TRACKS 1-Blues For D.P. (Ron Carter) 2-Just Enough (Herbie Hancock) 3-French Connections (Igor Butman) 4-Something Borrowed, Something Blue (Tommy Flanagan) 5-Lullaby For Shana Bly (Grover Washington Jr.) 6-Stolen Moments (Oliver Nelson) 7-In a Sentimental Mood (Duke Ellington, Manny Kurtz, Irving Mills) 8-Stella by Starlight (Victor Young, Ned Washington) CREDITS Grover Washington Jr. – soprano saxophone (1, 6, 8), tenor saxophone (2–5), alto saxophone (7) Igor Butman – tenor saxophone (3, 6, 8) Herbie Hancock – grand piano (1, 2, 5) James "Sid" Simmons – grand piano (3, 6, 8) Tommy Flanagan – grand piano (4, 7) Richard Lee Steacker – guitars (3, 6) Ron Carter – double bass (1, 2, 5) Gerald Veasley – 5-string electric bass (3, 6, 8) Grady Tate – drums (1) Marvin "Smitty" Smith – drums (1, 2, 5) Darryl Washington – drums (3, 6, 8) Miguel Fuentes – percussion (3, 6, 8)

Send us a Text Message. When Lee Finkelstein lays down a beat, it's not just rhythm—he's telling a story, painting a landscape. It's a philosophy I, John Simeone, share wholeheartedly. Our recent conversation took us on a tour through the world of drumming, where we unpacked the essence of what it means to truly play for the music. Lee, with his wealth of experience across genres, emphasizes the idea that serving the song trumps personal showmanship. We riff on the camaraderie between drummers, the joy found in simplicity, and the magnetic pull of a groove that unites a band. The heartbeat of our episode pulses with discussions on live performance and the wisdom Lee shares gleaned from playing with legends like the Blues Brothers band and stepping in for David Garibaldi with Tower of Power. As we explore the shifting tides of the music industry, we offer nuggets of advice for up-and-coming drummers striving to stay relevant. Join us as we share stories of triumph, the humbling moments of our careers, and the lessons that resonate beyond the stage. It's a rhythmic ride that speaks to the core of every musician's spirit.Lee has recorded, performed with and backed up Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Nancy Wilson, Grover Washington Jr, Eric Gale, The Oregon Symphony Orchestra & Randy Brecker, Isaac Hayes, Eddie Floyd, Bette Midler, Blood Sweat & Tears, Russ Freeman, Julio Iglesias, Frankie Paul, Johnny Winter, Steve Cropper, Lou Marini, Will Lee, Paul Shafer, John Tropea, Leon Pendarvis, Alan Rubin, Saturday Night Live, Dave Valentine, Cornelius Bumpus, Anthony Jackson, Mary Wilson, Daryl Hall, John Oates, Hudson River Rats, Joey Ramone, Vaneese Thomas, Mario Cruz, Jens Wendelboe, Don Blackman, Oz Noy, Buzz Feiten, Neil Jason, Deena Miller, Dave Fields, Jay Prince, Bill Heller, Cosmic Oven, Derretub Snub, Hadrian Decree, Red Flannel Hash Band, Small Talk/Jim Small Band, The Paper Bag, Timberwolf, Yasgur's Farm, Jim Pin Band 5+2-1, Eclipse, Funk Filharmonik, The Zen Tricksters, Major Domo, Chick Singer Night NYC, Jonny Rosch, Bobby Harden, Stevie Cochran, Ed Palermo Big Band, Napoleon Murphy Brock, Wycliff Gordon, Marc Ribler, Jack Daley, JT Bowen, Southside Johhny, Bowling For Leftovers, Dead On Live, Felix Cavaliere and The Rascals, Felicia Collins, David Spinozza, Vernon Reid, Corey Glover, Bill Murray, Chris Noth, Ben Vereen, Friends of the Brothers, the Royal Scam and Paul Sorvino. We have nothing, but heartfelt admiration and respect for every listener to The Paul Leslie Hour. We're bringing to you an interview from our radio archives with the late, great Ralph MacDonald. This was recorded by phone in 2008. Ralph was born in Harlem, New York in 1944 and passed away in Stamford, Connecticut in 2011. In the interview, the Legendary Ralph MacDonald checked in from New Orleans Jazz Fest to discuss his album, "Mixty Motions.” That's m-i-x-t-y. A producer, songwriter, percussionist, performer and Grammy-award winner, Ralph MacDonald had roots in the Caribbean. With his songwriting team of William Salter and William Eaton, Ralph wrote “Where is the Love?,” “Just the Two of Us,” “Mister Magic” and more. His songs were covered by artists like Bill Withers, Grover Washington Jr, Roberta Flack, Harry Belafonte, Jimmy Buffett and others. The son of Calypsonian MacBeth the Great, Ralph MacDonald went onto be a member of Harry Belafonte's band when he was young. For over 20 years he was an important member of Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefer Band, as the percussionist. His last album “Mixty Motions” is a fusion of the many styles of music Ralph embraced from Jazz, African Rhythms, Calypso, Samba and others. This was Paul's second time speaking with Ralph MacDonald, and this interview is fascinating. MacDonald shared opinions, history, and his philosophy on music. The Music Snobs presents... TMS Black Label – the first in an annual series on the classic Black music record labels of our time, starting with the legendary CTI Records. A label famous for a locked-in instrumental groove, cutting edge engineering, and a house full of superstars, The Music Snobs declare that the CTI never sleeps – but did it really? Was the label justifiably infamous for targeting a more radio-focused sound than Impulse or Blue Note, and did it inadvertently lead to the creation of the dreaded Smooth Jazz? And what is 'Jazz' anyway? In a sprawling conversation ranging from George Benson to Herbie Hancock, from Ron Carter to Grover Washington Jr., TMS drops a manifesto on race, taste, culture, the problem with genres, and the harmful divisions in Black American Music. Next up, the crew brings back a 'versus' to debate 'Nautilus' vs. 'Take Me To The Mardi Gras' – two classic songs by CTI alum Bob James, asking: which of these often-sampled, classic CTI recordings can Hip-Hop not do without? Get ready for an episode with as many difficult questions as hilarious insights, with just the right sprinkling of snobbery.
Just the two of us”.
