In this rare and powerful episode, I sit down with Randy Parker, CEO of Hyundai and Genesis Motor North America, one of the most progressive and people-first leaders in the automotive industry—and head of the third largest automaker in the world. We dive into the state of retail automotive, how Hyundai and Genesis are breaking records, and why Randy's leadership style has made him a dealer favorite (IMO) across the country. We talk tariffs, US production, economic development, and electrification strategies—including the IONIQ 9, new charging partnerships, and the company's flexibility in responding to real-time consumer demand. But what really makes this conversation powerful is our shared belief in relationships—that people are the true link to profitability. Randy opens up about his passion for mentorship, coaching NBA students, and why investing in people is the heartbeat of his leadership. We explore how Hyundai is: Building major U.S. infrastructure (Meta Plant in Georgia, steel mill in Louisiana) Balancing innovation in fuel cell, EV, hybrid, and air mobility Reinforcing the dealer model and expanding service capacity Making car buying easier with online tools like Amazon Auto Always playing offense—with a simple mantra: “Sell, sell, sell like hell!” This one's packed with leadership gold, forward-thinking strategy, and the kind of authenticity that defines real success. Don't miss this episode with a powerhouse CEO who's shaping the future of retail and proving why people still matter most. Dealer Talk with Jen Suzuki Podcast |

Shoot us a Text.Episode #1038: Today we're talking about the expected surge in auto dealership M&A activity, Hyundai's latest software update that simplifies EV charging across major networks, and Tanger's decision to launch its back-to-school campaign early in response to ongoing tariff concerns.Show Notes with links:Though Q1 saw a dip in dealership buy-sell activity, The Presidio Group sees the rest of 2025 heating up. With election season uncertainty in the rearview, dealers may be ready to get back to the negotiating table.Q1 had 82 transactions involving 106 dealerships, down from 90 deals and 175 stores last year.Election year uncertainty slowed activity, but momentum is now rebounding with Presidio saying the pipeline is “robust” and expecting strong summer/fall dealmaking.Presidio President George Karolis said that tariffs are adding complexity, especially around brand valuation and sourcing strategies. However, many dealers are already looking past tariffs, and there are more buyers than sellers in the current market.“Certainly, [tariffs have] come up. If anything, maybe we're buying a little bit of time just to see what happens over the next 90 days before we finalize some transactions,” said Sonic Automotive President Jeff Dyke.Hyundai EV drivers just got a serious charging upgrade. With tighter app integration and support for plug-and-charge at Tesla Superchargers, the Ioniq lineup is catching up to the Tesla standard in user experience.New software upgrades bring MyHyundai app support for Tesla, ChargePoint, EVGo, and Ionna.Plug-and-charge is now available on Ioniq 5, Ioniq 9, and future EVs—just plug in and go.App features include route planning, charger location, and direct in-app payments.Older Hyundai EVs can access Superchargers with an adapter; however the Kona EV is not yet supported. The upgrade aims to make EV charging “as easy as gassing up.”As tariffs loom large, outlet mall giant Tanger is speeding up its seasonal strategy. The company's early back-to-school campaign kicks off June 1, tapping into consumer concerns over rising prices and potential supply shortfalls.Tanger CEO Stephen Yalof says early shopping means better deals and availability. This year's campaign targets 10 million TangerClub members with urgent messaging and marks a pivot from last year's late-July start.Other retailers like Fashion Nova and Beis are also urging pre-tariff purchases.“If they can make decisions early and shop early, then they can take advantage of getting the products they want at the price they want,” said Yalof.Join Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/

