Ep. 229 (Part 2 of 2) | In part 2 of our What is Real Greatness Series podcast with Margaret Cullen, author of Quiet Strength, Margaret continues to enlighten us about equanimity: its power, its wisdom, and its practice. She relates some of the history of equanimity—first considered a supreme virtue in Stoicism, then passed on to Sufism and Judaism—and explains that throughout time, equanimity (and humility) have always been an integral part of people who have made a true difference in the world. Margaret talks about how humor can break the spell of our trance (“when we lose equanimity, we get caught in a trance, believing in something that has us prisoner—humor breaks the spell”), and, in the spirit of “The Serenity Prayer” (“Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference”), she encourages us to make peace with what we can realistically do and let the rest go.While Part 1 of this dialogue focuses on the power of equanimity in relation to the big picture and what is going on now politically, in Part 2 Margaret looks at practicing equanimity in personal relationships and in our individual lives. She marvels at Thoreau's equanimous approach to his own death, and shares that she has found forgiveness to be the most important equanimity tool in relationships. “We reclaim our wisdom when we say ‘I'm sorry,'” Margaret explains. Margaret's deep and nuanced understanding of the power and practice of equanimity is inspiring and illuminating, and bringing this virtue to our attention as a pragmatic tool we can use is also incredibly timely, leaving us with a sense of hope and empowerment. With winter recreation and mountain town populations booming, more people are recreating in sensitive wildlife habitat. That raises a tricky question: when land managers decide to close a trail or restrict access, and what evidence do they use to make that call? Often, those decisions rely on research from studies done somewhere else, in different places with different conditions. And that can make it difficult for land managers and wildlife advocates to explain those decisions to the public. It also leads to some bigger questions. Is there such a thing as enough wildlife habitat? Is there such a thing as enough trails and outdoor access? What about “enough” trails or outdoor recreation access? And, how do we balance these sometimes-competing uses of public lands?SPEAKERS: Cal Waichler, Project Coordinator, Cascades Wolverine ProjectJoel Sisolak, Lands Planning and Recreation Manager, Washington Department of Fish & WildlifeTrevor Kostanich, AMGA-certified ski guide and authorModerator: Kurt Hellman, Wildlife-Recreation Coexistence Senior Coordinator, Conservation NorthwestRESOURCES:Cascades Wolverine ProjectCommunity Observations MapWolverineWatch.orgConservation Northwest"Your Stoke Won't Save Us"Wintering Wildlife Conservation Initiative Subscribe to Winter Wildlands AllianceWinter Wildlands Alliance Stash BlogWinter Wildlands Alliance Action CenterSUPPORTED BY: Outdoor Alliance, REI Co-op, The Mountaineers, Duct Tape Then Beer/Dirt Bag Diaries, High Country News, Phreem Family Brewers, and University of Washington's Pack Forest.CREDITS:Produced and co-hosted by Anneka Williams and Emily ScottEdited by Adam Titmuss Theme music by Rattlesnake Preachers feat. “It is a world of magic and mystery of deep darkness and flickering starlight. It is a world where terrible things happen and wonderful things too. It is a world where goodness is pitted against evil, love against hate, order against chaos, and where a great struggle often makes it hard to be sure who belongs to which side, because appearances are endlessly deceptive. Yet for all its confusion and wildness it is a world where the battle goes ultimately to the good who live happily ever after and where in the long run everybody, good and evil alike, become known by their true name. That is the fairytale of the gospel.” —Frederick Buechner, Telling the Truth: the Gospel as Comedy, Tragedy, and Fairy TaleFriends,What happens in you when you hear the word desire? Is there a kind of quickening—something like curiosity?Or a hesitation… a guardedness?Maybe a quiet opening that feels like hope.Or a heaviness in your chest that carries sadness.Or even a flash of cynicism. What have you come to believe about desire…in your life with the Triune God,in His Kingdom,in your apprenticeship to Jesus? And what if the