We are continuing our series of life optimization episodes today with the dynamic Laura Vanderkam, time management expert and author of multiple books on the topic, including three books we're discussing in today's episode: her book 168 Hours: You Have More Time Than You Think, which came out in 2010; Off the Clock: Feel Less Busy While Getting More Done, which came out in 2014; and I Know How She Does It: How Successful Women Make the Most of Their Time, which came out in 2015. Laura has also written What the Most Successful People Do Before Breakfast: A Short Guide to Making Over Your Mornings — and Life, which came out in 2012; All the Money in the World: What the Happiest People Know About Getting and Spending, which was released in 2013; The New Corner Office: How the Most Successful People Work from Home, which came out in 2020; and 2022's Tranquility by Tuesday: 9 Ways to Calm the Chaos and Make Time for What Matters. And that's still not all of her books! A graduate of Princeton, Laura and her husband share five children — so time management is a must! — and she became interested in time management while working as a journalist, after interviewing accomplished people juggling busy schedules. In October 2016, she gave a TED talk called “How to Gain Control of Your Free Time,” which has been viewed more than 12 million times, and she has written everywhere from The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Fortune, and more. She is also the host of the “Before Breakfast” podcast and the co-host of the “Best of Both Worlds” podcast with Sarah Hart-Unger. With a life as busy as Laura's, she has to know how to manage her time! Today we chat about Laura's philosophy that looking at your life in 168 hour blocks — so, a week — is more preferable than looking at it in 24 hour blocks; the power of time tracking; the best piece of time management advice she's ever received; how outsourcing is a time management hack; her thoughts on multitasking; and so much more. There's not a person among us who has an extra stockpile of hours in their day or week — no, not even Beyonce! — and Laura's here to teach us how to make the most of our time. The boys drink and review "Beast of Both Worlds," a "Bi-Coastal IPA" from Lagunitas. George Soros has become a whipping boy for the right. The man was born a Hungarian Jew and lived through both Naziism and communism, but made his respectable pile of money in the United States. P&C start off with a brief biography, but move on to speak about his underlying philosophy and the causes he promotes. Soros was deeply influenced by the philosophy of Karl Popper and his concept of open and closed societies. In an open society individuals are free to think and act independently with minimal government control. An open society has pluralism and tolerance, democratic governance, change and reform (because no one holds the ultimate truth), and a commitment to our own limitations (fallibilism). If giving to political causes qualifies a person as a philanthropist, Soros is a big one. His foundation supports ... * Democracy and human rights * Education * Criminal justice reform * Public health * LGBTQIDYSDLKSDH rights * Immigration and refugee support * Racial and social justice * Economic equity * Media freedom * Climate change and environmental protection All of these flow logically from his commitment to the "open society" concept, and Soros takes a very liberal stance on all these issues.
In this episode, I introduce you to Mary H. who is married with two sons and a dog. Mary has always been a fairly organized person, but she was looking for productivity tips. She listened to “Best of Both Worlds” and heard about the Sunday Basket®, but first invested in The Productive Home Solution®. On her 40th birthday, she was ready to burn it all down. There was a lot of change from switching up her position at work, to the world coming out of Covid, to retiring from a side business. She decided to revisit old podcast episodes. She was looking for new ways to do things. Before, when Mary had heard about the Sunday Basket®, she questioned, “Why would you delay what you can do today?” But after revisiting the podcast and trying new ways, she experienced the benefits. When her husband mentioned taking the boys mini golfing, she was able to help him locate the free round of golf she knew she had. It was a win-win. She could easily tell him where it was and they got to use the coupon. When we started recording, Mary shared she was packing for a Make-A-Wish trip granted to her son. Her son has recently recovered from cancer. But we talked about that unsure time and the systems Mary had in place to keep her son comfortable and her family going. When her son was diagnosed they gave her a binder, but Mary added useful things like checklists and it took the place of a would be Medical Binder. I just had to reference one of mine the other day. How cool is it that information from 20 years ago can help us make informed decisions for today and the future? Mary also invested in the Kids Program. She admits her kids haven't participated so much in learning, but it has helped her understand how to facilitate them decluttering and organizing. She used the system 1) to keep the item and keep it in his room, 2) to say the child wants to keep it but