What we need is an "are we sure we know what we are doing before we rush into this" catalogue or guide. The EV story might turn out to be one of the world's, and certainly the transportation industry's, biggest headaches as company after company admit they leapt in way too quick to electric, bought into all the Government-led madness on climate and invested, God-knows how much to transfer to a mode of movement the world wasn't ready for, or wanted. EVs were sold as way more than they ever were. Now even the scientists are waking up. There's a good piece of reading from Dr Caroline Shaw published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, whereby they do what we really should have done at the start and look at the EV in totality. It said don't get all hyped and hooked up on emissions. Yes, emissions in an EV vs petrol debate do drop. But what about the rest of it? They looked at all sorts of things like the extra weight, therefore the extra wear and tear, the weight and therefore the potential for injury, the cheapness of driving, therefore you drive more, therefore our fitness drops as we drive and don't walk. They looked at a myriad of things that should have been thought about and scoped out on day one and weighed up. Because here is the end result: when you add all that stuff up, the good, the bad and the ugly, electrifying cars would lie somewhere between harmful and neutral. Are you serious? Going electric could be harmful? Would it have not been useful to crunch a few of those ideas to understand this at the start of the obsession that drove the thinking? Or, like so much ideology, do the details not matter as long as we can leap on the old bandwagon, take a small piece of the bigger picture and then milk it for all its worth, knowing that we can leave the reality and the clean-up for another day? This by the way is not anti-EV. It's the realisation that like most things, what was the answer, and the obsession, and the next new thing, actually turns out to be just another piece in a way bigger, more complex, picture than the obsessives ever care to learn about. New York-based musician Caroline Shaw is a singer, violinist, composer, and producer who performs in solo and collaborative projects. Growing up in Greenville, NC, her introduction to music came through her mother -- a Suzuki music teacher -- and by listening to her local public radio station! The multi-faceted musician is an innovator whose creative outlets include commissions for a variety of performers and ensembles, singing with the vocal band Roomful of Teeth, and composing for TV, film and stage projects such as the Ken Burns/PBS documentary Leonardo Da Vinci and the FX/Hulu show Fleishman is in Trouble. She has earned 5 Grammy awards, and in 2013 – at age 30 -- she became the youngest recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for Music for her composition, PARTITA FOR 8 VOICES. We all know e-bikes are increasingly popular - but they're not cheap. Research shows it's financially well-off households which lead the way in e-bike sales. But three pilot programmes have just wrapped up - looking at how to get more communities charged up and onto a bike. This venture marks the first time the director has tackled a subject that is not American. The film, which is divided into two, two-hour segments was co-written by his daughter Sarah Burns along with Dave McMahon, and was directed and produced by all three. Leonardo's many notable achievements are explored via close examination and analysis of his prolific personal notebooks alongside accounts of his life and on-camera interviews with leading scholars, contemporary artists, engineers, and some famous fans like biographer Walter Isaacson and filmmaker Guillermo del Toro. Leonardo da Vinci also marks a departure from Burns's traditional filmmaking style, in which a pan or zoom added in post-production across a still image gives the illusion of movement. That style of filmmaking has become so closely associated with his material that it has garnered his own filter in iMovie software as what else? "The Ken Burns effect," of course. However, here, the filmmakers use split screens with images, videos, and sound effects from a range of time periods to highlight da Vinci's many achievements through his artistic and scientific explorations, along with the original music commission from celebrated composer Caroline Shaw. It creates a compelling effect and new stylistic approach for the iconic documentarian. Sample collaborative music by Pulitzer Prize-winning vocalist/composer Caroline Shaw and the versatile quartet Sō Percussion from their latest release, Rectangles and Circumstance, as played in-studio. Composer/vocalist/violinist Caroline Shaw, who has produced for Kanye West and Nas, won a Pulitzer Prize in 2013 for her Partita for 8 Voices, which was written for and performed with the vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth; she also teaches at NYU. Brooklyn-based Sō Percussion (Eric Cha-Beach, Adam Sliwinski, Josh Quillen, Jason Treuting) is a force of music and noise-making comprised of composer/percussionists/instrument builders/finders who beat, shake, bow, immerse, and rip all kinds of things – home goods and instruments - both acoustic and electric; they also compose. The members of Sō have worked with Shaw as a composer (Narrow Sea), and collaboratively as a band as on the latest, Rectangles and Circumstance. They've described their groups songwriting as lyrics via adaptations of poetry, or by a band member - and music which can morph - whether added to and/or sliced up; it's a process where everyone contributes equally. Sō describes percussion as an ethos – a willingness to make any and all sounds as requested, by whatever means necessary - whether that is a keyboard, a crotale dipped in water, or ripping a roll of duct tape in time. Despite everything being counted off in four, there are “beats of deceit”, where the music surfs on the edge of some meter, and it carries you, (-Caroline Shaw.) The duo called Ringdown makes what they refer to as electronic cinematic pop from Portland, Oregon. But there are also elements of folk and classical music in their songs, which makes sense given who they are. Ringdown is Caroline Shaw, Pulitzer Prize-winning composer and musician, and Danni Lee Parpan, folk-rock singer