In this vintage conversation from the 1990s, Lois McMaster Bujold joins Tony Tellado and Ernest Lilley at a moment when her acclaimed Vorkosigan Saga is evolving in bold, emotionally resonant ways. Speaking from the era of her then‑latest novel, Memory (1996), Bujold offers a candid, thoughtful look at the craft behind one of science fiction's most beloved universes. Now 76 and living in Minneapolis, Bujold remains a towering figure in speculative fiction — but here, listeners get to hear her voice from the period when Miles Vorkosigan's journey was taking its most introspective and transformative turn. BONUS: Vintage Radio Texture: Patrick Stewart & Ernest Lilley In this archival clip, Patrick Stewart reflects on what made Star Trek: First Contact such a defining moment for both Jean‑Luc Picard. Thirty years ago, Star Trek: First Contact brought one of the franchise's most important moments to life: humanity's first meeting with the Vulcans. This week on The Trek Files, host Larry Nemecek welcomes actor, writer, and Does It Fly? co-host Tamara Krinsky for a uniquely personal look behind the scenes of that iconic sequence. Using an original production call sheet from April 23, 1996, the conversation takes us to the nighttime shoot at Charlton Flats in the Angeles National Forest, where dozens of extras helped populate the post-war settlement that would witness history. Among them was a young aspiring actor named Tamara, hoping to gain experience and maybe earn a coveted SAG card. What happened next was something straight out of Hollywood legend. During filming, director Jonathan Frakes singled Tamara out from among the crowd, rebuilding part of the scene around her reaction shot. Her featured appearance in the finished film earned her a day-player contract, a SAG membership, and a memory that has stayed with her ever since. Along the way, Tamara shares stories of chilly overnight shoots, watching the legendary cast at work, and experiencing firsthand the creation of one of Star Trek's most beloved cinematic moments. I went live for a special “Copy, Moon Joy” edition of I Think This Is Great!, and I have a lot to say about space.
The League goes Trekking Through Trek again as they tackle Star Trek: First Contact. The crew of the Enterprise D travel back in time to battle the Borg for the fate of humanity. They also have to convince a drunken buffoon to fly a spaceship so aliens will spot him, and Captain Picard has to stave off obsession. All that, plus Data gets some! This week Matt, Clay, and John dive deep into the 1996 blockbuster Star Trek: First Contact — widely considered the best Next Generation film and one of the greatest Star Trek movies ever made. Directed by Jonathan "Two Takes" Frakes (who plays Commander Riker), this 30th anniversary classic pits the Enterprise-E crew against the relentless Borg Collective in a race through time back to April 4, 2063 — First Contact Day itself. We break down Picard's Ahab-level obsession with the Borg, the introduction of the terrifying yet oddly seductive Borg Queen, Data's very special encounter with her, and whether Zefram Cochran is the most reluctant hero in sci-fi history. We also get into the Rotten Tomatoes rankings across all Star Trek films, Jonathan Frakes' legendary "Two Takes" directing style, the practical model work by ILM on the Enterprise-E, and why the line "You're astronauts on some kind of Star Trek" might be the best/worst line in franchise history.Whether you're a lifelong Trekkie or just Trekking Through Trek for the first time, this is the episode for you.STAY CONNECTED!LISTEN & WATCH Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1crlHvsmYIRn4zjSdq44qn?si=5ee27c125ad54b70 The League on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@leagueofordinarygentlemenOFFICIAL SITES https://www.leaguepodcast.com http://vampcouncil.comTHE LEAGUE ON SOCIAL Facebook: https://facebook.com/leaguepodcast Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/leaguepodcast Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/leaguepodcast.bsky.social Threads: https://www.threads.net/@leaguepodcastCLAY & DURSIN Dursin on IG: https://www.instagram.com/dursin Dursin's Substack: https://dursin.substack.com Clay on IG: https://www.instagram.com/claynferno Clay's YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@claynferno Clay's Substack: https://claynferno.substack.com

Cinematic Sound Radio - Soundtracks, Film, TV and Video Game Music
