Tu begins the podcast talking about how the price war still has legs and will likely last through the end of this year into 2025. BYD has been leading the way with price cuts on their more popular vehicles daring their competitors to do the same. Tu then talks about the Buick Electra E5 EV that has just gone on sale for ~$23K and wonders out loud why they can't sell that in the US for a similar price. The discussion shifts to the technology companies that have entered the EV competition, in particular Huawei, Xiaomi and Baidu via Jiyue. With Jiyue's sales struggles, they openly wonder what is too much technology and whether Xiaomi can come up with the 'just right' approach to stuffing their EV with tech features. They then point out how many legacy automakers have announced dialing back its EV ambitions and the challenges they still have to overcome. They focus on the German automakers and reveal that one of their next MAX guests is Daniel Kirchert, former BMW executive who also co-founded BYTON.The podcast ends with Tu hoping that there's another price cut for the Model Y in the US since it may put him over the top for buying it himself.

Want to understand cars better? This is the show. David Twohig is an automotive engineer, journalist, and author. He was an engineering lead for the Nissan Qashqai, Alpine A110, Renault Zoe, and BYTON. On this episode he explains why cars are so hard to build; why focusing on weight isn't the priority of most OEMs; how expensive it is to change a button; the rising popularity of '90s Japanese cars in Europe; and so much more. His book, "Inside the Machine: An Engineer's Tale of the Modern Automotive Industry" is a great insight into how difficult it is to build a car. The book gives some insight into why car companies do what they do and make the decisions they make. If you've ever asked "Why did they do that?" this book might give you some understanding.https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/59522165https://www.the-intercooler.com/library/writers/david-twohig/ https://www.cargroup.org/person/david-twohig/ Recorded May 26, 2023 Head to factormeals.com/tire50 and use code tire50 to get 50% off your first box Get 20% OFF with our code TIRE at calderalab.com/TIRE to unlock your youthful glow and be ready for summer with Caldera + Lab! #teamcaldera #ad Go to birddogs.com/tire and enter promo code TIRE for a free Yeti style tumbler with your order.

The LA Auto Show advanced to the second and final media day Thursday and The Weekly Driver Podcast was back in the vehicle showcase halls at the Los Angeles Convention Center. It was a day for a visit back to the future — maybe. Co-hosts Bruce Aldrich and James Raia visited with representatives from a variety of concept vehicles, some from established manufacturers, others from new carmakers. VinFast of Vietnam debuted two electric SUV at the LA Auto Show. All images © James Raia/2021. As in previous years, concept cars showcased at the LA Auto Show are tentative at best. None of the concept vehicles we viewed and discussed are predicted to be publicly available until at least the fall of 2022. Some of the vehicles are not expected until as late as 2025. Other EVs, like the Byton, a concept that debuted with Rivian in 2018 and filed for bankruptcy earlier this year, will never be manufactured. LA Auto Show: Concepts Galore VinFast, the first "mainstream" manufacturer from Vietnam with plans to distribute two sport utility vehicles in the United States, had the largest presence of the pending electric vehicle manufacturers at the LA Auto Show. From its unveiling on the opening day of the show to its evening reception and further show presence, VinFast made a committed presence. According to its marketing, VinFast in Vietnamese stands for Style, Safety, Creativity, Pioneer. It touts its vehicles as the "product of our inspiration to launch a distinctive, world-class automotive brand with Vietnam and demonstrates the ability of the Vietnamese people to skillfully implement cutting-edge technology." The Canoo concept family vehicle debuted at the LA Auto Show. Like other pending vehicles, VinFast has neither definitive production plans or pricing for its SUV crossovers, the e35 and e36. Both are designed by Italy's famed Pininfarina. LA Auto Show: Can You Canoo? Two names new to the EV marketplace are Canoo and Mullen. The former is promoted as an autonomous "Lifestyle Vehicle." Its marketing material reads in part: "Fully electric, highly versatile and offering more utility, inside and outside for city explorers, businesses, families and adventurers." The Canoo, also touted as a "Loft on Wheels," is scheduled for late 2022. It's named the Canoo, according to a company spokesman, because it resembles an upside-down canoe. Its front end and rear look interchangeable. Canoo, based in Los Angeles, says "there is no need for electric vehicles to look like traditional cars, yet today they still do. Canoo plans to change that." It