The move is set to rattle the global auto supply chain and could result in major price hikes for consumers. The tariff increases from a 2.5% base to 25%, covering vehicles and some auto parts like engines and transmissions.Parts meeting the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) rules will get a temporary reprieve until the Commerce Department sets new regulations.Aaron Bragman of Cars.com said that 50% of all cars are imported from outside the US and encouraged potential buyers to act soon as prices could rise from $3K - $12K “If you need a new car, go get one as soon as you possibly can—lock in a price—because those prices might be going up very soon.”Manufacturers may shift production and pass higher costs to consumers and dealers, while retaliatory tariffs loom from other nations.UAW President Shawn Fain called it a victory for autoworkers, saying “Ending the race to the bottom in the auto industry starts with fixing our broken trade deals.”Hyundai has officially opened its state-of-the-art EV plant in Georgia, marking a historic $7.6 billion investment in U.S. manufacturing. The facility will produce Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis electric vehicles, including the much-anticipated IONIQ 9.Hyundai's project is Georgia's largest economic development investment ever, expected to create 8,500 direct jobs and over 58,000 total jobs. The 2025 IONIQ 5 was the first model built at the plant, with the three-row IONIQ 9 set to debut this spring.Hyundai recently announced a $21B investment in U.S. production, including $9B for EV expansion and $6B for a new steel plant in Louisiana.Hyundai Motor Group executive chair Euisun Chung said, “Together with the talented workforce at HMGMA, we are building the future of mobility with America, in America.”OpenAI is rolling out built-in image generation within ChatGPT, marking a big leap in AI-powered creativity. Dubbed “Images in ChatGPT”, this feature is available starting today across multiple user tiers.Users can now generate images directly within ChatGPT using GPT-4o's “omnimodal” technology.New enhancements improve “binding”, meaning the AI better understands object relationships and attributes—avoiding mix-ups like miscolored shapes.Unlike past models that produced garbled, misspelled words, GPT-4o can now render clean, legible text in images. The AI now accurately follows detailed text-based prompts, even replicating whiteboard notes and comic strip text.Research lead Gabriel Goh calls it a “step change above previous models”, with improved precision in rendering complex promptHosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

While new circumstances might spell difficulties for the makers of electric vehicles, Hyundai is charging ahead with new variants of its popular Ioniq 5. Accompanying a 2025 model-year refresh, the newest of the variants is the Ioniq 5 XRT, an off-road take on the platform. It includes standard all-wheel-drive, increased ride height, all-terrain tires and tow hooks. To describe it for us we have Mike Evanoff, a senior product planner and expert on the vehicle. Host Jack Nerad just caught up with him at a Hyundai-sponsored event in and around Palm Springs, California, and we have that interview for you. This week our road tests include thorough evaluations of the 2025 Polestar 3 battery-electric crossover and the 2025 Toyota Corolla FX. Guest Co-Host Matt DeLorenzo, author of How To Buy an Affordable Electric Car: A Tightwad's Guide to EV ownership, applied his special expertise to a review of the Polestar 3. Also in this episode, Host Jack Nerad describes his experiences during a week at the wheel of the new Corolla FX trim. In the news this week, Chevrolet has unveiled a startlingly new ultra-high performance prototype based loosely on a production EV. It might end up being a racecar in a series that would feature several similar EVs. We'll have the details. There's more tariff talk this week as the Trump Administration signals that it is looking at “reciprocal tariffs” on automobiles and other products. We can give some clarity on what has become an emotional issue. In light of changing regulations — and changing market conditions — Ford has decided to delay the launch of its next-generation F-150 pickup. And a troubled electric vehicle maker has entered into Chapter 11 bankruptcy. We'll tell you which one and what its future might hold coming up. He compares it to the Genesis GV series, favoring the Lexus for its subtle quality. Next, he reviews the Kia Sorento, noting its attractive interior and impressive features, although it falls short of the Lexus in material feel. Jon then examines the Kia Carnival minivan, praising its spacious design and handling. The Hyundai Ioniq 5N impresses him with its unique styling and sporty performance, albeit with a few quirks like a high trunk floor. Shoot us a Text.Happy Wednesday! Today, we're looking at President Trump's proposed 25% auto tariffs and the effects it could have. Plus, we're covering how Hyundai and Kia are ramping up US battery and EV production, making those models eligible for the $7500 tax credit. Then, we'll cover how Chinese customers are not happy with BYD. Show Notes with links:President Donald Trump has announced that 25% auto tariffs are coming