Tonight, we'll read selected poems from Emily Dickinson, starting with a collection about nature.Little-known during her life, Dickinson has since been regarded as one of the most important figures in American poetry.Evidence suggests that Dickinson lived much of her life in isolation. Considered an eccentric by locals, she developed a penchant for white clothing and was known for her reluctance to even leave her bedroom. Dickinson never married, and most friendships between her and others depended entirely upon correspondence. Her poems were unique for her era. They contain short lines, typically lack titles, and often use slant rhyme as well as unconventional capitalization and punctuation. In early editions, including this one, Emily Dickinson's poems were edited by her friends, better to fit the conventions of the times. Thus some of the uniqueness is best understood by viewing her direct handwriting on the page, or by reading more recent editions.— read by 'V' —See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

On episode 98, we welcome Pastor Michael Walrond to discuss mental health in the Black community, his medical journey and overcoming death on multiple occasions, how he found faith amidst the vast absurdity of life, becoming inspired by Viktor Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning, his friendship with Jamal Joseph of the Black Panthers and meeting Afeni Shakur, how Tupac's music inspired a wave of mental health awareness, and why existential crises tend to create a sustainable sense of purpose.   Michael A. Walrond Jr.—affectionately known as Pastor Mike—is the Senior Pastor of First Corinthian Baptist Church (FCBC) in Harlem, New York. Pastor Mike is quickly rising as one of the most prolific and sought-after teachers and preachers in the country. Considered a visionary, cultural architect, and game-changer by his peers, Pastor Mike has not only catalytically changed the traditional prospective of black church, but he is innovatively shifting the paradigm of Christian understanding and culture. For horseplayers, it's like Christmas in July. This is opening week of Saratoga and Del Mar and at Monmouth Park the $1,000,000 Gr.1 TVG Haskell. In the Haskell, two millionaires Mandaloun and Hot Rod Charlie have a score to settle as they finished 2nd and 3rd in the Kentucky Derby, separated by only1/2 a length. To examine the stakes-filled card at Monmouth we are bringing it a well-recognized figure on TVG Matt Carothers. Matt admits to learning the skill of handicapping at the foot of the master; his own father. Considered a top Pick-Six player. I'm all about trying to hit a home run, stated Carothers, who hails from Minnesota. As a price player, you're going to have many more losing days than winning ones, so you have to make the good days count. The pick 6 has become so watered down that the pick 5 is my favorite play. The takeout is generally lower and you have that chance to win big. The best sequence for me is when I find a price I can single. That gives me the ability to spread a bit in the other races, and if I'm right and get lucky in one or two of the other legs, I can potentially make a lot of money; We'll discuss Matt's style of handicapping for the TVG audience during the pandemic year and a career that has taken him from Minnesota to California and now to the heart of horse country Lexington, Kentucky. In what has become an annual tradition, Tom Law. the Managing Editor of ST Publishing, Inc., the award-winning publishing company that produces The Saratoga Special will be joining us. Tom, a native of Saratoga Springs, is currently the President of the National Turf Writers and Broadcasters, which he served as president of from 2006 to 2012. To anyone who attends the races at the Spa, there is something special about grabbing a copy of The Saratoga Special. Tom and his partners, Joe and Sean Clancy, had to stop the presses last year due to New York's Covid restrictions. The town and track will be in full swing in 2021 and the team at The Saratoga Special will begin their season-long series of sixteen-hour days.