did. Canoo said its first vehicle will have "the exterior footprint of a compact car, with the interior space of a large SUV." LA Auto Show: Come Back in 2024 Mullen, based in Brea, California, is promoted as the first "Pure Electric SUV Crossover." The Five has an estimated range of 325 miles, it's electronically limited to 155 miles per hour and with an estimated 0-6 mph of 3.2 seconds. It's not predicted to be manufactured until 2024 will be sold in kiosks called "Lounge Points." We also discuss the Hyundai Seven concept, arguably the most unique concept at the show. While the Canoo may be promoted as a loft, the Seven is better defined as a futuristic lounge. It has sterilization lights, newfangled ambient lighting and enough fancy interior to be best-suited for an interior design magazine layout. Lastly, we chat about the Edison Future and its two luxury concepts, both combinations of utilitarian, off-road, futuristic SUVs, plushly attired and replete with technology overload and 35-inch wheels. After one delay and one cancellation, the LA Auto Show is back for the first time in two years. Like many businesses, the automotive industry has suffered. But its first major auto show since the Covid-19 pandemic began will be held Nov. 19-28 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. The 2021 LA Auto Show will emphasize auto mobility but will feature its traditional large selection of vehicle debuts. David Fortin, Head of Consumer Marketing for the event, is our guest on Episode #205 of The Weekly Driver Podcast. Co-hosts Bruce Aldrich and James Raia discuss with Fortin the pending show and the expected highlights. LA Auto Show: It's Back Founded in 1907, the LA Auto Show has built its reputation as one of the world's most prestigious auto shows. It hasn't been held since November 2019. As it did two years ago with further emphasis, the LA Auto Show will focus on the continued electrification of the automotive industry. The LA Auto Show always has its share of prototypes one-offs, including designer Jeremy Scott's Smart Car Concept. From startups to established brands, the 10-day show with packed days of test drives, never-before-seen vehicles, custom and exotic cars, all-new zero-emission vehicles, interactive activations and one-of-a-kind experiences. LA Auto: Plenty of Test Drives Influencers and shoppers can test-drive vehicles from brands such as Audi, Chrysler, Dodge, ElectraMeccanica, Fiat, Ford, Honda, Jeep, Nissan, Ram, Subaru and Toyota. Featured this year is the inaugural ZEVAS award program. It's the first people's choice award program of its kind that celebrates the top zero-emission vehicles available for sale or pre-order." The Byton all-electric sedan concept debuted at the 2018 LA Auto Show. "The ZEAVAS is probably one of the things we are there most proud of," said Fortin. "It was born within our company. Our owner and CEO, Lisa Kaz, really has always been connected to where vehicles are and where they are going. LA Auto Show: Future Is Now "As the EV mandate started to come into play even as a whisper and now as a true mandate she recognized that the LA Auto Show has always had a place in history, almost an obligation, to inform, educate and inspire people to ask 'what does mobility look like in the future?" Among the several additional attractions: • Camp Jeep (Outdoor): The long-standing manufacturer will present in a 25,000-square-foot indoor exhibit test course the opportunity for attendees to experience the off-road capabilities of Jeep vehicles. Product specialists, sometimes called Ambassadors, are an integral part of the LA Auto Show presentation of new vehicles. • EV Track Powered by Electrify America (Indoor): The largest open ultra-fast DC charging network—is the show's exclusive sponsor of the all-new indoor electric vehicle (EV) test track and charging provider for the automotive brands and vehicles featured in this year's outdoor test drives. Please join us as Fortin provides details about the much-anticipated return of the LA Auto Show. The event will be operated in full accordance with all safety protocols required by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. Vaccination cards or a negative COVID test within 72-hours of arriving onsite at the LA Convention Center along with masks will be required for entrance to the show. Free onsite rapid testing will be available to those who wish to test onsite. In this episode, Lei and Tu talk autonomous vehicles. They discuss Pony.ai, Didi, and break down the current partnership landscape between the AV startups, manufacturers, and ride-hailing companies and talk through how these partnerships are going to work. Lei highlights how the local chip startups could compete and ultimately dominate the local China market. Finally, Tu takes a few minutes to discuss the potential challenges ahead for Foxconn as they get into the automotive manufacturing business as they partner with Byton, Fisker, Faraday Future, and others.