Today on THE ESSENTIAL SOUNDTRACKS, Erik Woods, Robert Daniels, and Randy Andrews continue their journey through the STAR TREK films and their soundtracks as they discuss the eighth movie in the series, STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT. You'll hear them discuss the film in great detail, including such topics as the selection of Jonathan Frakes as director, the design of the new Enterprise E, Worf's return, the Defiant, the special effects as created by Industrial Light and Magic, the Borg Queen, and more. Also covered in great length is Jerry Goldsmith's incredible score (with help from son Joel). STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT was released on November 22, 1996. James Cromwell, Alfre Woodard, and Alice Krige join cast members from the 1987 series STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION who were starring in their very first solo STAR TREK motion picture. In the film, the Borg travel back in time, intent on preventing Earth's first contact with an alien species. Captain Picard and his crew pursue them to ensure that Zefram Cochrane makes his maiden flight, reaching warp speed. The original soundtrack album was released at the time of the film's release on GNP Crescendo Records, featuring 44 minutes worth of score with two licensed songs. On April 2, 2012, GNP Crescendo Records announced a limited-edition collector's CD pressed to 10,000 copies. It features the complete score by Jerry Goldsmith with additional music by his son Joel, newly remastered by recording engineer Bruce Botnick, with an accompanying 16-page booklet including informative notes by Jeff Bond and John Takis. The album is still available to purchase at the time of this recording. NOTE - Our Patreon-only episode includes an extra segment discussing the cue "The Dish." You can listen to that version HERE. Episode 147: John DuncanIn this episode, I'm joined by model maker John Duncan, whose career spans nearly fifteen years at Industrial Light & Magic and includes work across Star Wars, Star Trek, Galaxy Quest, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Matrix and more.John talks about his early fascination with building miniatures as a kid, making models out of paper and cardboard, and how that instinct to just try things eventually led him into the film industry. What started as architectural model work and a stint in television quickly turned into a career at ILM, beginning in 1993, where he arrived for what was meant to be a two-week job and stayed for over a decade .We get into the realities of model making for film, learning to build for the camera rather than for close inspection, working under tight deadlines, and letting go of work when it needs to be modified or destroyed for the shot.John also discusses his time as a concept model maker on the Star Wars prequels, working with Doug Chiang to create what he describes as “3D blueprints” for the wider production. These models helped bridge the gap between design, practical builds and digital assets, ensuring consistency across departments. There's plenty here on specific projects too, including building the Enterprise-E for Star Trek: First Contact, working on the ships for Galaxy Quest, and contributing to the large-scale pirate ships in Pirates of the Caribbean. He also shares stories about unusual materials, problem-solving on the fly, and the collaborative nature of the ILM model shop.We also talk about the shift from practical models to digital effects, where miniatures still have a place today, and why physical builds continue to resonate with filmmakers and audiences alike.John is thoughtful, practical, and clearly still passionate about the craft. This is a great insight into a side of filmmaking that often goes unnoticed, but is absolutely fundamental to how these films were made.Topics coveredGrowing up building models and early creative influencesFirst steps into the film industry via architectural modelsJoining ILM in 1993 and working alongside industry legendsBuilding models for camera vs building for displayWorking on Star Trek: First Contact and Galaxy QuestConcept model making on the Star Wars prequelsCollaborating with Doug Chiang and George LucasThe idea of “3D blueprints” in film productionPractical effects vs digital effectsWorking on Pirates of the CaribbeanMaterials, techniques and problem-solving in the model shopReplica prop community and fan researchWhy physical models still matterThis podcast is completely independent and made possible by listener support. Haunted by his past and a Borg collective that lives rent-free in his head, Captain Jean-Luc Picard must stop the cybernetic zombies from sabotaging Earth's first warp flight—the very moment that puts humanity on the galactic map. While the crew fights a high-stakes game of "hide and seek" in the Jefferies tubes, Picard must find his inner Ahab to stop the Borg Queen. Meanwhile, Commander Riker has to sober up the legendary, yet perpetually hungover, Zefram Cochrane just in time to make history.
