Welcome to Watchers of Tomorrow! A podcast where we go through the world of science fiction television episode by episode, talking about the themes, concepts, ideas, the good, the bad, and the weird. We are great fans of sci-fi and would like to invite you on our journey through the funky and strange worlds that we are to explore… Today's episode: Because the Enterprise is between doing important things, that means Data gets to play with Geordi on the holodeck! But Pulaski isn't buying into Data being able to do things like problem solving or observing things. So instead, we have to put the ship at risk while accidentally creating digital life. The arrival of Riker's Beard heralded the start of the shift towards a more updated, distinct Star Trek, ready for the Next Generation of fans. While many will tell new explorers of Trek to skip over season 2, we love it for its inconsistency and the truly high highs that you only get by introducing the Borg, or debating the nature of sentience (should be sapience but we'll let it slide) on behalf of our beloved Data. Join us as we discuss those highs (and some of the lows), as well as give a bit of a history of what was going on behind the scenes. Episode Sponsor: SudVPN! Keep your data safe in these trying times! Bicks Log: Does artificial intelligence require sentience to be considered intelligent? Do AIs as we understand them now deserve rights? What will happen when computer systems are given – or acquire – consciousness? Notes: As a reminder, this was recorded before Picard Season 3 aired, so there may be some odd references. Ryan and Brady tackle a strange early episode of TNG in which everyone is mean to Data for no reason and the holodeck almost destroys the entire ship on a technicality.
In this episode of Trekking Through Time and Space... Hoai-Tran and Jacob puff on a pipe and mutter "Elementary, Dear Data" as the holodeck goes wrong again over on Star Trek: The Next Generation. But it's less smooth sailing as Torchwood: Miracle Day puts its lead characters through some "Rendition." This week we find the crew of the Enterprise waiting to rendezvous with another Federation ship that's 3 days out. While they wait Data and Geordi decide to have an adventure on the holodeck as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, respectively. At first the adventure is short lived, but with a push from Dr. Pulaski the computer creates a foe that even Data cannot defeat. Will Data smoke a pipe while Geordi hangs on his every word? Will Pulaski be saved from tea and crumpets? Will the Captain out wit Professor Moriarty and will we find out that Geordi is an excellent craftsman? All these questions and more will be answered on this episode of Hailing Frequencies Open.
Geordi threatens to mutilate Dr. Pulaski to cover up his mistake. Join your mystery-loving hosts as they discuss the foundations of Data and Geordi's friendship, the literary utility of the character of Doctor Pulaski, and the sinister appeal of late-19th-century foggy London alleys. We just can't get enough cosplay episodes! As the Enterprise needs to wait for a rendezvous with the U.S.S. Victory, Data and Geordi have some time to kill and they decide to go to the holodeck. After geeking out over the details of Sherlock Holmes' place, Geordi gets frustrated at the "game" of solving an already written mystery since Data already knows all those details. Pulaski gets in on it by taunting Data's lack of reasoning and the whole game unravels when Geordi mistakenly instructs the computer to create ... well, sentient life, in the form of the criminal mastermind Prof. Moriarty. Oops! Kate hosts with an outrageous cockney accent the whole time (not really), Erik claims The Naked Gun affected his snack-life, Greg drops a perfect score of 10 broken model ship rigging lines, and Jimmie wants the whole holodeck experiment scrapped for the welfare of the ship and all aboard. The Enterprise is cooling its warp coil waiting three days for the USS Victory, so Geordi surprises Data with a pipe and an invite to the holodeck to play Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. Geordi is immediately frustrated when Data tears through the program using his complete understanding of Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories, pissing Geordi off. When the pair retire to Ten Forward to discuss Geordi’s feelings, Dr. Pulaski butts in. She continues her prejudice against Data: is Data capable of solving a mystery when he doesn’t know the answer ahead of time? Geordi asks the computer to create an adversary capable of defeating Data, and as a result, the hologram of Dr. Moriarty becomes self-aware, insisting he be allowed continued existence. Moriarty takes Pulaski hostage and shakes the Enterprise in an effort to be heard. Picard enters the holodeck with Data and explains to Moriary he cannot exist outside of the holodeck, and promises to store him in memory until they can find a way to free him. Fucking holodeck! I swear. . .

