden Gun, a movie that is most certainly a Bond film! Hear it all from a couple of guys who've actually been to a couple of the places shown in this movie! Following this we will be going back to Star Trek with the start of our Borg retrospective, beginning quite appropriately with The Next Generation's season 2 episode, "Q Who"!
A show where we talk about family companies, about profit and also the designated hitter rule. We go all over the place, but it's most grounded in Star Trek! Tis the end of our Ferengi retrospective. We could maybe do more but we think we got the gist of what those stories did. Following this our running order is as follows; Sept 20th - The Man With the Golden Gun (James Bond) Sept 27th - Q Who (TNG) Oct 4th - The Best of Both Worlds Part 1 (TNG) Oct 11th - The Best of Both Worlds Part 2 (TNG) Oct 18th - Halloween Special : The Thaw (VOY) Oct 25th - Halloween Special : Alien (Movies) Nov 4th - The Terminator Films (Mainly the first two, cause that's all anyone cares about anyways.)
An episode that rattles off many rules of acquiring stuff while offering a few surprises. I hesitate to even spoil them for you. If you haven't seen this episode, go ahead and watch it now and then listen as these shows are as always, full of spoilers! Maybe this shownote writer's favorite Ferengi show, certainly of this series.
Here it is! The Ferengi episode that is also a Lwaxana episode, but also stealthily a Wesley episode! We get to talking about the Ferengi, eventually! Look forward next week as we get into some real juicy Ferengi stuff with DS9's Rules of Acquisition!
