How to Prevent SinkingThis question was asked on our podcast: How do you stay positive in a negative moment or when someone presents a negative thought or are negative towards you? It gets into that life you guys were talking about...leaders are called to lift. How do you lift when things are sinking? When things are sinking:Look for the holes in the ship. What is not working? What are areas that don't serve others?Address them swiftly.Lovingly talk to the people over these areas.Be clear about the current situation. Jesus did this!Luke 9:46-48 46An argument started among the disciples as to which of them would be the greatest. 47 Jesus, knowing their thoughts, took a little child and had him stand beside him. 48 Then he said to them, “Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. For it is the one who is least among you all who is the greatest.”Ask them how they feel in this season. (You'd be surprised that some people are ready to move on to a different area.)Call people to the standard. If leaders are not leading at the standard that is required, tell them. Good leaders respect the standard. Bad leaders will be exposed by it.Start with the standard. When you share what the standard is, when the standard isn't met, it is clear for everyone.Moments are so spontaneous and unpredictable. These are the times that can shape us the most. This is where you must be ready as a leader. This is where the “filling” is most important. Always spend time filling up as a leader, so that even in the spontaneous moments, we are always ready.
The Language Every Leader SpeaksThe language that every leader speaks is action.Leaders see problems and get a plan of action to overcome that problem so they can lead others to change the problem into a victory. It's easy to point out what's wrong, anyone can do that! We've all known people who bring problems to the table. News flash: there will ALWAYS be problems in any organization.People who lack leadership will want to delegate the solution to other people. But it takes a leader to identify a problem, envision a solution and lead others to bring change.Matthew 14:15-17As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it's already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.” 16 Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.” 17 “We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered. If people are around you, you have everything you need. The Language a Leader Speaks: A leader will speak vision. A leader will speak ideas. (What do you think about this? Have you tried this?) A leader will speak encouragement. The Language Leaders Don't Speak: Leaders don't speak complaint. Leaders don't speak gossip. Leaders don't speak status quo.Discussion Questions:Have you ever known someone who always had a problem with everything?Do you think you are good at coming up with solutions to problems? How do you help lead someone who always makes excuses? What is one area that Jesus is calling you lead?
Communication KillersFor any team or organization to be healthy, communication must be clear and effective. Many of us know some of the communication strategies that work. Sometimes we need to look at habits we have that we unconsciously do that end up undermining our communication efforts. Here are a few.AssumptionsWhen we start to assume people get the message or know the information, we will sometimes find ourselves disappointed. Instead of assuming people know, we must assume people don't know. That way we can communicate in a loving and clear way. A great strategy is to ask questions. This helps us know where those we lead are at. Jesus did this all the time. He asked questions He already knew the answer to. But He wanted those he led to share where they were at. Many times it was revelatory for that person. If you have someone who leads you, you can ask questions to clarify how your role plays out in the vision. Leaders appreciate this so much.OffenseWhen we get offended by someone and do not handle it swiftly, a filter gets put on our heart. We now view that person (and sometimes life itself) through that lens. Then what happens is we start hearing things they did not say, and not hearing things they are saying.Incomplete passAs leaders, we sometimes throw a pass, but it never gets into the right hands. It's an incomplete pass. We must look at our level of communication and see where we need to add more. That way we don't have great ideas that never get executed.Broken systemsSystems are one a leader's greatest tools. It allows an organization to grow and thrive. A broken system is a leader's greatest nightmares. It can cause constant frustration for those involved. A great leader will look at their systems and scrutinize it in the best way. Some great questions are: Is it clear and obvious? Is it easy for people to get involved? Are there any holes that I need to fill?Lack of HonorHonor starts in the heart. When there is a lack of honor for others, we treat people less than what would please God. A lack of honor stirs up division. Whenever there is division, a team cannot thrive. When we learn to cultivate a heart of honor for people, we can treat them in a way that glorifies God and develops a culture of unity.
In this week's Leadership Lab conversation, we have invited our first guest, Meiko Seymour. Meiko is a pastor and a productive genius. Join us in the conversation as we learn some tips on how to be more productive.
Why Vision Dripping is Better than Vision CastingIn order to lead with vision, you must be able to get people on the same page.We must learn the difference between having followers and developing leaders.Persuasion is not the best way to lead. Buy-in is the better way.Creating a culture that's encircled around a shared vision is efficient leadership. When it comes to vision: No one likes to be sold-to, but everyone loves to buy-in!When leading a group of people toward a vision: Convictions trump information! We must not wait until a decision has to be made before we equip people with the information that will form the basis of their buy-in to the vision.Convictions are forged when a leader regularly and routinely “drips” vision.Last minute information can cause the feeling of being sold-to, rather than buying-in.We must build “teaching” environments so that people can hear the vision regularly. The process is more important than the content. It's not that you have a well-polished teaching, but that you have a process to “drip” the vision. What system have you built to drip vision?Three Stages of Vision-Drip: Revelation, Repetition and Recitation.Getting to Know You:Have you ever encountered a pushy sales person? What was that like?Discussion Questions:Do you process information at a quicker pace or at a slower pace? When it comes to getting involved with something, are you an “all-in” personality or a “dip your toe in the water” personality? What's one of the greatest things you've been a part of? Why did it mean so much to ?How well do you “drip” vision to those around you?Put It Into Practice:Celebrate one of your small group members with something you see in them.
