The world searches for peace for the soul. We search far and wide to find a replacement for God to fill this empty space. Finding Balance is the key to our peace.  We need to believe in the BIG because God is Big Enough, but we need to live faithfully in the small things. But how can we find this balance? Well, it can be difficult. There is a lot of noise out there and frankly a lot of opinions whether it be having a better diet, get more sleep, exercise more, say no to more things or whatever else you can think of.  Don't get me wrong, these can be helpful. BUT, we need something else first. So, I reached out to my friend Chris Maxwell to help me understand how to have peace and more balance because his life was unraveled by a disease and it really changed everything. Every person has a story related to their health.  In the 1st Century Church, Christ followers pooled together to take care of the needs of their community. But is this concept possible today? Unfortunately the church as an institution is not meeting health care needs for believers in the same way. I suppose denominational differences, budget concerns and low tithing among other factors left this void. So, is there a para-Church organization that runs on the same Biblical model we read about in the book of Acts or are we stuck with high premiums and less than ideal customer care?  We have good news! Are you making any deals with God right now? I am sure we have all been guilty of this at some point in life.   As a kid, I remember praying, "God if you get my parents to buy me these new pair of shoes, I'll be nicer to my sister." Or, God if you help me pass this test in Algebra, I'll read my Bible everyday.  Something along those lines.   I also remember a time, late in the evening, when I was a youth pastor in college. Driving one of the guy students to his house. He was newer to the group and  didn't believe in God.  As we drove, we discussed the existence of God. At one point, this young man added.... "Oh, ye,h if God makes a bird fly in front of your car right now, then I'll believe in Him!" AAANNDD, of course you know what happened next. Not even a split second after he utters this statement,  a huge bird actually flew right in front of the windshield of my jeep, almost crashing into us.   I'd like to say because of the bird incident that this young man professed faith right then, but  like most of us, he did not hold up his end of the deal. In this episode however, Ronnie Hopkins shares a deal that he tried to make with God. THIS CRAZY WHITE BOY, got on my nerves so bad, but he eventually changed my entire life for good. - Sharon Parker " God asked me to forgive the man who did those things to me when I was a girl, so I could become the woman He wanted me to be." - Sharon Parker No matter how far you may feel from God, you are only one step of faith from Him. Don't let your painful past or current struggle keep you from taking that first step towards finding your healing and purpose. God can change anyone. He is faithful. He is good. And He is love. And He will sometimes use the most unexpected person to work through. In my case, he used a "CRAZY WHITE BOY" Sharon is one example of someone who truly felt like God couldn't love her. She was raped by a family member at 9 years old and spent 30+ years carrying that pain with her. She medicated with drugs and found a "fake" love from future men who wanted only one thing from her. As an adult, it was extremely difficult to have any faith that God was good and that He would be her healer. In this episode, we a blessed to hear her journey from a place of suicide to her becoming a strong and beautiful woman of faith. God healed her of it all. Don't miss this episode because it is important for all of us to be in touch with the reality which Sharon had to live through. It will open your eyes to other people around you that you work with or otherwise to be a person of love and encouragement to. JIM RIPPEY talks about his career as a pro snowboarder, comparing it to an empty well.  Welcome to another episode of This Is My Story.  We spend some time discussing the idea of life being a well.  Is my well empty or is it full?  I guess this depends on my perspective of the meaning and fullness of life itself.  Looking at Jim's highlight reel of his life in the 90's it would be easy to assume his well was full.  After all, he is base jumping off of buildings, buses and cliffs. Everyone in snowboarding knows his name and wants to be successful like him. He was making millions of dollars as a pro snowboarder and traveling the world to do so.  But it was largely a life with out God in it and as you hear from Jim, he describes this well as only a quarter full compared to his life now centered on God. In This Episode Joesph and Job, two men in the Bible who lost everything and suffered to the extent most of us would have given up, but both of them proclaimed "What Satan has intended for evil, God will use for good."  This sums up Mark Wright's podcast and his story.  