Jack Cheng, co-founder at NIO and now CEO of MIH Alliance Foxconn, reveals how Foxconn will re-write the rules for EV manufacturing. In early 2021, Foxconn sent a tremor through automotive boardrooms across the world when it announced plans to enter the electric vehicle industry. Since then, MIH Alliance Foxconn has established new partnerships with several high profile companies including, Stellantis, Microsoft, Nvidia, Bosch, BYTON, Geely and Fisker. The vision is to create an open-source platform for EVs that will dramatically reduce costs and speed up time to market. The open-source approach also makes it possible for companies with no prior automotive experience to enter the arena. On June 1st, Foxconn announced a new partnership with PTT (Thailand) to build electric vehicles in Southeast Asia. Jack will also talk about his expansive guitar collection and how he came to love American Rock & Roll.#WinningInAsia / #ZozoGo https://twitter.com/Dunne_ZoZoGohttps://www.instagram.com/zo.zo.go/?hl=enhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-dunne-a696901a/

It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. HYUNDAI IONIQ 5 BREAKS COVER IN OFFICIAL SHOTS When we saw the retro inspired and very beautiful Hyundai Concept 45 there was little chance it would enter production. I mean, shag pile carpets and sliding barn door? But the reality, what's now called the Ioniq 5, isn't far off. The interior might not be the living room concept which resembles a plush lounge, but at least the exterior styling has kept much of the standout features of the concept car. "The new car, described by the brand as a “fundamental shift in BEV design approach”, will be fully revealed next month. It is the first production model to sit atop Hyundai and Kia’s new modular electric platform (E-GMP)." says Autocar: "New design elements include ‘Parametric Pixels’ (tiny pixel-style lighting elements that adorn the front of the car), a clamshell bonnet and 20in aero-optimised wheels. Technology found in the Ioniq 5 will include a Vehicle to Load (V2L) system offering a 3.5kW, 110/220v power supply via bidirectional charging - enough, Hyundai claims, to roast a turkey in a large oven. Ultra-fast charging promises to replenish up to 62 miles of range in as little as five minutes, too." Or 80% in 18minutes. The range is said to be just over 300 miles on WLTP. So although Hyundai won't talk battery sizes, say the efficiency was on average 4MpkWH (i could well be more), then 300 miles would need a 75kWh battery. And doing the math of the 80% charge in 18 minutes which they've told us, that would be able to get 60kWh of juice in that time. That would be 200kWh charging during that time. Which is incredibly fast, given the ramp down in speed you would expect after the battery is over half full, let alone 80%. But what about the claim of 62 miles (100km) in 5 mins? That would be a peak rate of 744 miles per hour. Or a peak rate of 248kW. it's an 800 volt architecture like the Taycan, which peaks at 270kW. Next up, a low slung sports sedan called the 6, and an SUV scheduled for 2024. E-GMP also accommodates a wide range of vehicle types, driving distances, and lifestyles through a standardized battery system equipped with technology optimized for EVs. E-GMP embraces unique EV design characteristics such as short overhangs and a long wheelbase collision safety, maximized passenger space, and battery safety. The space-consuming AC system has been moved from inside the car to the extra space created by replacing the engine with an electric motor leaving more room for passengers in the front. The 3 pin plug sockets will be up front, and under the back seat in the middle. Opposite where the rear USB ports would be on many cars, the rear of the armrest area. So you can get to the power from outside and inside. We anticipate the launch in February for a late 2021 on sale date. https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/hyundai-previews-new-ioniq-5-ev-ahead-february-unveiling CADILLAC CELESTIQ EV WILL OFFER 4-WHEEL STEERING "When it comes to the Cadillac Celestiq flagship EV, four seems to be the magic number. For the 2021 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Cadillac confirmed some details of the upcoming electric sedan, including all-wheel drive, four-wheel steering, and a four-quadrant glass roof." says Green Car Reports "The roof is made from suspended-particle-device smart glass, allowing each of the four occupants (the Celestiq won't have a middle rear seat) to set the level of transparency for their quadrant, a Cadillac press