Book Vs Movie: “The War of the Worlds” The H.G. Wells Science Fiction Classic Vs the 2005 Steven Spielberg Movie The Margos go back to both the world of science fiction and the film work of Steven Spielberg talking about the H.G. Wells classic novel The War of the Worlds (1898) which has been adapted as a successful radio program, films, and a TV series.  The novel is about a martian invasion that hits London and an unnamed narrator who escapes, is separated from his wife, and then has up close and traumatic interactions with the Martians who are taking over England. They use heat rays as a weapon and depend on human blood to feed themselves. The narrator meets with people underground on his way back home who want to fight the invaders. He eventually gets home (after being taken care of by a kindly family) and reunites with his wife who somehow survives the alien attacks. In the end, the Martians were killed by “earthly pathogens.”  Considered one of the first novels that supposed that otherworldly creatures could be smarter than humans--the story is a classic and the basis/inspiration for science fiction work for decades afterward.  In 1938, Orson Welles's radio program, created a one-hour play based on the story (which Welles most likely never read) and included some of his favorite writers and produces for The Mercury Theatre on the Air including John Houseman and Howard Koch. The setting was central New Jersey and the resulting panic was caused by an unsuspecting audience who thought the drama was real. Welles had to perform a mea culpa for the press (which he loved!) and it is considered one of the best radio dramas ever produced.  In this episode, we focus more on 2005's The War of the Worlds directed by Spielberg which stars Tom Cruise, Dakota Fanning, and Tim Robbins and is set in New Jersey and New England. Two other members of the cast were in the 1953 adaptation--Ann Robinson and Gene Barry.  So, between the novel, radio program, and the movie--which did we prefer? Have a listen and find out!  In this ep the Margos discuss: The life of author H.G. Wells and how he changed science fiction Orson Welles's influence on the storytelling of the 1938 radio play The major differences between the novel and the movie The cast: Tom Cruise (Ray Ferrier,) Dakota Fanning (Rachel Ferrier,) Justin Chatwin (Robbie Ferrier,) Mirando Otto (Mary Ann Ferrier,) Tim Robbins (Harlan Ogilvy,) Ann Robinson (Grandmother,) and Gene Barry (Grandfather)  Clips used: The Mercury Theatre 1938 production The War of the Worlds trailer “Ferry Disaster” “Fight on the Hill”  “No Shield” Music by John Williams Book Vs Movie is part of the Frolic Podcast Network. Considered one of the turning points of the American Civil War, the Battle of Gettysburg is said to be the bloodiest battle ever fought on American soil. Fought in Gettysburg, Pa., July 1 through 3 in 1863, historians put the number of causalities and missing Union and Confederate soldiers at 46,286. Bayonets, rifled muskets, cannons and infections all contributed to the carnage. AccuWeather.com reports that the weather, however, created causalities as well. A Gettysburg man, Dr. Michael Jacobs, a math professor at what was then called Pennsylvania College, had a strong interest in weather and recorded his observations three times a day, every day, even during the battle. Ben Neely, Executive Director at the Adams County, Pennsylvania Historical Society, emphasized that the most damaging aspect of the weather actually occurred July 4, the day after the battle. Rain fell across the area for most of the day, Rev. Dr. Jacobs put the total at more than an inch. While wounded still lay on the field, some may have felt welcomed by the break in action. Some wounded soldiers had still not been moved from low-lying areas by the Plum Run Creek, however, which overflowed its banks. The wounded soldiers who were near the flood waters, reportedly all Confederate, drowned. According to Civil War historian and retired AccuWeather team member, Dr. Lee Rainey, an even larger issue that was faced as a result of the rain was the retreat attempts made by the Confederate Army on July 4. "They had to move a 17-mile long train of wagons filled with wounded soldiers over the dissolving dirt roads back to Virginia, " he said. "And the rains caused the Potomac River - easily fordable on the march north - to flow so high that the army was trapped on the north side with the Union forces in pursuit. The Confederates dug in for a desperate battle, but in the end were able to escape across the river on the 13th, the day before Meade's planned attack." The days leading up to that point were not without tragedy as fighting consumed the fields of the Pennsylvania town. For its part, the weather was more cooperative at the battle's start. July 1, the first day fighting began, had a sky covered by puffy white clouds all day. The breeze was southerly at only 2 mph; the afternoon temperature was a comfortable 76 degrees. The second day started with similar cloud cover, but clouds increased by the afternoon, when temperatures went up to 81. Likewise, the cloud cover started the third day, July 3rd and cleared considerably by the afternoon. The clouds that remained, however, was the "massive thunder-cloud of summer." A thunderstorm started around 6 p.m. EDT. "The thunder seemed tame, after the artillery firing of the afternoon," Rev. Dr. Jacobs wrote. Learn more about your ad choices. Considered to be the first Christian philosopher, Justin Martyr, whose Feast Day the Catholic Church celebrates today, demonstrates how the pathway to truth always leads to God.  This 2nd Century thinker/convert/martyr’s defense of the faith is unpacked by hosts Laurie and Pete this week, as the tireless saint’s writings show a man who found the goodness of the Christian life, and was determined to share it with all.  Saint Justin Martyr, Patron of Philosophers, pray for us!   Our hosts, as well, in this Year of Saint Joseph, continue the recitation of “The Litany of Saint Joseph,” which can be found here: https://www.usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/prayers-and-devotions/litanies/litany-of-saint-joseph Listen to Talking Saints with Laurie Power and Pete Sanchez on the Talking Catholic channel at Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Stitcher, SoundCloud, Alexa or at https://talking.catholicstarherald.org/show/talking-saints/.  Follow us on… Facebook: www.facebook.com/TalkingCatholic Instagram: www.instagram.com/talkingcatholic Twitter: twitter.com/talkingcatholic

To discuss with me the life, works and legacy of al-Bukhari is Dr. Jonathan Brown. The Great Movie Ride opened with Disney's Hollywood Studios (formerly Disney-MGM Studios) at Walt Disney World on May 1, 1989. Considered to be the signature attraction of the park, The Great Movie Ride was originally considered for a standalone Future World Pavilion at Epcot. Michael Eisner and the team soon realized that the idea was evolving beyond a simple pavilion, so they got to work on a new movie studio theme park, partnering with MGM Studios on the new venture. The Great Movie Ride, which closed in August 2017, included scenes from such classic movies as The Wizard of Oz, Mary Poppins, Alien, The Searchers, Singin' in the Rain, and dozens of other Hollywood films. In this episode, we explore the history and details of The Great Movie Ride, including some of the Easter eggs and historic movie props you might have missed, as well as a few plans and ideas that were never realized. We also talk about the decision to remove The Great Movie Ride to make way for Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway, and we experience the attraction together thanks to a binaural audio recording provided by Virtual WDW (you can find the full video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHTdBMW1GWE).
