November 1996.
“The Forsaken” 30th-anniversary reflections When the ambassadors of arrogance visit the station for a fact-finding mission, the crew's hospitality is put to the test. But no one faces a bigger challenge than Odo, who finds himself being pursued by Lwaxana Troi. The situation becomes more uncomfortable when data downloaded from an unknown probe infects the station's systems and triggers a series of failures, leaving Odo and Lwaxana trapped together in a turbolift. Forced to open up to one another, both reveal truths about themselves that they keep hidden from others. In this episode of The Orb, hosts C Bryan Jones and Matthew Rushing continue our 30th-anniversary retrospective that will take you through all of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, one episode at a time. The Forsaken (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (DS9), S1 E17) was recommended by Rugger (They/them), who said: The Forsaken has its problems as an episode, including that Troi's advances are uncomfortable to watch. But in all of Trek, there is no more emotionally raw, powerful, and moving scene than in The Forsaken. Odo and Lwaxwana are stuck in the elevator, and Odo has to revert into his natural liquid state—and he has to trust Lwaxana to do it.This is Trek at its best: taking something fundamentally alien and using it to humanize a character. Almost every other time an alien evokes such pathos, they are being human—as Kirk says of Spock, "he was the most human."Odo's character arc is one of the best in Trek, and this episode starts it off with the most unique, iconic, and moving scene that I can think of in all sci-fi, while also developing a a character who was previously only comedic relief. The Forsaken first aired on January 18, 1993, written by story by Jim Trombetta, teleplay by Don Carlos Dunaway and Michael Piller, and directed by Les LandauThe Federation ambassador from Betazed, Lwaxana Troi, visits the station, and develops an affection for Odo. The mother-in-law all of us fear but none of us deserve drops in to the local DOOM level in "The Forsaken". Between the half baked A and C plots, you know an episode is bad when the Lwaxana Troi is the best part. Is the Odo backstory worth the price of admission? Come find out!
The Enterprise D is just trying to help revive a dead star for the residents of Kaelon II when the visiting Lwaxana Troi gets all twitter pated over Timicin, a scientist from Kaelon II who happens to be played by David Ogden Stiers from M.A.S.H. Things all go pear shaped when the dying star keeps dying, and Timicin is scheduled to join them. Seems the residents of Kaelon II have this wacky deal where they commit ritual suicide at 60 years of age, but Lwaxana isn't having it. Will Picard go to war with Kaelon II to save Lwaxana's boyfriend? Will Deanna Tori get any significant screen time? Will David Ogden Stiers find a bra that works for him? Episode Notes Defiant: You know this is a utopia when the doctor can order vacations. Dax clearly thinks that Kira banged Riker. Because Dax also clearly banged Riker. You know something's wrong when someone is mean to O'Brien. Villainous Goatee! What happens if you put aluminum foil in the replicator? Kira being the A-plot main character is very pre-2001. Using the Maqis and the Bajoran rebellion as examples of morally grey terrorism is not ideal. Reading Enterprise logs must be sanity-wrecking. Fascination: DS9 does a sex farce. Bashir has significant leeway to diagnose colleagues as "assholes". Lwaxana Troi may be the galaxy's worst seatmate, but it is pretty fun to see her making Odo uncomfortable. What ARE jumja sticks? Oh hey, Xanthi fever. Sisko knows something's wrong when people want to cancel dinner. Jake has rizz. Lwaxana's Google Alerts include Odo, Captain Picard, and sex festivals. On the other hand, the O'Briens' relationship plot feels really grounded and realistic. We are joined this week by Nathan Polette and Steve Duda! Matthew (he/him) and Jo (she/they) meet “The Muse” and we wish she would leave and never be heard of again. Just like this episode. We talk about everything we can to avoid talking about this episode including name dropping elder millennial shit like AskJeeves, Walkmans and Game Gears, we argue about nostalgia and the Enterprise D and we appreciate/elevate authentic, real life experiences over manufactured media we are fed on our devices. Also, we do talk about the episode itself. Eventually. Matthew rants about Paramount + and Jo speculates about the sexuality of everyone on Lwaxana's husband's planet. Lwaxana Troi invented Tinder. You heard it here first, kids! Alexander teaches us all a life lesson on whether to be nude at your weddings. Before that, Lwaxana teaches young Alexander about mud baths and creepy circus performers and the importance of laughing hour. Before that, Troi teaches Worf about the power of signing contracts with your children so that they perform chores like every good Klingon does. It's one of the most reviled episodes of DS9 ever... but does it deserve its reputation? Jake's getting his brain sucked by a Creativity Vampire and Odo might be saving Lwaxana from the friendzone by marrying her. Also Jay Leno drops by and is predictably 'mid.' We've got our first guest star in today's episode as we get the nonstop machine of comics crowdfunding Matthew Hardy to join us in talking about the First Lady of Star Trek: Majel Barrett! Majel's been in so many episodes, hell, so many SERIES of Star Trek over the years, so there's a lot to work with here. We've got shockingly little Majel in the TOS episode that ostensibly is a spotlight focus on her. Then we're in to the wild world of Lwaxana Troi as she gets kidnapped by Ferengi in TNG and that version of the Ferengi are the absolute worst. Like Internet Guy worst. Finally we get a surprisingly nice pairing of Lwaxana and Odo stuck in a lift together as a weird life form from the Gamma Quadrant has got into the computers. 20:13 TOS: What Are Little Girls Made of? 48:37 TNG: Ménage a Troi 1:11:18 DS9: The Forsaken Talking points include: Westworld (both flavours), Babylon 5, Only Murders in the Building, Righteous Gemstones, Adam X the X-Treme, Ahsoka, Classic Dr Who, FMV PC games, Charlie's back on his Lost bullshit, From, Amnesiac City, Two time GLAAD award winner Peter Allan David, The Matrix, Terminator, I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream, The UK Office amount of awkwardness, Shoggoths, Tiny Clangers, The Prisoner, Legion of Super-Heroes fashion, Mario Kart-based declarations of love, Vampire: The Masquerade, The Mos Eisley Cantina Band, Lucille Bluth, Lwaxana Troi going full Mrs Bennet, Picard giving it all Shakespeare, More Classic Dr Who, Lord of the Rings for the SNES, Gilmore Girls, Tamagochi, War of the Worlds.