New episode out now! We watched TWO episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation, S2E3 “Elementary, Dear Data” and S6E12 “Ship in a Bottle,” and boy did we have a lot of questions about the Star Trek universe that we did not research. We discuss how the show explored aspects of simulated worlds and sentient AI, the great costumes and fun set design, and ponder if it is weird as an adult to dress up in costumes and go play make-believe with your friends. Katy gives a few minor Holmes lectures, Carrie sympathises with the villain, Maddy saw the twist coming four years ahead, and Mack has problems with DIY building kits in space. We reminisce about our childhood Star Trek memories (including twirling to the theme music), talk about the value of having a physical hobby on a five year space mission, wonder if Data could do cocaine, discuss the hotness of Patrick Stewart, and two of us sing different ‘90’s theme songs. We have a LOT of questions about the Holodeck and how it works, the replicator technology, and living in a post-scarcity world without a market system but we did not look up any answers so fans should expect to shout into the void a lot. At least three of us say “well, actually,” so look out for those! Engage!

Everybody loves a little roleplay, right? Data and Geordi do! But they should have picked a safeword because things get out of hand in "Elementary, Dear Data"!
When Geordi and Data play a Sherlock Holmes game in the holodeck, Pulaski tags along to see if Data can really solve a mystery. But, when the computer generates a worthy foe for Data, the Enterprise suddenly finds itself at the mercy of Professor James Moriarty!
This week we talk about actors and accents, the lost plot of Data's sapience, and how Jean-Luc Picard would totally kill a guy. Is Picard a good leader right now? We make fun of his standing orders and how well the crew is trained, but are we being too hard on him? Was it just that they couldn't write these episodes to improve the crew's abilities or do the folks on the Enterprise have to be poorly trained for these stories to work?
We podcast, therefore we am, or is it we are? Anyways, Sherlock Mark and Dr. Drew Watson jump into the holodeck in an attempt to solve the mystery that is season 2's "Elementary Dear Data". Warning that this podcast features explicit discussion towards the end, followed by more false endings than Return of the King. Next week we follow this up with a show about The Next Generation's season 6 classic, "Ship in a Bottle".
Somebody said, "Hey we should do an Enterprise episode." That person was me. (Me being Mark.) Drew said "We should do The Andorian Incident." The climax of this story is this podcast where we discuss things like prequel expectations, and various forms of prejudice. Look us up on the Phaser Time Facebook group. Next week's show will discuss the Next Generation season 2 classic, "Elementary Dear Data".
TV In Space podcast features the Star Trek: The Next Generation season 2 episode: Elementary, Dear Data We discuss the dutch angle process, how Moriarty feels like a genuine threat, Holodeck safety features, and health and safety procedures aboard starships. Data and the Gang melt our hearts by bringing life to the holodeck in a bolder incarnation of murderous rage. In this episode we ask a simple question, can we create a challenge that can beats Data. Patrick and Sascha try to figure out how this all goes down...and heck...why didn't that paper dematerialize when they walked of the holodeck???
The Green Shirt crew joins the costume party of "Elementary Dear Data." The group takes pride in being horn in-ers, imagines beta versions of the holodeck, and debate their knowledge of Sherlock Holmes stories. Rob learns about orgies, Marcy wants more dicks and blood, and Cameron spots an upside-down Enterprise. The game is afoot in this week's episode of Green Shirt!

Data and Geordi Relationship. When it comes to #BridgeMates on Star Trek: The Next Generation, the first pair that comes to mind is the first season conn officer Lieutenant Junior Grade La Forge and second officer Lieutenant Commander Data. The jovial character of Geordi, with his "artificial sight" (VISOR), did not necessarily seem similar to the personality of the naive "artificial life form" at the operations stations. But whether it was Data playing the straight man to La Forge's joker or their first foray into the Holodeck as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, this duo developed a friendship that evolved through their promotions and developments on the Enterprise-D.Daniel, Darren, and Phillip examine moments that feature the Data and Geordi relationship, from "11001001," "The Price," "Descent, Parts 1 and 2," and "Star Trek: Generations." They discuss how, while there may not have been episodes that spotlighted the duo, the android and the chief engineer became inseparable through their many trials and tribulations on the Federation's flagship. Join Earl Grey as they discuss the friendship between Geordi and Data.HostsDaniel Proulx, Phillip Gilfus, & Darren MoserEditor / ProducerDarren MoserExecutive ProducersNorman C. Something strange is going on here. Data was summoned to engineering to see Mr. LaForge, but when he arrives there is nothing serious happening. In fact it would appear that Mr. LaForge is “over there” with the Victory. Did Data fall into some time distortion? Because the Enterprise isn’t scheduled to rendezvous with the USS […]

You know how sometimes something horrible happens and you just know that the entire world has changed and will never be the same? That’s what happens in “Elememtary, Dear Data”, which doubles down on the malfunctioning holodeck plot from “The Big Goodbye” and cements it in place as a part of Trek. That also goes ...
