This marked the lowest temperature recorded in February since 1923. - Iguanas dropping from tress all over the streets - Iguanas can survive temperatures down to the mid-40s Fahrenheit (around 7°C) by entering a "cold-stunned" state, where they appear dead but are just temporarily paralyzed and immobile; however, prolonged exposure to temperatures in the 30s and 40s, especially below freezing, can be lethal, particularly for smaller individuals, leading to tissue damage and organ failure. - They get sluggish below 50°F (10°C) and fall from trees as they lose grip. - The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) issued Executive Order 26-03 on Friday, allowing residents to collect and surrender cold-stunned green iguanas without a permit during an unprecedented cold weather event. Right on Schedule - Remember we talked about how the Nat Gas price was going to reverse, just as quickly as it spikeed? - Nat gas down 25% today - down about 28% from recent high - Still about 50% higher than it was before the spike. THIS! - Nvidia Corp. Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang said the company's proposed $100 billion investment in OpenAI was “never a commitment” and that the company would consider any funding rounds “one at a time.” - “It was never a commitment,” Huang told reporters in Taipei on Sunday. “They invited us to invest up to $100 billion and of course, we were, we were very happy and honored that they invited us, but we will invest one step at a time.” Then Oracle announced that it will do a fundraiser in the form of equity and debt - needs to fund more datacenter build-out. - What happened to the OpenAI $300 Billion committment? - Or is the money that NVDA "committed to OpenAi, that they must have committed to Orcle, not a committment - GIGANTIC CIRCLE JERK Fungus - -Interesting - Did you know? Botrytis cinerea, a fungus causing grey mold, affects grapes by causing bunch rot, ruining fruit in high humidity. - While it often destroys crops, specific dry, warm conditions can transform it into "noble rot," concentrating sugars and creating high-value dessert wines (e.g., Sauternes, Tokaji) with honeyed, raisin-like, and apricot flavors. January Economic Review Employment — Job growth was nearly flat in December, with 50,000 new jobs added and earlier months revised lower. — Unemployment dipped slightly to 4.4%, but it's still higher than it was a year ago. — Long-term unemployment didn't change and remains high, and the labor force participation rate slipped to 62.4%. — Average hourly earnings rose 0.3% in December and are up 3.8% over the past year. — Weekly jobless claims stayed close to last year's levels, showing a labor market that is cooling but not weakening sharply. FOMC / Interest Rates — The Federal Reserve kept interest rates unchanged at 3.50%–3.75%. — Most policymakers agreed the economy continues to grow at a solid pace, though job gains are slowing and inflation remains above target. — Two committee members supported a small rate cut, but the majority preferred to wait. - Fed Chair Powell: Clearly, a weakening labor market calls for cutting. A stronger labor market says that rates are in a good place. It isn't anyone's base case right now that the next move will be a rate hike. - The economy has once again surprised us with its strength. Consumer spending numbers overall are good, and it looks like growth overall is on a solid footing. - Upside risks to inflation and downside risks to employment have diminished, but hard to say they are fully in balance. We think our policy is in a good place. - Overall, it's a stronger forecast since the Fed's last meeting. Haven't made any decisions about future meetings, but the economy is growing at a solid pace, the unemployment rate is broadly stable and inflation remains somewhat elevated, so we will be looking to our goal variables and letting the data light the way for us. - Most of the overrun in goods prices is from tariffs. We think tariffs are likely to move through, and be a one-time price increase. - Dissent: Miran and Waller (Miran is a admin shill and Waller wanted job as Fed Chair) GDP & Federal Budget — Economic growth remained strong in Q3 2025, with GDP rising at an annualized 4.4% driven by strong spending, higher exports, and reduced imports due to tariffs. — Investment was mixed, with business spending increasing while housing activity declined. — The federal deficit for December rose to $145 billion, though