#204: Hampton Sides - "The Wide Wide Sea: Imperial Ambition, First Contact and the Fateful Final Voyage of Captain James Cook"

Axelbank Reports History and Today

From the publisher: "On July 12th, 1776, Captain James Cook, already lionized as the greatest explorer in British history, set off on his third voyage in his ship the HMS Resolution. Two-and-a-half years later, on a beach on the island of Hawaii, Cook was killed in a conflict with native Hawaiians. How did Cook, who was unique among captains for his respect for Indigenous peoples and cultures, come to that fatal moment?Hampton Sides' bravura account of Cook's last journey both wrestles with Cook's legacy and provides a thrilling narrative of the titanic efforts and continual danger that characterized exploration in the 1700s. Cook was renowned for his peerless seamanship, his humane leadership, and his dedication to science. On previous expeditions, Cook mapped huge swaths of the Pacific, including the east coast of Australia, and initiated first European contact with numerous peoples. He treated his crew well and endeavored to learn about the societies he encountered with curiosity and without judgment.Yet something was different on this last voyage. Cook became mercurial, resorting to the lash to enforce discipline, and led his two vessels into danger time and again. Uncharacteristically, he ordered violent retaliation for perceived theft on the part of native peoples. This may have had something to do with his secret orders, which were to chart and claim lands before Britain's imperial rivals could, and to discover the fabled Northwest Passage. Whatever Cook's intentions, his scientific efforts were the sharp edge of the colonial sword, and the ultimate effects of first contact were catastrophic for Indigenous people around the world. The tensions between Cook's overt and covert missions came to a head on the shores of Hawaii. His first landing there was harmonious, but when Cook returned after mapping the coast of the Pacific Northwest and Alaska, his exploitative treatment of the Hawaiians led to the fatal encounter. At once a ferociously-paced story of adventure on the high seas and a searching examination of the complexities and consequences of the Age of Exploration, THE WIDE WIDE SEA is a major work from one of our finest narrative nonfiction writers."Hampton Sides' website can be found at https://hamptonsides.com/AxelbankHistory.com is designed by https://www.ellieclairedesigns.com/Axelbank Reports History and Today" can be found on social media at https://twitter.com/axelbankhistoryhttps://instagram.com/axelbankhistoryhttps://facebook.com/axelbankhistory

Thirty years ago, Star Trek: First Contact brought one of the franchise's most important moments to life: humanity's first meeting with the Vulcans. This week on The Trek Files, host Larry Nemecek welcomes actor, writer, and Does It Fly? co-host Tamara Krinsky for a uniquely personal look behind the scenes of that iconic sequence. Using an original production call sheet from April 23, 1996, the conversation takes us to the nighttime shoot at Charlton Flats in the Angeles National Forest, where dozens of extras helped populate the post-war settlement that would witness history. Among them was a young aspiring actor named Tamara, hoping to gain experience and maybe earn a coveted SAG card. What happened next was something straight out of Hollywood legend. During filming, director Jonathan Frakes singled Tamara out from among the crowd, rebuilding part of the scene around her reaction shot. Her featured appearance in the finished film earned her a day-player contract, a SAG membership, and a memory that has stayed with her ever since. Along the way, Tamara shares stories of chilly overnight shoots, watching the legendary cast at work, and experiencing firsthand the creation of one of Star Trek's most beloved cinematic moments. Recruiting Conversations
From First Contact to Close: The Recruiting Sequence That Actually Works

