What's Your Baseline? Enterprise Architecture & Business Process Management Demystified

Some folks go to work and are drained before they even turn on their computer, and they cannot figure out why that is when all the aspects of the job seem to be fine — the tasks, the title, the money. What they don't see is that the managers might be the reason, and that the managers miss emotional intelligence — the ability to “read the room” — and cannot adjust their behavior (and therefore are “off”).This challenge is why we speak with Steve Ponting, who is thinking hard about this topic and is a great advocate for org change management and the way how we as humans behave (and he gives us a brief intro into the three major professional steps that brought him there at the beginning of the episode).Steve is a strategically minded go-to-market leader at ARIS, and he guides cross-functional teams to position our capabilities with enterprise clients across multiple regions. He is recognized as a LinkedIn Top Voice and featured across leading publications and major platforms including CNBC, Steve combines strategic vision, operational acumen, and industry insight to deliver lasting impact. He's passionate about helping organizations adapt, scale, and lead through change. Having gathered over 10 years' experience in direct and in-direct leadership (managing managers), Steve fosters high-performance cultures, promotes innovation through a fail-fast mindset, and enables cross-functional collaboration. As a technology generalist, Steve's career spans senior roles across both industry and enterprise software. From serving as an IT Director to leading technical sales teams at portfolio software firms, he has developed a practical understanding of how to connect business needs with technical solutions. In this episode of the podcast, we are talking about:Steve's backgroundWhat is Emotional Intelligence (EQ), and why is it important? Is EQ still needed in these times of advanced technology (AI)? What happens with the people, and what are the impacts on the organizations and their customers? How to recognize/measure emotional intelligenceHow to get people to develop EQ and the positive benefits — purpose, belonging, and autonomyWhere will the future go?Steve can be reached via LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/steve-ponting/.Please reach out to us by either sending an email to hello@whatsyourbaseline.com or sign up for our newsletter and get informed when we publish new episodes here:

Sandra J. Horton is a well-known author and speaker who offers valuable insights and practical strategies for today's organizational challenges. As a systemic leadership sustainability strategist, she penned "Activate Success: Tips, Tools and Insights to be a Leaders in Your Niche," a book packed with 27 activators to help leaders excel in diverse situations.   Sandra's take on sustainable leadership highlights the importance of aligning values and being ready to address and adapt to rapid change. By promoting mindful, empathetic, and proactive leadership, she urges leaders to build resilience, support their teams effectively, and navigate change with clarity and ethical integrity.   Here are the highlights of our conversation:   - Leadership Requires Conscious Change Management: Sandra emphasizes that many leaders stand in a reactionary mode, making decisions under stress rather than responding thoughtfully. She advocates for leaders to raise their consciousness, pause, and assess their approach to change before reacting.   - Change Readiness: In our current environment, leaders must be prepared to navigate barriers and the moving complexities of business.   - Effective Communication in Change Management: One of the biggest reasons change initiatives fail is the lack of clear communication. Leaders must explain the ‘what and how' of change and the ‘why', ensuring alignment with team values and fostering trust.   -The Importance of Self-Awareness and Adaptability: Sandra highlights the need for leaders to understand their change tendencies. Some naturally embrace change, while others prefer stability. Leaders should be mindful of their emotional triggers and practice "pattern interruption" to control their responses.   -Creating Psychological Safety and Collaboration: Leaders should encourage curiosity, open dialogue, and co-creation in decision-making, ensuring alignment across different personality types and work styles.   - The Power of Sustainable Leadership: True leadership sustainability is about maintaining personal energy and resilience. Leaders must manage their emotional states, practice self-care, and create environments where teams can thrive without burnout.   About the guest: Sandra J. Horton is a Systemic Leadership Sustainability Strategist, Executive Coach, and Speaker, dedicated to helping CEOs, executives, and senior leaders create sustainable, high-impact leadership models that prevent burnout, build resilient teams, and drive long-term organizational success.   