the fiscal year-to-date deficit is slightly smaller than last year. Inflation & Consumer Spending — Personal income and consumer spending rose moderately in October and November. — Inflation, measured by the PCE index, increased 0.2% in both months and roughly 2.7% year-over-year. — The Consumer Price Index rose 0.3% in December, with shelter, food, and energy all contributing. — Producer prices also increased, though 2025 producer inflation slowed compared to 2024. Housing — Existing home sales rose in December, but the number of homes for sale is still low. — Prices dipped a bit from November but remain higher than they were a year ago. — New-home sales in October were steady compared with the prior month but much higher than last year. — New-home prices fell compared to 2024, though they are still high relative to long-term norms. Manufacturing — Industrial production rose 0.4% in December and was up 2.0% for the year. — Manufacturing output increased, while mining activity declined and utility output jumped. — Durable goods orders grew sharply in November, driven by a big increase in transportation equipment, pointing to strong demand in key industries. Imports & Exports — Import and export prices rose slightly through November 2025. — The goods trade deficit widened in November because exports fell while imports increased. — For the year so far, both exports and imports are running above 2024 levels, though the overall trade deficit remains larger. Consumer Confidence — Consumer confidence fell sharply in January after improving in December. — Both views of current conditions and expectations for the future weakened, with expectations dropping well below the level that often signals recession risk. Earnings — Roughly one-third of S&P 500 companies have reported Q4 earnings, and overall results are strong. — 75% of companies have beaten EPS estimates, though this is slightly below long-term averages. Revenue beats remain solid at 65%. — Companies are reporting earnings 9.1% above estimates, which is well above the 5-and 10-year surprise averages. — The S&P 500 is on track for 11.9% year-over-year earnings growth, marking the 5th straight quarter of double-digit earnings growth. — Eight of eleven sectors are showing positive year-over-year earnings growth, led by Information Technology, Industrials, and Communication Services. — The Health Care sector shows the largest earnings declines among lagging categories. — The forward 12-month P/E ratio sits at ~22.2, elevated relative to 5-and 10-year averages, signaling continued optimism despite tariff and cost concerns. — FactSet also notes the S&P 500 is reporting a record-high net profit margin of 13.2%, the highest since 2009. We've been covering what's happening in Minnesota, and the killing of Alex Pretti, all week on The Verge. To begin this episode, Nilay explains why — and why so many others seem to feel the same way right now. After that, the hosts talk about the CEO-studded screening of Melania Trump's documentary last weekend, the disastrous public appearance from Tim Cook, and whether Cook and other CEOs have any other option but to capitulate to the Trump administration. Then it's time for some gadgets: we talk about the super-foldy, super-expensive Samsung Galaxy Z Trifold, the Clawdbot / Moltbot phenomenon, and whether Google can finally put Chrome OS and Android together the right way. Finally, in the lightning round, it's time for Brendan Carr is a dummy, Tesla's anti-car pivot, Apple's design hires, and more. Carl Quintanilla, Jim Cramer and David Faber engaged in a wide-raging discussion about better-than-expected quarterly results from "Magnificent 7" tech giants Meta Platforms, Tesla and Microsoft. Microsoft shares tumbled on slowing cloud growth and a boost in AI spending. Honeywell CEO Vimal Kapur joined the program to discuss earnings, AI and the company's spin-off strategy. Tesla's new six-seat Model Y L is already making waves in China. With deliveries underway and early demand spiking, this stretched, three-row SUV offers a roomier, more practical option without the Model X price tag. In this episode, we break down how Tesla reengineered the Model Y for the Chinese market, what makes the Model Y L different from earlier attempts at third-row seating, and why Gigafactory Shanghai is central to the rollout. We also look at what this move signals about Tesla's strategy in China and whether the Model Y L could end up in other markets.
