Here’s what we’re talking about this week on the GeekWire Podcast. Amazon and critics wage a PR war in the company’s first virtual annual meeting. One employee said working at an Amazon warehouse is like getting the "golden ticket," but a former employee and critic talked of "toxicity" in the company's culture. We watched, and cringed, and we’ll tell you all about it. Former employee and activist Maren Costa said: “Toxicity is embedded in our operations as pollution causes stunted lung development, asthma, and higher death rates from COVID-19 concentrated in black and brown communities. This is environmental racism.” The meeting started with vignettes from front-line workers highlighting the company’s investment in fighting COVID-19, expected to cost $4 billion this quarter alone. HBO Max, the new streaming service engineered in Seattle, launches without support from its tech neighbor, Amazon -- and there’s an interesting backstory. The service costs $14.99 a month and includes access to 10,000 hours of content, including original HBO shows, popular movies and classic television. But you won't find it on Amazon's Fire TV. The company contends HBO Max should be part of the current HBO subscription service it offers through Prime. And some iconic entertainment and tech destinations in Seattle -- the Cinerama and Living Computers Museum -- suddenly face an uncertain future and possible demise. We’ll explain why. And we'll discuss why it might make good business sense for Amazon to buy the Cinerama. Vulcan plans to close Vulcan Arts + Entertainment and Vulcan Productions by the end of the year, calling into question whether some of its organizations will ever return. With GeekWire’s Todd Bishop, Monica Nickelsburg and John Cook. Produced by Curt Milton. Theme music by Daniel L.K. Caldwell.
Show #661 Today I’m publishing a bonus episode all about Elon Musk and Tesla’s Chinese launch of the locally made Model 3, plus the Model Y launch there too. Look out for it in your podcast feed or on Youtube. I watched the live stream and have a couple of speeches given made by Elon. But I don’t’ want to dedicate 10 mins of the regular podcast to it, as I occasionally hear from listeners who want a bit of Tesla but not too much. Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 8th January 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. SONY SURPRISES WITH AN ELECTRIC CONCEPT CAR CALLED THE VISION-S "Sony just made what might be one of the biggest surprise announcements at this year’s CES: a car. Called the Sony Vision-S, it’s an electric concept sedan that is meant to showcase the Japanese tech conglomerate’s many different strengths, from entertainment products to camera sensors and more." says The VErge: "The Vision-S features 33 different sensors inside and outside of the car, multiple widescreen displays, 360 audio, and always-on connectivity, with some pieces coming from industry players like BlackBerry and Bosch. It’s also powered by a “newly-designed EV platform” — which appears to have been engineered by automotive supplier Magna — that Sony says will be able to power other vehicle types, like SUVs. Inside, the Vision-S features a dashboard-spanning screen much like the one that Chinese EV startup Byton is putting in its cars, with screens for rear-seat passengers in the headrests." https://www.theverge.com/2020/1/6/21054270/sony-vision-s-electric-concept-car-ev-announcement-ces-2020 MG ZS IS AUSTRALIA’S CHEAPEST EV "MG’s freshly introduced ZS EV electrified small SUV has claimed the title as Australia’s most affordable battery electric vehicle, muscling out the previous cheapest zero-emissions option, the Hyundai Ioniq." according to Which Car.com.au: "The Chinese-owned brand is offering the first 100 customers to place an order for the ZS EV a special driveaway price of $46,990, which undercuts the cheapest electric Ioniq by $1500 following a price increase for the small sedan of about $4000 late last year." https://www.whichcar.com.au/car-news/mg-zs-is-australias-cheapest-ev HYUNDAI LAUNCHES UPGRADED KONA EV IN S. The upgraded Kona Electric, equipped with a 64-kilowatt-per-hour battery, is priced at 47 million won-49 million won (US$40,200-$42,000)." https://www.urdupoint.com/en/business/hyundai-launches-upgraded-kona-ev-in-s-korea-803214.html SOUTH KOREA EXPANDS E-MOBILITY BUDGET "The South Korean government will provide a total of 950 billion won (about 627 million euros) in 2020 to subsidise electric cars and expand the network of charging stations in the country, this signifies a 60 per cent increase from 2019." says electrive.com: "When announcing the new funding for 2020 in September 2019, it said that 738.2 billion won had been earmarked for the purchase premiums for battery electric vehicles and the expansion of the charging infrastructure. Separately from the subsidies for battery electric vehicles, another 359.3 billion won will be added for fuel cell vehicles and hydrogen filling stations." https://www.electrive.com/2020/01/06/south-korea-expands-e-mobility-budget/ BYTON IS LAUNCHING AN APP DEVELOPER PROGRAM FOR ITS M-BYTE ELECTRIC SUV "Byton might be best known for its massive 48-inch wraparound digital dashboard screen in its upcoming M-Byte SUV, as well as a host of other screens sprinkled throughout the vehicle. Those screens might get all the attention, but they are merely the delivery mechanism or “stage” for what Byton hopes will be a smart device on wheels." according to Tech Crunch: "The company announced Sunday ahead of CES, the annual tech trade show in Las Vegas, that it will launch a developer program to unlock the kinds of apps that will turn these screens into an interactive and valuable experience for customers." https://techcrunch.com/2020/01/05/byton-is-launching-an-app-developer-program-for-its-m-byte-electric-suv/ AMAZON FIRE TV WILL BE IN NEW BMWS, SO YOU CAN STREAM JUST LIKE IN A TESLA "Fiat Chrysler and BMW, both of which are no stranger to testing new tech, announced at CES on Monday that it will soon offer TV streaming from Amazon's Fire TV in some of its new vehicles." reports Mashable: "The streaming service will be available in some BMW and Chrysler cars as an entertainment option on dashboard screens already built into the car.