release said. Cadillac also said the Celestiq will have a "pillar-to-pillar freeform display" for the driver and front passenger, with individual screens for both passengers. Additional screen between the seats in the first and second rows "will separate individualized comfort settings from entertainment displays," the automaker said, implying that these screens will be used for controlling different features. The Celestiq is one of numerous electric cars based on General Motors' Ultium modular battery architecture and BEV3 platform. It's expected to have a fastback shape, and will be hand-assembled in Detroit. The same basic platform will be used for the Cadillac Lyriq electric SUV, which is expected to arrive before the Celestiq, in 2022" The full width display is taking on the Mercedes-Benz MBUX Hyperscreen system. And the Ultium battery packs will be made up to 200kWh for some models so the range should be impressive. https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1130910_flagship-cadillac-celestiq-ev-will-offer-4-wheel-steering-4-quadrant-smart-glass-roof KIA ELECTRIC CROSSOVER SPIED STILL WEARING THICK CAMOUFLAGE Kia is working on it's own full electric car from the ground up, and it has been seen again in lots of camo. "Kia is keeping the car under super-tight warps – it continues to wear thick cladding and camouflage. It only recently lost the swirly wrap underneath, though the bare metal isn't much to look at. The coverings cover the front and rear fascias, the rear hatch, and the doors, leaving a lot to one's imagination. The hatch design is further distorted with extra cladding." says Motor1.com: "The new EV will ride on Hyundai's Electric-Global Modular Platform . Horsepower and performance specs remain elusive, though expect it to be geared toward efficiency and not outright oomph." https://www.motor1.com/news/465783/new-kia-electric-crossover-spied/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all-news FOXCONN TEAMS UP WITH CHINESE AUTOMAKER GEELY "Foxconn and Chinese carmaker Geely have created a joint venture aimed at selling manufacturing and services to the global auto industry. The deal which was announced on Wednesday, marks Foxconn's continued expansion into the auto sector and reflects Geely's desire to partner with technology companies. Foxconn and Geely will provide car production, consulting, intelligent driving systems and other services to global automotive enterprises, the two companies said." writes CNBC: "Taiwanese firm Foxconn is best known as the company that assembles Apple's iPhones. Last year, it launched a platform to help automobile companies make electric cars. And this month, Foxconn signed a deal with Chinese electric carmaker Byton to help produce its first vehicle." https://www.cnbc.com/2021/01/13/foxconn-teams-up-with-chinas-geely-to-build-cars-for-other-automakers.html HITACHI CAPITAL INVESTS ANOTHER £10M IN GRIDSERVE "Hitachi Capital announced a £10m investment in Gridserve’s parent company, Gridserve Sustainable Energy Ltd. The firms say this is to strengthen their partnership following the successful launch of the UK’s first ultra-fast Electric Forecourt." accoring to electrive; "It is also not the first investment of Hitachi’s funding arm. The company has funded over £24m in Gridserve projects throughout 2020, including funding to help deliver the completion of the Braintree Electric Forecourt. The site is the first of over 100 large charging parks that Gridserve wants to install over the next five years. Robert Gordon, CEO of Hitachi Capital (UK) PLC, added they wanted “to become a market leader for EV adoption”. Hitachi Capital now holds 19.63% of shares in Gridserve’s parent company". https://www.electrive.com/2021/01/12/hitachi-capital-invests-another-10m-in-gridserve/ HONDA'S EV RACING BUILDS TO BREAK COVER AT TOKYO AUTO SALON 2021 "Honda is building two hot EVs, new entries for its motorsport roster. They are making a drag racer out of a Honda E and a hillclimb competitor from an N-One. Big Red is teasing its reveal on yet another microsite in advance of the virtual Tokyo Auto Salon 2021." says Jalopnik: "a performance version of the Model E is what enthusiasts have been clamoring for. WHAT EVS CAN WE EXPECT FROM STELLANTIS "By overwhelming margins, shareholders of both Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and Peugeot parent Group PSA Monday morning approved a $58 billion merger creating the world's fourth-largest automaker, Stellantis." says NBC News: "Officials have suggested the merger will yield billions of dollars in annual savings while