With the album's reduced commercial clout and declining role in music consumption, a dilemma crops up for all long-established bands involved in the endeavour of making a new LP record. Put simply, why bother? Why toil for four years on a body of work that distils 100 song ideas into ten tracks, spending a fortune in the process, only to see it flash across the charts and then evaporate into the mesh of 100 million songs? It's an existential question for Ricky Ross of Deacon Blue, who told me:“It's sort of madness really, when all the good songs and books have already been written. Who wants to hear what's in my head or what we've created as a band? Does anyone even sit down and listen to an album now? But I think of it in the same way as poets, novelists and filmmakers. It's still worth doing if you feel you can do it well”. Arguably, new albums have been especially challenging for Deacon Blue in part because the band made one of the most accomplished debuts ever, 1987's Raintown. With its themes of growing up in Glasgow, work, money, expectations and dreams, Raintown is as universal a concept as any record and yet it is fundamentally a musical tribute to Glasgow that most Scots are really proud of. It set a high bar for Deacon Blue, and yet the band went on to have acute commercial success with the four albums that followed between 1989 and 1994, rounding the period off with a Greatest Hits compilation (remember them!) Our Town, in 1994. The band then split, and you can't say they didn't quit while they were ahead. They each went on to have their own multi-media career ventures, acting, writing and presenting, effectively avoiding the inevitable mid-career slump of many of their contemporaries. Alas, they came back together in 1999 and the second act has been a classic post limelight affair. A string of lower key albums placed them firmly in the ‘for fans only' vortex of music careers - perfectly sustainable and yet largely forgotten by the mainstream. It hasn't stopped the band hitting creative highs with albums though, notably 2014's A New House and the outstanding City of Love in 2020. But when the journey continues, where do you go next? The answer seems to be ‘full circle, then forward'. New album The Great Western Road arrives on a momentous anniversary for Deacon Blue, it is 40 years since songwriter and frontman Ricky Ross and drummer Dougie Vipond created the group's first incarnation. With the opening title track set in Glasgow, it's more than a nod to their debut (indeed, the title track echoes Raintown's opener Born In A Storm, a ‘Gershwin meets Glasgow' classic). The band reunited with Raintown recording engineer Matt Butler and so were clearly ready to revisit their origins. But as the new album unfolds, so does the metaphor of the band stretching out further and further. The result is a bunch of songs that reflect the sense of expectation of their early work with reflection, perspective and a contented resignation. Classic country songs How We Remember It and Curve of the Line are particular highlights of a mature, grown up pop record. Support the showGet more related content at: https://www.songsommelier.com/

Can CBD truly provide effective pain relief, or is it just another overhyped remedy? Join us in this eye-opening episode of Addiction Medicine Made Easy, where Dr. Casey Grover critically examines the realities behind cannabidiol (CBD) usage for pain management. We start the episode with inspiring encounters, including a discussion of the work of musician Matt Butler, who uses his songs to shine a light on addiction in prisons and jails. Dr. Grover also shares his heartfelt recommendation of Stephanie Wittels Wachs' book, "Everything is Wonderful and Horrible," which offers a raw perspective on coping with the loss of a loved one to overdose. As we journey deeper, we unpack a 2024 article from the Journal of Pain by Andrew Moore, which scrutinizes the effectiveness, cost, and potential harms of CBD products. Our discussion highlights the widespread use of CBD, yet flags significant issues like product purity and labeling discrepancies. The episode dives into CBD's dual roles—both as Epidiolex for seizure disorders and as a non-pharmaceutical pain relief option. Despite its popularity, current research shows mixed results on CBD's efficacy for pain relief. Furthermore, hidden risks such as the presence of THC, sedation, and hepatotoxicity are explored. This episode underscores the necessity for ongoing research and thoughtful consideration when using CBD, especially in the context of addiction treatment. Don't miss out on this thorough examination of CBD's complexities and what they mean for pain management and addiction medicine.
Rod Babers, Matt Butler and Jeff Howe are ready for the Texas Longhorns to tackle the SEC schedule in the program's first season as a conference member. Pete Kwiatkowski's defense is playing at an elite level. Still, during the discussion, Rod brings up something that lends credence to the notion of Texas fielding a statistically elite defense in 2024. With Arch Manning's first start in the books, there's plenty to glean from the redshirt freshman's last two outings and why the early glimpse of Manning and the development of Quinn Ewers exemplify Steve Sarkisian's growth as a coach. In a shocking development, Letcher County Sheriff Shawn Stines has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder for the killing of District Judge Kevin Mullins inside the Letcher County Courthouse on Thursday. The incident has sent ripples through the small Appalachian community of Whitesburg, home to approximately 1,700 residents. The tragic event unfolded after an argument between Sheriff Stines, 43, and Judge Mullins, 54, just before 3 p.m. local time. According to Kentucky State Police, Mullins was shot multiple times and pronounced dead at the scene. Sheriff Stines surrendered without incident following the shooting. Kentucky State Police Trooper Matt Gayheart addressed the community, stating that the killing is an “isolated incident” with no ongoing threat to the public. “Any time a situation like this takes place, especially in a small town, it shakes the very foundation of what the town is and this is no different,” Gayheart told local outlet WJHL. The Kentucky Attorney General's office, led by Russell Coleman, along with Commonwealth's Attorney Jackie Steele for the 27th Judicial Circuit, are spearheading the investigation. Coleman emphasized the commitment to justice, stating on social media, “We will fully investigate and pursue justice.” Governor Andy Beshear also responded to the tragedy, posting on X, formerly known as Twitter: “Sadly, I have been informed