recovery—the honoring and stewarding of desire in its purest form—is actually central to your restoration as an image-bearer of God?In this next episode of the Become Good Soil Foundations Series, we explore the recovery of longing and desire. Because at the heart of the Christian story is an arresting claim: that desire, in its essence, is not something to fear—but something given by God, meant to lead us to Him and into His Kingdom. It was the awakening of desire—those fleeting, radiant moments—that first beckoned C. S. Lewis. He described this awakening as joy. And that joy stirred something in him, calling him to search for more. And the same is true for us.Our longing is not a liability. It is part of the way back to joy. Everything we love—every glimpse of beauty, goodness, and delight—is from God, is for God, and ultimately finds its home in Him.The story of the kingdom is a story of desire being gathered up and restored—a great homecoming.Let's press forward together. It's all been prologue. The best is yet to come. For the Kingdom,Morgan & Cherie

In a recent episode of Personal Mastery Training, Alvin explores a concept etched into his psyche over two decades of mentorship: You simply can't dream big enough. Most people aren't failing because they aim for the stars and miss; they are struggling because they aim for the "respectable" and hit it—only to find themselves empty and "flat" once the goal is achieved. Whether you're a student, a professional, or an entrepreneur, this episode is a wake-up call to stop settling for titles and start aiming for an extraordinary legacy. Key Highlights & Strategy The Trap of the "Respectable" Goal: Many high-achievers, like doctors or successful corporate ladder-climbers, hit their initial "dream" only to suffer from compassion fatigue or burnout. Why? Because the dream was a destination (a title), not a continuous impact. The Danger of the "Hollow Victory": As legendary speaker Les Brown said, the tragedy for most isn't setting a goal too high and missing—it's setting it too low and hitting. When you reach a goal that doesn't require you to grow, you're left with a hollow victory and years of life left with no "next step." Success vs. Significance: Ask yourself: Does your current goal merely make you successful, or does it make you extraordinary? If your dream doesn't require you to change your narrative of what is possible, it is likely too small. Focus on the Person, Not the Prize: Borrowing from Jim Rohn, the goal (like becoming a millionaire) isn't about the money; it's about the person you must become to achieve it. The value is in the resilience and growth earned during the struggle. Dynamic Goal Setting: What you wanted at 20 isn't what you need at 50. Visualizing and goal-setting must be a dynamic, evolving process to keep your passion from fading once you've "checked the boxes." Closing Thought Don't settle for hitting the mark only to live in "quiet desperation" later. Expand your dream until it scares you, then grow into the person capable of handling it. As Alvin's mentor, Dr. Tom Hill, says: "One idea, well-executed, can change your life and business forever." What is the one idea from today that you will apply to make your dream bigger?

Join the Women in Seed Production Network as we sit down with Amy Sanders, the Head of Digital and Data Enablement, to explore her nearly 30-year journey from chemist to leadership roles. Amy shares her insights on navigating major career shifts, emphasizing that transferable skills like problem-solving and driving change are far more valuable than technical expertise alone when moving up the ladder. She also breaks down her four essential leadership rules, which involve hiring the best talent, providing clear direction and tools, and ultimately getting out of the way to let teams thrive. The conversation takes a personal turn as Amy recounts a powerful "gut punch" moment involving her young son that taught her the critical importance of advocating for herself and maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Amy further explains the value of finding mentors who ask great questions and surrounding oneself with a "tribe" that offers both support and accountability. Amy leaves listeners with the inspiring message that you can achieve anything you believe you are big enough to do, making this a must-listen for anyone navigating a complex career path.

