This week on the Cut to the Race Podcast, host Oli and his panel of Abby, Sam and James M tackle the first half of the 2022 season review. In this episode, it's the bottom seven teams from Constructors' Championship and their drivers. Who exceeded expectations, who failed to deliver, and what can we expect from their respective 2023s? Quiz '22 This week's quiz is all things 2022. How closely was the panel paying attention this season, as they try to count everything from drivers to retirements and list the calendar in order?  The battle for P4 An intense fight between the two was somewhat overshadowed by internal dysfunction. McLaren started terribly, but quickly recovered. Well, half their line-up did, at least… Alpine were quick from the get-go, but were plagued by poor reliability. Well, half their line-up was, at least… Personnel changes for next season will see shifts in team dynamic, but will they continue their fight for best of the rest? A tale of two teams Alfa Romeo and Aston Martin had divergent seasons yet converged at 55 points apiece. Alfa took a step forward, whilst Aston took a step back. Valtteri Bottas was a revelation Alfa, but how did his rookie teammate fare? A surprisingly slow start for Aston made way for a resurgent Sebastian Vettel, who provided his own summer surprise. Did Haas flatter to deceive? After an abysmal 2021 season, the only way was up for Haas. With Nikita Mazepin sacked during the off-season, Kevin Magnussen shocked and delighted in equal measure with P5 on his return to F1 at the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix. Exciting early season form eventually tailed off, but Mick Schumacher remained costly for the team. KMAG dovetailed the campaign with feel good performances, whilst Schumacher peaked mid-year. That wasn't enough to save him, as Magnussen's old foe replaces Mick for 2023. Falls from grace Perhaps the teams most disappointed with 2022 will be AlphaTauri and Williams – though admittedly, that's to be expected as they finished P9 and P10. AlphaTauri ran Haas close, but Pierre Gasly was unable to extract as much from the car as he did in previous years. Yuki Tsunoda took a step forward, or so it seemed, but struggled after securing his future for 2023, when Gasly will enjoy pastures new. Can his replacement, Nyck de Vries, deliver on the promise of his Monza cameo? Williams might have provided that opportunity to De Vries, but it's Logan Sargeant who has benefitted from a changing of the guard there. He replaces Nicholas Latifi, whose season never really got going. He partners Alex Albon, who was a bright spot in an otherwise frustrating season that saw Williams fall back to the foot of the standings. -- Keep up to date with all the latest Formula 1 News @ www.formulanerds.com -- Follow Us: Facebook - www.Facebook.com/FormulaNerds Twitter - www.twitter.com/Formula_Nerds Instagram www.instagram.com/FormulaNerds -- For Advertising & Sponsorship Opportunities:- Email Business@FormulaNerds.com Learn more about your ad choices. This episode delves into the murky world of cryptocurrency and its impact on our planet. Join Katharine and Leah as they discover how digital currencies are breathing new life into previously shuttered coal plants across the United States.  This episode features Alex de Vries, data scientist and founder of Digiconimist, an online platform that tracks Bitcoin's energy consumption; Anne Hedges, the director of policy and legislative affairs at watchdog organization Montana Environmental Information Center; and New York State Assemblymember Anna Kelles, who sponsored a bill to establish a two-year moratorium on crypto mining in New York. Leah mentions this White House report about the climate impacts of cryptocurrency. Alex points out how famous cryptographer Hal Finney foresaw crypto's huge emissions from the start. Anne mentions how China cracked down on cryptocurrency, which has pushed companies to operate in other nations, including the United States. Assemblymember Kelles warns that Bitcoin won't deliver on equity or access to wealth: roughly 0.01% of wallets hold 27% of the currency. On the bright side, Ethereum, the second-largest cryptocurrency, just reduced its energy consumption 99% by switching to proof-of-stake.  Next time, we'll look at the fight for climate accountability within corporate America. Once upon a time, the Persian king of all kings, Shahryār, beheaded his wife after discovering she was unfaithful. Overcome with rage, the monarch resolved to exact revenge on womankind by taking a new wife each night and beheading her the next morning. After most of the eligible women in the kingdom had either fled or been killed, Scheherazade, the daughter of the king's advisor, devised a scheme to save herself and future victims. Scheherazade insisted on marrying the monarch, and on their first night together she told him a story, without revealing the ending. The king permitted her to live another day to finish her tale, and so she continued with her cliffhangers for 1,001 nights. Eventually, Scheherazade's stories caused the king to have a change of heart, realise the injustices he had wrought and cease his vengeful rampage. Scheherazade, the narrator of the tales of One Thousand and One Nights, earned her place as one of the shrewdest heroines in world literature. While this story was set in the Islamic Golden Age, Scheherazade could be considered a highly effective coach or psychotherapist today. Through storytelling techniques, she awakened the king's curiosity, challenged his behaviour and managed to change his outlook on life. Scheherazade's form of psychological intervention can be applied to different situations.   