that a district judge in Letcher County was shot and killed in his chambers this afternoon. There is far too much violence in this world, and I pray there is a path to a better tomorrow.” The community's reaction has been one of profound sadness and disbelief. Lead county prosecutor Matt Butler recused himself from the case due to personal ties with Judge Mullins. “We all know each other here. ... Anyone from Letcher County would tell you that Judge Mullins and I married sisters and that we have children who are first cousins but act like siblings,” Butler explained. “For that reason, among others, I have already taken steps to recuse myself and my entire office.” Laurance B. VanMeter, Chief Justice of the Kentucky Supreme Court, expressed his shock and sorrow, stating, “I am shocked by this act of violence and the court system is shaken by this news.” In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, several local schools were placed on lockdown as a precautionary measure. The temporary closure of the Letcher County Courthouse has added to the community's distress, disrupting the daily lives of its residents. Judge Kevin Mullins was a respected figure in Letcher County, appointed by former Governor Steve Beshear in 2009 and elected the following year. He was renowned for his dedication to supporting individuals in the justice system struggling with substance abuse. Mullins played a pivotal role in developing programs like Addiction Recovery Care, which offers peer support services in the courthouse and has been adopted in over 50 counties across Kentucky. Mullins was also a founding member of the Responsive Effort to Support Treatment in Opioid Recovery Efforts Leadership Team, further highlighting his commitment to community welfare and rehabilitation. As the investigation continues, questions remain about the motives behind the altercation that led to the judge's untimely death. Kentucky State Police are diligently working to uncover all the facts surrounding the case. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Rod Babers, Matt Butler and Jeff Howe are back and open the final Longhorn Blitz before the start of the 2024 season discussing the 2024 Texas Athletics Hall of Honor class. Colt McCoy, Marquise Goodwin and Alex Okafor are the headliners. After discussing McCoy's legacy after he announced his retirement from football earlier in the week, there's plenty of talk about a football-heavy class that the Blitz crew saw play on the Forty Acres from start to finish. Okafor was one of the last dominant edge-rushing Longhorns. Still, the 2024 group of Ethan Burke, Trey Moore and Barryn Sorrell could produce at a dominant clip for coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski. How can an improved pass rush help a secondary looking to rebound from an up-and-down 2023 and vice versa? Rod Babers, Matt Butler and Jeff Howe examine the Texas wide receiver rotation in 2024 and how Steve Sarkisian plans on handling a group full of new faces. The Longhorns lack proven commodities with the top three wideouts from last season's team off to the NFL, which leaves all but a handful of the targets from 2023 to be distributed to a few returning players and a handful of transfers. The Longhorns are talented on the perimeter, but is it more likely that a true No. 1 option will emerge for Quinn Ewers? Or will Texas be deeper than ever in the Sarkisian era because so many playmakers need to touch the football? Rod Babers, Matt Butler and Jeff Howe break down Tuesday's schedule announcement by the SEC that essentially finalizes the first league slate for the Texas Longhorns as a conference member. Texas only has one 11 a.m. kickoff at home and the only morning start on the road could go a long way toward easing concerns about what should be one of the most challenging games in conference play. Plus, this week's episode looks at a continuity advantage the Longhorns have over almost everyone on their schedule. Rod Babers, Matt Butler and Jeff Howe start to examine the impact Johnny Nansen can have on Pete Kwiatkowski and the Texas defense in 2024. When Kwiatkowski has changed things up from one season to the next in his time on the Forty Acres, it's been of case of bringing the right voice into the meeting room at the right time. That could be the case with Nansen, whose Arizona defenses deployed the kind of exotic looks and diverse fronts that can help the Longhorns overcome the losses of Byron Murphy and T'Vondre Sweat. Rod Babers, Matt Butler and Jeff Howe dig into who the Texas Longhorns are counting on for leadership in 2024. Steve Sarkisian lost some powerful presences from the 2023 squad, but Rod's recent interactions with Gunnar Helm have him feeling better about the group of men leading the program into its first season in the SEC. Rod Babers, Matt Butler and Jeff Howe discuss the addition of former San Jose State cornerback Jay'Vion Cole from the NCAA transfer portal and Quinn Ewers' history with the deep ball. Cole brings a lot to the table for a Texas secondary starved for more athletes who can be sticky in coverage and while Ewers has struggled to consistently hit on the deep ball down the field, he improved a lot in that department in 2023 and could be even better in 2024. The Longhorns are headed in the right direction under Steve Sarkisian, but the 2024 draft represents the perfect bridge from the past to the future of college football and Texas has the right man for the job in place heading into to the SEC. Rod Babers, Matt Butler and Jeff Howe are back and there's a lot to get to on this week's show. The spring transfer portal window is open. While Texas has more players going than coming, the healthy attrition is another sign that Steve Sarkisian has things headed in the right direction over the long haul. How much is the draft stock of T'Vondre Sweat hurting after his recent arrest? Finally, with spring practice wrapping up with the annual Orange-White Spring Game, what's one thing the guys are looking forward to seeing on Saturday? Rod Babers, Matt Butler and Jeff Howe tackle several Texas-related topics on this week's episode of "Longhorn Blitz," starting with Quinn Ewers. How close is the Longhorns' starting quarterback to being considered elite? Where is Ewers trending as he enters what's expected to be his final season on the Forty Acres? The guys also continue to examine the Texas defense and how the arrival of Johnny Nansen might help Pete Kwiatkowski make up for some major personnel losses from last season. Is it fair to expect Texas to be in an expanded College Football Playoff field annually under Steve Sarkisian? That's also part of the discussion on this week's show.