Tesla Europe officially revealed the new Model Y Performance, and it's packing a few surprises that make it even better than anticipated. Plus: Tesla has been making news all around the world this week, from FSD Supervised rolling out in its first new region to Cybertruck launching in a new territory to the possible return of the Model S and Model X to Europe, and much more! The Nikola Motors saga continues with High Road Energy scooping up the company's remaining hydrogen trucks at a steep discount. Tesla news includes the arrival of CyberCab production equipment at Giga Texas, the debut of the Model YL in China (and its uncertain U.S. future), and a $10,000 price bump for the Model S and X, bundled with the Luxe Package. Shoot us a Text.Episode #1107: Today we dive into why used EVs — especially Teslas — are losing value fast, how a Cybertruck hung 6,600 pounds on a patch of glue, and what AI search's rise in impressions but drop in clicks means for auto dealers looking to stay visible.Show Notes with links:Electric vehicles are losing traction in the used market, according to iSeeCars. The latest study shows Tesla models topping the list of biggest price drops as demand cools and federal incentives near expiration.5 of the top 10 used vehicles with the largest price drops in June were EVs.Tesla Model S fell $8,768 (-15.8%), Model X dropped $9,544 (-15.5%), and Model Y slid $4,637 (-13.6%).Used EV prices fell 4.8% year-over-year, while used gas cars rose 5.2%.EV market share growth slowed to just 14.2%, down from 98% last year, even as supply increased.“For shoppers, used EVs offer about $1,200 less in value than a gasoline vehicle – and while you can love or hate how the market prices a vehicle, you can't argue with it,” said iSeeCars analyst Karl Brauer. The Tesla Cybertruck is back in headlines—this time literally hanging suspended by glue in a viral stunt. YouTuber JerryRigEverything put on a dramatic demo shining a light on Tesla's unusual but surprisingly strong repair method.A 6,600-pound Cybertruck was lifted mid-air using just a 2.5-inch patch of Fusor 2098 adhesive attaching it to a crane. That exact glue had been used in repairing the same truck when its tow hitch ripped out during a stress test.Fusor 2098 cures to about 3,190 psi tensile strength, and is OEM‑approved by Tesla and other manufacturers.Adhesive bonding, when paired with rivets, can distribute loads better and outperform welds in some impact scenarios.AI search is changing the game — not just how people ask questions, but how they see your brand. A new VaynerMedia study reveals that while impressions are climbing, actual clicks are falling off fast.AI search already makes up 7.6% of monetizable queries, expected to hit 25% by 2027.ChatGPT queries surged +180% in the past year, while Google's traditional traffic is slipping.“Zero‑click searches” are up, with site traffic down 6.7% year‑over‑year despite higher impression counts. Some takeaways:Move Fast and Test New AI Ad Formats Now: Early adopters of AI‑friendly strategies will capture outsized market share and will learn what works bestStrengthen Your Brand: A trusted, recognizable brand is more likely to be cited in AI answers, even if the click never happens.Optimize for AI discovery by creating content that's easy for LLMs to scan and quote — FAQs, concise answers, and video content.0:00 Intro with Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier3:46 Used EV Prices Down 4.8% YoY7:24 Tesla Cybertruck Hung From Glue10:07 AI Search ExpeJoin Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/

Shoot us a Text.Episode #1073: Six EVs crack the top 10 of Cars.com's American-Made Index, Tesla pauses Cybertruck and Model Y production, and the U.S. Senate gives crypto a win with new stablecoin regulations, clearing the path for mainstream adoption.Electric vehicles are leading the charge in U.S. manufacturing impact, as revealed by Cars.com's 2025 American-Made Index. For the first time, EVs make up the majority of the top 10, signaling how deeply electrification is taking root on American soil—even as OEMs recalibrate their long-term EV strategies. The top 10 Tesla Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X, Jeep Gladiator, Kia EV6, Honda Ridgeline, Honda Odyssey, Honda Passport, VW ID.4.The index ranks vehicles based on five key factors: percentage of U.S. and Canadian parts, final assembly location, country of origin for engines and transmissions, and the size of the automaker's U.S. manufacturing workforceLead researcher Patrick Masterson said, “Buying American-made often means looking beyond traditional nameplates. You don't always know what's built in your backyard unless someone connects the dots.”Tesla is halting its Cybertruck and Model Y production lines at the Austin Gigafactory during the July 4 week, timing the pause with its much-anticipated robotaxi debut in the same city. The one-week shutdown, starting June 30, will allow for line maintenance and voluntary worker training. This marks at least the third production pause in a year for Austin, following previous stoppages in May and December.Tesla says the pause will help ramp up output, though it hasn't specified which lines will see gains. In parallel, Tesla is preparing to launch its first robotaxi rides using Model Ys, with Elon Musk saying “We are being super paranoid about safety, so the [June 22 launch] date could shift,”Musk added that by June 28, the vehicles would be capable of driving themselves from the factory directly to a customer's home. The U.S. Senate has approved a bill creating the first federal regulatory framework for stablecoins, cryptocurrencies designed to maintain a fixed value—typically 1:1 to the U.S. dollar. This marks a significant step forward for digital asset adoption and oversight. The GENIUS Act passed with bipartisan support, 68–30, and now moves to the House for final approval before it can be signed into law.The bill would require stablecoins to be fully backed by liquid assets like U.S. dollars and short-term Treasuries, with monthly public reserve disclosures.Join Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/

