Cecil Bartholomew aka Mr. B was born in Curepe, Trinidad, attended Presentation College in Chaguanas, worked at the license office then moved to the US to study. He gained a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the Polytechnic Institute in New York, bolstered by further studies in Artificial Intelligence at MIT as well as jazz and classical guitar. He served as an International Engineering Manager at Electronic Signature Analysis Technologies with Xerox for 30 years, in the US, South America, Europe, Middle East, Africa and Australia, innovating strategic technologies to enhance component reusability. He returned to the Caribbean in 2000 as ICT director for OECS [Organization of eastern Caribbean States] under the leadership of the then Prime Minister of Grenada, Carriacou and Petit Martinique, Dr. Keith C. Mitchell. Mr. B resides in Saint George's, Grenada. He is a world-renowned Classical/Jazz guitar/Arranger/Composer, celebrated for his unique fusion of tropical rhythms and jazz structures and performed as a backup guitarist for visiting artists while he was active in New York City and had a significant performance history during the 1980s and 1990s. Although classically trained, Jazz became the main thrust. After a solo performance Gloucestershire England other performances occurred in Holland, Germany, France, and Australia, when a classical solo album was sold worldwide. Cecil also has two CDs. With a profound passion for music, he coined the term “Kingdom-Guitar,” emphasizing his commitment to integrate music with a powerful message. Cecil's musical journey began in Trinidad and continued in Grenada, where he developed a deep appreciation for the guitar under the mentorship of jazz legends Laurindo Almeida and Kenny Burrell. His compositions often reflect the Bossa Nova rhythm blended with cheerful lyrical jazz solos, creating a vibrant musical landscape in his works. Bartholomew's style, best described as "Tropical Jazz Fusion," artfully combines rock, calypso, and jazz standards, while also incorporating original compositions. As the composer and guitarist for the band, Bartholomew leads the ensemble's exploration of tropical jazz fusion, enhancing their sound through acoustic and electric guitar arrangements. The music produced is a harmonious blend of original works and creatively rearranged covers. Cecil was leader, composer and arranger of 2 bands: Akasa in the US and Quiet Fire in Grenada. His contributions in composition and arrangement helped shape the band's unique sound. He also played the double tenor steel pan and is a dedicated music instructor at Archibald Avenue Music since 2009.Presently retired, Mr. B performs weekly at the prestigious Calabash Hotel in Grenada and at special venues, mostly as a solo artist for the Government of Grenada and at other private events, while recording, teaching and changing the minds and hearts of youths through his music.A man of deep faith and conviction, Bartholomew sees music as a spiritual passage and a vehicle for societal change. He emphasizes discipline, effort, and heartfelt communication throughout, as well as advocating for women.

Mary Martin was perhaps best known as playing the title role in the Broadway production of Peter Pan. The Sinceros [33:23] "Take Me to Your Leader" The Sound of Sunbathing Epic EPC 83632 1979 The sticker on the cover says that this track is their featured single, so that's what I'm going with. Ravi Shankar [39:47] "An Introduction to Indian Music" The Sounds of India Columbia CS 9296 1968 (originally released in 1958) Re-released to tap into the growing interest thanks to the Beatles' interest in Indian music (specifically George Harrison). Scott Walker + Sunn O))) [47:22] "Brando (Dweller on the Bluff)" Soused 4AD CAD 3428 2014 On the surface, it's an odd pairing, but as the music that fills this album suggests, it's a perfect pairing. Sunn O)))'s Greg Anderson and Stephen O'Malley had originally reached out to Walker about contributing to their 2009 album Monoliths and Dimensions but were unable to coordinate. Walker subsequently contacted about contributing drones to fill in the silence between his lyrics while working on his epic 2012 release Bish Bosch. Evidently, Sunn O))) brought their full stage equipment to Walker's studio for recording. If you are unfamiliar, it's a wall of Ampeg, Marshall, and HiWatt speakers with Ampeg SVT and Sunn Model T heads. With over 75 million records sold, six Grammy's, and inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Police are one of the most iconic bands in the world. Although