soon—with more details expected April 2. The move aims to reshape global trade, but it could drive up vehicle prices and shake the industry. His cabinet is set to deliver reports on trade options by April 1, outlining tariffs on autos, pharmaceuticals, and semiconductors.Europe currently charges a 10% tariff on U.S. vehicle imports, while the U.S. only charges 2.5% on foreign cars—except for pickups, which already face a 25% duty.Trump also set a March 12 start date for 25% tariffs on imported steel and aluminum, which could raise costs for automakers. He has previously announced and delayed tariffs on Mexican and non-energy Canadian imports, keeping trade relationships tense. From a Steve Greenfield LinkedIn Post: “[These tariffs] puts a $240 billion trade route in the crosshairs, with some of the biggest brands in Germany and South Korea most exposed.”After months of uncertainty, Hyundai and Kia EVs are back on track to qualify for the full $7,500 federal tax credit. With a new U.S.-based battery supply chain, the automakers are positioning themselves for a big year in 2025 as they ramp up production of new models like the 2025 IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 9.Hyundai's Georgia EV plant will start mass-producing the 2025 IONIQ 5 next month.SK Battery America (SKBA) will supply batteries made in the U.S., meeting the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) requirements. The new Bartow County battery plant will produce enough batteries for 200,000 EVs annually and cut shipping times to the EV plant.Until full tax credit eligibility is restored, Hyundai is still passing the $7,500 credit through leasing, making the 2025 IONIQ 5 cheaper than a Toyota RAV4.Chinese automaker BYD is facing a wave of consumer complaints after offering free smart driving features across most of its lineup. Many existing customers feel cheated, believing they overpaid for their vehicles before the upgrades.Over 4,700 complaints were filed on 12365auto.com between Feb. 11-17, up from 150 the week before and 500 in January.BYD's Ocean and Dynasty series dominated the platform's top 10 most complained-about cars. Some buyers claim salespeople misled them, denying upcoming upgrades—only for a newer, better-equipped model to launch weeks later at the same price.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

The 2025 Volkswagen ID. Buzz is the most buzzworthy vehicle to hit American highways this decade. Combining the exterior style of the classic Microbus with the chassis of a thoroughly modern electric vehicle, the ID.Buzz is a crowd-pleaser that stops traffic, as Host Jack Nerad discovered during his two weeks with the vehicle. Its exterior design features LED lighting, retro-inspired wheels, and optional two-tone paint that pays homage to its iconic predecessor. But the drivetrain is anything but retro. The ID.Buzz is powered by a 91-kWh battery and offers two drivetrain configurations: rear-wheel-drive with 282 horsepower and an EPA-estimated range of 234 miles and 4Motion all-wheel-drive with 335 horsepower and a range of 231 miles. Charging is efficient, with DC fast charging replenishing 10-80% in just 26 minutes. Inside, the ID. Buzz boasts a spacious and customizable interior, offering up to 145.5 cubic feet of cargo space, flexible seating, and advanced technology, including a 12.9-inch infotainment display, IQ.Drive driver assistance, and wireless charging. It's a stark contrast to Nerad's 1968 Type 2 “Early Bay” Bus, powered by a 57-horsepower 1600cc engine that delivered a 0-60 mph time of 37 seconds and a top speed of 65 mph. But is the ID.Buzz as good a value as that long-gone college-era VW? Nerad will have the answer. In our other road test this week, Co-Host Chris Teague will have the answer on the all-new 2025 Ford Ranger. A finalist for North American Truck of the Year, the Ranger boasts a new engine that makes it much more competitive versus rivals that include the Chevrolet Colorado, Nissan Frontier, and the Toyota Tacoma. Teague is a Toyota fan, but does he see the Ranger as the better midsize truck? He'll give his verdict in this episode. Driving News Our look at Driving News this week features a headline-grabbing development that could reshape the industry. Nissan and Honda, two global giants with big U.S. footprints, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to explore a potential integration. If it goes forward, this partnership could see the companies combining their efforts in electrification, platform sharing, and advanced vehicle intelligence. With plans for a joint holding company by 2026, this is a story with far-reaching implications for drivers everywhere. In more amusing news, Hyundai has achieved an incredible and