Welcome to Watchers of Tomorrow! A podcast where we go through the world of science fiction television episode by episode, talking about the themes, concepts, ideas, the good, the bad, and the weird. We are great fans of sci-fi and would like to invite you on our journey through the funky and strange worlds that we are to explore… Today's episode: Picard meets himself! Or is it? Okay, that is a good question, but perhaps in this episode we spend a little too long meandering through those questions. Also, space pothole time. ====== Who are we? The arrival of Riker's Beard heralded the start of the shift towards a more updated, distinct Star Trek, ready for the Next Generation of fans. While many will tell new explorers of Trek to skip over season 2, we love it for its inconsistency and the truly high highs that you only get by introducing the Borg, or debating the nature of sentience (should be sapience but we'll let it slide) on behalf of our beloved Data. Join us as we discuss those highs (and some of the lows), as well as give a bit of a history of what was going on behind the scenes. Episode Sponsor: SudVPN! Keep your data safe in these trying times! Bicks Log: Does artificial intelligence require sentience to be considered intelligent? Do AIs as we understand them now deserve rights? What will happen when computer systems are given – or acquire – consciousness? Notes: As a reminder, this was recorded before Picard Season 3 aired, so there may be some odd references. This week the crew of the Enterprise find a shuttlecraft drifting through space, the only problem is this particular shuttle is sitting in the Enterprise's own shuttle bay. Upon bring the drifting shuttle aboard the mystery deepens when Captain Picard is discovered inside, but is it the real Picard, a double or a creature pretending to be the Captain? As the crew tries to sort it all out they find themselves in danger as a whirlpool in space opens up threatening to pull the ship in. Can crew figure out where and when the shuttlecraft and Picard double came from? Will they be able to prevent the Enterprise from being pulled in to the Whirlpool? Will Picard not only have a lengthy conversation with, but also kill himself? Can Riker cook? Do the writers continue in vain to make us like Pulaski? All these questions and more will be answered in this week's episode of Hailing Frequencies Open.
The Enterprise encounters a derelict shuttle craft which appears to be from the future. But when the shuttle is determined to be one of the Enterprise's own containing a second version of Picard, the crew fear the premonition of doom the craft contains. While on their merry way to some place called Endicor, the Enterprise encounters a Starfleet shuttlecraft floating dead in space. They tractor beam it onboard only to discover it's one of their own shuttles, the El Baz! But wait, the El Baz never left! There's two of them! How weird can this get? Well, strap in because inside the second shuttle is a whole other Jean-Luc Picard! How is that possible? The second JLP isn't talking because he's comatose and unresponsive to treatment. After some investigation, the crew discovers this Jean-Luc is from the future, six hours in the future to be exact, and garbled log entries show that he fled his Enterprise just before it was destroyed by yet another entity. Our Enterprise crew is on edge as they seem to be hurtling towards their doom! What led the other Jean-Luc to flee his Enterprise? What decisions did the doomed crew make that done doomed them, and how can our Enterprise escape?!?
Two Picards are better than one! It turns out that's not actually true as the Enterprise encounters one of its own shuttle pods with an unresponsive but alive second Picard inside. And the pod is from the future - six hours in the future to be exact. The crew grapples with the strange knowledge that the ship will be destroyed with Opposite Day Picard as the sole survivor. There are plot holes galore that should have been filled with Q in the original story concept for this one, but in exchange we get good performances during several silent, tense shots. Jimmie hosts this one and loves the techno-babble, Kate is souring (again) on Pulaski, Erik is here the musical score, and Greg thinks O'Brien is a changed man after witnessing his captain phaser himself. That came out wrong.
