Ryan Herron shatters this stereotype with his refreshingly calculated approach to adventure. "Adrenaline is what you get when you mess up," he explains, revealing how methodical preparation underpins his seemingly risky pursuits.Ryan takes us behind the scenes of Skatewives, the popular social media account he created with his wife Emily during their van life adventures across America. What began as Emily reluctantly filming Ryan's skateboarding tricks blossomed into content that humorously bridges the gap between skateboarding insiders and outsiders. Through Emily's fresh perspective, viewers gain insight into skateboarding culture's peculiar rituals that seasoned skaters take for granted. The conversation explores how skateboarding's unique mindset shapes character and decision-making. "I don't know that there's any other facet of my life where I have attempted something hundreds of times and failed," Ryan reflects, explaining how this perseverance transferred to his career building a cannabis data analytics company and navigating major life transitions. His story demonstrates how the determination to get back up after falling becomes a powerful life philosophy.Ryan's approach to risk—whether in business, relationships, or extreme sports—centers around process mastery rather than reckless abandon. A harrowing story about parachute line twists inside a cloud illustrates his thoughtful relationship with danger, where respect for risk leads to better preparation rather than fear-based avoidance. For anyone looking to push their boundaries while staying grounded, Ryan's journey offers a masterclass in calculated adventuring.Ready to explore the unexpected wisdom that comes from falling a thousand times, only to get up and try again? This episode will change how you think about risk-taking, perseverance, and finding flow in life's most challenging moments.Dang, if you read this far leave a comment below of you favorite animal and your favorite thing to do. What happens when a passion for skateboarding meets a life of public service? Join us as we navigate the fascinating journey of John Bogaerts, a former professional skateboarder turned dedicated police officer. Along with his close-knit friends Mike Cossettini and Sean Mussett, known affectionately as Gravel Burns, John takes us back to the birth of the Newcastle skateboarding scene. From the early days at Bar Beach in 1979, where fiberglass quarter pipes first made their mark, to the vibrant community that blossomed from these beginnings, we reminisce about the friendships and experiences that defined this era.We explore the impact of missions to the USA, and icons like Lee Ralph and Gregor Rankin on Newcastle's skating standards. John shares stories of regular road trips to Mona Vale vert ramp, the sheer excitement of competing at the infamous Ridge Street ramp in Mereweather, and then the iconic Bowl-a-rama events at Bondi many years later against the likes of Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero and Kevin Staab. This episode is somewhat of a heartfelt exploration of the many facets of a skater's life, including John's transition to law enforcement and the eventual reconnection to his skateboarding roots. John discusses the thrill of premier skate facilities emerging from bold visions and the camaraderie of community-driven events like the Australian Bowl Riding Championships. There's a full video production this week in which John shares never before seen archival pictures and footage. Greg Lutzka is a professional skateboarder and entrepreneur from Milwaukee, WI. Greg's career has spanned decades and his list of accomplishments goes on and on. His new documentary titled "One Way Ticket" is now available on Amazon and gives a great summary of his career so far. Greg dropped out of high school and moved to California to chase his dreams of being a pro skateboarder. It didn't take long for that dream to become a reality. Throughout his career Greg had pro models on Illenium, Krooked, Almost, and Darkstar before creating his own line of skateboards that are now sold in Walmart locations worldwide. Greg has had numerous video parts and won nearly every major skateboard contest on the planet throughout his twenties. He was one of the first pro skateboarders to branch out of the skateboard industry and rode for major corporate brands including Toyota, Visa, Rockstar, K-Swiss, and more. Eventually his window as a top pro began to close he turned to entrepreneurship and became even more successful. He now stays busy with his dozens of properties, businesses, his tv show on Fuel TV, and more. We recorded this episode at Billy Duece's studio in Milwaukee on a recent trip back home for Greg. What was meant to be a one hour visit turned into 3 hours of conversation on and off the mic. In this episode we discuss his transition into entrepreneurship, investing at a young age, his plans to teach others, his new documentary, top skateboarding moments, the school of life, giving back, how to negotiate with brands, and why it's all worth it.