When the Borg travel back in time to prevent Earth's first contact and assimilate the planet, the Enterprise must follow them through time to sop them. Will Picard's past connection with the Borg jeopardize their mission or will they succeed and stop the Borg? It's a thrilling space adventure in Star Trek: First Contact. We also talk the latest trailers for Toy Story 5 and The Mandolorian & Gorgu, plus some things we watched this week and more! Next week: Hook.

AGT 205: The Evolution of a Species Pt 4: The Borg (Part 1) In this episode of All Good Things: A Star Trek Universe Podcast, host Christos is joined by Kelvin, Kristin, and Amy to begin a two-part deep dive into one of Star Trek's most iconic and terrifying adversaries: the Borg. Part 1 explores the Borg's evolution from their first chilling appearance in Star Trek: The Next Generation—where they function as an unknowable, unstoppable force of cosmic horror—to Star Trek: First Contact, where the introduction of the Borg Queen gives the Collective a face, a voice, and a more personal connection to Jean-Luc Picard's trauma. The panel examines key episodes including “Q Who,” “The Best of Both Worlds,” “I, Borg,” and “Descent,” discussing how fear, loss of identity, and inevitability defined the Borg at their peak. They also debate whether First Contact strengthened the Borg by making them cinematic—or weakened them by making them knowable. This is Part 1 of 2 in our Evolution of a Species series on the Borg. Part 2 will continue the discussion with Voyager and Picard. Resistance, as always, is optional. Borg? Sounds Swedish....Definitely not Swedish. In a world where one man has only seen 30 or so movies comes a desire to learn from a master. A master of film. A master of cinema. A master who has led such a sad life. Logan seeks the knowledge and he turns to his own personal “Yoda”; Keithie. Join Logan & Keithie on a wild adventure to discover as we watch along with a new movie each episode in THE MOVIE EDUCATION OF LOGAN CROSLAND. This episode, Logan, Keithie & Tim go where no one has gone before; into the future, then into the past. Logan gets caught in the Crosland Fire here as Tim & Keithie share their perspectives on the Star Trek universe as the boys watch Star Trek: First Contact. They discuss the difference between the Captains; the movies & tv shows; Data's story arc and of course "the Trek vs the Wars". Does Logan have fun? You're blended alright. Does Logan end up being an amazing historical figure? Don't try to be a great man. Just be a man, and let history make its own judgements. Does Logan try to leave? 0.68 seconds sir. For an android, that is nearly an eternity. Does Logan learn anything? He learns that when it comes to the Borg; "THEY'VE ADAPTED"

For over thirty years, Adam Scott has been one of the most engaging, hilarious, versatile actors we have working today. Born in Santa Cruz, California, Scott, the son of two teachers and the youngest of three children, sent all of his schooling in The Golden State, as he was a graduate of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Post college, Scott started to get acting gigs in several feature films like Star Trek: First Contact, The Lesser Evil, High Crimes, and a notable supporting role in The Aviator, sharing scenes with Leonardo DiCaprio. At the same time, he had made a name for himself on the small screen with appearances on shows like Boy Meets World, Party of Five, and as a love interest on Six Feet Under. Growing up, Scott always dreamed of becoming either the next Al Pacino or David Letterman, becoming obsessed with Pacino as a beacon of acting for a generation as well with Letterman's obscure sense of humor tickling his funny bone. It's funny how life works out, because as Scott was making his mark in more dramatic work, the summer of 2008 changed his career forever when he starred in the latest comedy from director Adam McKay, Step Brothers, and without any improve skills to his resume, was able to land giant laughs opposite the biggest comedy star of the time, Will Ferrell. From this moment, things took off for Scott, as the following summer saw the release of the cult comedy television classic, Party Down, which followed a group of caterers