What's not to love about a surreal romp through a 70s casino? Well apparently, it wasn't a weird ENUFF Star Trek episode for the writer Tracy Torme' since he put a pseudonym on the episode after feuding with showrunner Maurice Hurley. Still, getting to see Riker, Data and Worf fish-out-of-water this one while Picard reads the terrible novel it's all based on is enjoyable. Plus, now we know the 52 United States send a vessel outside the solar system in 2033. Better get on that! Greg hosts this episode with a fondness left over from childhood, Jimmie wants to know what the constructs do when NOT part of the plot, Erik opines on the stellar guest star ensemble, and Kate thinks we should mess with Texas as much as possible. We'd love to receive more feedback or questions we can read aloud and answer on episodes in the future so feel free to email letsReengage@gmail.com or message us on Twitter @ReEngageTNG! Captain Picard is beside himself. Join your cross-eyed hosts as they discuss this episode's unusual use of near-time time travel, learn about the original ending that retroactively resolves a lot of loose plot threads, and rage about Riker's supposed skill at cooking. Also, though we talk primarily about "Time Squared" there is perhaps more than expected discussion about My Three Sons, Martin, Three's Company, Donna Reed, Three's a Crowd, Babylon Five, The Ropers, Farscape, Deep Space Nine, Everybody Hates Chris, Enterprise, Mister Ed, and Star Trek: The Original Series. Spoiler warning! We dive right into a detail-rich discussion of this episode, so if you haven't had a chance to see it yet – beware! Next week: We dive right into our weekly coverage of Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 2 with a double-helping of animated discussion about "Strange Energies" and "Kayshon, His Eyes Open" Note that this and all episodes of the It's Got Star Trek podcast contain explicit language and, frankly, an unnecessary amount of offensive content, so the show is intended only for adults and really really cool kids. Guest Beth Norton joins us as we dive into an episode that seems to be some sort of a metaphor for how men deal with their emotions!
Walk long enough you will eventually live to see yourself. Picard discovers that in the near future, something terrible will happen and proceeds to, well, talk about it for about 20 minutes of run time before picking up the action again. Paired with Revenge of the Sith which features Anakin Skywalker seeing a similar vision of a grim future, (and probably a better act 2) we continue to compare and contrast Star Trek to Star Wars! Next week it's a volcano of a show, as we go deep on Revenge of the Sith, known widely as the least bad Star Wars prequel!
In case that title was confusing, YES, this is a podcast about Star Wars episode 2, Attack of the Clones! At best we are trying to compare and contrast it to Star Trek. At worst, we're just trying to avoid making fun of it too much. Yes, it's an easy movie to dump on, but let's try to be nice to this innocent little movie okay? Next week we tackle an episode from the second season of The Next Generation, Time Squared, dealing with premonition of terrible things to come, which was a significant part of Anakin's turn to the dark side even if it was never brought up again in Star Wars!
Tony Sindelar, podcaster and Total Party Kill DM, joins Scott to discuss TNG’s Time Squared (S2E13). Scott and Tony make the most out of a subpar episode of TNG that includes replicator food logistics, a time loop, and a lack of proper corpse management. There’s probably a Dr. Pulaski Fan Club somewhere, but this isn’t it. Tony also watched Star Trek: Discovery recently, so don’t listen past 37:50 if you haven’t seen Season 1 of Star Trek: Discovery! Host Scott McNulty with Tony Sindelar.
In episode 4 we talk a little more in depth about the Instagram algorithm and what that means and how you can make hashtags work for you. We also mention cakes, custard creams and bourbons!! Jill recommends we all follow Jane Braithwaite on Instagram, with her beautiful oil paintings of horses, and Nikki recommends a couple of apps for encouraging block working without distractions and one for measuring you time spent working, to either bill a client accurately or help you to work out a realistic rate. Forest - for block working (and growing trees) Time Squared for measuring time worked/hourly rate You can also find more about Zest It here - the mineral spirit Jill referred to at the beginning of the show.

GHU007 Die Zukunft schweigt (TNG 2x13) (Time Squared)
Some things about canon just don't sit right. They irritate us like grains of sand in the mouth of an oyster. This is our pearl: the notion that Deanna Troi hates her job and is intentionally useless. Also Worf's incessant cry of, “mobiusmobiusmobiusmobiusmobiusmobiusmobiusmobiusmobius.”