Manfred Kets de Vries is the Distinguished Clinical Professor of Leadership Development & Organisational Change at INSEAD and the Raoul de Vitry d'Avaucourt Chaired Professor of Leadership Development, Emeritus. These 2 tasks are at odds with each other because establishing a therapeutic relationship entails honesty and a sense of safety that can be compromised if young people believe that what they need and deserve (potentially blockers, hormones, or surgery) can be denied them according to the information they provide to the therapist.” This excerpt strongly suggests she doesn't believe in the traditional gatekeeping role a mental-health clinician might play in a situation like this, helping to determine if a young person will benefit from transitioning.https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamapediatrics/article-abstract/2504256Kids — sorry, sorry — “adolescents” — getting double mastectomies at 13 or 14https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29507933/“Suicide Attempts among Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming Adults: Findings of the Naitonal Transgender Discrimination Survey.”https://williamsinstitute.law.ucla.edu/wp-content/uploads/Trans-GNC-Suicide-Attempts-Jan-2014.pdfn.b.: “Without such probes, we were unable to determine the extent to which the 41 percent of NTDS participants who reported ever attempting suicide may overestimate the actual prevalence of attempts in the sample.” And:Finally, it should be emphasized that the NTDS, like all similar surveys, captured information about suicide attempts, not completed suicide. Lacking any information about completed suicide among transgender people (due primarily to decedents not being identified by gender identity or transgender status), it may be tempting to consider suicide attempt data to be the best available proxy measure of suicide death. Data from the U.S. population at large, however, show clear demographic differences between suicide attempters and those who die by suicide. While almost 80 percent of all suicide deaths occur among males, about 75 percent of suicide attempts are made by females. Adolescents, who overall have a relatively low suicide rate of about 7 per 100,000 people, account for a substantial proportion of suicide attempts, making perhaps 100 or more attempts for every suicide death. 13 suicides per 100,000 in a GIDS samplehttps://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10508-022-02287-7Insanely high rate of 2.8% in a Belgian clinical samplehttps://biblio.ugent.be/publication/8706800/file/8707586.pdfT H E G U I D E L I N E SStewart: So these, the guidelines that you wrote, because you were responsible with the endocrine board for writing guidelines of care for endocrinology.Safer: The Endocrine Society, yesStewart: The endocrine society.Yes.Stewart: And that was based on, uh, research papers, data, the things that you saw. None described anything like the months-long assessments de Vries and her colleagues adopted in their research. At most of the clinics, a team of professionals – typically a social worker, a psychologist and a doctor specializing in adolescent medicine or endocrinology – initially meets with the parents and child for two hours or more to get to know the family, their medical history and their goals for treatment. They also discuss the benefits and risks of treatment options. Seven of the clinics said that if they don't see any red flags and the child and parents are in agreement, they are comfortable prescribing puberty blockers or hormones based on the first visit, depending on the age of the child. “For those kids, there's not a value of stretching it out for six months to do assessments,” said Dr Eric Meininger, senior physician for the gender health program at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. “They've done their research, and they truly understand the risk.”2020 Finnish studyhttps://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31762394/Those who did well in terms of psychiatric symptoms and functioning before cross-sex hormones mainly did well during real-life. None of it made sense to her until she discovered a community of women online who describe similar symptoms and have one thing in common: All had taken a drug called Lupron. Thousands of parents chose to inject their daughters with the drug, which was approved to shut down puberty in young girls but also is commonly used off-label to help short kids grow taller. The drug's pediatric version comes with few warnings about long-term side effects. It is also used in adults to fight prostate cancer or relieve uterine pain and the Food and Drug Administration has warnings on the drug's adult labels about a variety of side effects. More than 10,000 adverse event reports filed with the FDA reflect the experiences of women who've taken Lupron. The reports describe everything from brittle bones to faulty joints. In interviews and in online forums, women who took the drug as young girls or initiated a daughter's treatment described harsh side effects that have been well-documented in adults.Caroline Jemsbyhttps://www.journalismfund.eu/journalists/carolina-jemsbyGULDSPADENhttps://archive.ph/wip/GFuryClip in questionhttps://drive.google.com/file/d/1bL4WWMCs46dCKweZzz0gBj1AqE62k3oj/view?usp=sharingFull unlocked interview with JesseGLAAD is glad journalists are falling in linehttps://www.glaad.org/blog/jon-stewart-sets-record-straight-gender-affirming-carehttps://www.glaad.org/blog/john-oliver-explains-why-gender-affirming-care-is-so-importantBut sometimes nothttps://www.glaad.org/gap/jesse-singalJesse's response to the original version of his page (he hasn't yet responded to the new one, which went up after this, because life is short): The TikTok Doc yeets some teetshttps://www.nytimes.com/2022/09/26/health/top-surgery-transgender-teenagers.htmlWhoops:Dr. Gallagher of Miami said that she follows up with patients for up to a year. “I can say this honestly: I don't know of a single case of regret,” Dr. Gallagher said in May, adding that regret was much more common with cosmetic procedures. But one of her former top surgery patients, Grace