largely esoteric feat with its Ioniq 5 electric vehicle, earning a Guinness World Records title for the greatest altitude change ever by an electric car. Over 14 grueling days, the Ioniq 5 covered more than 4,900 kilometers across India, traveling from the Himalayas' highest drivable point to below sea level in Kerala. But what does this record prove? Jack and Chris will offer their opinions. Switching gears to luxury, Jack and Chris will also offer their opinions on the 2025 Genesis G80 3.5T Sport Prestige AWD, a sedan that blends advanced technology, stunning design, and exceptional performance. Powered by a twin-turbocharged V6, the G80 delivers a smooth, refined ride while packing a punch under the hood. Inside, it's all about premium touches, from Nappa leather seating to a cutting-edge OLED instrument cluster. Our two reporters will deliver their verdicts in this show This week's guest is Brian Jannusch, a Nissan GT-R expert with a passion for the legendary sports car. From its iconic engineering to his quest to drive one at the Nurburgring, Brian shares fascinating insights into what makes the GT-R so special. It's a conversation that will resonate with sports car fans and anyone who appreciates automotive excellence. The episode also tackles practical advice with safety tips for 2025 from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. As the year begins, it's a good time to revisit basics like seatbelt use, sober driving, and staying alert on the road. Simple steps can make a big difference in preventing accidents and keeping your loved ones safe.

Mazda has made its name creating cars that enthusiast drivers love, and we have two examples of that this week in our road test segment — the Mazda MX-5 Miata and the Mazda3. Of course, the Miata needs no introduction. For decades, it has been a go-to renowned for its sharp handling and perky, fun-to-drive demeanor. But is it the right choice for Maine on the edge of winter? Co-host Chris Teague will have his thoughts on that. Across the country in more pleasant climes, Host Jack Nerad got a weeklong stint in the Mazda3 2.5T Premium Plus AWD, the highest-end version of Mazda's highly praised compact sedan. He discovered that the Mazda3 continues to combine performance, luxury, and advanced technology in a surprisingly affordable package. Featuring a 2.5-liter SKYACTIV-G turbocharged engine, it delivers 250 horsepower and puts that power to good use via its all-wheel drive and G-Vectoring Control Plus. Its sleek exterior boasts 18-inch black alloy wheels and LED lighting, while inside, black leather-trimmed seats, heated front and rear seats, and a dual-zone climate control system provide a premium-brand experience. Then there's the infotainment system. The Mazda3 has a 10.25-inch display, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, navigation, and a 12-speaker Bose audio system, but does its idiosyncratic control scheme spoil what is otherwise a stellar potential purchase? Jack and Chris will give their thoughts. In the news this week, those seeking a battery-electric pickup will find Tesla's Cybertruck is making waves with its new lease pricing. We'll have details on if the deal is as good as it first seems. Jaguar continues on its controversial way, unveiling the jaw-dropping Type 00 concept. It blends futuristic design with electric luxury to deliver something both new and remarkably retro. Chris and Jack have their reactions to a vehicle that some describe as shocking. Also in the news, Hyundai has just introduced its first three-row electric SUV, the Ioniq 9, showcasing versatility, tech innovation, and sustainability. With Nerad in attendance, Volkswagen pulled the wraps off the newest iteration of its Tiguan compact SUV, Genesis unmasked its 2025 GV70 crossover, and Ford has announced its Ford Mustang GTD supercar will be the subject of a short film available this coming week. Our special guest this week is Steve Center, Kia America chief operating officer. Pollsters have been asking Americans about space for decades but the landscape -- spacescape? -- hasn't changed a lot. What began as a race to put a man in orbit between two superpowers has transformed into a race between private companies to make space travel cheap and easy. What do we think?Back here on Earth, you've probably noticed a lot more electric vehicles on the road over the last few years. But for every Tesla, Bolt, and Ioniq, Americans are still buying far more gas and hybrid cars. What's the real future of EVs? Marist College Associate Professor of Environmental Science, Dr. Ramesh Laungani (@DrRamBio), joins us to drive us through the developments. And, for our first December fun fact, we're regifting old polls for the season.