The actual narrative is so short here, I wish for a better B-plot. I feel we learn nothing, the crew learns nothing, and nothing actually happens. It's just a bunch of filmmakers asking if they've blown our minds yet. We've had worse stories, but nothing that's really felt so amateurish. Speaking of amateurs, on September 10th Derek and I will be streaming as we watch six episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation, “The Dauphin,” “Contagion,” “The Royale,” “Time Squared,” “The Icarus Factor,” and “Pen Pals.” I tried to get the biggest streak of bad episodes possible. Stream will start at 9:00 AM central time and will feature stills from the episode with audio from Derek and myself. We'll be at: https://www.twitch.tv/vanvelding
Patrick and Sascha are seeing double! Two Picards, Two Enterprises, "One Bridge. One Bridge, One Riker! One Bridge!!!"...oh wait that was a different episode. That's ok, well anyway Picard gets the chance to experiment with his double and fun was had. Stick around and see what happens next as Patrick and Sascha try to figure it out.
Grab a plate of Owon eggs as the crew travel through time in "Time Squared." We struggle with the new slang, disagree about Picard's self loathing, and lose all our listeners with too much Star Wars talk. Cameron joins space OSHA, Rob teaches us how to kill time in restaurants, and Marcy finally comes to grips with time travel. Plus Cameron tests Rob and Marcy on just how well they know themselves. All this and more await you in this week's episode of Green Shirt! Engage!
It's two Captain Picards for the price of one on this episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation--it's Time Squared!! First aired April 3, 1989
This week we have two Picards!! And the Enterprise possibly gets destroyed!! Also, Commander Riker has daddy issues. We talk about the Star Trek The Next Generation episodes Time Squared and Icarus Factor. And we drink.
Treks and the City with Alice Wetterlund and Veronica Osorio
One podcast at a time... The only member of the prestigious Three Timers Club, Kevin T. Porter (Good Christian Fun) returns, talking S2E13 "Time Squared" with Alice and Veronica and taking stock of the state of the world, including a thorough rundown of problematic men. Plus TNG anachronisms, trauma and therapy on the Enterprise, and reverse Picard. Also does this episode pass the Bechdel Test? How would you describe your current season of life? Does it feel like your burried beneath frozen tundra, emotionally hibernating? Or is it more like spring, with signs of new life in view? What does it mean for you to accept and honor your current season? how would you changed if you had One Month To Live? How would you spend your time differently? Would it be Time Squared? Wake Up and Live - Empowered - Blessed - Loved #timesquared #onemonthtolive #costeffectiveness
It's a doppelganger and a counterpart this week on SSHB! First up, executive meddling makes a time-loop tale incomprehensible in "Time Squared", and the spare Picard it has produced seems as confused as the audience about it. After that, Riker's father shows up to reveal that he gets along better with pretty much all of Starfleet than he does his boy in "The Icarus Factor". Also this week: Riker doesn't know what an omelette is, failing the Bechdel test hard, and a correction. Timestamps: synopses: 1:52; Time Squared: 11:45; The Icarus Factor: 29:54
Hailing Frequencies: A Star Trek - The Next Generation Podcast
We're seeing double on this episode of Hailing Frequencies! When the Enterprise encounters a stranded shuttlecraft, they are shocked to find a confused and disoriented Captain Picard inside! They are even more shocked and confused when the original Captain Picard is still on the bridge! The new Picard is from 6 hours in the future, but how did he get here and why are there two Picards?! Plus Riker the Chef!? Join Chief Engineer Mike as he tries to explain Star Trek time travel to Ensign Harry (who's Back to the Future timeline knowledge is completely throwing him for a loop) as they cover "Time Squared" - Season 2, Episode 13 of Star Trek: The Next Generation! Enjoy! "Ensign" Harry - @HSJIII Hailing Frequencies - @HailFrequencies WRITE-IN - HailFrequencies@gmail.com
Matt and Andy drive themselves slowly insane as they begin to breakdown what does and doesn't happen in Time Squared. Episode discussion at the 24 minute mark.
