Airports: at their most basic level places to fly from to reach destinations near and far. And yet so much more. Iszi Lawrence and guests take a look at the evolution of airports, from their beginnings as military airstrips to the modern-day behemoths with their luxury shopping outlets, gardens and art galleries. The early European airports were modelled on railway stations, as that was the only blueprint for a transport hub. The public became so enthralled by air travel that airports eventually became popular as destinations in themselves. Airports today are places filled with emotion: the scene of farewells and arrivals, as well as the stress of international travel in an age of terrorism.Iszi is joined by cultural historian Alastair Gordon, author of Naked Airport: A Cultural History of the World's Most Revolutionary Structure; Lilia Mironov, an architectural historian and air steward who wrote Airport Aura: A Spatial History of Airport Infrastructure; and architect and airport planner Su Jayaraman who teaches at the University of Westminster in London. Plus a range of Forum listeners from around the world contribute their personal experiences of airports.Produced by Fiona Clampin for BBC World Service.(Photo: John F. On the morning of August 19th, 1993, mid-century architect, Norman Jaffe, parked his car in his client's driveway, walked to Ocean Beach in Bridgehampton, New York, stripped down, folded his clothes, and dove into the Atlantic. He never returned and his body was never recovered. Was it murder? Was it suicide? Did he fake his own death? What happened to Norman Jaffe? Clever Confidential is Clever's offshoot series, where we dig into the darker side of design - the shadowy, sometimes sordid tales hiding under a glossy topcoat of respectable legacy.Special thanks to our sponsor, Porkbun! Who is going to these places? To answer, we will of course, unpack the story of the entire airport -- how these hellish modern places of security and commerce came to be. Alastair Gordon talks to legendary fashion designer Calvin Klein about creating a Hamptons beach house for himself. Calvin describes the long and painstaking process of collaboration he went through to create his own minimalist sanctuary on a sweeping ocean-front property in Southampton, NY. In the process, he treated every surface and material with the same intense attention to detail he used in his collections. As Calvin says in the podcast, “If I hadn't been a fashion designer, I would have become an architect.” Host: Alastair Gordon Guest: Calvin Klein With Edwina Von Gal (landscape designer), Fred Stelle (architect), and Michael Lomont (architect). The relationship between Christianity and the arts has always been one of extremes. For long periods of time and in different cultural settings, the two parties have got on fabulously: strengthening faith, promoting beauty, booming out an arresting prophetic voice and working for the common good. At other times… well, it's been a bit of a car crash. Recently, there has been a growing feeling that it's time to attend to this relationship again. Fix broken bridges. Re-examine sources of contention. Explore new ways to co-exist for the flourishing of all. Faith in the Arts is a new podcast that wants to move this conversation forward. And this is our pilot! We're raising money on Kickstarter to record, produce and promote the first season. In this first episode, we introduce the team: Marlita Hill, founder of the Kingdom Artist Initiative as well as a choreographer and author, residing in Southern California. Alastair Gordon, co-founder of Morphē Arts, painter and art tutor at Leith School of Art, Edinburgh. Jonny Mellor, co-founder of Sputnik Faith and Arts, hip-hop artist and church leader, living in Birmingham, UK. Marlita, Alastair and Jonny discuss what they love about the arts, how their experiences of faith spaces affected them, and why there is still need for conversation and encouragement among artists who belong to the church: why there's still room for one more podcast. If you enjoy the conversation, don't forget to support us on Donately!
Alastair Gordon explains "Why Art Matters". Elaine Brown reminds us "There's a work for Jesus none but you can do". Malcolm Guite reads his version of Psalm 39. Larry Gentis brings to life Joseph's entanglement with Potiphar's wife.

Alastair Gordon is a professional and accomplished artist who exhibits around the world. He's also a follower of Jesus. Apparently following Jesus and being a professional artist is a rather tricky thing these days, so we spoke to Ally about this tension and what mission in the world of art might look like.