helping Stellantis accelerate development of the electric and autonomous vehicles expected to transform the auto industry over the coming decade. The new automaker will be under pressure to ramp up spending on both autonomous and electrified vehicles over the coming years. On the battery-car side, Stellantis will have to catch up with key competitors taking the lead in the race to bring electric vehicles to market." https://www.nbcnews.com/business/autos/peugeot-shareholders-vote-merge-fiat-chrysler-creating-world-s-fourth-n1252712 NISSAN TO BUILD ITS NEW EV IN JAPAN AND NOT THE UK "The Japanese paper Nikkei reported that the new Nissan Ariya will be built in Japan rather than at Nissan’s UK factory in Sunderland. According to the paper, Nissan considered Sunderland but Brexit worries led the manufacturer to decide in favour of exporting the Ariya from Japan." says Next Green Car: " The UK plant that makes the Leaf and Qashqai has, at times, built more than 500,000 units a year, though that dropped to 350,000 in 2019. About 80% of those models are exported. The Ariya is the first EV from Nissan since the Leaf debuted a decade ago. The model will be sold in phases next year in Japan, Western markets, and China. Ariyas bound for Europe and the US will be made at Nissan's assembly plant in Japan's Tochigi Prefecture, north of Tokyo. https://www.nextgreencar.com/news/9055/nissan-to-build-its-new-ev-in-japan-and-not-the-uk/ NIO TEASES ITS FLAGSHIP SEDAN "NIO announced that during its annual NIO Day event, on January 09, 2021, it will unveil an all-new flagship sedan - actually the first sedan in NIO's lineup." reports InsideEVs: "If it will be similar to the good-looking NIO ET Preview concept from 2019 and we are extremely eager to see it. The Chinese manufacturer said that the car will be equipped with the latest autonomous driving technologies and a 150 kWh battery pack! This is basically the biggest battery in a passenger car ever (assuming series production models). We guess that range should exceed 600-800 km (370-500 miles), assuming energy consumption of: respectively 250wh & 200wh / km" https://insideevs.com/news/464111/nio-teases-flagship-sedan-150-kwh-battery/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all-articles FOXCONN SEALS MANUFACTURING DEAL WITH CHINESE EV STARTUP BYTON "Apple Inc. supplier Foxconn Technology Group signed a strategic cooperation deal with embattled Chinese electric-vehicle startup Byton Ltd. in a transaction that could mark a large bet by the iPhone assembler on the car-making business." reports Bloomberg: "Foxconn will supply Byton with its advanced manufacturing technology, operation management expertise and supply chain resources. . The companies aim to start mass production of the Byton M-Byte by the first quarter of 2022, according to a statement Monday. Foxconn is the single most important production partner for Apple, which is reportedly considering developing a self-driving car of its own. Foxconn is also seeking to diversify a business that depends on the U.S. smartphone giant for half its revenue." https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-01-04/foxconn-in-talks-with-chinese-ev-startup-byton-for-funding WORKHORSE GOT A LARGE ELECTRIC-VEHICLE ORDER Workhorse secured an order from Pride Group Enterprises for 6,320 C-Series all-electric vans. Workhorse’s C-Series vehicles are commercial delivery vans." reports Barrons: "Pride Group appears to be a privately held logistics company operating in the U.S. and Canada, offering services such as truck rental and trucking services. The company wasn’t immediately available to comment on the size of its operations, but Pride lists 260 trucks in its logistics group. the news release says the order is “subject to various production and delivery conditions.” That could mean that delivery is predicated on Pride Group’s own demand for delivery vehicles, itself driven by demand from Pride’s customers." https://www.barrons.com/articles/workhorse-just-got-a-new-electric-vehicle-order-what-it-means-for-the-stock-51609788398 TESLA CARS TO BE APPROVED FOR SALE IN ISRAEL "Tesla cars are about to be approved for use in Israel. The Transportation Ministry is set to approve the entrance of the US electric carmaker within the next day or so, a ministry spokesman said Monday." according to The Jerusalem Post: "Tesla was originally slated to launch its commercial operations in Israel in January and was set to open a pop-up store in Tel Aviv’s Ramat Aviv Mall. However, the launch was delayed by regulatory hurdles. Details about the company’s