Recruiting Conversations

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 14, 2026 7:11

Most leaders don't have a recruiting problem. They have a process problem. They reach out when they feel like it. They follow up when they remember. They set meetings when someone feels warm. And then they wonder why recruiting feels inconsistent. In this episode of Recruiting Conversations, I break down what a healthy recruiting sequence actually looks like—from first contact to close. Because recruiting without a sequence is emotional. Recruiting with a sequence is strategic. Episode Breakdown [00:00] The Real Issue Most leaders are not lacking effort. They are lacking structure. Without a clear sequence, every conversation feels different. And inconsistency creates friction. The 7 Phases of a Healthy Recruiting Sequence [01:20] Phase 1: Awareness The goal is not to book a meeting. The goal is to open a loop. A thoughtful message A referral introduction A comment followed by a DM Low pressure. High respect. You are starting a conversation, not forcing one. [02:00] Phase 2: Curiosity If they respond, you move into learning mode. Not pitching. Not selling. Understanding. What are they building? What are they proud of? What is challenging? Where do they want to go? The best recruiters listen more than they talk. [02:20] Phase 3: Vision Alignment Now you connect their future to your vision. Not as a pitch. As context. Based on what you shared, let me tell you where we are going. Vision always comes before structure. [02:50] Phase 4: Value Demonstration Let them experience what you offer. Invite them to a team meeting Introduce them to a leader Show onboarding Walk through growth plans You are not asking for commitment. You are building clarity. [03:10] Phase 5: Exploration Now the conversation becomes real. What would a transition look like? What concerns do they have? What risks are they thinking about? What would need to be true to move forward? This phase requires patience. Pressure here destroys trust. [03:30] Phase 6: Decision Clarity You are not convincing. You are clarifying. Instead of asking: Are you ready to move? Ask: How are you feeling about the fit? If alignment is there, the close feels natural. If not, you go back to exploration. [03:50] Phase 7: Transition Support The process does not end at yes. Help them: Navigate resignation Transition smoothly Build early momentum This is where your reputation is built. [04:05] The Big Picture A healthy recruiting sequence is: Relationship first Curiosity driven Vision centered Value demonstrated Pressure free Structured but flexible If you skip phases, you create friction. If you rush the process, you create resistance. If you talk comp before vision, you commoditize yourself. If you push before clarity, you create tension. Key Takeaways Structure Creates Consistency – A clear sequence removes emotional decision-making Curiosity Builds Trust – Understanding comes before influence Vision Leads the Process – Never skip straight to compensation Experience Drives Belief – Let people see and feel what you offer Patience Wins More Than Pressure – Timing varies, but process stays consistent Closing Should Feel Natural – If it feels forced, something was skipped Here is the truth. Great recruiting is not about being charismatic. It is about being intentional. When you follow a clear sequence, you stop guessing. You stop reacting. And you start leading people through a process that builds trust, clarity, and momentum. Join the Working Lunch If you want to go deeper on this, I host a biweekly Working Lunch where we break down real recruiting challenges and build strategies together in real time. This is not theory. These are real questions from leaders like: Should I lead with text, DM, or call? How do I hook someone in the first 5 seconds? How many follow-ups is too many? How do I move someone off the fence? What should a 15-minute recruiting call actually include? It is a live environment where you can bring your situation and walk away with a clear next step. The next one will be April 24, 2026 at 12 PM ET. Save your spot here.  Want Help Building Your Recruiting Sequence? If you want to design a recruiting sequence that fits your leadership style, your market, and your goals, let's build it together. You can book time directly on Richard's calendar and we will walk through: Your current recruiting process Where breakdowns are happening How to structure each phase clearly How to create consistency across your team Visit bookrichardnow.com and grab a time that works for you. Recruiting is not random. It is a system. And when you build the right sequence, growth becomes predictable.