not in their room, and 3) to toss or donate. Mary and her son were surprised with how much he got rid of. They were able to donate those toys to another child. Mary is thankful for the voice of reason through the podcast to focus on the important stuff and continually be thinking of how to always be improving. Mary has always been good to take time for herself, but she can enjoy it now without guilt knowing all the things will get done. She wishes she'd valued trying things in different ways. Just because one way works doesn't mean another way could be even better and more efficient. While she admits she hasn't used all of the products to their fullest potential, she's found immense benefit from the items she's purchased and all of the free content constantly offered from Organize 365®. Mary's advice is, “Don't be afraid to invest in all of the Organize 365® stuff.” EPISODE RESOURCES: The Sunday Basket® The Productive Home Solution® The Paper Solution® Organize 365® Kids Program Sign Up for the Organize 365® Newsletter On the Wednesday podcast, I get to talk with members of the Organize 365® community as they share the challenges, progress, missteps and triumphs along their organizing journey. In episode 209, Prep Dish founder Allison Schaaf talks about planning strategies with guest Sarah Hart-Unger from Best Laid Plans and Best of Both Worlds podcasts. They cover big-picture planning all the way down to smaller daily details, and even include a peek into Sarah's personal meal planning approach at home. Sarah is a mother of three living in Florida, and is a physician, podcaster, and blogger with a passion for all things planning. She approaches planning as something essential to having her days run smoothly, not only to make the day-to-day less stressful, but also keep goals and dreams moving forward. Sarah's approach to planning involves a nested-level strategy, touching on yearly, seasonal, monthly, weekly, and daily goals. This strategy ensures big goals don't get left behind, while small details aren't abandoned only to pile up later in the future. She explains that at each level, you're referring back to the level above and using that to shape what you'll accomplish. An annual planning strategy Sarah loves to utilize is breaking up her year into quintiles, or fifths of the calendar year. Both paper and digital aids are in Sarah's planning arsenal. One of her favorite current planners is the Hobonichi Cousin A5 from Japan. She often tries out different planners and reviews them on her Best Laid Plans podcast. Prep Dish services have been a steady part of Sarah's meal planning for many years and she loves the Super Fast menu in particular. She splits the meal prep work with her nanny, which is a streamlined process that has worked well in this season of Sarah's life. The flexibility of Prep Dish meals and high protein options work very efficiently for her family's current meal planning needs. Released September 6, 2021 Dr. Sarah Smith is a family physician and charting coach. She specializes in helping physicians with our charting backlog so we can get home on time without the looming cloud of unfinished charts and callbacks. This frees up mental space for the next patient, making that visit a bit more efficient. By the end of your morning, have a plan for how you are going to tackle callbacks. We also discuss dictation, scribes, templates, and how this is all easier said than done. She went to medical school at the University of Western Australia and has worked in primarily rural communities as a family physician, and is now in Edson, Alberta, Canada. Dr. Smith is a certified life coach and knows firsthand the experience of never being done and having unfinished charts and inboxes begging for your attention. Using Your Medical Training for Multiple Income Streams with Naomi Lawrence-Reid, MD Published Jun 07, 2022 Naomi Lawrence-Reid, M.D. is a pediatrician and founder of Doctoring Differently, a course and coaching platform designed to teach physicians of all specialties how to transition out of full-time clinical and academic practice while starting lucrative and flexible careers that best utilize their medical training and experience. We discuss all of her different income streams, like per-diem, locum tenens, veteran and social security disability exams, medical expert witness work, aesthetics, how she got into each of them, how we can get started, and why it is OK for a pediatrician to inject Botox into adults. Dr. Lawrence-Reid initially intended on a career as a pediatric emergency medicine specialist, but she was unwilling to yield to the confines of restrictive hospital contracts, non-negotiable salaries, exhaustive administrative duties, and oppressive call schedules. She developed the Doctoring Differently curriculum in order to give physicians the tools to choose themselves and transform their individual passions and expertise into gratifying careers with increased income, tremendous freedom, and enhanced quality of life. Dr. Lawrence-Reid is a proud Boston-area native currently based in San Diego, California. She attended Wake Forest University, University of Massachusetts Medical School, and she completed her pediatrics residency at Children's Hospital at Montefiore/Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, New York.