Shoot us a Text.Episode #1015: Today we're diving into how global tensions are reshaping Tesla's China strategy, why car buyers rushed showrooms ahead of auto tariffs, and why Harvard says better mentoring might be the secret to fixing retail's revolving door of turnover.Show Notes with links:Tesla has stopped taking orders for its U.S.-made Model S sedans and Model X crossovers in China as trade tensions between the U.S. and China flare up once again.China will increase tariffs on U.S. goods to 125% on April 12, including autos.Tesla's Model S and X are built in Fremont, California, making them directly affected. The option to order these models disappeared from Tesla's China site in early April.Tesla's Shanghai factory, which makes the Model 3 and Y, isn't affected by the new tariffs.Model S and X made up fewer than 2,000 of Tesla's 661,000+ Chinese sales last year.A spike in new car sales last month wasn't just spring fever. According to Cloud Theory, auto shoppers raced to dealerships in March to beat looming tariffs.March saw 1.31 million new vehicles sold — a 38% jump from February.Cloud Theory attributes 153,000 of those sales to fear of impending price hikes from tariffs.Average marketed prices rose $1,123 from late February through March with SUVs, full-size pickups, and heavy duty trucks seeing the most increase — thanks to V8 engines sourced from Canada.Discounts and incentives dropped by $432 in March as OEMs braced for higher costs.“While this led to very strong results in the short term… the longer-term effects will likely be highly detrimental,” said Cloud Theory's Rick Wainschel.A new Harvard study says the key to lowering retail's notoriously high turnover may be simpler than we think: invest in frontline workers' career growth and mentorship.Researchers found that most low-wage workers actually want to keep their jobs to avoid disruption in their lives — especially once they're comfortable with their coworkers.Over 60% said they'd stay with their employer if they saw a real path to advance, but with many supervisors overseeing up to 20 employees, personalized feedback and coaching are rare.Employees often fear asking for promotions or raises, worried it might cost them their jobs.A related McKinsey study also showed career development was the top reason non-managers wanted to leave. Their advice? Empower managers — because their impact cascades throughout the whole organization.Join hosts Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/

While tax refunds are playing a role, tightening inventory—especially for budget-friendly cars—is making affordability an ongoing challenge.Used-vehicle supply dropped to 2.18 million units in early March, down from 2.23 million in February.Cars priced under $15,000 have only a 30-day supply—well below the 42-day industry average. The average listing price for a used car in March was $25,006, slightly down from last year.Ford, Chevrolet, Toyota, Honda, and Nissan account for over half of used-car sales, with the top 5 best-selling models listing at an average price of $23,531.February CPO sales hit 203,663 units, up from January but still 3.4% lower year-over-year.Used Tesla prices are dropping at three times the rate of the overall used car market, raising concerns about demand for both new and used models. While the market as a whole is cooling, Tesla's brand challenges seem to be accelerating depreciation.Tesla's used car prices dropped 3.7% in the last three months, compared to just 1.12% for the broader market and over the past year, Tesla's used prices fell 7.26%, nearly triple the market average of 2.68%.Over the last 90 days, the Model 3 is down 4.2%, the Model Y is down 2.9% and Cybertruck is down 11.5% and a staggering 58% YoYOnly the Model X saw an increase, up 1.29% in the past 30 days. After 9 months longer than expected, NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams are finally on their way home from the International Space Station. SpaceX launched Crew-10 on Friday, docked on Sunday, and undocked and began its journey home early this morning.Originally set for an 8-day mission, their Boeing Starliner test flight faced thruster failures and delays, forcing them to stay aboard the ISS until a new crew could arrive. After technical issues, scheduling setbacks, and political drama, Wilmore and Williams are set to return to Earth tomorrow evening.Despite the delays, the astronauts enjoyed their extra stay in space with Williams reflecting “This is my happy place. I love being up here in space. It's just fun, you know?”Wilmore echoed those comments: “It's been fun. It's been trying at times, no doubt. But stranded? No. Stuck? No. Abandoned? No.”Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email