As the Founder of Activate Success Edge and creator of the Activate Success Roadmap, Sandra provides executive coaching, consulting, and leadership workshops that empower leaders to navigate disruption, foster adaptability, and implement systemic change. In this episode, Michelle Redfern is joined by Susan Colantuono, founder of Be Business Savvy and co-founder of the Lead to Soar Network, to discuss the transformative coaching approaches needed to support women's advancement into senior leadership. This conversation focuses on how managers, mentors, and coaches can go beyond traditional coaching frameworks to build their own business acumen—and effectively coach women on these skills. By developing these critical coaching capabilities, we can bridge the leadership gender gap and elevate women leaders to new heights.Key Topics Discussed:• Transformative Coaching for Women Leaders: Michelle and Susan explore why standard coaching methods, often centered on Emotional Intelligence (EQ), fall short in preparing women for executive roles. They emphasize the need to integrate Business Intelligence (BQ) into coaching strategies, equipping women with essential business, financial, and strategic skills.• The Missing Thirty-Three Percent: Susan shares her concept of the Missing Thirty-Three Percent—the skills gap in business, financial, and strategic acumen that women often face. This gap, left unaddressed, limits women's advancement to senior positions. She urges coaches and mentors to prioritize building BQ to help women become recognized as invaluable business partners.• Practical Coaching Approaches to BQ: Susan and Michelle outline actionable coaching techniques that managers, mentors, and coaches can adopt to help women develop and showcase business acumen. They discuss the value of guiding women to interpret financial metrics, contribute to strategic initiatives, and effectively communicate business outcomes to senior leaders.• Gender Dynamics and Coaching: Susan offers insights on how gender biases in coaching can reinforce stereotypes, such as focusing on women's confidence and work-life balance over business skills. By recognizing these dynamics, coaches can shift their approach to empower women with the skills that truly drive career advancement.Actionable Insights:1. For Coaches and Mentors: Build your own BQ skills to coach women effectively on business, financial, and strategic acumen. Make it a priority to help women develop the skills and language needed to be recognized as strategic partners within the organization.2. For Managers and Leaders: Transform coaching by focusing on how women's roles contribute to business results. Encourage them to engage with business metrics, strategy discussions, and broader organizational goals to build their reputation as key business players.3. For Women in Leadership: Seek out opportunities to develop your business savvy. Understand how your work impacts the organization's strategic objectives, and learn to communicate these impacts in ways that demonstrate your value as a leader.Resources Mentioned:• No Ceiling, No Walls by Susan Colantuono• Be Business Savvy: BeBusinessSavvy.com• Michelle Redfern's The Leadership Compass for insights on BQ and leadership success.Final Thoughts:Michelle and Susan call on all managers, mentors, and coaches to step up their coaching game by integrating business acumen development into their support of women leaders. In this episode, we dive deep into the concept of empathy and its significance in Customer Experience Management. We challenge common perceptions of empathy, explore its connection to emotional intelligence, and examine how both concepts can enhance your experience management efforts. We begin with a discussion on the importance of Emotional Intelligence (EQ), referencing some compelling statistics: Emotional intelligence influences 58% of job performance. 90% of top performers at work have a high EQ score. The demand for EQ skills is projected to grow six-fold in the next three to five years. Employees with empathetic leaders report a 76% increase in engagement and a 61% boost in creativity. Restaurants managed by individuals with high EQ see a 22% annual profit growth. EQ interventions in the workplace can reduce employee turnover by 63%. 75% of Fortune 500 companies have utilized EQ training tools. Our guest, Sandra Thompson, an emotional intelligence coach from Evolution, shares her insights on empathy within the context of EQ. She emphasizes the necessity of using empathy skills, which involve asking questions and truly listening to understand another person's feelings and interpretations, rather than projecting our own emotions onto their experiences. We also explore the idea that traditional empathy might be too contextual, as emotions are personal and can lead to misunderstandings if the emotional context differs. Thompson's concept of “walking in the customer's shoes” is dissected, with the notion that while some shared experiences can foster empathy, unique contexts might still cause disconnects. We break down empathy in emotional intelligence into three approaches: bad (not caring), good (walking the experience as if you were a customer), and better (experiencing as a customer and asking questions to understand their feelings). This layered approach is essential for effective experience management and creating genuine connections with customers. In this episode we also explore: The impact of empathy on job performance and employee engagement. How empathy and emotional intelligence can reduce employee turnover and increase profitability. The role of emotional intelligence in leadership and its effect on creativity. Strategies for developing and implementing emotional intelligence skills in the workplace. Real-life examples of how empathy and EQ improve customer experiences. The importance of self-awareness in emotional intelligence and managing personal emotions. Practical tips for enhancing empathy skills through active listening and inquiry.