His parents got divorced when he was only 5. Although his mother remarried and he had a good step father, the hole in his life for his God given birth father was a wound he carried. The evil plot Satan likes to have on all of us and tried to have on Mark's story failed once Mark gave his life to Jesus and grew in his understanding of the Heavenly Father.  God would later use Mark's story to start a ministry called Idols Aside to minister to and love all fatherless youth, single mothers and grandmothers. Our conversation is around the Tornado in Kentucky where Mark and his family live. Mark's faithfully serving and could really use your prayers, support and love.  Beyond awareness of their work and ministry, my hope  for all of us is to see how God can take the brokenness of our past and story and turn it into something GOOD if we'll allow him to.  Enjoy this episode and share it with someone! In This Episode Brian came to American from Liverpool which he describes life there as a kid as Godless, New Agey, and how he never even knew a person who was a Christian.  But deep down in, he questioned if there was a God. Skateboarding is what brought Brian over to America where eventually he would join with Tony Hawk the legendary Skateboarder and his company, turning pro himself as a young teenager.  As things in America turned up, skating professionally and living a rockstar life, Brian gets married young and a few months into the next chapter, it all comes crashing down.   He's divorced, angry, depressed and left questioning the very reason for his own existence. God, are you real? Brian sums this point of his life up by saying, "Life was so frustrating and not going good, that I literally told God, I'm going to disprove you're NOT real and when I do, I'll know that I'm nothing more than an evolved ape and I can go and take my life and end it all."  As he began to read the Bible on this suicidal theology mission, God showed up in Brian's life and proved to Brian, in fact I'm real and I love you and I care for you. Listen in to discover how God carried him through one of the darkest nights of his life. Battling with depression and insecurities was very new to Gary. It came soon after he had broken his neck from a tragic fall on his head. Dealing with physical pain, lack of mobility and Bells Palsey in his face created a culmination of feelings that took a tole on Gary's mental health and his emotional health. But his story didn't end with him being defeated by the enemy, but rather God's word and Gary's determined faith brought him out of his recovery stronger spiritually and with a renewed tenderness for people who've gone through depression or struggled with insecurities. Gary prayed for a miracle every day for months, yet he didn't receive it, at least not the one he was praying for. Instead, Gary's neck was repaired via surgery, screws and physical therapy, but through his recovery and brokenness physically, God revealed a deeper healing that Gary needed and received which was having grace and a better understanding of what people go through who are struggling with addictions, depression or other emotional pain. Gary also shares a story of how his wife, Janie was diagnosed with terminal cancer. She was given 6 months to live, but this time as Gary & Janie and family prayed, God did bring a miracle. Bobby Joiner shares his story of how his faith came early at the age of 12, but something happened shortly after that played a role in his decision to choose a different path, walking away from God.  He pursued his own pleasures, and in his words, "I made a lot of stupid decisions."  15 years later after being hurt, offended and frustrated about his story, God would use his wife, Debbie to get him studying the Bible which not only restored his faith, but changed his life course altogether.   His biggest discovery was the God he walked away from was not the God of the Bible. In fact, God was opposite of what Bobby thought.  "I went on a diligent pursuit of reading the Bible which truly brought me into a personal fellowship again with God." Bobby went on to serve God 30 plus years in prison ministry and serving as Winter Jam Tour pastor to some of the greatest Christian Music bands in the world.  His vulnerability and passion for God is a safe and trusting place for many Christian Music stars to confide in and remain steadfast in their faith. To this we can all thank God for people like Bobby who are unashamed of their past failures in light of what God can do when we open up and accept people where they are. In this episode, I interview a New York Firefighter who was fresh out of the fire academy when 911 happened. At 20 years old, Mike was suppose to be working his shift that very day. However, just a couple of days before the attacks in the city, Mike called a fellow fireman to see if he'd trade shifts. Listen in as Mike shares how he's dealt with survivors guilt. Not only did his friend die in the collapsed building, but his entire company did. Although we could never hear all the stories from 911, I believe Mike gives us a glimpse into what the journey was like for many people from around the world.
