For over a decade, Harold Phifer served in a war-zone as a contract air-controller in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Guantanamo Bay. He even survived a suicide bombing by the Taliban. But none of that was as dangerous or stressful as his upbringing. Phifer was a black kid growing up in the south during the tumultuous 1960s, dealing with racism and bullying in the streets, and abuse at home from his schizophrenic mother and dysfunctional, violent aunt. He felt like an outsider in and out of the house. He tells a moving story in his newest book, My Bully, My Aunt, and Her Final Gift. It comes on the heels of publishing his earlier book, Surviving Chaos: How I Found Peace At A Beach Bar, which exposed a lot of people that affected the life of the author. Besides his problematic mother, his aunt left a lasting imprint. This is a one of a kind story. Don't miss it! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

On this powerful episode of I Am Refocused Radio, we sit down with author and survivor Harold Phifer, whose life reads like a movie script—except it's all real. From growing up in 1960s Mississippi with a schizophrenic mother, an abusive aunt, and the weight of racism and bullying, to surviving a Taliban suicide bombing and navigating war zones as a contract air traffic controller, Harold's story is nothing short of jaw-dropping. We talk about his latest book, My Bully, My Aunt, and Her Final Gift, and unpack how war zones in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Guantanamo Bay felt more peaceful than the chaos of his childhood. With raw honesty and unexpected humor, Harold opens up about the power of writing, the role of humor in healing, and how he learned to survive—by staying quiet, sharp, and unshakably human. This is more than a conversation. It's a testament to the human spirit.https://riseandread.com/Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/i-am-refocused-radio--2671113/support.

State Rep. Barbara Phifer declined to run for another term in the Missouri House, even though she was eligible to spend four more years in the General Assembly's lower chamber. But the Kirkwood Democrat chose instead to run for secretary of state. While the race for that office typically doesn't get as much attention as the U.S. Senate or governor, Phifer said the stakes are high enough for her to throw her hat into the statewide electoral arena. “This is the single most important statewide race in Missouri this year, and I could see that a year and a half ago,” Phifer said on an episode of St. Louis Public Radio's Politically Speaking. “And so I told my husband, even as I was planning to retire: ‘Honey, you just need to know that if we don't have somebody on the Democratic side with experience who's running for secretary of state, I'm going to do that.”

Back in August, Lizzo was sued by a number of her former dancers for creating a hostile work environment, with allegations including racial and sexual harassment, disability discrimination, illegal retaliatory termination and assault, and more. This flew directly in the face of her brand, which champions positivity, inclusivity and authenticity above all else (including even her music). The Sunday Times' Megan Agnew and journalist and culture critic Hanna Phifer join DJ Louie to break down how this scandal has played out for Lizzo, where it fits in with and differs from other pop star scandals past and present, and what, if anything, she can do fix the damage it's caused to her brand and image.