in Los Angeles as they hope to make it in Hollywood. The show was cancelled after two seasons in 2010 (though it was brought back in 2023 for a third season), but as that door closed for Scott, another one opened with his role as Ben Wyatt on Parks and Recreation, a state auditor who slowly becomes the love interest for Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler). As a fan of the acclaimed NBC show, I can say that the best thing to happen to Parks and Recreation was the addition of Scott as Ben Wyatt, delivering one of the funniest characters on the show as well as one of the best television couples of the last twenty years. Since his time with the gang from Pawnee, Indiana, he's continued to showcase his range as an actor, with guest comedic spots on shows like The Good Place and Veep, was part of the ensemble for Big Little Lies, appeared in the sequel to Wet Hot American Summer, and even hosted comedic physical game show called Don't in 2020. But all of this work has lead him to the biggest role of his career so far as Mark on hit Apple TV+ drama, Severance. From the mind of creator Dan Erickson, Severance follows employeesat a mysterious company called Lumon Industries that have undergone a procedure known as “severance” to ensure that they have no memories to the outside world while they are at work, with no memory of their work life once they leave the building. This creates then the idea of an “innie” and “outie” personality within one's self, which would be dangerous if the worlds crosses, but that's exactly what happens to Mark at the end of season one, as he and his other colleges at Lumon briefly are able to bring their innie selves into the real world in their outie's body. The second season grapples with the repercussions of the rebellious Lumon employee's actions, as well as goes down various rabbit holes to show that the company that Mark works for is various dangerous as well as a deeper, personal connection to him that he could've ever known. It's riveting, thought-provoking, thrilling television that has slowly become the best show on television in large part to the excellent writing by Erickson, the inventive direction by Ben Stiller, and the incredible work by the show's massive ensemble, led by Scott, who in season two, not only gives the best performance of his career so far, but the best performance by any actor on television this year. In his glowing review of the season, our television editor Tyler Doster stated that Scott was “at his best this season,” finding “a new hunger” within his performance that grows this season as the mystery around Mark and the other characters begins to take shape. In my in-depth conversation with the Emmy nominated actor and producer, we discussed the anticipation of filming season two, the differences in playing Mark S. and Mark Scout, how trust is a key theme throughout the second season, and what it is like to be part of a global television phenomenon similar to The Twilight Zone and Lost; two shows that mean a lot to him and speak to the power of character forward storytelling. We also spoke about the dueling romantic relationships Mark finds himself in, what it is like working with co-stars Britt Lower and Dichen Lachman, the technical challenges of filming the camcorder and running sequences found in first and last episode of the season, as well as his versatility as a character actor; moving from drama to comedy, and how that helped him form who Mark is. In between all of this, Scott shared his favorite flavor of Gatorade, the need for bananas when performing stunts on set, his fondness for his time on his other beloved television series Party Down and Parks and Recreation, and why he loves the Fast and The Furious franchise. From comedy to drama to everything in between, Scott can do it all, and with Severance, he's showcasing a confidence of an actor who is destiny to continue to empty the tank until it's time to punch out his time card a long time from now. Adam Scott is Emmy-nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for the episode "Cold Harbor" of Severance. Music: Severance, Opening Title Sequence: Season 2 (intro) and “B-3” from BoxCat Games Nameless: The Hackers RPG Soundtrack (outro).

