Parlando - Where Music and Words Meet

In our last piece I wrote about finding some old writing by my late wife who died decades ago. I was charmed by this poem, which was likely written while she was in college in the mid-1970s and studying writing with Howard Mohr and Phil Dacey.  I performed this a spoken word piece to my own music, and yes, yes it was rewarding to inhabit words she wrote after all these years. The Parlando Project takes words (usually literary poetry) and combines them with original music in differing styles. We've done over 850 of these combinations. Year can hear any of them, and read more about our encounters with the words at our blog and archives located at frankhudson.org

Imagine learning to drive… joining classes, talking to driving instructors, and taking theory exams in a foreign language. That's exactly what I just did. Two weeks ago, I passed my Japanese driving test! It wasn't easy. I went from knowing almost nothing about Japanese road signs, traffic rules, or driving terminology to passing both my provisional and main license written tests on the first try. I also completed over 60 hours of lessons, both online and in a car, all entirely in Japanese. In this episode, I want to share what this experience taught me about language learning: how you can absorb hundreds of new words, understand complex grammar, and actually use all of it in real life… much faster than I ever thought possible. I believe that learning to be yourself, in your first or any other language, is a process! It's a life-long journey of self-discovery!But it's true that, when we're using additional languages, we sometimes don't show the full extent of who we are. Maybe we don't have the words or maybe we use strategies that make life easier in the short-term, but don't allow our unique personalities or ideas to shine.I'm talking about five of those strategies today. My clients use them, but I've used all of them too at some point. I explain why they can be a problem and what we can do to challenge ourselves to move past them.I also mention my mentoring programme - Discover your voice in English: https://englishwithkirsty.com/discover-your-voice-in-english Send me a message if you'd like to arrange a call where we can discuss whether the programme is what you're looking for so that you can discover and use your voice in English - effectively and in a way that feels natural.Do you have any language coping strategies that you want to rely on less in the future?Find out more on the show notes page: https://www.englishwithkirsty.com/podcast/episode280Send me an email if you have any questions or suggestions about the English with Kirsty podcast: podcast@englishwithkirsty.comor come and find me on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kirsty-wolf-a8478235/

When it comes to what proportion of people speak more than one language, estimates vary but the general consensus is that at least half of the world's population do so. If you're bilingual, you may well have encountered a fascinating phenomenon: that a new personality seems to emerge when you switch languages. In March 2017, Quartz ran an article on the subject, written by Nicola Prentis. Prentis included accounts from a number of multilingual people, including Margarita, a Russian-American immigrant who fled the Soviet Union to escape anti-Semitism at the age of 19. Margarita revealed that when she speaks Russian, she feels 'guarded, reserved and uncomfortable.' How is it possible? And are we necessarily more at ease in our own native language? Is Arabic another language that goes unchecked online? A few weeks ago we reported on the almost impossible task of monitoring Kiswahili content online. This situation exposes millions of people to harmful and abusive content while the major social media companies continue to profit. In another report by the Centre for Democracy and Technology, similar conclusions have been drawn about Maghrebi Arabic – a language spoken by about 100 million people across western and central North Africa. Just like Kiswahili, monitoring Maghrebi Arabic is very difficult and current methods are completely inadequate. Dr. Mona Elswah is the lead author of the report on the Maghreb region and joins us on the show. An AI that identifies prostate cancer Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma has one of the lowest survival rates among major cancers.  The absence of early symptoms and the lack of effective screening methods result in over 80% of cases being identified only after the cancer has metastasized and spread around the body. At this advanced stage, survival rates drop to below 10%. Treatment is available when detected early and this is where AI comes into the screening process.  Jez Donaldson meets Dr. Logan Nye, a physician & computational scientist at Carnegie Mellon University, who is behind Galen Health, the company that's designed the cancer detecting algorithm.   The programme is presented by Gareth Mitchell and the studio expert Ania Lichtarowicz. Tom Petersson is a musician best known as the bassist and co-founder of the iconic rock band Cheap Trick. Born in Rockford, Illinois, Petersson's musical journey began at an early age when he picked up the guitar. However, he later transitioned to bass guitar, a move that would define his signature sound and role in shaping Cheap Trick's distinctive style. In the early 70s, Petersson co-founded Cheap Trick with guitarist Rick Nielsen, drummer Bun E. Carlos, and vocalist Robin Zander. The band quickly gained recognition for their high-energy performances, catchy melodies, and fusion of hard rock, pop, and punk influences. Petersson's melodic basslines became a hallmark of Cheap Trick's sound, adding depth and groove to their music. Throughout his career with Cheap Trick, Petersson has been a key contributor to the band's success, both in the studio and on stage. His innovative bass playing can be heard on many of the band's hit songs, including "Surrender," "I Want You to Want Me," "Dream Police," and "The Flame." In addition to his work with Cheap Trick, Petersson has collaborated with various artists and pursued solo projects. He released a solo album titled "Tom Petersson & Another Language" in 1984, showcasing his versatility as a musician beyond the confines of Cheap Trick's sound. Petersson's influence extends beyond his musical contributions. His distinctive 12-string bass guitar, custom-built by Hamer Guitars, has become iconic in the rock world, inspiring generations of bassists. He is also known for popularizing the use of the 12-string bass in rock music, pushing the boundaries of the instrument and paving the way for its acceptance in mainstream rock. Over the years, Petersson and Cheap Trick have received numerous accolades and awards, including inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016. Despite lineup changes and the evolving music industry, Petersson remains an integral part of Cheap Trick's enduring legacy, continuing to tour and record with the band, captivating audiences with his dynamic bass playing and infectious stage presence. Tom Petersson's contributions to rock music and his enduring influence on bassists worldwide solidify his status as a legendary figure in the annals of rock history. Michael Rosen talks to neuroscientist Dr Julia Ravey about whether we think and act differently when speaking a non-native language.More and more people are finding themselves speaking multiple languages in our cross-cultural societies. But when we communicate in a different tongue, do we become a different person? From the decisions we make to the memories we form, research in neuroscience and psychology has begun exploring this fascinating area, which not only offers insights into the linguistic brain, but also calls into question if our ‘core self' is a as stable as we like to think it is…Producer: Becky Ripley