Leaders Know the PulseAs leaders, we need to be clued in on where people are.Without knowing the pulse of the individuals and the organization, you won't be ableto lead effectively. Jesus did this.John 11:32-35 32 When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at hisfeet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” 33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. 34 “Where have you laid him?” he asked.“Come and see, Lord,” they replied.35 Jesus wept.Encouragement is needed for every soul. How to effectively encourage someone?o Encouragetheircharacter.o Encouragetheirrole.(agoodhusband, agoodmother, attentiontodetail, theirheart) o Encouragetheircallingandfuture.o Silencetheirinsecuritiesandchallengethem.o Learn their story. (The more we know people's story the more we know them.)Getting to Know You:Do you prefer salty or sweet foods?Discussion Questions:Whattypeofencouragementmeansmosttoyou?Who is someone who showed genuine interest in your life? How did that make you feel?Doyougooutofyourwaytolearnpeople'sstory?Howgoodareyouatencouragingpeople?Prayer Requests:Put It Into Practice:Listen to the story of one of your small group members.
Leaders Are ExtraA leader is a person who is calling people forward.Forward progress toward a vision always requires more effort, not less.Matthew 5:41 If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles.Leaders go the extra mile.A good question to ask is: what would my church look like if everyone did just like me.Exceed your job description.Vision alone is not enough. Vision requires action. Two things are essential: a deep personal commitment to excellence ineverything you do and a commitment to continual improvement. If you want to be extraordinary, you need to stretch yourself above the average person.Discussion Questions:Whoissomeoneinyourlifethatalwayswenttheextramile?Whataresomewaysthatyouaregoingtheextramile?Ifsomeonewastodescribeyouwithoutyoubeingaround, whatdoyouthink they would say?Howdoyougetvisionforyourlife?Howdoyoumakethatvisionbecomeareality?Put It Into Practice:What is one way you are stretching yourself this week?
Leaders practice positivity. The reason we can be positive is, because we know the God who is all knowing and all-powerful.Leaders improve the environment.Examples: speak faith over situations and circumstances, encourage someone and their potential, challenge someone to do something outside of their comfort zoneJesus called peter to walk on water with Him.Jesus cleared out rooms that lacked faith.Jesus called us the salt and light of the world.Leaders don't stifle their people; leaders strengthen their people.Discussion Questions:Is it pretty easy for you to stay positive? What are some things that help you have a positive outlook on life?Who is someone in your life that was very positive and how did that affect you?Is there an area of your life that you know God is calling you to improve?
The Misconception of LeadershipMyth: Once you become the leader, everyone's there to serve you.Truth: The leader is the chief servant.Matthew 20:28 “just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”In the kingdom, we lose rights and gain responsibilities.Maturity can be measured by the level of responsibility someone carries. The leader that learns how to take 100% responsibility is the leader that keeps growing.Leaders take 100% responsibility. We are either taking responsibility and learning how to get better or we are spending time making excuses of why we aren't growing.Real leaders don't blame their people; they cover their people. The buck stops here. We don't pass the buck.It doesn't mean that we let our people continue to make the same mistakes. We take the opportunity to grow and help them grow. It's difficult for a real leader to become offended.Ways we give up our rights:We park far away so we can save the best parking for new guests. We plan services in mind for unchurched people instead according to our preferences. We work with all our hearts whether we feel like it or not.We respond to hurtful situations with the fruit of the Spirit.Ask yourself:Where am I not taking responsibility in my life (personal, in your organization, etc.)? Where do I find myself blaming?Invite someone who is with you the most and ask them “Do I blame a lot? Is there anything I've done that I haven't taken responsibility for?
In this episode, we'll have a conversation about how to model the way for your people to follow. People will follow a leader because of who they are, not because of what they do. Join this conversation around this crucial subject that will make or break your leadership.
In this episode, we'll discover an effective way to build a team and see your leadership thrive. When you invite people to a shared vision, it will give them an opportunity to make a difference. In this episode, the conversation is clarifying what leadership really is and how to get started as a leader. It's easy to get sidetracked from leading when there are so many things that can stand in the way of your focus. Getting a clear vision for yourself and your team is the best way to declutter the decision-making process.