Talking Trek is back live with special guest Jason Vneck for a big community episode covering STFC's latest updates, the return of Vengeance Is Mine, Borg Sphere reactions, and the increasingly spicy conversation around Alliance Tournaments. The show starts with some classic live-show chaos as DJz and Griffin return from Idaho with stories, jokes, and one truly unhinged Ghost energy haul before settling into a fun and thoughtful conversation with Jason about content creation, Twitch growth, podcast milestones, and how communities form around Star Trek Fleet Command. From there, the episode dives into the game itself: Borg Sphere impressions, ship utility, artifacts, store issues, officer value, and how newer content is landing with players across different ops ranges. There is also some great Star Trek lore discussion mixed in, especially around the Borg, First Contact, and Voyager. The second half of the show is a deep dive into the future of Alliance Tournaments, including the announced sunset of alliance rerolls, the broader in-game economy, free-to-play strategy, tournament balance, Temporal Disruptors, and whether STFC is heading toward a full tournament refresh. The recording for this Talking in Carz episode starts a few minutes into the show, but once it kicks in, DJz and Jules go deep on Arcfall launch day, the new Borg Sphere loop, and the real math behind blueprint acquisition in Star Trek Fleet Command. This episode breaks down how the new hostile mechanics work, why killing hostiles without the Sphere does not really help progression, and how the Sphere's tasks and Maverick-credit rewards are designed to scale over time. DJz and Jules also tackle the biggest hot-button topic of the launch: blueprint cost, free-to-play timelines, and the hard choices players now have to make between Dive Bar upgrades, research, officers, and Sphere progress. They also cover Suppressors vs. Obliterators, forbidden tech, Chaos Tech, new refits, artifacts, epic Maverick credits, and why the Sphere is best understood as a loop-focused ship rather than an all-purpose monster. Along the way, they share the strategy advice players need most on day one, including when to prioritize Dive Bar 20, when Dive Bar 30 may actually be smarter, and why Jules' calculator is so important for planning your path. If you're trying to figure out whether the Borg Sphere is worth chasing, how long free-to-play acquisition may really take, and what matters most in Arcfall right now, this episode is your roadmap. #StarTrekFleetCommand #STFC #Arcfall #BorgSphere #TalkingTrek #TalkingInCarz #Scopely #STFCStrategy #MaverickFaction #StarTrek   00:00 First Contact event hype and exclusive real-life rewards 00:01:04 Recording picks up mid-show and the informal live-only format begins 00:01:34 Can players kill new hostiles without the Sphere? 00:02:55 Burning vs. hypothermic decay and the round-one kill loophole 00:04:07 Suppressors vs. Obliterators and early punch-up possibilities 00:04:42 The blueprint-cost debate and why players will have to choose 00:06:18 Best early priorities: Dive Bar 20, key research, then blueprints 00:08:15 How long it should take newer Ops 55 players to reach Dive Bar 20 00:09:05 Punch-down strategy for solo armada milestones and weekly credit math 00:11:24 Blueprint pricing, weekly returns, and the long breakeven conversation 00:14:45 Is the Borg Sphere paywalled content or a grind-to-unlock feature? 00:16:35 Why players are frustrated with a path that could stretch beyond 100 days 00:18:43 How Sphere tasks stack and improve Maverick-credit income over time 00:21:04 Why regular Maverick credits may eventually become surplus 00:23:34 Jules' calculator and planning your credit-spend priorities 00:25:30 Behind-the-scenes pushback that got blueprint costs lowered 00:28:19 Forbidden tech, Chaos Tech, and what actually comes with the ship 00:31:03 Why Suppressors matter now and Obliterators are a later-game accelerator 00:33:17 Is Scopely experimenting with long free-to-play unlock timelines? 00:36:42 Zephyr and Cochrane shard events plus First Contact Day meta 00:38:36 Free refits, instant jump, and whether Assimilate Sting matters 00:40:01 New artifacts, epic Maverick credits, and who they're really for 00:42:12 What non-buyers will still be doing this month in the Maverick loop 00:43:56 Final verdict: the Sphere is a loop-only ship, not an all-rounder 00:45:00 Preview of tonight's follow-up stream and lab testing plans