they're no longer making music as a group, each member is still immersed in their creative pursuits, and guitarist Andy Summers is following his all the way to New Zealand. In an exclusive first announcement, Summers will be bringing Kiwi audiences ‘The Cracked Lens + A Missing String', an intimate, multimedia performance full of musical performances, stories, and his celebrated photography. He told Newstalk ZB's Mike Hosking that tickets for the shows are hard to come by and he's getting a standing ovation every night. “So, I think it's going well.” Summers began his foray into photography while touring with the Police in 1979. He said he had plenty of time on his hands and photographers were abundant. “I finally sort of crossed over and got a good camera and said, ‘well, I'm gonna do this,'” he told Hosking. “It turned into, you know, a passion that I stayed with ever since.” When it comes to his photography, Summers favours abstraction, focusing on composition, values, balance, and colour as opposed to interesting faces or scenes. “I think of it in formal properties,” he explained. “Not like, ohhh, that's an exciting moment, you know, that man's doing something to that man, whatever.” This different way of thinking carries through to his music as well, Summers citing a quote from critic Walter Pater: ‘all art constantly aspires to the condition of music'. “I find the information that I had from music is sort of... you can take it across to photography. And again, you know, like in music you would be thinking of line shape, one thing contrasting against another, a structure.” “All these things can be applied to photography.” Summers blends his creative pursuits further, creating scores that go alongside his photographs. His newest EP ‘Vertiginous Canyons', releasing later this month, is a companion for his 2023 photography book ‘A Series of Glances'. He revealed to Hosking that the score is entirely improvised, as he played around until he got sounds that inspired him and built each track off that. “I made those tracks in one afternoon, which I think is very healthy,” Summers laughed. There's often an idea that quality directly correlates with the time something takes, but Summers doesn't believe that matters, saying that some of the greatest things are done in minutes. “I was trying to tell somebody this morning,” he said to Hosking. “You know, you sit there and slog away trying to write something, and then you give up, and the last minute you give up, it suddenly arrives in your head.” While some of it can be attributed to years of training and familiarity with his craft, there is another sort of mysterious element to it: a spark of inspiration. Summers has been playing guitar since he was young, transitioning through styles and genres throughout his life. He grew up playing jazz and classical, learning from people like Kenny Burrell and Jimmy Rainey, and began his professional career in a rhythm and blues band before joining the Police. After their disbandment in 1984, Summers began his solo career influenced by all sorts of music, taking inspiration from the likes of Thelonious Monk and Miles David. “All this was something that I wish to take elements from and kind of build my own style.” "What's more creatively fulfilling, post-Police or the Police?” Hosking asked, which Summers said was a “bit of a cruel question”. “I can't really answer that,” he said. The two are different things Summers told him, with the Police being “the magic band”, something that doesn't come along often, and his solo work being incredibly enjoyable as well. “I've made 15 solo albums and I really dug into it,” Summers said. He's renewed his studio equipment, confirming his plans to create more music in the coming future. “I think we went through a weird time with Covid and everything seemed to have stopped, and now it feels like life is coming back again.” “I'm on the road and I renewed the studio, so yeah, looking forward to it. Feeling good about it.” Tour Dates: 19th September, Opera House, Wellington. 20th September, James Hay Theatre, Christchurch. 3rd October, Town Hall, Auckland. Con Carlos López I Han pasado más de 60 años desde que fuera publicado, pero el aura de este disco permanece intacta. Midnight Blue es uno de los álbumes más admirados y ensalzados en la historia de la música (sin indicar de forma precisa sus posibles etiquetas: blues y/o jazz). Grabado en una única sesión, Kenny Burrell, con su maestría a la guitarra, logró impregnar al novedoso quinteto que formó para la ocasión, el sentimiento que él mismo tenía hacia el blues.