Shoot us a Text.Welcome to December as we talk about controversial Stellantis CEO, Carlos Tavares' abrupt ending. We also talk about a huge partnership between BYD and Apple, as well as Hyundai's venture into performance. Show Notes with links:Carlos Tavares has unexpectedly stepped down as Stellantis CEO following escalating tensions with the board over sales declines and stock performance. The leadership change highlights the automaker's ongoing struggles in key markets like North America.Tavares, known for his cost-cutting expertise, clashed with the board over strategic priorities for addressing sales slumps and rising inventories. The board named Chairman John Elkann to head an interim leadership committee while a new CEO is sought, expected by mid-2025.Stellantis shares have dropped 38% in the past year, with North American sales down 17% while models like the Ram 1500 and Jeep Wagoneer have an average of 112 days supply.Dealers and stakeholders criticized Tavares for his approach, with Detroit dealer Jeff Laethem remarking, “It couldn't get worse,” as inventory challenges grew.UAW President Shawn Fain added, “He's leaving behind a mess of painful layoffs and overpriced vehicles sitting on dealership lots.”BYD, Tesla's fiercest EV competitor, has become a crucial partner in Apple's supply chain, assembling over 30% of Apple's iPads and expanding its role in producing cutting-edge components like titanium frames for the iPhone Pro.BYD employs approximately 100,000 people and 10,000 engineers dedicated to Apple's supply chain, locally dubbed the "fruit chain," showcasing its significant integration into Apple's ecosystem.BYD has facilitated Apple's push to diversify beyond China by establishing production capabilities in Vietnam and India, setting the stage for a broader global supply network.Tim Cook, during his third visit to China this year, highlighted BYD as one of the suppliers “pushing the boundaries of what's possible,” cementing BYD's role as an innovation leader.BYD is venturing into AI-powered robots for factories in collaboration with Nvidia. Executive Wang Haoyu stated, “We're raising many fish in a pool... when a fish matures, we can scoop it out,” underscoring their exploratory and adaptive business model.Hyundai redefines EV fun with the 2025 Ioniq 5 N. By combining performance, quirky features, and a nostalgic twist, this SUV bridges the gap between electric efficiency and driving exhilaration.Powered by 641 HP and 545 lb-ft of torque, it nearly triples the horses and doubles the torque that the standard Ioniq 5 gets.Boasts drift modes, launch control, and specialized race-ready settings.Features “N e-shift” and “N Active Sound Plus” for fake but fun ICE sensations.Engineers balanced performance with durability for track and road use.“It's bringing that sense of connection to driving and engagement to EVs […] it's just back to what makes driving funHosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

Tom decided—contrary to a suggestion of his from last week's show—that Stellantis deserved to be considered among the carmakers producing the best-finished cabins. In the second segment, Jill and Tom welcome Hyundai Product Planning Manager Andre Ravinowich to the show. Andre walked the hosts through the brand's L.A. The 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N takes everything you'd expect from a battery-electric vehicle and throws it for a loop. Hyundai's performance-oriented BEV gives you battery-electric bonafides like 601 hp and 568 lb-ft of torque but throws the brand's N image into the mix. That translates to fake shift points, hilarious engine noise, and a package that is still useful despite the hilarity. This combination of performance and cartoonish enthusiasm makes the Ioniq 5 N one of the most exciting battery-powered vehicles on the road today. Eschewing battery power, but also stuck with high-strung downsizing, the Toyota GR Corolla takes the tried-and-true enthusiast car path and features gobs of power for not a lot of mass. This GR Corolla packs a turbocharged 1.6-liter three-cylinder engine under the hood that throws 300 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque through a six-speed manual transmission and into a standard all-wheel-drive system. Like the Ioniq 5 N, the Corolla shape and the potent powertrain have turned the GR Corolla into an instant enthusiast darling.   On this episode of Talking Car with the Boss, Natalie Neff and Wesley Wren discuss their respective times in these machines. The two talk about the Ioniq 5 N's effect on battery-electric cars, the hilarious simulated features, and what makes it so interesting for non-EV shoppers. They also talk about what makes the GR Corolla so special in today's marketplace. Closing the show, the pair both pick which machine they'd add to their collections.
