I'm brimming with fulfillment today. First of all, I can't remember a time in my life when my work has felt more meaningful. I'm grateful to my students because they are studying so diligently. They happily accept everything I give them and use it to further their learning.It's an overwhelming feeling. And rewarding. Most of the time, foreign language instructors feel at least a certain level of frustration that some of their students aren't as invested as their progress as they are. I do not have this problem anymore. I am also thrilled because I have an opportunity to invest in a few tutors in the same way. They have raised their hands to get much more involved in CLN projects. Words cannot describe how fun it is to collaborate together.I feel as if there are 1,000 exhilarating opportunities in front of me, but I only have time to properly dedicate time to 10. Drowning in an abundant ocean of fulfillment is the choice of words that comes to mind. I am one of the few foreign language instructors who measures student progress quantitatively. To date, I've written 30+ individual case studies tracking the methods different students used and the progress that ensued. My goal in today's blog post is to analyze 2026 Calgary Language Nerds student progress data as a whole and provide unique, actionable insights into what actually drives fluency.Let's dive right in.---Part 1: The Proven Formula. When CLN students consistently follow these actions, they achieve a significant level improvement virtually 100% of the time. This path removes the guesswork and delivers predictable, efficient progress:Enrolling in a long-term program. It's usually 4 to 12 months.Logging study hours. I provide a template to make this easy to do.Having measurable goals. Progress toward these goals is monitored.Taking 1+ lesson(s) per week. Some students take lessons more frequently.Completing homework. The amount is flexible, but completing it is expected.---Part 2: The Unpredictable PathI've noticed with Calgary Language Nerds students that stepping outside of these recommended actions introduces a lot of variables. While students on this track can absolutely still enjoy their lessons and may even succeed, the outcomes become much more unpredictable. Everything is up in the air:Taking a group class. All personalization is lost.Skipping homework. It disrupts the flow of progress.Having a vague goal or plan. You end up flying blind.Forgetting to log study hours. This reduces accountability.Taking fewer than 1 lesson/week. Motivation often plummets.Enrolling in a short-term course. Real transformation takes time.---ConclusionWe all know that most students who try to learn a language never reach their desired level of fluency. Comprehensive solutions that actually work are hard to find. I'm thrilled that, after 10 years of working in this field, I keep inching closer to cracking the code. I didn't know if I'd ever make it.What I offer isn't how everyone wants to learn. And that's okay! My goal isn't to fit every style, but rather to identify the exact habits and preferences that thrive under this method, ensuring a virtually guaranteed learning path for the students who do. It's really standing out to me how much we all need each other. Everyone needs help. In my earlier adult life, I didn't understand this at all. I thought I could do everything. I'd jam-pack my schedule and wear many different hats. I took everything onto my own plate. But eventually I started to notice that I was spinning my wheels and not really moving the ball forward. I didn't want to be busy for the sake of being busy. In fact, I wanted to be less busy. I wanted more time to myself and not be go-go-go 24/7. That's when, gradually, I learned to stick to my strengths and accept the help of others to fill in the gaps around my weaknesses. I can't do it all. I can accept the help of others. Here's a real life, current example: one of my tutors has made a video-based course for the Calgary Language Nerds that is 99% ready to be launched. I just have to do a few administrative tasks first before it can go live.The problem is that I hate administrative tasks. I'm slow at them. They're hard for me. They exhaust me. I do them poorly too since I'm not always one to pay close attention to small details. As a result, I sent a text to my assistant asking her for help. *I wrote this as a note to myself, but thought I'd post it publicly in case it helps others as much as it helps me.---Today is Monday.You didn't have the best day yesterday. Sundays are often that way for you because you usually don't do anything mentally stimulating. You instead just do dull chores which drain your energy. Remember as well that you've felt slightly unfocused the past couple of days. Let's get back on the right track today.Priorities.Here are some bullet points for you to think about today:• Lean into courage• Write down a plan• Get in the zone• Run on clean energy• Flow through the day• Feel aligned with a higher purpose• Get to the gym. It's mandatory.Be patient too.You're going to be set up to have a great day if you keep those bullet points in mind. Don't get too excited. Just keep moving. If you get too high on the highs you will get even lower on the lows. It takes time for fruits to appear. Keep watering the ground. One day at a time. Be as consistent as you can.Transformation is hard.When you feel like things are hard, you are growing. Difficulty = growth. It's a good thing. You'll look back and be grateful.Balance novelty and consistency.In order to keep evolving, you need to keep challenging yourself. At the same time, you need to be remarkably consistent with a small number of things for a long time. You need to get thousands of work outs in to be in stellar shape. You will need to make, likely 500 to 1,000 recorded Gujarati lessons.Balance pushing beyond your comfort zone with mastery within your comfort zone. You can't only live outside your comfort zone. You need both my friend. Lately you've been too focused on consistency. Introduce chaos elements to switch things up.Go kill it today Azren.Be disciplined today. Focused. Avoid your temptation to be idle and have a numb brain. Go make a ton of mistakes. It's ok. Mistakes lead to growth. Don't hide. Play the game and be courageous.