From the Sourced Network Productions, it's the Hot Jazz Network Podcast with host George Cole. Here's a great story to get you started on the episode with Bruce Forman, recounting his early influences and how he found his life's path at the early age of 17 years old. From Bruce FormanMy first jazz guitar player that I really remember loving was Kenny Burrell. Just the bluesy-ness and the elegance and the eloquence of his playing, it was just such a beautiful counterpoint musically, sound wise and feel wise to everything, even though I was much more interested in playing a lot more than he liked to play, a la Charlie Parker. That was my first one, and then Wes just blew my mind, and then Barney Kessel just creamed me, and then, of course, 1972 or 3 was the year Virtuoso Joe Pass came out. And that changed the world for us guitar players. That just changed the world. By then, I guess I was pretty well printed. I was probably about 17 at that time. My first Monterey Jazz Festival I went to in 1973. Joe Pass was there, Roy Eldridge was there, Dizzy Gillespie was there. It was amazing. It was just a mind blowing experience.

Our Jazz Feature takes you back to tan important center of Jazz action in New York in the mid-50`s. The Cafe Bohemia located in Greenwich Village. The band is the first group that master trumpeter Kenny Dorham put together. he called it ``The Jazz Prophets``. Kenny Dorham is one of the finest and original of the early Modern Jazz trumpeters. He came to maturity in the early 1950`s and was a charter member of Art Blakey`s Jazz Messengers. In 1956 he formed The Jazz Prophets. Sadly it was short-lived but made several fine recordings including this one. Kenny Dorham put together J.R. Monterose on tenor saxophone and a very young 19 year old Bobby Timmons on piano, Sam Jones is on bass and the tasty and swinging Arthur Edgehill is on drums. They play a variety of original and standard materiel in this set and are joined on the last tune, Dizzy Gillespie`s ``A Night in Tunisia`` by guitarist Kenny Burrell. All live at The Cafe Bohemia on May 31,1956. Kenny Dorham, tonight`s Jazz Feature artist.
The newest directions in 21st Century trumpet performance are being explored and defined by Courtney Jones, an award-winning Bach performing and recording artist who has also emerged as a leading figure in contemporary performance and pedagogy, conducting, and service to inner-city youth through music outreach programs. An artist who transcends stylistic boundaries and in high demand as a clinician and adjudicator, Courtney has performed with classical ensembles and orchestras throughout the United States, internationally, and has won multiple solo awards and accolades through regional and national trumpet competitions. This journey began in Jones' hometown of Columbus, Georgia. While earning his Bachelor of Music degree at Columbus State University, Courtney performed with various Columbus State University ensembles and recorded with artists such as Jens Lindemann, Joseph Alessi, John Bruce Yeh, and the Columbus State University Wind Ensemble under the Naxos Music label. While completing his Master of Music degree in Trumpet Performance at Shenandoah Conservatory in Winchester, Virginia, Courtney studied under the instruction of J. Carlton Rowe, former Principal Trumpet of the “President's Own” United States Marine Band, Craig Fraedrich of The U.S. Army Blues, and performed as Substitute Principal with the Loudon Symphony Orchestra of Leesburg, Virginia. He also had additional studies with Steve Hendrickson of the National Symphony Orchestra Courtney conducted his doctoral studies at UCLA under the instruction of international soloist and former lead trumpet of the Canadian Brass, Jens Lindemann. During his time at UCLA, Courtney worked as a Teaching Associate for lecture courses and provided weekly lessons for university trumpet students under the direction of Lindemann. Winner of a Gluck Fellowship, Jones was then selected as the conductor of the UCLA Brass Ensemble during the latter part of his residency. His musicological research during this period explored 21st Century ideological and transcendental concepts of performance practice focusing on a lesser-known contemporary work of composer Frank Ticheli, The First Voice for Solo Bb Trumpet. The intention of this dissertation was to broaden the technical capabilities of 21st century performers and shed light on the ideological and philosophical foundations of Ticheli's