and songwriter. Together, they have a handful of Grammys, and a "Best Drum Major" Award - and they have begun releasing songs about love, and heartbreak, and dancing. Kate Molleson talks to Pulitzer Prize winning composer, Caroline Shaw At the age of just 30, in 2013 American composer Caroline Shaw made the headlines when she became the youngest person to win a Pulitzer Prize for her vocal work "Partita for Eight Voices". It's a mind blowing, joyous celebration of every sound and technique the human voice can achieve. The unexpectedly gained Pulitzer could have pigeon-holed Shaw's future career, as a "composer", but central to her identity as a creator is the fact that Shaw regards herself as musician. She's a violinist, a vocalist, producer, and a composer and it's the sum of all these parts that make up the creative impetus for her music. Blending performance with composition, blurring the lines between different musical genres, Shaw has avoided categorisation in the multiplicity of her enthusiasms. She's worked with rappers Kanye West and Nas, and soprano Renée Fleming, and mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter. Her more than one hundred works encompass classical works, film scores, vocal music, and performing and working collaboratively she continues to engage in a diverse range of multi-media projects.Shaw's passion for music formed early. Born in North Carolina in 1982, Shaw was taught the Suzuki method of violin by her mother from the age of 2. Her father, a specialist in respiratory disease, was a keen amateur pianist. Shaw grew up in a culture of community music-making, singing in the church choir and summer camp. Bob Prillaman, former executive of Caraustar Industries and philanthropist, passed away at the age of 90. Prillaman made an indelible impact on Cobb County through his philanthropy and activism. He played a key role in the growth of Wellstar Health System in the region and in the partnership between Wellstar and Kennesaw State University. Prillaman also wrote about healthcare issues for his community in a November MDJ guest column, encouraging collaboration among local hospitals, government, and community members. Prillaman was born into poverty in Bassett, Virginia, and worked his way up the ranks in the paper industry. He will be remembered for his kindness, thoughtfulness, and loyalty as a friend. A motorcyclist named Felix Witt was injured in a crash in east Cobb on Monday night. The incident took place around 6:10 pm when Witt's black 2022 KTR 390 motorcycle collided with a white 2017 Mazda CX5 driven by Sandra Craine. Craine attempted a U-turn at the intersection, in front of the motorcycle, which led to the collision. Witt was ejected from his motorcycle and was taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Craine, who is 76 years old, was not hurt. The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is urged to contact Cobb police. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp spoke to the Cobb Chamber of Commerce, touting the state's economy and fiscal conservatism. Kemp pointed to the state's low unemployment rate, economic development successes, and balanced budget. With a budget surplus of over $6 billion, the state returned funds to taxpayers through state income tax rebates and property tax relief. Kemp highlighted the state's record of being named the best state to do business for nine years in a row and announced roughly 150,000 new jobs and $60 billion of new investment since he took office. The governor also mentioned legislative measures passed, such as the Safe School Act, teacher pay raises, and combating human trafficking. The Kennesaw Downtown Development Authority and the Kennesaw Downtown Merchants Association have announced the third annual First Friday Concert Series in downtown Kennesaw. The series will run from May to October, with no concert in July. The community is invited to stroll through the historic downtown area and enjoy an evening of shopping, dining, and live music from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the Pedestrian Underpass/Tunnel Plaza off Main Street. VIP Tables are available for reservation, which include a six-foot table with a tablecloth, centerpiece, and special gift, and can seat six individuals. The lineup includes bands such as 293 Band, The GlowBand- an Ealges tribute, Run Katie Run, Brotherhood-a Doobie Brothers tribute, and Emerald Empire Band. Two high school basketball teams from Cobb County finished in the top 25 of the final national polls. Wheeler, the Class 7A state champion, ranked 24th in ESPN's final top 25. Kell, the Class 5A state champion, ranked 20th in USA Today's poll. Wheeler went 27-7 and defeated opponents by an average of 14 points. Kell went 28-2 and won their games by an average of 34 points in the final 15 games of the season. Both teams played a national schedule and won their state championships, while featuring rosters full of future college stars. Kennesaw State has found their new basketball coach, and he's coming from an SEC power. The five newest graduates of the Cobb County Drug Treatment Court were recently celebrated by judges, elected officials, community members, court staff, attorneys, family members, and friends. The program, which lasts 18-24 months, provides an alternative to incarceration for individuals with substance use disorders. The program combines close supervision, evidence-based treatment, and recovery support to teach offenders to be productive members of the community. The graduates shared their success stories and expressed hope and excitement for their future. The program is presided over by Superior Court Judge Kimberly A. Childs, and attended by other elected officials, including the District Attorney, Commissioner, and Clerk of Superior Court. The Harrison girls' soccer team won their eighth straight game with a 4-0 victory over South Gwinnett in the Class AAAAAAAA state playoffs. Caroline Shaw had a goal and an assist, and Addie Watt, Courtney Cangialosi, and Sydney Snow all scored. In other Cobb County action, Walton won 3-0 against West Forsyth, Kennesaw Mountain lost 3-0 to Denmark, and Brookwood beat Hillgrove 1-0. Harrison (13-3-1) will face the winner of Camden County and East Coweta in Round 2 on Monday, and Walton will host the winner of Meadowcreek and Buford on Monday.