When Hollywood wouldn't return her calls, Forbes Riley didn't wait for a breakthrough. She created one. With no agent and no clear path forward, she literally acted as her own manager, creating a separate persona, changing her voice, and pitching herself for roles under a fake agency just to stay in the game. This is one of those stories that was too good not to share. This episode is a masterclass in being unapologetically yourself, using “delusion” as a weapon, and doing whatever it takes to create your own path when no one is opening doors for you. We talk about manifestation before it was trendy, why most people unknowingly fight for their own mediocrity, and what actually happens when you stop waiting for validation and start backing yourself fully. If you've ever felt like you were too much, unrealistic, or out of your lane, this conversation might be the permission slip you didn't know you needed and a reminder that the fastest way to change your life is to stop playing small and start believing in yourself all the way. The message highlights how faith can fade across generations, and how God uses unlikely people like Gideon to bring deliverance. When I started my microschool at my dining room table with six children during the pandemic, I thought that was the dream. I thought my purpose was simply to create a safe space for a handful of kids while the world felt uncertain. What I didn't realize then—what I can see so clearly now—is that the school I started wasn't the dream. It was the seed of the dream. And seeds always know how to become more. In this episode, I'm sharing what it truly means to ReDream your life, your school, and your purpose as a teacher, leader, or future microschool founder. This conversation is deeply personal and sets the stage for the historic transition happening in Episode 400—from Teacher Let Your Light Shine to the new movement: ReDream Education. Over the last year, I have been in a constant process of ReDreaming. I've redreamed my school model. I've redreamed how I support neurodivergent and gifted students. I've redreamed how I coach teachers, founders, and educational leaders. I've redreamed the entire way I serve this community. And this episode is where I reveal the truth: A dream is innocent—but a ReDream is informed. A ReDream is the evolution that happens when your dream grows bigger than the place it started. Mike Johnson, Beau Morgan, and Ali Mac let you hear Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. talk about how the team has too much talent on offense for execution issues, react to what Penix Jr. had to say, and talk about how the Falcons offensive line is not big enough to run traditional short yardage plays.

Details and registration here.Soccer is big in Louisville — but is the stadium big enough?LBF Reporter Stephen P. Schmidt is on the Access Louisville podcast this week to talk about his recent interview with John Neace, chairman of Soccer Holdings. Soccer Holdings owns Louisville City FC, Racing Louisville FC and the venue where both teams play — Lynn Family Stadium. The stadium has 11,700 permanent seats, with a total capacity of 15,300 when standing room is considered. But in the interview, Neace told Schmidt efforts are under way to look at ways to increase the capacity to 15,000 permanent seats in an effort to satisfy the requirements of being part of a Division 1 U.S. Soccer league, which the United Soccer League (USL) plans to launch in 2028.Of course, this topic also gets us talking about the recent news that the United Football League's new Louisville Kings franchise is planning to use the venue starting in March. The stadium's size was an ideal fit for the new UFL team — a team that was officially revealed just last week. Late in the show we talk about a couple of other projects going on around town, including the Kentucky Humane Society's new facility. The nonprofit is planning to build a new $37 million Animal & Community Campus off Preston Highway at 1111 Orchard Ave. CEO Alisa Gray recently told LBF's Joel Stinnett. Stinnett is also on this week's show and notes that the approximately 54,000-square-foot headquarters will allow KHS to consolidate the majority of its services and staff into one location, Gray said, while increasing space for dogs and cats by 30%.We also go over the news that a new 27-story tower proposed in Downtown Louisville recently cleared a hurdle with a downtown building getting approval for demolition. If you've ever questioned whether what you do matters because it doesn't look “big” enough, this episode is for you. We live in a world obsessed with visibility, numbers, recognition, applause. But what if your quiet, consistent effort is already making a bigger impact than you realize? Because every thought, every action, every moment you choose love over fear, it all adds up. As I near 300 episodes of Woo Woo Wednesday, I've been reflecting and it made me realize something I think we all forget: the quiet, unseen work counts. The time spent thinking, learning, journaling, processing, it all adds up. It's the deposits that create the real body of work. In this episode, I share: Why your “small” actions create massive ripple effects Why your version of impact matters just as much as anyone else's How to stop chasing visibility and start trusting your presence A powerful perspective shift from my grandpa (one of my guides) that reframed what impact really is You're not here to be another version of what already exists. You're here to be you. And the world needs that. Matt and Andy finally watch the arrival of Worf to DS9, as the MVC song prophesied. And boy, did everybody made a big deal out of Sisko's shaved head and the arrival of Worf being harbingers of awesomeness for the show...... but maybe they didn't make a BIG ENOUGH deal of how awesome it was about to get?[Episode discussion begins around 52 minutes in]