In today's rapidly evolving business environment, traditional leadership models are becoming increasingly obsolete. The command-and-control approach, once the hallmark of successful leadership, is now often seen as a relic of the past. With the rise of concepts like Quiet Quitting, The Great Resignation, and the friction surrounding remote work, leaders are faced with challenges that require a more nuanced, empathetic approach. In a recent interview on the On the Brink with Andi Simon podcast, Melissa Robinson-Winemiller delved into the critical role of empathy and Emotional Intelligence (EQ) in modern leadership. Melissa Robinson-Winemiller's Expertise can Help You Become that Great, Empathetic Leader Melissa Robinson-Winemiller, an expert in leadership development and an advocate for empathy-driven leadership, brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the table. With over 30 years of leadership experience, she has seen firsthand how the lack of empathy can derail even the most promising careers and business endeavors. Her journey into empathy and EQ coaching began after losing a career to what she describes as "unempathic leadership." This experience propelled her to explore how empathy could transform leadership and business outcomes. Melissa's dedication to this cause is evident in her impressive educational background. She holds an MBA and a Master of Data Analytics, providing her with the tools to support her arguments with data-driven proof and sound business cases. She is currently pursuing a second doctorate in Interdisciplinary Leadership, with a dissertation focusing on Empathy in Leadership. This commitment to understanding and promoting empathy as a core leadership competency is further bolstered by her certifications in Change Management (ACMP/Prosci), the Society for Human Resource Management (CP), and Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice (DEI&J) from Cornell University. Empathy is Really about Becoming Better Human Beings Melissa's message is clear: the future of leadership lies in evolution, not extinction. Leaders who are willing to develop their empathy and emotional intelligence will be better equipped to navigate the complexities of the modern workplace. They will be able to build stronger, more resilient teams and create a culture of collaboration and innovation. In conclusion, the interview with Melissa Robinson-Winemiller serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of empathy in leadership. As the business world continues to evolve, leaders must recognize that empathy is not a weakness but a strength that can drive success. By embracing empathy and emotional intelligence, leaders can create a more inclusive, productive, and innovative workplace where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. This interview is a must-listen for anyone interested in the future of leadership and the role that empathy will play in shaping it. As Melissa so aptly puts it, "The more we all work together to be better human beings, the more we all have to gain." About the Podcast On the Strike a Balance Podcast for Working Homeschool Moms this week, I have the great pleasure of welcoming Karen Stone, BA, Special Ed, MA, Learning Disabilities, onto the podcast. Karen has worked in the education field for more than 45 years. Karen's education background and her own experiences of being bullied from childhood to early adulthood, at home and school led her to authoring an anti-bullying blog, www.howwestopbullying.com. Karen's work is also influenced by her experiences raising a son with significant disabilities. Karen's professional experiences as an educator showed her that for children to be successful, whether they had disabilities or not, they needed to value themselves, each other and their abilities. As CEO of SoftStone Products, Inc., Karen has written and piloted research-based children's Emotional Intelligence (EQ) programs implemented with students from Preschool to High School. Karen's new book, Is Your Child's World Emotionally Safe?, reveals her personal story but also makes a compelling case for the inclusion of Emotional Intelligence (EQ) in every home and classroom. Here are a few of the features (from the many) that we really like: Questions are adaptive which means the interactive questions change in difficulty depending on the student's ability. They use a smart algorithm that tracks the student's progress and delivers questions based on their unique needs. The student doesn't even know this is happening, helping them to build confidence and master concepts! Concepts are delivered through video tutorials and summaries which are clear, complete, and easy to follow [like having your very own teacher]. This ensures your children understand something before they're asked to practise it. And then for us parents, CTCMath has: Extensive reports which are valuable in monitoring your child's progress and spotting any gaps. And they offer a 12-month money-back guarantee if this curriculum is not for you and your family. CTCMath will provide a full refund, no questions asked.