operations in Israel will be revealed once the approval is finalized." https://www.jpost.com/israel-news/tesla-cars-to-be-approved-for-sale-in-israel-654215 FIRST LOOK AT TESLA MODEL Y’S HEPA FILTER "It appears that the Tesla Model Y’s HEPA filter is quite sizable, and it is also designed in such a way that replacing it would not be a complicated affair. This was hinted at in an image recently shared by a Tesla enthusiast from China, who was fortunate enough to take a photo of the all-electric crossover’s HEPA filter. " says Sion at Teslarati: " the Model Y’s HEPA filter is installed just behind the all-electric crossover’s frunk. This would likely make the vehicle easier to service compared to its larger sibling, the Model X, which requires some disassembly of the frunk area when its HEPA filter is replaced. Members of the Tesla community have observed that the Model Y’s HEPA filter is quite large and close to the size of the filter found in the Model X, a vehicle that is significantly larger. The size of the component itself also highlights Elon Musk’s previous statements about the Model 3 not having enough space for a hospital-grade HEPA filter such as those found in the Model S and Model X. The company hopes to change that by introducing the production version of its 2017 E-Motion concept" says Jalopnik: "MG has been working on an ambitious growth strategy recently, which aims to get the company up to a million unit sales in 2024. The new electric sports car doesn’t have a name yet, but it will be a two-door 2+2 layout sports coupe. There’s no getting around that the concept looks very Jaguar F-Type in shape, perhaps with a little bit of Aston DBS for flavor. Initial reports regarding the car seem to indicate that MG is looking to launch the sports car for an incredibly reasonable 30,000 British Pounds. At current exchange rates, that’s about $40,000." Autoblog points out the scale from MG will come from the cheap end of the market though: "Storming into the electric sports car segment might elevate MG's image, but it won't significantly increase the firm's annual sales. It's building its volume goals on an electric, city-friendly hatchback that will be positioned in the same segment as the Honda E and the Mini Cooper SE, according to a separate Autocar report. Also due out in 2021, the city car will be about as big as the 3, MG's current entry-level model, and it will be considerably cheaper than its main rivals. Value, not performance, is the born-again brand's biggest selling point in 2021" https://jalopnik.com/mg-plans-electric-sports-car-with-300-miles-of-range-fo-1845988501 https://www.autoblog.com/2021/01/04/mg-electric-sports-car-emotion/ DEALERS FACE CHOICE: INVEST FOR EVS OR GET BENCHED "The electric revolution disrupting an auto industry set in its ways for more than a century is pushing dealerships to make a choice: invest in the future or sit on the sidelines." says Detroit News: "GMC told dealers they didn't have to transition to stay open. But if they want to sell the Hummer EV coming late this year, they must agree to invest in charging stations, training and tools needed to work on and sell electric vehicles. To sell Ford Motor Co.'s Mustang Mach-E, dealers have to be EV-certified with expanded charging abilities, increased service capabilities and more personnel training. Ford has 3,000 dealers and 2,100 have signed up for the certification." https://eu.detroitnews.com/story/business/autos/2021/01/04/car-dealers-must-invest-in-selling-electric-vehicles/4025584001/ 25 CHANGES THAT TESLA MADE TO THE MODEL 3 WITH THE 2021 REFRESH @1:32 New Aero Wheels & Cover @2:50 Chrome Delete @3:15 Smaller Frunk @3:35 Hood Easier To Close @4:12 Double Pane Glass On Front Windows @5:23 New Trunk Gasket @5:53 Automatic Opening & Closing Trunk @7:27 New Headlights @8:02 Trunk Opens 3” Less Than Before @8:46 Center Console Redesign @9:13 Wireless Charging Pads @9:21 Accent Stitching On Console Trim @9:38 Armrest Tray No Longer Included @9:56 USB-C Ports Replace USB-A In Center Console @10:34 Formatted USB Drive Included & Mounted In Glove Box @11:27 USB-C Ports replace USB-A In Rear Seating area @11:35 Metal Scroll Wheel On Steering Wheel @11:59 Graphite Colored Paint Used On Power Seat Controls @12:12 Magnetic Sun Visor Clips @12:32 New Graphic On Door Release Buttons @13:12 Heated Steering Wheel @13:54 Heat Pump System @15:25 Improved Battery Cells / More Capacity @16:25 Increased Range @17:21 Improved Efficiency QUESTION OF THE WEEK EV tech is on a rip, but is the constant improvement around an EV a possible reason NOT to buy one?