We've got three second-season Star Trek: The Next Generation episodes this week that don't have a whole lot going for them -- we do our level best to get something interesting out of "Time Squared," "The Icarus Factor," and "Pen Pals," but they didn't make our work easy. After that, Mad Men wades into some gross territory and probably pisses off the real Jaguar in "The Other Woman."
This week Patrick joins us to talk about S2E13: The one where Picard needs more time. Basically, the crew plays Where’s Waldo with Q, but surprise: Q isn’t there! Picard gets a time transplant, Riker hosts a dinner party, and everything works out in the end.

Diecast Enterprise: Season 2 – Episode 13 In which we discuss Time Squared Pagz’ episode rank: Foley’s episode rank: J’s episode rank:
Captain Picard and the crew encounter a version of himself from 6 hours into the future. The future Picard is out of phase with time and space and as the time grows closer to the point at which he left, the crew discover some horrifying things about the events to come. Find out how the crew solves this interesting conundrum.
We had such a fun time transposing first season TNG episodes to fourth season TOS episodes, we thought we'd do it again! This time we're looking at the Next Generation's second season for potential adventures that could've easily been part of The Original Series' fifth. Could Uhura have been the mother of The Child? What if Harry Mudd was The Outrageous Okana? Double the Shantner, double the fun in Time Squared? And could the much maligned Shades of Gray actually made for a fitting conclusion to the five year mission in 1971? All this and a few fun tangents as usual in this episode of Standard Orbit. In Time Squared, the Enterprise crew gets thrown for a loop once again by the complexities of space time. Pat and Pat break down a mostly forgettable episode where Picard murders his future self and Riker screws up scrambled eggs.

Time Travel.Time travel and Star Trek go hand-in-glove, so it was no surprise that The Next Generation crew had several "timey-wimey" adventures in its seven years on television and in the feature films. Darren, Daniel, and Phillip go "OUTATIME" in this episode, exploring episodes including "Timescape," "Cause and Effect," "Time Squared," "Time's Arrow, Parts 1 and 2," and Star Trek: First Contact. The Earl Grey trio break down all the times Captain Jean-Luc Picard would have been visited by the laugh-a-minute members of the Federation's Temporal Investigations unit with TNG's experiences with time loops, temporal anomalies, and Q's TARDIS-like powers. Prepare to experience a "Quantum Leap" of traveling across the space-time continuum with the Enterprise-D 's "Excellent Adventure" as they try to avoid predestination-paradoxes, and enjoy this episode about TNG and time travel.HostsDaniel Proulx, Phillip Gilfus, & Darren MoserEditor / ProducerDarren Moser Production Manager Richard Marquez Content Manager Will Nguyen Chapters Cause and Effect (00:02:07)Time Squared (00:05:07)We'll Always Have Paris (00:10:21)Yesterday's Enterprise (00:15:26)2 (00:22:25) Times Arrow (00:24:21)First Contact (00:29:15)All Good Things (00:34:52)3 (00:39:38) Timescape (00:41:22)Captains Holiday (00:47:03) Star Trek: Interactive VCR Board Game / A Klingon Challenge (00:48:13)A Matter of Time (00:50:24)Tapestry (00:51:49)Firstborn (00:52:58)4 (00:55:03)Final Thoughts (00:56:22)Closing (01:01:37) Send us your feedback! If you ever wondered what would happen if the writing staff of TNG completely forgot the entirety of Picard’s characterization and made him into a milquetoast, you’re in luck, because “Time Squared” does that very thing. Later, the cast of Thirtysomething drops by for an episode, to help Riker deal with his daddy issues, in ...