We talk about Holindrian and The Human Revolution, a prequel that digs into oppression, resource control, and the uneasy trade-offs between freedom and security. One of the most striking parts of the conversation is the culture on Eridu, where creativity is treated as a threat. Stories, songs, and open artistic expression are not harmless hobbies, they're a problem to be managed. We also touch on Children of Eternity, where the lens widens from internal control to a much larger, stranger universe, and the pressure shifts onto duty, survival, and consequences on a cosmic scale. If you care about worldbuilding that has rules, enforcement, and day-to-day consequences, this one's for you.Macaulay's website where you can buy the books and learn more! https://www.macaulaychristian.com/And here is the episode page itself: https://richardsonsrubicon.com/no-songs-no-stories-first-contact-macaulay-christians-apocalis-universe/And if you want to have a go at answering the world building questions... https://richardsonsrubicon.com/community/season-5-speculative-fiction-where-worlds-meet/balancing-security-and-freedom-in-speculative-fiction/#SciFiBooks #Worldbuilding #SpeculativeFiction #WritingCraft #AuthorInterview #SciFiAuthor #WritingCommunity #BookPodcast

The national narrative is that Iran's leadership has been decapitated and that we are destroying the enemy. What is not being discussed is the second, third and fourth order effects of a decapitation strategy in a country of 92 million people, with a population that is 29.4 percent Shia Muslim. We are not hearing about the global impact on supply chains, and the regional disruptions to food. We are not discussing the impact of a war that begins with a bombing campaign but becomes a war rooted in martyrdom. No war is ever won by bombing alone; there is always need for boots on the ground. The national narratives are only stepping stones to lead the United States into another forever war.  #BardsFM_Morning #ForeverWar #SpeakTruth Bards Nation Health Store: www.bardsnationhealth.com EnviroKlenz Air Purification, promo code BARDS to save 10%: www.enviroklenz.com EMPShield protect your vehicles and home. This episode is your rapid-response briefing for Arcfall's First Contact flavor, with DJz, Griffin, and Jules Kern walking players through the new Maverick faction loop and the headline threat: Conqueror Borg Solo Armadas. The crew's mission is clear: cut through early confusion, lay down a practical step-by-step plan, and make sure nobody faceplants into new mechanics on day one. The first “do it now” directive is all about missions. They recommend hitting Warp Dive Bar Part 1 and Part 2 immediately from the gifts tab, because that's where you unlock the building key and get an early stash of directives for the new armadas. In other words: procrastination is cancelled, at least until after your morning coffee and your mission rewards. Then comes the new station building, the Warp Dive Bar, which turns out to be less “cute decoration” and more “the gearbox of the whole arc.” Jules explains the key value: as the building levels up, the store bundles improve in quality while costing the same, meaning early building progression can multiply your overall efficiency. They frame it as a multi-benefit engine: better bundles, more solo-task access, and stronger rep/credit flow over time. On the combat side, the show waves a bright neon warning sign: these Conqueror Borg armadas have a prerequisite “gotcha.” If your armada doesn't include one of each ship type, an instant-kill weapon can trigger, so composition matters before the first shot is even fired. From there, they outline the three big research counters players are being told to prioritize: Isolytic Defense, Apex Shred, and Critical Damage Reduction, plus the broader philosophy of “hit hard, hit fast” while the community figures out optimal crewing and levels. They also clear up a bunch of “what even is this target?” confusion: there are two listed rarities of armadas, but directives and loot remain the same, so it's mostly a difficulty label rather than a loot tier you should obsess over. On the tasking side, Jules calls out that the Conqueror Borg Solo Armada task looks like the most rewarding, and they emphasize coordinating alliance focus so you're not splitting effort across weaker payouts. Finally, the back half of the episode is a tour of this arc's shiny toys: Zephram Cochrane's utility and sourcing considerations, “Transformed Data” and his loot scaling, and a rundown of artifacts that seem pointed at multiple systems (including some G7 open armada support). They close with a crisp day-one checklist: do missions first, source directives, test crews, coordinate tasks, and spend Maverick credits with discipline because you will feel the pinch if you try to buy everything at once.   00:00 – Cold open, caffeine-fueled rollout begins  02:52 – “Everything you need to know” setup: Maverick faction + Conqueror Borg Solo Armadas 05:44 – Warp Dive Bar Part 1 + Part 2 missions: do them immediately (gifts tab), grab directives + building key 08:36 – The Warp Dive Bar arrives (barn-on-a-station vibes), and why it's central to progression 11:28 – Armada “instant kill” warning: bring one of each ship type or get vaporized 14:20 – The three big counters (Isolytic Defense, Apex Shred, Crit Damage Reduction) and why they matter 17:12 – Strategy talk: round cap uncertainty + “hit hard, hit fast,” calibrate levels, start below ops 20:04 – Two “rarities” of armadas: same directives, same loot, mostly a difficulty label 22:56 – Why upgrade the Warp Dive Bar: store bundle quality scales while cost stays the same 25:48 – Building level = multi-benefit engine (more solo tasks, more rep/credits, better store bundles) 28:40 – Timeline check: building parts “shipments,” and the grind-to-20 reality check 31:32 – Alliance task priority: Conqueror Borg Solo Armada task pays way more than the others 34:24 – Participation philosophy: this arc actually looks more playable for more people 37:16 – Store/task loop: keys unlock tasks; tasks feed rep/credits; weekly reset rhythm gets discussed 40:08 – Officer spotlight: Zephram Cochrane sourcing + whole-hull repair utility (and rep scaling) 43:00 – Officer spotlight: “Transformed Data” loot scaling + why he screams “G7 open armadas” 45:52 – Artifacts: Phoenix cockpit (PDP), Cochrane music disc (isolated dmg vs open armadas), priorities 48:44 – Patch-note bomb: more artifacts, many “pay only (this month)” + quick reactions 51:36 – Day-one roadmap begins: missions first, then directives, then smart coordination 54:27 – Final marching orders: pick the right alliance task, don't overspend credits, test crews and share data

Darkness Radio Presents: Reinventing SETI: New Directions in the Search for Extraterrestrial Life w/ John Gertz & Scotty Rorek! In today's Thanksgiving Episode, you get a double helping of guests! Scientist/Author John Gertz and Psychic/Medium Scotty Rorek!  For millennia, humanity has looked up at the sprawling tapestry of stars and wondered what lay beyond. With time, we learned that each star is not a pinprick point in a domed sky, but a massive plasma sphere so far away that the distance becomes incomprehensible to the human mind, measured in light years of millions and billions. This distance invokes crucial questions. Do we share the universe with other intelligent lifeforms? If so, how do we approach the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI)? Lastly, do we need to examine our assumptions about extraterrestrial intelligence? John Gertz's book, Reinventing SETI clears out the cobwebs of outdated or wrongheaded SETI paradigms such as Fermi's Paradox, the Drake Equation, and METI (i.e., proactively sending signals from Earth to putative aliens). It argues that scientists should approach the pursuit of extraterrestrials (ETs) in a more effective manner. Author John Gertz states that ETs, as biological lifeforms themselves, cannot accomplish interstellar travel, but have instead placed robotic probes throughout the universe, perhaps even in our own Solar System. Gertz also warns that humankind is woefully unprepared for the day of First Contact with an alien probe right here in our own backyard. He suggests contingency planning, involving international cooperation as well as broad cross-disciplinary expertise. On Today's show, we welcome in John Gertz to talk about his theories about whether ET exists, whether they have made contact with us, and what we should do if they appear on our world!! Tghen, Psychic/Medium Scotty Rorek joins us for a special segment in which he helps Tim explain why sometimes you need a little help from your friends!