Welcome to another episode of The Weekly Driver Podcast. In this week's two-part presentation, we recap the recently concluded LA Auto Show and we discuss drivers' habits during the holidays with Laura Adams of DriversEd.com. As the first major auto show of the year, the LA Auto Show is always chock-full of innovation. This year was no different. Two concept vehicles, Byton and Rivian, both soon scheduled for their public debuts, attracted a lot of attention. The Rivian concept is an all-electric SUV with 0-60 mph speed in 3.0 seconds and a 400-mile range. The new company also has an all-electric pickup. Image © James Raia/2018. Co-hosts Bruce Aldrich and James Raia discuss the Byton and its building reputation as a potential rival for Tesla. And we also exchange ideas on Rivian. It plans on debuting the first electric pick-up truck as well as an SUV with the next year. The Rivian models are being touted with 0-60 mph acceleration in 3.0 second and in higher-priced trims with respective ranges of 400 miles. In the second half go the episode, Bruce and James discuss with Adams the results of the online driving school's recent survey drivers' habits during the holiday season. A repeat guest, Adams is a statistical whirlwind. We discuss some of the surprising and not-so-surprising statistics covering a range of driving situations during the holidays — office parties to New's Years and Uber to marijuana use while driving. A few key numbers from the company's latest survey: 67 percent of Americans said they feel less safe on the road during the holiday season. And 23 percent of those who responded to the survey admit to drinking more alcohol during the holiday season than they do during other times of the year. “The unfortunate reality is that every year come holiday time, there's more drinking, and there's more drinking and driving—which leads to more accidents and more deaths,” said Adams, a safety and education analyst. “The solution is actually simple: if you're drinking, arrange for someone else to drive or call for an Uber, Lyft or taxi. Period. Any death caused by drinking and driving is a death that was entirely preventable.” The Weekly Driver encourages and appreciates feedback from our listeners. Welcome to our special podcast episodes from AutoMobility LA and the Los Angeles Auto Show. For the past few years, AutoMobility LA has showcased the ever-advancing technology in the automotive world. Our first episode is direct from the technology tent on the eve of the opening day of the traditional show. The Byton concept SUV has a 49-inch touchscreen interface. Image © James Raia/2018 Co-host Bruce Aldrich is producing the show remotely, but James Raia (that's me) will be reporting live from the showroom floor for three days. We'll start with two diverse guests, Florian Bauer from the concept electric vehicle Byton and Jeremy Levi, a sales consultant for Airstream. Bauer is director of product management for Byton. It's considered a pending top competitor for Tesla and it's about year from its debut in China, where its financial backing is located. If Byton's future advances as planned, the M-Byte crossover and E-Byte sedan will debut to the American public via its U.S. base in Santa Clara, California in June 2020. Bauer and I discuss the unique Byton features. With an advertised base price of $45,000, the Byton is marketed for drivers and passenger to operate the vehicle or controls some of its features with Amazon Alexa voice commands or hand gestures. The command operation is a touchscreen that extends the entire length of the dash. It's 49 inches long and 10 inches high. The seats in the spacious SUV swivel so passengers can face each other. Levi discusses the new fully connected Airstream Classic. With all-new Smart Control Technology, the Airstream Classic's most important features and amenities can be monitored and controlled from anywhere. Travelers can stay connected to the comforts of home, even when far from it. In addition to its availability on this website, the Weekly Driver Podcast is also available on iTunes. January has so far proven to be one of the busiest months for the transportation industry. CES in early January was flooded with car news, including the debut of a new $45,000 electric SUV by a Chinese Tesla competitor called Byton. Then, just days after CES wrapped, we had the Detroit auto show, where America's largest car-makers trot out their designs for the next year. WIRED transportation editor Alex Davies pays close attention to all of these announcements and developments.
