Welcome back to a second episode of a brand new season of The Contemplative Podcast. On today's instalment, Matt Emery chats with Clarice Jensen, an American (NYC-based) cellist, a graduate of the Julliard School, and an artistic director of ACME (the American Contemporary Music Ensemble). As an instrumentalist, collaborator, and in her role in ACME, Jensen has recorded and performed alongside many of my all-time favourite modern classical composers, including Jóhann Jóhannsson, Max Richter, Björk, Stars of the Lid, Nico Muhly, Philip Glass, and Steve Reich. As a solo composer, she has been celebrated on these pages for her albums on FatCat's 130701 imprint - see the writeup on the debut, For This From That Will Be Filled (2018, Miasmah), a track premiere from the album The Experience Of Repetition As Death (2020, 130701), and the review of her latest, Esthesis (2022, 130701), with many ending up on my Best of the Year selections. I have also previously published this In the studio with Clarice Jensen. In this episode, Matt talks with Clarice about her recent tour with Dustin O'Halloran, the ACME string ensemble, performing Max Richter's SLEEP, her live set-up, and of course, the new album. And as always, there will be music along the way, with snippets from her past releases. Artist Spotlight: Clarice Jensen on "Drone Studies"

Clarice Jensen, the composer, cellist, and Artistic Director with the Brooklyn-based ACME — that’s the American Contemporary Music Ensemble — has a new cassette release out via Geographic North, titled Drone Studies. The two pieces that make up this release, titled “The Organ that Made You Bleed” and “One Bee” show off an improvisational and naturally expressive tonal exploration that veers away from the compositional works she’s created with ACME, and via collaborations with artists such as Jóhann Jóhannsson, Max Richter, A Winged Victory for the Sullen, Dustin O’halloran, Stars of the Lid, and more. Host Chad Radford met up with Jensen and Jonathan Turner at Knoxville, Tennessee’s Big Ears festival in March of 2019, where they discussed these two side-long pieces and their relationship to her body of work. LPR Live, a new podcast showcasing music recorded live at Greenwich Village's Le Poisson Rouge, launches with a throwback to Steve Reich's seminal 1988 Different Trains for string quartet and tape, performed by the American Contemporary Music Ensemble (ACME). Steve Reich undoubtedly stands as one of America’s most influential composers. He also admits to being one of the most influenced musicians of his generation, combining the disparate sounds of jazz, African drumming, American experimentalism, and more. In Different Trains, written in 1988 and scored for string quartet and pre-recorded tape, Reich adds a deeply personal narrative to this melange of musical influence and creates one of his most affecting musical statements. This episode features performances by Caroline Shaw and Ben Russell, violinists; Nadia Sirota, violist; and Clarice Jensen, cellist, and interviews with Jensen, Shaw and Reich himself. The music was recorded on September 11, 2012; hear the complete show. Steve Reich’s Different Trains was featured on LPR Live by permission from Boosey & Hawkes. Meet the Composer
Bonus Track: 'Stringsongs' by Meredith Monk

I am absolutely THRILLED to present this week’s bonus track, an exclusive in-studio performance of Meredith Monk’s transcendent string quartet Stringsongs. Stringsongs is Meredith’s first string quartet. Written in 2005, the piece was premiered by the Kronos Quartet. I am extremely proud to share this piece now, in a performance by the inimitable ACME (American Contemporary Music Ensemble) in the Q2 Music studios. In the Meet The Composer: Meredith Monk episode, we spent a considerable amount of time focusing on the fascinating processes Meredith has employed constructing some of her vocal music — namely, her using her vocal ensemble to workshop ideas in the air. Stringsongs is an example of a completely different working style; these days, Meredith has been writing more and more scored, instrumental music, and Stringsongs was developed very much that way. The piece is in four movements: "Cliff Light," "Tendrils," "Obsidian Chorale," and "Phantom Strings." This work is a gorgeous example of Meredith lending her gilded aesthetic to a very Classical format. The composer’s program note is below: In Stringsongs, my first piece for string quartet, I explored using instruments to create unexpected textures and sounds in much the same way that I have worked with the voice over many years.  I was inspired by the profound musicianship and passionate commitment of the Kronos Quartet. During the rehearsal period, as I got to know the players, the music came to life in surprising ways, colored by the distinctive "voice" of each musician.   Stringsongs is published by Boosey & Hawkes. This recording session was engineered by Irene Trudel.