This show introduced us to some of the most iconic characters in television history and took us on a journey through space that we'll never forget. Today, we'll be diving into the characters of TNG and discussing some of our favorite moments from the show. So, without further ado, let's begin! First up, we have the captain of the USS Enterprise - Jean-Luc Picard. Picard is one of the most respected and admired characters in the Star Trek franchise, and for good reason. He's a natural leader, a brilliant strategist, and an all-around great guy. Some of our favorite moments with Picard include his interactions with Q, the time he was assimilated by the Borg, and his epic speeches about the importance of exploration and discovery. Next up, we have the ship's first officer - Commander William Riker. Riker is known for his charming personality, his incredible trombone skills, and his love of jazz. He's also a fantastic leader in his own right and has saved the ship on more than one occasion. Some of our favorite Riker moments include his relationship with Troi, his beard (of course), and his epic trombone duet with Data. Speaking of Data, he's our next character on the list. Data is an android who is fascinated by human behavior and strives to become more human himself. He's also incredibly intelligent and has saved the ship and its crew countless times. Some of our favorite Data moments include his attempts at humor, his friendship with Geordi, and his exploration of his own programming and limitations. Geordi La Forge is the chief engineer of the Enterprise, and he's also one of our favorite characters. He's a brilliant engineer who can fix just about anything, and he's also incredibly kind and compassionate. Some of our favorite Geordi moments include his relationship with Data, his ability to see through his VISOR, and his friendship with Barclay. Deanna Troi is the ship's counselor, and she's also half-Betazoid, which means she has empathic abilities. Troi is a warm and compassionate character who always puts the well-being of her patients first. Some of our favorite Troi moments include her relationship with Riker, her ability to sense danger, and her strong connection to her mother, Lwaxana. Worf is the ship's chief security officer, and he's also the only Klingon on board. Worf is a fierce warrior who takes his job seriously, but he's also a complex character who struggles with his identity and his place in the universe. Some of our favorite Worf moments include his relationships with other Klingons, his love for prune juice, and his epic battles with the Borg.

Also, Dixon Hill comes back this episode! Ruthie and Matthew talk about consent in dating culture, trigonometry, and how they actually enjoy Data's anecdotes.

This week, Lwaxana's back in town and giving some top-tier oo-mox. Later, Dr. Crusher saves an alien's life and he turns out to be space Jesus.
The hostage nobody wants is none other than Lwaxana Troi in Majel Barrett's triumphant return to the role her husband Gene described as the Auntie Mame of the Galaxy. The Ferengi don't put on too good a look here, with Damon Tog capturing mother and daughter Troi and chess club boy toy Riker before any nookie can occur. Lwaxana distracts with the Ferengi version of oral while Wesley Crusher trains for his own oral exam, if you know what I mean. Everything works out in the end when Picard professes his love of his big ole warp engines and Wesley gets promoted to full-on ensign, much to our very special Canadian guest correspondent Shelly Coley-Donohue. Jimmie G has found a kindred spirit in Shelly's distaste for the young and no longer "acting: ensign. Get in touch with us on Twitter @ReEngageTNG! Matthew (he/him) and Jo (they/them) talk about Lwaxana Troi's “aggressive nature” towards Odo, compare Kira and the Bajoran's to food industry workers out back on a smoke break, and discuss the integration of Star Trek cast and guests across multiple Star Trek shows. Matthew asks if Rene Auberjonois ‘father knew his son played a fascist on Star Trek and Jo rants about their love for Lwaxana as the cool aunt for queer kids around the universe. As always, be prepared that spoilers may be lurking around every corner just like Garak on Empok Nor. 23. Star Trek: The Next Generation analysis of season 1 episode 10 (Haven) Two fun episodes in a row, woowee! In this campy romp, Deanna gets a visit from her mother, future in-laws, and future husband (Wyatt) on a surprise arranged marriage visit, and chaos ensues! Riker is the poutiest baby in the universe, Lwaxana is a force of nature, and Data loves the mess during all the nuptial celebrations and negotiations. Of course, as Deanna is cursed in love, it doesn't work out but we were shipping Wyanna (Dyatt?) HARD. It seems like a good match has been made until the White Snake video girl shows up and steals Deanna's man, so she is stuck with Riker, yet again. We do take a few serious beats to explore the themes of ableism and disease brought up in the episode, taking an interesting detour through the way people are treated when sickness is thought to be their own "fault." Overall, much fun was had and we look forward to Lwaxana's return in future episodes! Support the Show!Financially support us on Patreon! Today,* We think Timisin is kind of the cutest.* Lwaxana is actually not as hatable as usual! And we ask the question, "What would you do in the Kaelon's place?"
