This week Jeff and Dave pick up an article (linked below) from Ernest Blum in the American Scholar (September 2008) on the once hugely popular (and now wholly neglected) interlinear method of language learning. 19th century businessman and aspiring pedagogue James Hamilton (1769–1831) found the Greek and Latin instruction of his time hopelessly slow and backward: "How . . . is it possible that a child should be chained to the oar, seven, eight, or ten of the best years of his life, to get a language or two, which, I think, might be had at a great deal cheaper rate of pains and time, and be learned almost in playing?" In response, Jimbo developed a system of fitting the translation, in this case English, directly below the line, which privileged reading above all other forms of study as the sole and proper method of learning. Jim made some extravagant claims about the Hamiltonian method's prospects for success: "Reading is the only real, the only effectual source of instruction. It is the pure spring of nine-tenths of our intellectual enjoyments. . . . Neither should it be sacrificed to grammar or composition, nor to getting by heart any thing whatever, because these are utterly unobtainable before we have read a great deal.” But is he right? What about spoken language acquisition? What about images? Games? And what about Zipf's law? The guys examine the article and Blum's claims in light of their own language acquisition and instruction, comparing the Hamiltonian system to Loebs, the finer elements of Greek and Latin syntax, and what'er else strikes their fancy. Be sure to tune in for this and more, especially the secret code word to win a premium Ratio 4 coffee maker. https://theamericanscholar.org/the-new-old-way-of-learning-languages/

(本播客的简介有简体中文和英文。您可以在下方找到英文版本。 This podcast description is available in both Simplified Chinese and English. You can find the English version below.) Hello everyone! Welcome to a new episode of “Five Minute Chinese.” In this episode, I discuss the pros and cons of learning languages by watching TV shows. While it's often seen as a fun and fast way to learn, it may not be suitable for everyone, especially beginners. I introduce the concept of 'comprehensive input,' which refers to language materials that are mostly understandable with some new elements. I share my personal experience of watching a Japanese drama (called 地面師たち or Tokyo Swindlers) and explain why it didn't significantly improve my Japanese due to my current proficiency level. I also recommend focusing on listening materials that match your language level to make '磨耳朵' (ear training) more effective. Additionally, I talk about Maayot, a useful website for learning Chinese through level-appropriate content. My goal with this podcast is to provide simple yet natural language input to help learners practice effectively. If you find 5-Minute Chinese helpful, please subscribe, share, and support the show. Thank you. Dr. Erin Conwell is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology and Coordinator for the PhD program in Visual and Cognitive Neuroscience at North Dakota State University. Erin studies how children aged 6 and younger learn about the structure of their native language. She is conducting studies to determine how they understand what we say to them and how they produce words, sentences, and phrases that are understandable to us. She also examines how children's understanding and representation of language changes over the course of their first 6 years of life. Erin spends her free time hanging out with her husband and daughter. As a researcher of childhood development, she has often found herself closely observing and celebrating the milestones of her own daughter's development. In addition, Erin is an avid reader who typically makes it through 80-100 books per year. Her other hobbies include knitting and curling. She received her undergraduate degree in Brain and Cognitive Sciences from MIT and her PhD in Cognitive and Linguistic Science from Brown University. Her dissertation research received the Peter W. Jusczyk Award. Afterward, Erin conducted postdoctoral research in the Department of Psychology at Harvard University. Erin is with us today to tell us about some of her experiences in life and science.

Click Here For The ShownotesWe are excited to announce that we will be rebroadcasting an episode from our archives featuring Wendy Werneth, an extraordinary polyglot and former vegan travel blogger. During our Italy group tours, we encountered an unexpected shortage of interviews for our podcast while away. However, we found that this particular episode stood out as a good one to rebroadcast.Recently, I had the opportunity to travel to Italy and France, where I was able to put into practice the languages I've been learning. It was a truly enjoyable experience to communicate, even if only to a small extent, in the local languages of these places.Speaking a bit of the local language while traveling adds an extra layer of pleasure to the journey. It enables a deeper connection with the local culture and people, fostering more meaningful interactions. By making an effort to use the language, regardless of its proficiency, you demonstrate respect and appreciation for the local customs and traditions. It opens doors to new encounters, interesting conversations, and a richer understanding of the places you visit. When you can communicate in the local language, it enhances your overall travel experience. You can navigate more easily, seek recommendations from locals, and uncover hidden gems that may be unknown to tourists. It instills a sense of independence and empowerment, knowing that you can handle day-to-day situations and interact with locals without relying solely on English or other languages.Personally, my recent travels have left me highly motivated to improve my French and Italian language skills. Even the ability to communicate at a basic level reminded me of the joy and fulfillment that comes from connecting with others in their native language. This has inspired me to deepen my understanding of these languages so that I can engage more fluently and confidently with people I meet during future travels. I will have the opportunity to visit France in just a couple of months during our French Countryside trip, and I'll be returning to Italy next June.Language learning is an ongoing journey, and my experiences in Italy and France have reignited my passion for achieving proficiency in French and Italian. I aim to expand my ability to express myself, comprehend the nuances of these languages, and immerse myself further in the cultures of these beautiful countries. My motivation to improve stems from a genuine love for languages and a desire to create more meaningful connections with people from diverse backgrounds. While this episode may be a throwback for some, we firmly believe that it offers valuable insights and practical tips that remain relevant today. Whether you are revisiting it or listening for the first time, we are confident that you will find a wealth of inspiration and knowledge.