composition. While the study is largely analytic and interpretive, the main purpose and goal is to help modern trumpet players develop more confidence in performing Ticheli's music and other contemporary compositions in related genres. Before completing his doctorate, Courtney was appointed as the Visiting Assistant Professor of Trumpet at the Voxman School of Music at the University of Iowa. During his two-year residency Jones served as the Principal Trumpet for the Iowa Faculty Brass Quintet, taught Graduate Brass Pedagogy and Literature, and served on recital and graduate committees. He was asked to lead the University's top performing Jazz Ensemble (director on leave) and produced an engaging performance concert by the University's Brass Ensemble (which had previously been inactive for a number of years) to showcase the importance of Brass Bands as an engaging training ground for solidifying technical and pedagogical facility for brass players. In addition to his applied obligations, Courtney performed with Orchestra Iowa, the Dubuque Symphony, and gave solo performances with both the Cedar Rapids Municipal Band and New Horizons Band. One of which was the Midwest Premiere of Kim Scharnberg's Travelogue for Eb Trumpet. Besides performing with well-known jazz and popular artists, he has shared the stage with famous artists or groups such as Kenny Burrell, B.B. King, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Rihanna, Lalo Schifrin, Vanessa Williams, Boy George and The Culture Club, Jennifer Cox, and Stevie Wonder. In addition to his solo performance career, Courtney has performed with the Golden States Pop Orchestra, the Southeast Symphony Orchestra, the Macao Orchestra (China), the Pasadena Orchestra, the Debut Orchestra, the Inspiravi Chamber Orchestra, the Gateways Festival Orchestra, the Orchid City Brass Band, the Oslo Philharmonic (Norway), the Long Beach Opera, the Chamber Singers of Iowa City, the Salt-River Brass Band, the Gateways Brass Collective, and most recently had his Carnegie Hall and Metropolitan Art Museum performance debut this past May in New York. His feature film and television credits include music performed for “Glee,” “Notes from Dad,” “Cougar Town,” and “Criminal Minds” among other productions listed under the media tab of his website. Prior to his appointment at Florida Atlantic University as the Assistant Professor of Trumpet & Artistic Director of Jazz and Chamber Ensembles, Jones was a Lecturer of Music at Columbus State University while recording his Solo CD project, “Between 2 Worlds,” at the Joyce and Henry Schwob School of Music. Between teaching and solo performing engagements, Dr. Jones has and continues to promote music education and instrumental performance in inner-city schools through the Music Outreach Program at UCLA, The Harmony Project of Los Angeles, Trumpets 4 Kids in Dallas, Texas, and the Nat King Cole Generation Hope, Inc. Each of these programs offers schoolchildren art-in-education opportunities. These programs are essential because they provide underserved, inner-city students, and communities with musical training and mentorship that would otherwise be inaccessible.
At the start of his career, the great guitarist Kenny Burrell wrote, “Freddie Bryant is a brilliant young guitarist and composer.” Since then he has shown his versatile skills in jazz, classical, Brazilian, and other world genres. Freddie is currently in demand in the New York jazz scene. He worked with Ben Riley for over a decade with the Monk Legacy Septet (Memories of T on Concord Records) and The Ben Riley Quartet (Grown Folks Music on Sunnyside Records). He has been a member of the Mingus Orchestra since the millennium and has toured and recorded with Tom Harrell (Paradise on RCA). His own group, KALEIDOSCOPE whose CD, Live Grooves…Epic Tales is on the HiPNOTIC record label and features grooves from around the world including Brazil, Cuba, and New Orleans, and influences from blues, gospel, India, and the Middle East. This Spring and Summer celebrate the release of his opus, Upper West Side Love Story, a double CD of his 16-movement song cycle featuring an all-star nonet: Carla Cook – vocals, Regina Carter – violin, Donny McCaslin and Steve Wilson on saxophones and flutes, Gwen Laster and Akua Dixon filling out the string section on viola and cello with the grooving rhythm section of bassist John Benitez and drummer Alvester Garnett. In this episode, Freddie shares his background, education, and musical journey.
