Boeren in Nederland raken steeds verder in de knel door de aanhoudende droogte en temperaturen tot rond de 35 graden, zegt Tineke de Vries, voorzitter van de vakgroep Akkerbouw van LTO Nederland. Beregeningsverboden maken het redden van gewassen lastig, oogsten dreigen fors lager uit te vallen en dat kan leiden tot hogere prijzen voor groente en fruit, terwijl het Nationaal Hitteplan en code geel van het KNMI vooral kwetsbare groepen moeten beschermen tegen de hitte. In Brussel staat de bestorming van de Spaanse enclave Ceuta bovenaan de agenda, na de massale oversteek van naar schatting 50.000 Marokkaanse migranten en tientallen doden. Europese ministers van Binnenlandse Zaken overleggen de komende dagen over strengere bewaking van de buitengrenzen, terwijl hoogleraar Arbeids- en Migratiegeschiedenis Leo Lucassen benadrukt dat Europa een grote behoefte aan arbeidsmigranten heeft en het huidige grensbeleid vooral symboolpolitiek is. De komende dagen wordt het belangrijk om de snelheidsmeter in de auto extra in de gaten te houden. Niet alleen in Nederland, maar in heel Europa wordt een flitsmarathon gehouden. Volgens Jorn de Vries, managing director bij Flitsmeister, ligt de focus op alle wegen. Het is dus oppassen geblazen op de snelweg, maar ook in dorpskernen en op omliggende wegen. In Nazi-occupied Amsterdam during World War II, young Hendrika de Vries witnessed extraordinary courage. Her family hid a Jewish child in their home, and she watched her mother join the Dutch Resistance and withstand interrogation at gunpoint after the child was discovered and taken away. These experiences would shape a lifetime devoted to resilience, hope, and helping others find their strength.   Hendrika's remarkable journey spans continents and generations. From her childhood in wartime Holland to her teenage years as an immigrant and champion swimmer in 1950s Australia, and later as a young wife and mother in the turbulent United States of the 1960s, her life story is one of perseverance, adaptation, and purpose.       As a young swimming instructor in Australia, Hendrika experienced a defining moment when she helped a boy whose legs had been paralyzed by polio learn to trust his upper body and move through the water. Watching him discover his own strength revealed a calling that would eventually lead her to become a family therapist in the United States.   Today, Hendrika de Vries is a retired family therapist, teacher, and writer with a background in theology and depth psychology. Addiction, Accommodation, and Vulnerability in Psychoanalysis: Circles Without a Center (Routledge, 2022) explores the compulsions and trauma that underlie addiction, using an intersubjective approach in seeking to understand the inspirations and challenges arising from the psychoanalytic treatment of addiction, compulsivity, and related dissociative conditions. Drawing on insights from his own analytic practice and personal experience, in addition to the work of Stolorow, Brandchaft and Winnicott, among others, Haber considers the complex ways in which addiction becomes woven into a person's life, and analyses how it interacts with other problems such as depression and anxiety, self-fragmentation, and ambivalence about treatment. Haber creatively integrates the work of Camus, Kafka, and Beckett to further contemplate the dilemmas that can arise during the clinical process and, in identifying his own and his patients' vulnerabilities and contradictions, provides an honest, humorous and sometimes painful account of what happens in the consulting room. With its use of rich clinical material and an accessible and vivid writing style, this book will appeal to all psychoanalysts and psychotherapists working with patients affected by addiction, as well as other professionals seeking new insights into effective strategies for treating this most challenging malady. Editor – Greg O'Bryant Tuner editor Greg O'Bryant returns to the podcast to discuss cutting a film that is part crime thriller, part romance, part character study, part music movie and part very compelling argument for keeping your ears covered in New York City. Directed by Academy Award-winning documentary filmmaker Daniel Roher, Tuner stars Leo Woodall as Niki, a gifted piano tuner whose hypersensitive hearing makes every day sound almost unbearable. That same extraordinary hearing also gives Niki an unexpected talent for cracking safes, pulling him from a quiet life of tuning pianos into an increasingly dangerous criminal world. The film also stars Dustin Hoffman as Harry, Niki's mentor, Havana Rose Liu as Ruthie, a young composer, along with Lior Raz, Jean Reno and Tovah Feldshuh. One of the biggest challenges on Tuner was the sheer amount of footage. Roher shot a large volume of material over a short production schedule, giving Greg and his assistant a mountain of performances, musical material, safe-cracking details and improvisation to shape into the final film. Greg discusses how he approached that process by focusing on subjectivity — using the edit to put the audience inside Niki's experience rather than simply moving through the plot. Sound was another major topic of conversation. Because Niki experiences the world through hyper-sensitive hearing, the editorial and sound teams had to build a language for when the audience enters his point of view.  Which meant figuring out how much of that experience to hear, and how to make the effect clear without making it punishing. O'Bryant also talks about working with sound designer Johnnie Burn, composer Will Bates and executive music producer Marius de Vries to balance the film's sound design, live music and score.