Rebinging Star Trek DS9: The Muse Hello Star Trek fans! Welcome to season 4, episode 20: The Muse where Lwaxana Troi turns up with a big surprise and a creepy alien preys on Jake's writing talents. Even though the creepy alien is supposed to be the muse, we also learn that Lwaxana has had a similar muse-like impact on Odo! There are some surprises in this wildly underrated episode and also some genuine "ewww" moments. It's always nice to see a guest appearance from Majel Barrett-Roddenberry, but we also have an interesting performance from Meg Foster as the alien. The Muse In this episode a creepy alien turns up and starts sucking the life force out of Jake while supposedly turning him into a great writer. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad if she didn't also rub it all over herself while hiding out with him in the bowels of the station. I mean this is gross. Meanwhile, Lwaxana Troi turns up pregnant and in need of help from Odo who in this episode surprises himself when he examines their relationship. Turns out he kind of digs her. What's this rebinge thing? It's a re-watch of a thing you've already seen but love to watch and talk about. Lwaxana is back! A Ferengi has a crush. Troi and Riker get kidnapped. Wesley misses the school bus. There is a lot of weirdness in this one. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thenerdtrekpodcast/support
Rebinging Star Trek DS9: Fascination Hello Star Trek fans! Welcome to Season 3 Episode 10 of Deep Space Nine: Fascination. In this episode, Majel Barett returns as Lwaxana Troi to chase after Odo and generally cause havoc. Keiko is also back with Molly in tow and she is a little cranky. Why is someone always cranky on this show? It doesn't matter, because Dax's purple dress and Kira's killer bangs make up for the crankiness! Fascination Kira is hosting the Bajoran Gratitude Festival on the station and everyone is in a very jolly mood...well, until Lwaxana arrives to bother Odo and Keiko arrives in a sour mood. Kira is unusually happy and her boyfriend has arrived to make her even happier...well until he starts chasing after Dax. And Dax starts chasing after Sisko. And Jake...sweet innocent Jake...starts chasing after Kira! What in the heck is going on!? Come on Julian, figure it out before somebody does something they'll regret! What's this rebinge thing? It's a re-watch of a thing you've already seen but love to watch and talk about. We go deep with every episode, walking you through every scene and analyzing all of the characters and story lines. Jake's got a new friend. She's a little older, a bit mysterious, and she feeds off creative psychic energy. But just think of the new book he'll get out of the deal! Deanna, her mother Lwaxana, and Riker are kidnapped by a Ferengi who wants the elder Troi for business AND pleasure. Can the crew find them before Deanna gets a stepdad?Cameron, Daniel, and a PBS quilting show make their way through the cringe AND gross racist undertones of this episode. Can they find anything worth liking in this smoldering trash heap?
When Deanna's mother returns, sexy shenanigans are afoot! But don't worry, we get to hide on the holodeck with Picard! When Cam favorite guest star returns, we'll all master the pronunciation of “Lwaxana.” But don't worry, we have angry cannon rant with Dan!
Love - or a close proximity - is in the air when Lwaxana drops by Deep Space Nine for the Bajoran Gratitude Festival. She's still obsessed with Odo. Vedek Bareil's obsession shifts from Kira to Jadzia. Jadzia is all over Sisko, and Jake can't stop obsessing over Kira. The only two who can't seem to fall in love are the O'Briens. It's a mid-station's night dream when Fascination goes into the Mission Log.
The episode that would become "Menage a Troi" started as a pitch called "Piece of Mind" from Fred Bronson to Gene Roddenberry. Having already scripted one episode of The Animated Series, Fred had an "in" with the TNG production staff and knew that a Lwaxana story would be needed. Our special guest this week is Fred Bronson himself with tales of rewrites, rejected ideas and the importance of work lunches. See the document: http://facebook.com/thetrekfiles
In this very special ASMR episode of Star Trek: Deep Space 9, Jake gets the tingles while rustling some papers and Odo gets the tingles of love in the place where his heart should be! Jakes writing gets a bump from a very odd creative vampire, and Mrs. Troi returns to the station to teach Odo about bizarre alien childcare rituals. Clay joins the show to talk about being unfamiliar with Lwaxana on DS9, what Odo wants in a relationship, and Jake Sisko: F*** Machine! Are you looking for older episodes?