Lidinsky-Smith, has been vocal about her detransition on social media and in news reports. “I slowly came to terms with the fact that it had been a mistake born out of a mental health crisis,” Ms. Lidinsky-Smith, 28, said in an interview. So basically, these clinicians are claiming top surgery has incredibly low regret rates, but they're simply not bothering to keep in touch with their patients. And one year is not very long for followup on this — if you give a kid top surgery at 15 or 16, one of the questions is whether, as their peers sexually develop and start families, they'll at some point wish they had breasts. It's a totally natural, important question, and you can't answer it if your patients are disappearing into the void just one year after you perform surgery on them.Age guidelineshttps://www.cdc.gov/hiv/policies/law/states/minors.htmlOliver: So the benefits of providing care are immense and the risks of withholding it are dire. A survey of around 28,000 trans people found that of those who wanted hormone therapy and didn't receive it 58% reported suicidal thoughts in a given year, which is why the three major professional associations of Child and Adolescent doctors, psychologists and psychiatrists have endorsed gender affirming care and condemned efforts to deny it. https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0261039This study is ridiculous and doesn't even show any correlation between access to hormones and improvement on the more serious suicide measures anywayOliver: You may have seen or heard from a small subset of people who D transitioned but it is worth noting such cases are rare and highly individualized. Formula One headed to Suzuka for the Japanese Grand Prix, which was a race of two halves with a red flag session in between. With a lot to unpack, the panel discuss the events leading up to Max Verstappen being crowned World Champion of 2022. With mixed conditions in the free practice sessions, the weekend was looking to be quite the show with the focus on Pierre Gasly and Nyck de Vries, who have confirmed F1 seats for 2023. The trio talk about their moves before diving into Qualifying, which saw some unexpected performances from the likes of Sebastian Vettel and some close calls for Charles Leclerc. The topic of conversation then moved on to the Grand Prix. The panel talk about the opening lap chaos that saw Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon retire, and a very close call for Vettel, before dissecting the incident regarding Gasly and a tractor being on track. After sharing their own views and those of other drivers, the trio then review the 40-minute-or-so Grand Prix that many on-track battles, a championship-deciding penalty and the confusion, from the media and Verstappen himself, over whether he was champion. The metaverse promises social connection on steroids; very effective when we are all locked in on quarantine, which hopefully never happens again. There are some projects seeking to really be on the frontlines of web3 social. One such project I discovered last week is Bit Hotel. Kareem de Vries, Head of Partnerships, is here today to talk about Bit Hotel as a new social metaverse gaming environment powered by NFTs. Full Show Notes: Nifty.Show/182 Time stamps: 00:00 - Intro 01:32 - What is the purpose or mission of having a space like BitHotel? 02:40 - There are a lot of social spaces online that include customized 2D or 3D representations of an individual, but you integrated Bit Hotel with blockchain. How does that fit into the vision and the purpose of the BitHotel platform? 03:35 - I'm looking at the trailer at the website, Bithotel.io, it has this very retro pixel flavor to it and the isometric view to it. Not everything has to be cutting edge, state of the art graphics. 04:17 - The inspiration behind BitHotel includes the flash player games from the early days of the Internet, like the Sims, Runescape, Minecraft and more. These games were not only extremely fun to play, but also because of the social aspect, which we are enhancing via blockchain technology and digital asset ownership. 05:33 - Check out the hotel! It is currently 54 floors, which are available for purchase via NFT. 06:52 - Is there a finite supply of these plots? Eventually, you sell out of these things and there is no more. Would you expand the hotel to accommodate the interested buyers? 09:10 - Why are there different rarities for characters and how does that apply to the metaverse? 10:20 - How do players engage with the play-to-earn system you've built into the hotel? 12:05 - It looks like the $BTH is your token on the Binance Smart Chain. One BUSD equals 164 $BTH, so if you want to get an idea of what it takes to mint a character, the least expensive character … a few dollars? 13:25 - The game is in beta; how do you get in to play the beta game? 14:00 - Is this an ongoing launch? 15:45 - Joel is registering an account; what happens when you refer your friends with the referral code at sign-up? 16:21 - The other things that are tokenized aside from the floors and the characters; what other objects are tokenized in the game? 16:55 - Joel is touring the hotel and accidentally bombs himself. 19:05 - There is no barrier to entry; someone can sign in and play without a wallet connected and no up-front investment. 19:59 - I see a bartender; can I get a drink? 21:13 - What can you tell us about the roadmap? 24:55 - Outro  SUBSCRIBE, RATE, & REVIEW: Podcasts: http://nifty.show/itunesSpotify: http://nifty.show/spotifyStitcher: http://nifty.show/stitcherGoogle Play: http://nifty.show/playiHeart: https://nifty.show/iheartYouTube: http://badco.in/youtube FOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIA: Twitter: @theniftyshow - @badcryptopod - @joelcomm - @finallyaligned Facebook: /TheNiftyShow /BadCryptoPod /JoelComm LinkedIn: /in/joelcomm Instagram: @BadCryptoPodcast DISCLAIMER: Do your own due diligence and research.