Strap in and set phasers to “tense banter” — this week's pick comes from Dave, who's boldly going where Chris would frankly rather not: Star Trek: First Contact (1996). As a lifelong Trekkie, Dave's diving into one of the most action-packed, fan-favourite entries in the franchise, while Chris braces for a full-on warp-speed assault of technobabble and space diplomacy. It's the Next Generation's big-screen showdown with the Borg... and maybe with Chris's patience too.Directed by Jonathan Frakes (aka Commander Riker himself), First Contact was the second film to feature the Star Trek: The Next Generation crew and the first where they fully took command of the franchise without the original cast. The production aimed to shake up the usual Star Trek formula, adding darker tones, more cinematic action, and a time-travel plot that brought the crew face-to-face with humanity's pivotal moment: first contact with alien life. With a larger budget than previous TNG films, the team delivered stunning effects, new sets like the sleek Enterprise-E, and intense Borg prosthetics that pushed the limits of the makeup department. The film was a hit with both fans and critics, and even skeptics had to admit: resistance was... well, maybe not entirely futile. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter.www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesbackTrailer Guy Plot SummaryThe Borg are back—and this time, it's personal. When Earth's future is under siege by the galaxy's most relentless enemy, Captain Jean-Luc Picard must defy orders and lead the crew of the Enterprise-E into the past to stop them. With humanity's first contact with alien life hanging in the balance, and the Borg threatening to rewrite history, the stakes have never been higher. Explosions, assimilation, and a lot of dramatic stares through viewports—Star Trek: First Contact is warp-speed action with a side of philosophical time-travel. Episode 377: Star Trek First Contact We are back after an unexpected impromptu summer break. It's been a while since we've touched on Star Trek and since 90% of Brian's Star Trek knowledge comes from lower decks I thought it would be good to have him watch Star Trek First Contact since the film was heavily referenced in one of the episodes of Lower Decks. This strategy seems to have worked so other future Star Trek discussions will likely have a tie into lower decks. I think Brian's perspective on Star Trek from a Lower Decks first approach is an interesting one. First day back and David had some Mic issues, sorry about that. She delves into how trauma, vulnerability, and the quest for redemption shape her character and enrich the film's narrative. Alice shares fascinating behind-the-scenes insights about working with first-time director Charlotte Colbert, executive producer Dario Argento, and her talented co-stars, including Malcolm McDowell and Kota Eberhardt. She highlights the film's unique visual style and how nature and the cosmos are artfully interwoven with personal healing and justice. The conversation moves to Alice's multifaceted journey as the Borg Queen across multiple Star Trek projects, including her pivotal roles in Star Trek: First Contact, Star Trek: Voyager, and the animated series Lower Decks. Alice reflects on the character's enduring allure, mysterious qualities, and cultural significance as an archetype that evokes complex reactions in viewers. Tony and Alice also reminisce about her acclaimed performances in projects like Carnival Row, Ghost Story, and her broad theater background. Alice provides a candid look at how immersive roles can profoundly affect actors—sometimes lingering well past filming, as she recounts from her experience on Silent Hill. With warmth and wisdom, Alice credits her career's richness to a passion for storytelling, collaboration, and the enduring joy of working with devoted creative teams. Whether discussing the demands of fantasy roles, the art of transformation through makeup and costume, or her gratitude for a life spent in performance, Alice offers an inspiring perspective for fans and fellow artists alike. Prepare for warp speed as Gene Lyons and Big D travel back to the 24th century—and then to 2063—to review Star Trek: First Contact, the Next Generation crew's darkest and most action-packed cinematic outing. Commissioned by listener Jeremiah as part of a sci-fi classics series, this episode dives deep into the ethics of Picard's command decisions, the practical (and impractical) nature of Borg assimilation, and the horny weirdness of Star Trek fandom. Along the way, Gene and Big D debate Star Trek vs. Star Wars and ponder whether the Borg Queen really does have big “ASMR energy.” They also address critical questions like: What's the best Star Trek tech? And how many wipes does it take to remove Data's synthetic skin? Whether you're Team Trek or Team Wars, this episode is a hilarious, no-holds-barred deep dive into one of the franchise's most beloved films—and possibly its most awkward. Plot Summary In Star Trek: First Contact, Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of the USS Enterprise-E defy Starfleet orders to confront the Borg, a cybernetic collective intent on assimilating Earth. After destroying a Borg cube near Earth, a Borg sphere escapes through a temporal vortex, altering the past to prevent humanity's first contact with alien life. The Enterprise follows the Borg to April 4, 2063—just before Zefram Cochran's historic warp flight that would attract the Vulcans. As the crew works to ensure history stays intact, Picard battles his trauma from past assimilation, while Lieutenant Commander Data is seduced—emotionally and physically—by the sinister Borg Queen. With humanity's future hanging in the balance, Picard must choose between revenge and reason, culminating in a high-stakes confrontation aboard a compromised Enterprise.
